• The PATRIOT Act and how it relates to the Internet

  The subject of the Internet and anonymity is a very sticky situation for me because I primarily develop web applications for a living.  As a part of my job I have to track users as they enter, navigate and leave specific applications. The level of tracking depends on where the user goes within a website.  The basic information that I capture includes the user’s IP address, browser type, operating system, the date/time they entered the site and the URL from which the user was referred to the website. In addition to the custom logging that is placed on the website, web servers also have methods of logging built-in as well. Web server logging allows companies to have a central repository to store all user activity across the entire server. Not to mention that they can also create a central repository that allows multiple servers to store log files in one location. This allows users to be tracked across multiple servers as they browse website located on a specific collection of servers that host multiple websites. All this being said there are methods to attempt to protect your privacy by using proxy servers and increasing your browser security levels, but that will only limit the amount of logging not eliminate it. I have to agree with Traynor when he states that the PATRIOT Act eviscerates the constitutional protections of anonymous communication on the Internet. Therefore, given the recent passage and implementation of the PATRIOT Act, the constitutional guarantees of the right to anonymity have been severely compromised. I think that the PATRIOT Act is a direct violation of our first amendment rights because it allows for the government to directly monitor any and all activity on the internet including communications, usage, and transactions that can occur.  This opens the door to scrutiny and persecution of individuals who are not in line with the government’s beliefs and actions. If England had this type of monitoring capabilities during the revolutionary war, I believe it would have been almost impossible to succeed from England.

• Configuration Manager Setting Causing Error PRJ0019

  Recently I ran into an issue with a project failing to build on an automated build server using CruiseControl. When I looked into the build log I saw that the Post-Build project was failing with the error message: "error PRJ0019: A tool returned an error code from "Performing Post-Build Event..." This was most frustrating especially since the solution was building without issue on my local development environment. The Post-Build project was a C++ project that basically called several batch files to unregister/register assemblies, copy resources and supporting files, and place other dependencies in the GAC. I decided to run each of the batch files manually to see if that would provide more information as to why this project was failing. This lead me to determine that the batch file that was placing assemblies in the GAC was the culprit and that it was failing to find a particular assembly. The missing assembly was the output of another project. The project that was not producing the expected output was another C++ project that called a batch file. This batch process was actually embedding resource files into an assembly and then copying the assembly to the expected location. The real confusion started when I looked back into my Subversion log and noted that nothing had changed in this project in more than 2 months! It was almost as if the project had stopped building altogether. But what would cause that?! The Configuration Manager, obviously! Checking the solution's Configuration Manager settings, I found that the project that was not producing any output was in fact not selected to be part of the build process when the "Any CPU" platform was selected. This was the problem! I had recently updated the CruiseControl configurations to force the solution to be built targeting the platform "Any CPU". As a result, the project that was at the root of the problem was not configured to be built and the post-build process was failing when it couldn't find what it needed.

• Discovering path through unknown territory

  Let's say all the AI knows about it's surroundings is a pixel-map that it has which clearly shows walkable terrain and obstacles. I want the AI to be able to traverse this terrain until it finds an exit point. There are some restrictions: There is always a way to the exit in the entire map that the AI walks around in, but there may be dead ends. The path to the exit is always pretty random, meaning that if you stand at crossroads, nothing indicates which direction would be the right one to go. It doesn't matter if the AI reaches a dead end, but it has to be able walk back out of it to a previously not inspected location and continue its search there. Initially, the AI starts out knowing only the starting area of the whole map. As it walks around, new points will be added to the pixel-map as the AI corresponding to the AIs range of sight (think of it like the AI is clearing the fog of war) The problem is in 2D space. All I have is the pixel map. There are no paths in the pixel map which are "too narrow". The AI fits through everything. It shouldn't be a brute force solution. E.g. it would be possible to simply find a path to each pixel in the pixel map that is yet undiscovered (with A*, for example), which will lead to the AI discovering new pixels. This could be repeated until the end is reached. The path doesn't have to be the shortest path (this is impossible without knowing the entire map beforehand), but when movements within the visible area are calculated, the shortest and from a human standpoint most logical path should be taken (e.g. if you can see a way out of your room into a hallway, you would obviously go there instead of exploring the corner of your current room). What kind of approaches to solve this problem are there?

• How do I properly use String literals for loading content?

  I've been using verbatim string literals for some time now, and never quite thought about using a regular string literal until I started to come across them in Microsoft provided XNA samples. With that said, I'm trying to implement a new AudioManager class from the Net Rumble sample. I have two (2) issues here: Question 1: In my code for my GameplayScreen screen I have a folder location written as the following, and it works fine: menuButton = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuButton"); menuClose = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuClose"); If you notice, you'll see that I'm using a verbatim string, with a forward slash "/". In the AudioManager class, they use a regular string literal, but with two backslashes "\". I understand that one is used as an escape, but why are they BACK instead of FORWARD? (See below) soundList[soundName] = game.Content.Load<SoundEffect>("audio\\wav\\"+ soundName); Question 2: I seem to be doing everything correctly in my AudioManager class, but I'm not sure of what this line means: audioFileList = audioFolder.GetFiles("*.xnb"); I suppose that the *xnb means look for everything BUT files that end in *xnb? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with my file locations, as the sound effects are not playing.   Google is getting into a whole new business that would help us to see the world in a new dimension and free us from all gadgets we carry we today. Google Glasses is a wearable tiny computer that brings information in front of your eyes and lets you interact with it using voice commands. It’s a kind of glasses(spectacles) that you can wear to see and interact with the world in a new way.  With Google Glasses, for example you can look at a beautiful location and through voice you can instruct it to capture a photograph and share it to your friends. You don’t need a camera to capture the beautiful scene, you don’t need an App to upload and share it.  All you need is just Google Glasses By the way these glasses are not heavy head mountable stuff, they are very tiny one and look beautiful too. • Best practices for caching search queries

  I am trying to improve performance of my ASP.net Web Api by adding a data cache but I am not sure how exactly to go about it as it seems to be more complex than most caching scenarios. An example is I have a table of Locations and an api to retrieve locations via search, for an autocomplete. /api/location/Londo and the query would be something like SELECT * FROM Locations WHERE Name like 'Londo%' These locations change very infrequently so I would like to cache them to prevent trips to the database for no real reason and improve the response time. Looking at caching options I am using the Windows Azure Appfabric system, the problem is it's just a key/value cache. Since I can only retrieve items based on keys I couldn't actually use it for this scenario as far as Im aware. Is what I am trying to do bad use of a caching system? Should I try looking into NoSql DB which could possibly run as a cache for something like this to improve performance? Should I just cache the entire table/collection in a single key with a specific data structure which could assist with the searching and then do the search upon retrieval of the data?

• Google Analytics async=true seems wrong in the Google documentation?

After looking at my tracking codes to ensure they are correct, I noticed that the ga.async = true statement is specified differently most of the time and is never set to a value of true, it's often set to async but never true. Could this be stopping my Analytics data from posting to the second tracker? or might it be something else? Also what calls should I look for in the Net tab in firebug to ensure that GA is being called when the page loads?

Now, I could easily rename the folder and get it sorted, but I would like to understand what's going on here. What would be the correct way to configure Apache in a way that it wont behave this way, and instead would listen to the Rewrite Rule?   I have heard of people wanting and needing to add projects created in Expression Blend to Team Foundation Server. Here is the recipe: 1) Create your project in Expression Blend … click OK 2) Select the option to open your recently created project in Visual Studio. Once that option is selected, your solution will open up in Visual Studio, close Expression Blend at this point. Now, I want to add this project to Source Control … Next, I connect to my TFS environment, and pick the location to save my project Once the project is added, I will get a status window of pending changes for my project, all that we are left to do is to check in those changes. Since we have checked in our project, we can now close Visual Studio, and we will proceed to open Expression Blend again. And select our project we will! We notice some differences from before, just by opening it What differences you say?!? Notice the lock to the right of the item name … And we also get this when we right click … And there we have it, it is a combination of tools to achieve this, but it is well worth it.

• Migrating BizTalk 2006 R2 to BizTalk 2010 XLANGs Issue

  When we migrate some BizTalk apps from BizTalk 2006 R2 to BizTalk 2010, and we ran into issue when a .net component called inside the orchestration. In the .net component we are trying to retrieve some promoted property and we also checked in the BizTalk group hub to validate it was promoted, no issues there.  Only when we try to access the data into the .net component we had issue. We just moved all the assembly what we had in BizTalk 2006 R2 to BizTalk 2010, didn’t recompile anything in BizTalk 2010 environment. But looking further there is couple of new namespace added to the Microsoft.XLANGs… in BizTalk 2010 compared to BizTalk 2006 R2 caused the issue. So all we did to fix the issue is recompile the project in 2010 environment and it worked fine. • Spotlight on an Office – Reading TVP offices

  This month we’re in the UK at the Reading offices, for ‘Spotlight on an office’. The Reading Office, which is Oracle’s UK Headquarters, is based in Thames Valley Park (TVP), which is a bustling hive of activity that houses many different companies, a gym, and even a nursery. Overlooking the Thames and some of England’s beautiful countryside, this office, just a short free bus ride from Reading Town Centre is in a fantastic location. The offices themselves are made up of 5 different buildings, each with their own car park, restaurant, and design. The main building or TVP 510 as it is referred to, sits resplendent next to an extremely blue (for the UK) pond, filled with large koi-carp that on a sunny day like to come to the surface of the lake and bask. As the main hub of activity, TVP 510 is where you will find our Dry Cleaning service, the Ozone Gym, the main restaurant (which never fails to have someone in it), and the Marquee which sits outside the back amongst the picnic benches, and is where we have Barbeques in the summer time. Another highlight of the Reading Offices is tucked away in TVP530; the home of H20, and our sports and social club. This is the building that can be best be described as having the ‘cool’ vibe, where you can relax and unwind, all whilst sipping a Starbucks (or Costa if you prefer, located in TVP550), and playing a game of Pool in the cafeteria, or alternatively you can sit back and enjoy a seat in one of the luxury massage chairs! If you feel so inclined, you can also hire out an OraBike from any of the TVP offices, and if you are anything like some of my team, cycle from Reading to Bath using the towpath starting in Thames Valley Park. Oracle’s Reading Offices are a great place to work, they are home to a diverse range of people and have great atmosphere which would suit a graduate, intern, or anyone who is looking to come and work for Oracle in the UK.

• Technique to have screen independent grid based puzzle with sprite animation

  Hello all, let's say I have a fixed size grid puzzle game (8 x 10). I will be using sprites animation, when the "pieces" in the puzzle is moving from one grid to another grid. I was wondering, what is the technique to have this game being implemented as screen resolution independent. • Where could Distributed Version Control Systems currently be in Gartner's hype cycle?

  Edit: Given the recent downvoting (+8/-6 at this point) it was made clear to me that Gartner's lifecycle is a biased metric from a programmer's perspective. This is something that is part of a paper I'm going to present to management, and management types are part of Gartner's audience. Giving DVCS exposure & enthusiasm (that "could" be deemed as hype, or at least attacked as such), think about the following question when reading this one: "how could I use Gartner's hype cycle to convince management that DVCSs are ready (or ready-enough) for us, and that it is not just hype" Just asking if DVCSs is hype wouldn't be constructive, Gartner's hype cycle is a more objective instrument than just asking that (even if this instrument is regarded as biased). If you know any other instrument please, by all means, mention it. Edit #2: I agree that Gartner's Life Cycle is not for every technology, but I consider it may have generated enough buzz to be considered hype by some, so it maybe deserves to be at least evaluated/pondered as such by using this instrument in order to prove/disprove it to whatever degree. I'm an advocate of DVCS, BTW. I'm doing research for a whitepaper I'm writing in favor of DVCS adoption at company and I stumbled upon the concept of social proof. I want to prove that the social proof of DVCS adoption is not necessarily cargo cult and doing further research I now stumbled upon Gartner's hype cycle which describes technology maturity in 5 phases. My question is: what could be an indicator of the current location of Distributed Version Control Systems (I mean git, mercurial, bazaar, etc. in general) at a particular phase in the hype cycle?... in other (less convoluted) words, would you say that currently expectations of DVCSs are a) starting, b)inflated, c)decreasing (disillusionment), d)increasing (enlightenment) or e)stabilizing (mature) and (more importantly) why? I know it is a hard question and there is subjectivity involved, but I'll grant the answer (and the traditional cookie) to the clearest argument/evidence for a particular phase.

• Application shortcut reappears on restart

  I have an application that I have built a .msi installer for throgh Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. I recently made some updates, including changing the version number and rebuilt the installer with these updates. The installer includes shortcuts on both the desktop and in the Start menu. Running the installer appears to work fine, and both of these shortcuts work. After restarting my computer I've found that the shortcuts are changed to have a Target type of Application (Installs on first use) and the Start In: field is changed to a location that doesn't exist. Once this happens, every time you use that shortcut it tries to install the application again and fails. I have also changed the name of the shortcut that the installer creates. This appears to work, and the shortcut still works after a restart. After the restart, though, the shortcut with the old name that doesn't work also appears on the desktop and in the Start menu. Does anyone have any ideas what I may have set up wrong, or what I need to change to get the shortcuts to be have properly?

• How to account for speed of the vehicle when shooting shells from it?

  I'm developing a simple 3D ship game using libgdx and bullet. When a user taps the mouse I create a new shell object and send it in the direction of the mouse click. However, if the user has tapped the mouse in the direction where the ship is currently moving, the ship catches up to the shells very quickly and can sometimes even get hit by them - simply because the speed of shells and the ship are quite comparable. • Should a link validator report 302 redirects as broken links?

  A while ago, sparkfun.com changed their URL structure from /commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 to /products/9266 This is nice, right? We don't need to know that it is (or was) a PHP page, and commerce, product_info, and products_id all tell us that we're looking at some products. The latter form seems like a great improvement. However, the change would have broken existing links. So, nicely, they stuck in 302 redirects. Visit http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 and your browser will issue GET /commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 HTTP/1.1 to which Sparkfun's servers reply HTTP/1.1 302 Found Location: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9266 This 302 redirect is caught by Stack Exchange's link validator as a broken link. It's not broken it works just fine. Here, try it: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 I understand that a 302 redirect is intended to be a temporary redirect, while a 301 should be used for permanent changes per RFC 2616. That said, Wikipedia and common practice use it as a redirect. Who is in error in this situation? Is this an error in Sparkfun's redirect implementation or in Stack Exchange's URL validator?

  There came a situation where I wanted to work with two JDevelopers simultaneously and start two different applications in two JDEVs. (Both of them have to in separate installation location, else it will create a problem because of system directory).Now, when we want to start WLS in JDEV, only the first one will be started and the other one fails with an exception of port conflict. Until few days back, $1million dollar question was how to change the integrated WLS port number?So, heres the answer after some R&D. In the view menu, click on "Application Server Navigator". Right click on Integrated Weblogic server.1) If it is the first time that you are trying to start the server, then there is a menu "Create Default Domain". If you click on this, a window will be displayed where it asks for the preferred port number. Change it here.2) If the domain is already created, then click on Properties and change the preferred port number.Again, if you want to change the port before starting JDEV from the file system, then goto $JDEV_USER_HOME/systemxxx/o.j2ee and open the file adrs-instances.xml and change the http-port in the startup-preferences:<hash n="startup-preferences">   <value n="http-port" v="7111"/></hash>Note 1: adrs-instances.xml will be created ONLY after you create the default domain.Note 2: systemxxx - refers to system.<JDEV version> like system.11.1.1.3.56.59 for PS2.Note 3: $JDEV_USER_HOME - in windows - would be C:\Documents and Settings\[user_name]\Application Data\JDeveloper"Now, you can run multiple Integrated WLS simultaneously. • SSMS hanging without error when connecting to SQL

  Scary day for me last Thursday. I had gone up to Brisbane, and was due to speak at the Queensland SQL User Group on Thursday night. Unfortunately, disaster struck about an hour beforehand. Nothing to do with the recent floods (although we were meeting in a different location because of them). It was actually down to the fact that I’d been fiddling with my machine to get Virtual Server running on Windows 7, and SQL had finally picked up a setting from then. I could run Management Studio, but it couldn’t connect at all. No error, it just seemed to hang. One of the things you have to do to get Virtual Server installed is to tweak the Group Policy settings. I’d used gpupdate /force to get Windows to pick up the new setting, which allowed me to get Virtual Server running properly, but at the time, SQL was still using the previous settings. Finally when in Brisbane, my machine picked up the new settings, and caused me pain. Dan Benediktson describes the situation. If the SQL client picks up the wrong value out of the GetOverlappedResult API (which is required for various changes in Windows 7 behaviour), then Virtual Server can be installed, but SQL Server won’t allow connections. Yay. Luckily, it’s easy enough to change back using the Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc). Then restarting the machine (again!, as gpupdate /force didn’t cut it either, because SQL had already picked up the value), and finally I could reconnect. On Thursday I simply borrowed another machine for my talk. Today, one of my guys had seen and remembered Dan’s post. Thanks, both of you.
