• MS SQL Server 2000 tables

  We currently have an MS SQL Server 2000 database with one table containing data for multiple users. The data is keyed by memberid which is an integer field. The table has a clustered index on memberid. The table is now about 200 million rows. Indexing and maintenance are becoming issues. We are debating splitting the table into one table per user model. This would imply that we would end up with a very large number of tables potentially upto the 2,147,483,647, considering just positive values. My questions: 1) Does anyone have any experience with a MS SQL Server (2000/2005) installation with millions of tables? 2) What are the implications of this architecture with regards to maintenance and access using Query Analyzer, Enterprise Manager etc. 3) What are the implications to having such a large number of indexes in a database instance. In some cases i need to process text in title and other cases i don't, but in last case i need to get string w/o that patterns. For example i have title value like "Something **very** interesting" and when i call @article.title i need to get cleaned up string like "Something very interesting", but when i call @article.title_raw i need get original string. The problem also is that i have working application and i cannt do "revolution" but what way to go... -- Excuse me for my bad English.

  I just started learning MongoDB, and I really like the idea of embedding collections instead of referencing them. MongoDB's documentation recommends to use embedding if performance is needed. I just thought about a simple forum model. Let's say, every board category has several boards, every board has several topics, and every topic has several messages. All of these collections are embedded. After some time the size of the board category will be huge. Way more than the 2MB limit. Does this mean that there's a flaw in this design?

  I have 2 tables, 1 with countries, 1 with states. The states table has a column with Population. I'm using entities and I have created a List of states for the countries public class TblCountries { //Entities for my table country ... public List<tblStates> States { get; set; } } So now I can for example List all the states that belong to a country. Now what I want to do is count the population, so I can show the population that of an entire country. I tried using in my view @foreach (var item in Model.Countries) { @Html.DisplayFor(modelItem => item.States.Count<population>) } But this doesn't work, anyone know how to do this? • IE 8 specifying background-color changes element behavior

  I have an absolutely positioned div on which I am trying to trigger mouseenter and mouseleave events. In IE8/7 with the background-color of the div left unspecified (so that it defaults to transparent), the mouseenter/leave events are not firing when the cursor crosses the div's boundary, only somewhere in the middle of the div and when the cursor is over any text within the div. When I attempt to debug the problem by adding a background color to the div (e.g. background-color: green), the problem magically goes away. The div's box model is honored perfectly and mouseenter/leave fire as when expected. It's only when the div's background color is left unspecified (or even explicitly set to transparent) that it doesn't behave correctly. Any ideas? Googling for this IE bug/quirk is coming up with nothing.

• JQuery UI Dialog widget problem with IE and ASP.NET

  The JQuery UI Dialog model form widget has an issue with ASP.NET when a button on the dialog is clicked to submit the page. It doesn't work because the form elements in the dialog window are outside the html form tags. So I used the fix of doing $("#dialog").parent().appendTo($("form:first"));. It works in Firefox but not in IE because the modal window now appears to be part of the rest of the webpage which is disabled. Visually, this is evident by the stripes showing on both the modal window and the rest of the web page.

  I have 'div' element (recaptchaDiv) in knockout template which is not bound to any observable field: <div id="recaptchaDiv"></div> On the other hand, I update this 'div' by 3rd party library. In particular, this is google recaptcha. This is my code: Recaptcha.create("[my private key]", "recaptchaDiv", { theme: "clean", callback: Recaptcha.ToTest }); And it doesn't work (I see nothing). What I know: trying on FF console: $("#recaptchaDiv").html() - it shows the expected html code, I just can't see it in the browser What I tried: to move recaptchaDiv outside of the template and it works: I can see the captcha in the browser to bind recaptchaDiv on html property: in the template: <div id="recaptchaDiv" data-bind="html: recaptcha"></div> in the model: Recaptcha.create("[my private key]", "recaptchaDiv", { theme: "clean", callback: Recaptcha.ToTest }); recaptcha($("#recaptchaDiv").html()); and it doesn't work (replacing jquery on document.getElementById doesn't help) Any help will be very much appreciated!!! • Google App Engine - SiteMap Creation for a social network

  Hi all. I am creating a social tool - I want to allow search engines to pick up "public" user profiles - like twitter and face-book. I have seen all the protocol info at http://www.sitemaps.org and i understand this and how to build such a file - along with an index if i exceed the 50K limit. Where i am struggling is the concept of how i make this run. The site map for my general site pages is simple i can use a tool to create the file - or a script - host the file - submit the file and done. What i then need is a script that will create the site-maps of user profiles. I assume this would be something like: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9"> <url> <loc>http://www.socialsite.com/profile/spidee</loc> <lastmod>2010-5-12</lastmod> <changefreq>???</changefreq> <priority>???</priority> </url> <url> <loc>http://www.socialsite.com/profile/webbsterisback</loc> <lastmod>2010-5-12</lastmod> <changefreq>???</changefreq> <priority>???</priority> </url> </urlset> Ive added some ??? as i don't know how i should set these settings for my profiles based on the following:- When a new profile is created it must be added to a site-map. If the profile is changed or if "certain" properties are changed - then i don't know if i update the entry in the map - or do something else? (updating would be a nightmare!) Some users may change their profile. In terms of relevance to the search engine the only way a google or yahoo search will find the users (for my requirement) profile would be for example by means of [user name] and [location] so once the entry for the profile has been added to the map file the only reason to have the search-bot re-index the profile would be if the user changed their user-name - which they cant. or their location - and or set their settings so that their profile would be "hidden" from search engines. I assume my map creation will need to be dynamic. From what i have said above i would imagine that creating a new profile and possible editing certain properties could mark it as needing adding/updating in the sitemap. Assuming i will have millions of profiles added/being edited how can i manage this in a sensible manner. i know i need a script that can append urls as each profile is created i know the script will prob be a TASK - running at a set freq - perhaps the profiles have a property like "indexed" and the TASK sets them to "true" when the profiles are added to the map. I dont see the best way to store the map - do i store it in the datastore i.e; model=sitemaps properties key_name=sitemap_xml_1 (and for my map sitemap_index_xml) mapxml=blobstore (the raw xml map or ror map) full=boolean (set true when url count is 50) # might need this as a shard will tell us To make this work my thoughts are m cache the current site map structure as "sitemap_xml" keep a shard of url count when my task executes 1. build the xml structure for say the first 100 urls marked "index==false" (how many could u run at a time?) 2. test if the current mcache sitemap is full (shardcounter+10050K) 3.a if the map is near full create a new map entry in models "sitemap_xml_2" - update the map_index file (also stored in my model as "sitemap_index" start a new shard - or reset.2 3.b if the map is not full grab it from mcache 4.append the 100 url xml structure 5.save / m cache the map I can now add a handler using a url map/route like /sitemaps/* Get my * as map name and serve the maps from the blobstore/mache on the fly. Now my question is does this work - is this the right way or a good way to start? Will this handle the situation of making sure the search bots update when a user changes their profile - possibly by setting the change freq correctly? - Do i need a more advance system :( ? or have i re-invented the wheel! I hope this is all clear and make some form of sense :-)

  I'm working through NerdDinner and I'm a bit confused about the following section... First they've added a form for creating a new dinner, with a bunch of textboxes delcared like: <%= Html.TextArea("Description") %> They then show two ways of binding form input to the model: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Create() { Dinner dinner = new Dinner(); UpdateModel(dinner); ... } or: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Create(Dinner dinner) { ... } Ok, great, that all looks really easy so far. Then a bit later on they say: It is important to always be paranoid about security when accepting any user input, and this is also true when binding objects to form input. You should be careful to always HTML encode any user-entered values to avoid HTML and JavaScript injection attacks Huh? MVC is managing the data binding for us. Where/how are you supposed to do the HTML encoding?

• Paperclip + ImageMagick on Windows 7: Image display fails when I add styles to attached_file in mode

  I'm working with Ruby on rails 2.3.8, NetBeans IDE. I've installed paperclip and I could show/save images successfully. Now, I've installed ImageMagick-6.6.2-4-Q16(for windows 7, 64bits). Until that moment, my model looked like this(and worked fine): has_attached_file :photo Now, after installing ImageMagick, when I add the :style line it fails: has_attached_file :photo, :styles => {:thumb => "100x100#", :small => "150x150>", :large => "400x400>" } and it throws the following error message when I try to upload an image: TypeError in ProfilesController#update backtrace must be Array of String The only thing I'm doing in the update action of that controller is the following: @profile.update_attributes(params[:profile]) @profile.update_attribute(:photo, params[:profile][:photo]) I've also installed miniMagick gem(because I read somewhere I had to do it). What am I missing?

  I was trying to integrate django-voting into my project following the RedditStyleVoting instruction. In my urls.py, i did something like this: url(r'^sections/(?P<object_id>\d+)/(?P<direction>up|down|clear)vote/?$', vote_on_object, dict( model=Section, template_object_name='section', template_name='script/section_confirm_vote.html', allow_xmlhttprequest=True ), name="section_vote", then, in my template: {% vote_by_user user on section as vote %} {% score_for_object section as score %} {% vote_by_user user on section as vote %} {% score_for_object section as score %} {{ score.score|default:0 }} It takes over 1.3s to load the page, but by hard coding it like this: {% vote_by_user user on section as vote %} {% score_for_object section as score %} {{ score.score|default:0 }} I got 50ms. Just avoid the url tag resolving stuff I got a 20+ times performance improvement. Is there something I did wrong? If not, then what's the best practice here, should we do things the right way or the fast way?

  I've download a trial of Altova UModel and am starting using UML. As a practical beginning I am modelling a personal information manager application, which includes a web bookmark managing. A Bookmark can belong to many (or no) Tags at once and a Tag can contain many (or no if all the bookmarks it contained were deleted) bookmarks. The relation has to be both-way navigable - a user has to be able to see all Bookmarks with a particular Tags ans all Tags of a Bookmark. What is the correct UML relation between Bookmark and Tag classes? As far as I understand UML now, it is an Association (not an Aggregation). But for a 2-way navigable many-to-many relation I can specify ends roles as "memberEnd" or "when navigableOwnedEnd", graphically the connection looks the same in both cases (an arrow) (which as I understand means navigability) but a property appears in the class box in case only when "memberEnd" is used. How should I specif it in the model If I mean both-way navigable many-to-many relation there?

  I am looking into thrift for serialization of data. But Document says cyclic structs - Structs can only contain structs that have been declared before it. A struct also cannot contain itself One of our requirement is Struct A List of Child items Items(Items are Struct A ) So reading requirement i can't have Struct within itself at any level? can i have it in cyclic model as i have it above. Struct is not member of Struct directly but it has some other member and it contains struct. Their document is not so well descriptive. Is it possible in Thrift? Does protobuf supports it?

  I am trying to build a forum with Codeigniter. So far i have the forums themselves displayed and the threads displayed, based on the creating dynamic news tutorial. But that is 2 different pages, i need to obviously display them into one page, like this: Forum 1 - thread 1 - thread 2 - thread 3 Forum 2 - thread 1 - thread 2 etc. And then the next step is obviously to display all the posts in a thread. Most likely with some pagination going on. But that is for later. • OpenGL Performance Questions

  This subject, as with any optimisation problem, gets hit on a lot, but I just couldn't find what I (think) I want. A lot of tutorials, and even SO questions have similar tips; generally covering: Use GL face culling (the OpenGL function, not the scene logic) Only send 1 matrix to the GPU (projectionModelView combination), therefore decreasing the MVP calculations from per vertex to once per model (as it should be). Use interleaved Vertices Minimize as many GL calls as possible, batch where appropriate And possibly a few/many others. I am (for curiosity reasons) rendering 28 million triangles in my application using several vertex buffers. I have tried all the above techniques (to the best of my knowledge), and received almost no performance change. Whilst I am receiving around 40FPS in my implementation, which is by no means problematic, I am still curious as to where these optimisation 'tips' actually come into use? My CPU is idling around 20-50% during rendering, therefore I assume I am GPU bound for increasing performance. Note: I am looking into gDEBugger at the moment Cross posted at Game Development

  I'm new to Devise and have it working fine by using an email address as the authentication key. However, I have a use case which requires a username instead and I can't seem to get it working. I've added a string column, "username" to the users table, changed the fields from :email to :username in the sign-in form, and have changed the authentication key in devise.rb to :username yet when I go to sign in I'm met with this prompt: "Please enter an email address".
