• View another persons calendar details in Outlook 2010

  I know how to view somebody else's calendar - there are 100 walk-throughs like this one on Google. However, this feature has changed in Outlook 2010, and you no longer get prompted for rights to view another person's calendar, and Outlook just displays their "Free/Busy" information, which doesn't help me. I'd like to request permissions to view the details of their appointments, but I can't find any place to request permissions on their calendar - Outlook 2010 just gives me "Free/Busy" rights and then appears to have no option to request additional rights. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

• How to securely delete files stored on a SSD?

  From a (very long, but definitely worth to read) article on SSDs: When you delete a file in your OS, there is no reaction from either a hard drive or SSD. It isn’t until you overwrite the sector (on a hard drive) or page (on a SSD) that you actually lose the data. File recovery programs use this property to their advantage and that’s how they help you recover deleted files. The key distinction between HDDs and SSDs however is what happens when you overwrite a file. While a HDD can simply write the new data to the same sector, a SSD will allocate a new (or previously used) page for the overwritten data. The page that contains the now invalid data will simply be marked as invalid and at some point it’ll get erased. So, what would be the best way to securely erase files stored on a SSD? Overwriting with random data as we are used to from hard disks (e.g. using the "shred" utility) won't work unless you overwrite the WHOLE drive...

The nice thing also is that Tinkerforge products are open source, both on the hardware and software levels, so that you can take their bases as a starting point for your own modifications. "The TinkerForge system is a set of pre-built electronics boards that are built in such a way that you can stack the boards (known as bricks), attach accessories (known as bricklets), and have your prototype and and running quickly. Unlike systems, such as the Arduino or Launchpad, the TinkerForge has to be attached to a computer and the computer does all of the work. With an easy set of application programming interfaces (APIs) available in C/C++, C#, Java, PHP, and Ruby, the system is easy to interface and program over USB in a snap." • how to link a c++ object to a local variable in Lua

  I'm completing my scripting interface with Lua, but recently I've stuck at some point. I have several functions for my Entitiy events like Update(). I have a function called create_entitiy() which instantiate a new entity from a given entity index: function Update() local bullet = create_entity(0, 0, "obj_bullet") end create_entity returns a table which is the properties of the created entity. Now how can I make a connection between bullet variable and my newly created object? Right now for previously added objects to the scene, I simply set a global table for each of them and then after every call to Update(), I go through registered names to find object tables and perform new changes. Like the one below: function Update() if keyboard_key_press(vk_right) then obj_player.x += 3 end I can get obj_player table because I know its name from C++, plus I can get it as a global table and simply reach for the first instance named obj_player. Is there any solution for me to make bullet variable act like this? I was thinking to get all local variables in Update() function and check for every one to see if is it table and it has an unique field attached to it like id, this way I can determine that this is an object table and do the rest of the process. By the way, is this interface going to work easier with luaBind if I implement it? Bottom line: How can I make a local variable in Lua that receives a table from create_entity function and track that local variable to capture it from C++. e. g. function Update() local bullet = create_entity(0, 0, "obj_bullet") bullet.x = 10 <== Commit a change in table end Now I want to get variable bullet from C++. And it's not just this variable, there might be a ton of these local variables with different names.

• Importing Outlook 2007 rules error

  I'm trying to move an Outlook 2007 account (POP3, no Exchange) to a new machine and I'm having trouble importing the rules from the old machine to the new one. Here is the deal, I imported the .pst file on the new machine but when I try to import the rules, every single one of them brakes. The folders and sub-folders hierarchy is preserved upon the import of the .pst but the rules don't point to the right folder in the respective rule. Instead it points to "the specified folder". Same OS (Windows XP), same mail client (Outlook 2007) and the .psf file is about 8 GB. Any help i greatly appreciated.

• Raspberry Pi stuck at splash screen

  I have a raspberry pi and I am stuck at the splash screen. In the top right of the screen there is an image of a Raspberry. When I first power on the device, I get the colored screen, and then I get the image of the raspberry followed by a white cursor which quickly freezes or disappears. I put on the debian version of wheezy that allows java. (the soft float version) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. BTW I did have it working at one point in time and all I did was go to the terminal (logged out of the GUI) and did a shutdown -h now command. But since then I've even started with a brand new version of the image and it is still not working. Oh and I did try the same SD card with a version of arch linux and it worked fine.

  When reading the famous SICP,I found the authors seem rather reluctant to introduce the assignment statement to Scheme in Chapter 3.I read the text and kind of understand why they feel so. As Scheme is the first functional programming language I ever know something about,I am kind of surprised that there are some functional programming languages(not Scheme of course) can do without assignments. Let use the example the book offers,the bank account example.If there is no assignment statement,how can this be done?How to change the balance variable?I ask so because I know there are some so-called pure functional languages out there and according to the Turing complete theory,this must can be done too. I learned C,Java,Python and use assignments a lot in every program I wrote.So it's really an eye-opening experience.I really hope someone can briefly explain how assignments are avoided in those functional programming languages and what profound impact(if any) it has on these languages. The example mentioned above is here: (define (make-withdraw balance) (lambda (amount) (if (>= balance amount) (begin (set! balance (- balance amount)) balance) "Insufficient funds"))) This changed the balance by set!.To me it looks a lot like a class method to change the class member balance. • Troubleshooting wireless network connectivity

  I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10, and I'm running into trouble keeping my wireless connection alive. After rebooting, I get about 5-10 minutes of a good speed connection; afterwards, the connection just zeroes out. I've gotten around to stirring up a shell script that gives me another 10 minutes or so of connectivity. Script contents below: #! /bin/bash sudo ifconfig wlan0 up echo "Enabling wireless device . . ." sleep 5 sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid MyNetworkName echo "Connecting to network. . ." sleep 10 sudo dhclient wlan0 echo "Getting IP address. . ." sleep 5 echo "Done. Closing window. . ." sleep 5 Shortly after running the line "sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid MyNetworkName" from the script, I notice the speed pick up. Other computers in my home running Windows XP are not affected by this problem, so all indications point to my Ubuntu machine. Does anyone have any pointers as to how to resolve this?

• Running remotely an app from a shared folder with PsExec

  I am actually not sure that this is possible. let's see: I have a script that runs on a Build server. Let's name this server A. It drops the bins to a shared folder on server B. And I want to run the program on server C. So using caspol I can allow the executable to be ran remotely. that means from B I can run \C\shared\my.exe What I want to do is from A run \C\shared\my.exe on B. SysInternals\PsExec.exe -u username -p password -accepteula \\ServerC -i 0 -d -w \\ServerB\Nightly\Server \\ServerB\Nightly\Server\server.exe The user has all the necessary rights. But, the -w (working directory) options apparently wants a path relative to the server I point to. Any idea?

• How much effort should you put into a junior developer?

  At what point should one give up? I've tried helping them out by having them shadow me. We agree to break a minute, and then they go missing in action for a while...then just go back to their desk. Even when I know they've done this, part of me feels like I shouldn't have to go get them but that they should be showing interest in learning. Frankly, it's a bunch of time I don't have explaining things as I go when I could just do it. Am I expecting too much to expect that if they want to learn they'll make sure I know they're ready and willing? They go to meetings that they where not told they had to, good, but then sit in the corner and sleep...bad. I don't even know what to do with that. Sometimes I give them something small to do and they do it great, so I give them something just a touch harder and they totally fail, hard. Check in things without testing them. Part of me thinks that maybe I should be spending more time with them but at the same time I don't see a lot of interest and I really, honestly don't have time teaching the same things over and over. Sometimes I get asked questions that are really, really easy to answer if you just do a little bit of your own work trying to find out. Other times I'm not asked anything. I'm sure I could be doing better but honestly...I don't really want to anymore.

  Based on the example of Rastrigin's function. At the plot function, if I chose 'best fitness', on the same graph 'mean fitness' will also be plotted. I understand well about 'best fitness' whereby it plots the best function value in each generation versus iteration number. It will reach value zero after some times. I don't understand about 'mean fitness'in the graph plotted. What do those 'mean fitness' values mean? How does the 'mean fitness' graph help to understand Rastrigin's function? What are the meaning of the term initial population, initial score and initial range? I wish to have a better understanding of these terms. The default value for initial range is [0,1]. Does it mean that 0 is the lower bound (lb) and 1 is the upper bound (ub)? Do these values interfere with the lb and ub values I set in the constraints? I try to better understand about lb and ub. If my lb is 0 and ub is 5, does it mean that my final point values will be within 0 and 5? If I know the lb and ub for my problem is between 0 and 5, do I just set the initial range as [0,5] at all times and may I assume that this is the best option for initial range, and I need not try it with any other values?

• Trying to migrate Windows 7 install of Adobe CS5 to Ubuntu 12.04 with Wine - 'Internal errors - invalid paramters received"

  I have Adobe CS5 installed and running on the Windows 7 side of my machine. Since I'd hate to boot up into Windows just to use Photoshop, I'm trying to get it in Ubuntu 12.04. Tutorials I found suggested that the easiest way to have it in Ubuntu was to install Wine, and copy my Windows installation over. Here are the exact steps I've done up to this point. From Windows, exported the registry key for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Adobe to the desktop. Changed to Ubuntu, downloaded Wine from Software Center Terminal: $ sudo apt-get install wine ttf-mscorefonts-installer $ winecfg $ wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks $ sh winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005sp1 vcrun2008 msxml3 atmlib Moved registry export to home folder. Copied "Program Files (x86)\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Adobe" "Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Adobe" "Documents and Settings\Don\Application Data\Adobe" to "~/.wine/drive_c/users/don/Application Data/Adobe" "Windows\System32\odbcint.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbcint.dll" ,and lastly "Windows\System32\odbc32.dll" to "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/odbc32.dll". From Terminal, $ wine regedit adobe.reg. Right clicked on Photoshop.exe and selected "Open with Wine". Got the message "Wine Program Crash, Internal errors - invalid parameters received." So to restate my question, How can I get Photoshop running in Ubuntu 12.04? I'm not sold on doing it in this specific way, I just want to use Photoshop without having to reboot. • How to configure remote access to multiple subnets behind a SonicWALL NSA 2400

  I have a client that uses a SonicWALL NSA 2400 as their firewall. I need to setup a second LAN subnet for a handful of PC. Management has decided that there should be a second subnet even though intend to allow access across the two subnets - I know... I'm having trouble getting communication across the 2 subnets. I can ping each gateway, but I cannot ping or seem to route traffic fron subnet A to subnet B. Here is my current setup: X0 Interface: LAN zone with IP addres 192.168.1.1 X1 Interface: WAN zone with WAN IP address X2 Interface: LAN zone with IP address 192.168.75.1 I have configured ARP and routes for the secondar subnet (X2) according to this SonicWALL KB article: http://www.sonicwall.com/downloads/supporting_multiple_firewalled_subnets_on_sonicos_enhanced.pdf using "Example 1". At this point I don't minding if I have to throw the SonicWALL GVC software VPN client into the mix to make it work. It feel like I have an Access Rule issue, but for testing I made LAN LAN, WAN LAN and VPN LAN rules wide open with the same results.

• Apache SSL losing session over load balancer

  I have two physical Apache servers behind a load balancer. The load balancer was supposed to be set up so that a user would always be sent to the same physical server after the first request, to preserve sessions. This worked fine for our web apps until we added SSL to the setup. Now the user can successfully login, see the home page, but clicking on any other internal links logs the user right out. I traced the issue to the fact that while initial authentication is performed by server 1, clicking on internal links leads to having the request sent to server 2. Server 2 does not share sessions with server 1, and the user is kicked out. How can I fix it? Do I need to share sessions between the two servers? If so, could you point me to a good guide for doing this? Thanks.

• Would it be a good idea to work on letting people add arrays of numbers in javascript?

  I am a very mathematically oriented programmer, and I happen to be doing a lot of java script these days. I am really disappointed in the math aspects of javascript: the Math object is almost a joke because it has so few methods you can't use ^ for exponentiation the + operator is very limited, you cant add array's of numbers or do scalar multiplication on arrays Now I have written some pretty basic extensions to the Math object and have considered writing a library of advanced Math features, amazingly there doesn't seem to be any sort of standard library already out even for calculus, although there is one for vectors and matricies I was able find. The notation for working with vectors and matricies is really bad when you can't use the + operator on arrays, and you cant do scalar multiplication. For example, here is a hideous expression for subtracting two vectors, A - B: Math.vectorAddition(A,Math.scalarMultiplication(-1,B)); I have been looking for some kind of open-source project to contribute to for awhile, and even though my C++ is a bit rusty I would very much like to get into the code for V8 engine and extend the + operator to work on arrays, to get scalar multiplication to work, and possibly to get the ^ operator to work for exponentiation. These things would greatly enhance the utility of any mathematical javascript framework. I really don't know how to get involved in something like the V8 engine other than download the code and start working on it. Of course I'm afraid that since V8 is chrome specific, that without browser cross-compatibility a fundamental change of this type is likely to be rejected for V8. I was hoping someone could either tell me why this is a bad idea, or else give me some pointers about how to proceed at this point to get some kind of approval to add these features. Thanks!

• Game Resource Generation

  I am currently building a game that has a "City" entity. These cities generate and consume resources such as food variably over a period of time. I need to be able query the server often to find exactly how much food the city at any given point. These queries can take place multiple times per minute. There could also be 400,000 cities to track at a given time. How would you handle tracking these resources? Would you do it in real time, keeping an instance of the city in memory on the server, with some sort of a snapshot in time of the resources, then computing the growth/consumption from that snapshot time for subsequent queries? Would you work exclusively with a database, using a similar "snapshoting" scheme? Maybe a mixture of the 2, caching recently queried cities in memory for a period of time? There is also a lot of other data that each city needs to track. A player can queue units to build in a barrack. The armies available in the city will need to be updated as units complete. I'm interested in everyone's input on where/when/how you'd manage the real time data.

• XNA Skinned Animated Mesh Rendering Exported from Maya

  I am working on translating an old RTS game engine I wrote from DirectX9 to XNA. My old models didn't have animation & are an old format, so I'm trying with an FBX file. I temporarily "borrowed" a model from League of Legends just to test if my rendering is working correctly. I imported the mesh/bones/skin/animation into Maya 2012 using an "unnamed" 3rd-party import tool. (obviously I'll have to get legit models later, but I just want to test if my programming is correct). Everything looks correct in maya and it renders the animations flawlessly. I exported everything into a single FBX file (with only a single animation). I then tried to load this model using the example at the following site: http://create.msdn.com/en-US/education/catalog/sample/skinned_model With my exported FBX, the animation looks correct for most of the frames, however at random times it screws up for a split second. Basically, the body/arms/head will look right, but the leg/foot will shoot out to a random point in space for a second & then go back to the normal position. The original FBX from the sample looks correct in my program. It seems odd that my model was imported into maya wrong, since it displays fine in Maya. So, I'm thinking either I'm exporting it wrong, or the sample code is bad & the model from the sample caters to the samples bad code. I'm new to 3D programming & maya, so chances are I'm doing something wrong in the export. I'm using mostly the defaults, but I've tried all 3 interpolation modes (quaternion, euler, resample).   Hi, I'm looking into ways of improving requirements management. Currently, we have a Word document published on a Web site. Unfortunately, we cannot (to my knowledge) look at changes from one revision to the next. I would greatly prefer to be able to do so, much like with a wiki or VCS (or both, like the wiki's on bitbucket!). Also, each document describes changes devs are expected to meet by a given deadline. There is no collection of accumulated app features documented anywhere, so it's sometimes hard to distinguish between a bug and a (poorly-designed) feature when trying to make quick fixes to legacy apps. So I had an idea I wanted to get feedback on. What about: Using a wiki so that we can track who changed what when (mostly to even see if any edits were made since the last time one looked). Having one, say, wiki page per product rather than one per deadline, keeping up with all features of the product rather than the changes that should be implemented. This way, I can look at a particular revision of the page to see what the app should do at a given point in time, and I can look at changes to the page since the last release for the requirements to be implemented by the next deadline. Waddayathink?

• LAN access via USB from Ipod Touch?

  I need to browse the local web server from my Ipod Touch to test apps we're developing. I'm not allowed to install a separate wireless access point which would be the easiest solution. Can I use the USB cable for this? Also, the local PC is a Dell Mini 9 running Ubuntu. Has anyone managed to use the wireless port to create an ad hoc connection to an Ipod Touch so the Ipod can browse the Ubuntu web server? This would be an alternate option for me. Thank you!

  Do you find the crippling effect that most anti virus software has on a computer's performance worth the "security" they provide? I've never been able to really tell myself its worth it, and have used my computer without "protection" for years without any problems. Jeff Atwood wrote about this a while back, taking a similar stance. So I'm looking for some discussion on the merits and downfalls of antivirus software, and whether you personally think its worth the hassle. One point I do think is valid is that I am probably okay with not running it because I know if something goes wrong I have the ability to make it right (most of the time) but I can't really recommend the same for family as they may not be able to...

  I've a citrix server where multiple users use a multiple java application. Is there a way to reduce the memory footprint of the jvm itself? The max heap is already set fairly low (64MB), as the permgen (32MB) space and we're to the point that the jvm itself uses way more memory than the application itself (the committed area is around 350MB) I'm looking for a way to reduce the jvm ram usage or to make the all the applications run within the same jvm or any other way of sharing common pages between running jvm (if possible) or try switch to switch to a jvm if a jvm exists having optimizations relative to this scenario currently using windows 2003 server and sun java virtual machine 1.6

• mod_proxy failing as forward proxy in simple configuration

  (On Mac OS X 10.6, Apache 2.2.11) Following the oft-repeated googled advice, I've set up mod_proxy on my Mac to act as a forward proxy for http requests. My httpd.conf contains this: <IfModule mod_proxy> ProxyRequests On ProxyVia On <Proxy *> Allow from all </Proxy> (Yes, I realize that's not ideal, but I'm behind a firewall trying to figure out why the thing doesn't work at all) So, when I point my browser's proxy settings to the local server (ip_address:80), here's what happens: I browse to http://www.cnn.com I see via sniffer that this is sent to Apache on the Mac Apache responds with its default home page ("It works!" is all this page says) So... Apache is not doing as expected -- it is not forwarding my browser's request out onto the Internet to cnn. Nothing in the logfile indicates an error or problem, and Apache returns a 200 header to the browser. Clearly there is some very basic configuration step I'm not understanding... but what?

• Determinism in multiplayer simulation with Box2D, and single computer

  I wrote a small test car driving multiplayer game with Box2D using TCP server-client communcations. I ran 1 instance of server.exe and 2 instance of client.exe on the same machine that I code and compile the executables. I type inputs (WASD for a simple car movement) into one of the 2 clients and I can get both clients to update the simulation. There are 2 cars in the simulation. As long as the cars do not collide, I get the same identical output on both client.exe. I can run the car(s) around for as long as I could they still update the same. However, if I start to collide the cars, very quickly they go out of sync. My tools: Windows 7, C++, MSVS 2010, Box2D, freeGlut. (For any deterministic engine) Determinism is gauranteed if playback of recorded inputs is on the same machine with exe compiled using same compiler and machine. Additionally my server.exe and client.exe gameloop is single thread with blocking socket calls and fixed time step. Question: Can anyone explain what I did wrong to get different Box2D output?
