• How to monitor a folder for changes, and execute a command if it does, on Windows?

  There are similar questions for Linux and Mac, but I'm after a Windows solution here. The problem is as follows: I want to write several (js) script files in a folder, and have a program monitor that folder for file changes and new files being added, and run a command whenever that happens (to compile them all into one single file). The solution has to: Monitor both file changes and new files being added, in a folder. Run a command only if there is any change. It would be best if it either is a built-in solution (like a JScript or VBscript snippet), or something that does not require installation.

• On developing deep programming knowledge

  Occasionally I see questions about edge cases and other weirdness on Stack Overflow that are easily answered by the likes of Jon Skeet and Eric Lippert, demonstrating a deep knowledge of the language and its many intricacies, like this one: You might think that in order to use a foreach loop, the collection you are iterating over must implement IEnumerable or IEnumerable<T>. But as it turns out, that is not actually a requirement. What is required is that the type of the collection must have a public method called GetEnumerator, and that must return some type that has a public property getter called Current and a public method MoveNext that returns a bool. If the compiler can determine that all of those requirements are met then the code is generated to use those methods. Only if those requirements are not met do we check to see if the object implements IEnumerable or IEnumerable<T>. That's cool stuff to know. I can understand why Eric knows this; he's on the compiler team, so he has to know. But what about those who demonstrate such deep knowledge who are not insiders? How do mere mortals (who are not on the C# compiler team) find out about stuff like this? Specifically, are there methods these folks use to systematically root out such knowledge, explore it and internalize it (make it their own)?

• Configure IIS 7 Reverse Proxy to connect to TeamCity Tomcat

  We have an IIS 7 webserver configured and would like to create a reverse proxy for a TeamCity installation using Tomcat on the same machine. The IIS server site is https://somesite and I would like the TeamCity to appear as https://somesite/teamcity redirecting to http://localhost:portnumber. I have installed the IIS URL Rewrite extension and the Application Request Routing to try and setup a reverse proxy but can't get it working. The closest answer I found is an old StackOverflow question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/331755/how-do-i-setup-teamcity-for-public-access-over-https which unfortunately doesn't have any working example. I've searched a quite a bit but can't seem to find a relevant example. Any help is appreciated!

  Many thanks to Andy Westgarth and his team for organising a fantastic conference at the rather elegant Bradford University School of Management. Also, a big congratulations to all the delegates who gave up there free time to come and hear us speak and who were, in general, enthusiastic and asked some cracking questions to keep us speakers on our toes. For those who attended my Async my source code and presentation are now available on GitHub, https://github.com/westleyl/DDDNorth2-AsyncPatterns If you are new to Git then the easiest client to install is GitHub for Windows, a graphical UI for accessing GitHub. Personally, I also have TortoiseGit installed – the file explorer add-in that works in a familiar manner to TortoiseSVN. As I mentioned during the presentation I have not included the sample data, the music files, in the source code placed on GitHub but I have included instructions on how to download them from http://silents.bandcamp.com and place them in the correct folders. What I forgot to mention is that Windows Media Player by default does not play Ogg Vorbis and Flac music files, however you can download the codec installer for these, for free, from http://xiph.org/dshow. I am planning to break down this little project into a series of blog posts, with each pattern being a single blog post over several weeks. In these I will flesh out the background behind the pattern, the basic goal being achieved and how to monitor the progress of the sample data being processed. • Braces (syntax) highlighting in OpenOffice Math formula text editor

  When you use OpenOffice Math, in upper part you see formula and formula text editor in lower part. Almost like this: %sigma = 2 %mu %epsilon + %lambda Tr(%epsilon)I So my questions are: How to replace OpenOffice Math's formula text editor with own text editor? ... or how to enable braces (syntax) highlighting in embedded editor? ... are there any extensions for anything like this? I need this because sometimes it's too much braces and stuff and it's hard to distinguish which braces match each other. Please do not suggest me to use MathType Mathematica (or anything) instead of OpenOffice Math (because I'm almost happy with it:)

• showing hiding toolbars with shortcuts in firefox

  I'm a webdeveloper and using firefox with the bookmarks toolbar, the webdeveloper toolbar and the google toolbar. Are there shortcuts in firefox 3.5 to hide and show these toolbars. If not, may be an add on wich works in 3.5 to create a small script to hide these toolbars, bind with a shortcut? I found keyconfig addon but won't work in 3.5. I also found this script what sounds great. This is necessary for example when /etc is on a read-only filesystem." What is the difference between mount -o bind and mount --bind ...if there are Let's suppose i don't know there is a partition mounted using -o bind --no-mtab...where can I find if there is any mound point with bind ? The only way i can detect this is grep user /proc/mounts but in that line there is no info abut bind. Thank you.

• Setting up 2 external monitors on a laptop with VGA splitter

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality? (if it exists) Would I be better upgrading laptop to one with 2 digital ports ( I just see a lot with VGA and HDMI though) specs: Model: Toshiba Satellite C675-S106 (Windows 7) Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics 3000 (supports 2 displays) Processor: Intel Core i3-2350M

• How to prevent duplicate data access methods that retrieve similar data?

  In almost every project I work on with a team, the same problem seems to creep in. Someone writes UI code that needs data and writes a data access method: AssetDto GetAssetById(int assetId) A week later someone else is working on another part of the application and also needs an AssetDto but now including 'approvers' and writes the following: AssetDto GetAssetWithApproversById(int assetId) A month later someone needs an asset but now including the 'questions' (or the 'owners' or the 'running requests', etc): AssetDto GetAssetWithQuestionsById(int assetId) AssetDto GetAssetWithOwnersById(int assetId) AssetDto GetAssetWithRunningRequestsById(int assetId) And it gets even worse when methods like GetAssetWithOwnerAndQuestionsById start to appear. You see the pattern that emerges: an object is attached to a large object graph and you need different parts of this graph in different locations. Of course, I'd like to prevent having a large number of methods that do almost the same. Is it simply a matter of team discipline or is there some pattern I can use to prevent this? In some cases it might make sense to have separate methods, i.e. getting an asset with running requests may be expensive so I do not want to include these all the time. How to handle such cases?

• Simple multi-seat

  I've asked about multiseat before. The answer (for 10.04) involved doing it the proper way (eg through gdm, multiple server layouts). The problem was that gdm needs to be patched or reverted to 2.20 for multiseat. It's an ugly hack that, worse than anything, will hold up future updates. As a result, I didn't do anything. I still have a spare video card. I still have the monitor, keyboard and mouse all sitting waiting to jump into action. And I still want to be able to turn that into a simple desktop. My needs don't seem complicated. I have a second video card, a USB hub and anything connected to that USB hub that I want to be dedicated to another X server. I don't need a login screen (I'm happy hard-coding in a auto-login and I'd be happy with the user starting the X server if that's possible). This is so simple in my head that I only need two questions: How can I explicitly start an X server from the command line on an unused video adapter (by passing it whatever configuration I need to)? Can I have this new X session load a desktop environment on load? This seems like something you should be able to write in a little upstart script within 10 minutes. That would be perfect for me as then I'd have a nice start/stop control over the secondary desktop from the main desktop (that I want to leave unscathed!) I'm thinking something as simple as this for the payload: su -u other_user -c "startx -- localhost hardware-information" And use .xinitrc to load openbox or something...

• Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook &ndash; Book Review (sort of)

  I just received my copy of the Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook, co-authored by fellow Microsoft Regional Director, Gill Cleeren, and at first glance I like what I see. I’ve always been a fan of the “cookbook” approach to technical books because they are problem/solution oriented. Often developers need solutions to solve specific questions like “how do I send email from within my .NET application” and so on, and yes, that was a blatant plug to my article explaining how to accomplish just that, but I digress. :-) I also enjoy the cookbook approach because you can just start flipping pages and randomly stop somewhere and see what nugget of information is staring up at you from the page. Anyway, what I like about this book is that it focuses on a specific area of Silverlight development, accessing data and services.  The book is broken down into the following chapters: Chapter 1: Learning the Nuts and Bolts of Silverlight 4 Chapter 2: An Introduction to Data Binding Chapter 3: Advanced Data Binding Chapter 4: The Data Grid Chapter 5: The DataForm Chapter 6: Talking to Services Chapter 7: Talking to WCF and ASMX Services Chapter 8: Talking to REST and WCF Data Services Chapter 9: Talking to WCF RIA Services Chapter 10: Converting Your Existing Applications to Use Silverlight As you can see this book is all about working with Silverlight 4 and data. • Ubuntu server 11.04 recognize only 1 core instead of 4

  I searched for other questions and googled a lot but I don't find a solution for solving this problem. Ubuntu Server 11.04 64bit installed on Dell Poweredge with Intel Xeon X5450. He only recognize 1 of the 4 cores I have. Tried to modify the GRUB config but didn't work. IN the machine BIOS I didn't find anything useful. • Deleting pagefile.sys on shutdown

  I have a Windows XP machine (it is a VM running in Xen) that I would like to backup. I have enabled ClearPageFileAtShutdown by following MS KB 314834. If I cleanly shutdown the XP machine and then mount the drive in another machine (which is trivial since the machine is virtual) I still have a large pagefile.sys. I was hoping that enabling ClearPageFileAtShutdown would result in a pagefile.sys with a size near zero. I have two questions. First, is it possible to have pagefile.sys be deleted, or have a drastic size reduction, at shutdown? Second, can I exclude pagefile.sys from my backup?

• What to expect when creating a style guide?

  My organization would like to create a full fledged style guide that will be applicable to internal & external web sites, print advertising, trade show design, and overall branding. This article lays out the scope we're aiming for, and has links to many great examples style guide PDFs. The goal is to create a style guide comparable to one of these. I'd like to set realistic expectations within my organization for creating this document. So I have a few of questions pertaining to this: We don't have design staff. Should we be looking for a design firm or freelancer to come in for a 2-6 month contract, or do we need a longer commitment? If we do go with a firm or freelancer, would the pay-scale be comparable to typical design work, or is a style guide a higher order of work? How long should it take a pro to create a style guide? To make estimates more concrete, let's say web only, including all custom graphics. Any red flags to watch out for? (Compare: a new coder who fails to use css properly would be a red flag.)

• Impossible to enable bluetooth under Ubuntu

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 (dual boot, kept Windows just in case) on my new Acer Aspire One 756-877. As soon as I installed it I also installed the Broadcom driver, since wifi wasn't working, and that solved it right away. But when I tried Bluetooth, I had a problem that I see is quite recurring: -The hardware is on (and working fine under Windows) -The icon shows up on the menu, giving me the options of turning Bluetooth on or off, and then just "Bluetooth preferences". -I can apparently turn it on that way, which only lights up the icon but makes no difference at all (and doesn't give any other options in the Bluetooth menu) -When I open "Bluetooth preferences" (whether Bluetooth is apparently on or off, it makes no difference), it says it's disabled and will not let me slide the button to enable it. I've rebooted, but nothing happens. -The material is Broadcom and the port (if it's relevant at all) is Port_#0001.Hub_#0003 I tried the following commands suggested in other similar questions, with no result at all: sudo dmesg | grep blue and sudo service bluetooth start and sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start Any other clues on what I can do? • Best Architecture for ASP.NET WebForms Application

  I have written an ASP.NET WebForms portal for a client. The project has kind of evolved rather than being properly planned and structured from the beginning. Consequently, all the code is mashed together within the same project and without any layers. The client is now happy with the functionality, so I would like to refactor the code such that I will be confident about releasing the project. As there seems to be many differing ways to design the architecture, I would like some opinions about the best approach to take. FUNCTIONALITY The portal allows administrators to configure HTML templates. Other associated "partners" will be able to display these templates by adding IFrame code to their site. Within these templates, customers can register and purchase products. An API has been implemented using WCF allowing external companies to interface with the system also. An Admin section allows Administrators to configure various functionality and view reports for each partner. The system sends out invoices and email notifications to customers. CURRENT ARCHITECTURE It is currently using EF4 to read/write to the database. The EF objects are used directly within the aspx files. This has facilitated rapid development while I have been writing the site but it is probably unacceptable to keep it like that as it is tightly coupling the db with the UI. Specific business logic has been added to partial classes of the EF objects. QUESTIONS The goal of refactoring will be to make the site scalable, easily maintainable and secure. 1) What kind of architecture would be best for this? Please describe what should be in each layer, whether I should use DTO's / POCO / Active Record pattern etc. 2) Is there a robust way to auto-generate DTO's / BOs so that any future enhancements will be simple to implement despite the extra layers? 3) Would it be beneficial to convert the project from WebForms to MVC?

Hence, posting the question here as well: I have a lead to build an event manager solution in LAMP with following functionality: It should handle events by country, city, locality in city, type of event, venue type etc. following are a few user features: to see details of city, venue, event, performer etc. to purchase tickets and reserve tables. to search for events by city, venue, type, performer etc. to manage favorite venues and performers, save events etc. the venues should be able to add their events I plan to use a CMS (Joomla, Drupal etc.) with some ready made extension that provides most of the functionality or provide framework to build upon. Could you guys suggest me a CMS and an extension to build this. I know it is possible to do this in both Joomla or Drupal. What I am looking is the extension that is closest to my requirements whether it is done in Joomla or Drupal, or as a matter of fact any other CMS. Thanks in anticipation!

• How do I become a developer?

  Since many of you are already there I figured this might be a great place to invite ideas and suggestion for becoming a software developer. My background I have some basic knowledge of programming in VB and C++ from a course I had pursued 8 years ago. My main drawback is a lack of experience in software since I was in a teaching career until a year ago. I am working as a QA tester and finally got a chance to write some automation tests scripts using C#. I didn't have any prior knowledge of C# but I was able to figure my way through it. Questions Given this context: Would anyone have any ideas as to what would be a good approach to learn enough to actually be able to work as a developer? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what kind of learning path to adopt and which approaches speed up learning curve? Would pursuing university course be helpful in terms of knowledge gained? Are certification exams a way to go for a beginner? Are community college courses useful? What about courses offered by private institutes/centers? Any suggestion for some good books?

• Why are default spamassassin rules not being applied to emails we generate?

  My company uses a standalone spam-assassin install to test marketing emails, however, mail originating from us does not seem to run the full gamut of test. For example, Spam assassin has a default rule that flags messages that contain the phrase Dear [Something], and it properly flags spam that I feed it.It does not, however, apply that same rule to in house email I send it. Is it possible that spam assassin has white-listed us somehow, perhaps because the mail originates in the same domain as the server or receiver? I believe most of the recent spamassassin questions have been mine, so thanks for bearing with me as I figure this out! • Check if folders exist in Git repository... testing if a sub-string exists in bash with NULL as a separator

  I have a common git "post-receive" script for several projects, and it needs to perform different actions if an /app/ or /public/ folder exists in the root. Using: FOLDERS=`git ls-tree -d --name-only -z master`; I can see the directory listing, and I would like to use the RegExp support in bash to run something like: if [[ "$FOLDERS" =~ app ]]; then ... fi But that won't work if there was something like an "app lication" folder... I specified the "-z" option in the git "ls-tree" command so I could use the \0 (null) character as a separator, but not sure how to test for that in the bash RegExp. Likewise I know there is support for specifying a particular path in the ls-tree command, and could then pipe that to "wc -l", but I'd have thought it was quicker to get a full directory listing of the root (not recursive) then test for the 2 (or more) folders with the returned output.
