    I am building a flight simulator box, off of Ubuntu 12.10, but I am trying to make the OS essentially invisible, I just want the machine to boot into the Flight Sim, which, that part isn't really that difficult, just a matter of adding a startup item, but I would like to make it a bit more seemless, and in-addtion to that, I would like maybe a 3-5 second countdown where you could opt-out of the flight sim from starting, if you need to troubleshoot the OS, or the flight sim itself, and I have no idea how that would be accomplished

  • Understanding Windows 8 Recovery options

    Background: I am preparing a PC that I am sending to a relative abroad, who has little or no internet access, and next to no sensible options for getting IT support should anything go wrong. As such I am trying to provide a full set of recovery options such that they are able to reinstall the OS with minimum fuss or assistance if required. The PC is a brand new Acer laptop that came with Windows 7 pre-installed (and an associated recovery partition) and a free upgrade to Windows 8. I have installed Windows 8 from scratch performing a format and clean install from media I burned from the official download. The existing Windows 7 recovery partition is still there, and I can still boot from it. I have created recovery DVDs of that in case it is ever lost. Here are my recovery options so far. I can perform a factory reset of Win 7 via the recovery partition I can perform a factory reset of Win 7 via burned recovery DVDs I can re-install Windows 8 cleanly from a DVD All of these are useful, but not what I want, because the first 2 methods use Win 7, and still fill the machine with crapware, and the latter doesn't provide for any post-install customisation and software installation. So, I am looking to see what other options are available to perform a Windows 8 recovery that will be more than a simple install. I am aware that Win8 comes with some useful refresh tools: Refresh your PC - Re-install Win 8 over the top of your existing installation, recovering from any Windows corruption etc. I can run this from my current install, although it says some files are missing that will be provided by me install or recovery media, which seems to be code for stick your install DVD in, and it starts after I do that - unfortunately for this particular laptop you need to specify a particular WIFI driver or the install bombs out part way through with IRQL errors, and this refresh method skips the part where you can load a driver, so it's no use to me. I think I can fix this by creating a custom recovery image using the recimg.exe command but it takes hours to complete so I haven't tried it yet. Reset your PC - Perform a full install and lose all your files. Again it needs my Install media inserting before it will do anything, but then it provides an error (will include later when I recreate it...) Now, these recovery options look useful (in principal, although both are fail for me) but they rely on having a working system to access the tools, which leads me to the last option, of making a Recovery USB drive. I have made a recovery drive, and it should perform loads of useful things, including copying my WIN7 recovery partition to the drive, providing the above refresh and reset options, providing other troubleshooting options and also the ability to restore from a custom image, only none of them seem to work for me. Creating the Recovery Drive - the option to include my recovery partition is greyed out. The partition exists and works fine, why will it not copy it? Refresh - I imagine this would have the same issues as I described before, but this is moot because when I try it says that the "drive where Windows is installed is locked, please unlock the drive and try again" with no info on what that means and how to do it. Restore - Again, probably pointless as I can just use the DVD, but it also errors: "unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing" System Restore - should let me roll back a bad driver etc as per normal in Windows, only it simply says "To use system restore you must specify which windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and select system restore" ?!?! System Image Recovery - this seems to be offering to restore from a Windows system image, but this is deprecated in Windows 8, although you can still make one if you use the Windows 7 Backup tools, however the resultant file is too large to put on the USB stick as it's FAT formatted, and would be a massive stack of DVDs anyway. So useless. It would be nice it it would work with the custom recovery image you can use with the refresh command, but there seems no option to do this. Automatic Repair - some diagnostics, which seem useless as it happily tells me it can't fix my problem, even though I have none. Command Prompt - yay, this works! What on earth do I want to use it for... Had any of the above worked, it might be useful, but as any form of install still requires you to have the DVD, and any form of custom recovery image also requires you to have either a massive stack of DVDs or an NTFS formatted backup device in addition to the recovery drive, it sort of ruins the point. It doesn't seem rocket science. I want to create a bootable USB drive that I can refresh Windows over an existing install with, perform a clean reinstall to a bare system, or recovery a customised image with existing apps installed. If anyone can point me in a direction that allows me to make a single recovery drive do these all these things, I would appreciate it. I have a 32Gb USB3 thumb drive that I bought for this very purpose, but it's seems to be fighting to let me do anything useful. At this rate I will be making a DriveImageXML recovery stick and dumping the OS with that, which I know works, but isn't so elegant as using the proper tools..

So from the list user selects one file at a time and provides path where to store that file. In turn it also gives the server the path of file where does it exist. I am following this approach because I want to give stream like experience without file size limitation. I am able to transmit any size of file at first time. Now when the second file is requested (e.g. I have sent file a,b,c,d to the user and user has received file a successfully and now he is requesting file b) the program faces deadlock at this situation. It is waiting for socket's input stream. I put breakpoint and tried to debug it but it is not going in FileThread's run method second time. I could not find out the mistake here. Basically I am making a LAN Messenger which works on LAN. I am using SWT as UI framework.

  • Redirect output of Python program to /dev/null

    I have a Python executable, written and compiled by somebody else, that I simply need to run once halfway down my own bash script. The program uses a text-based UI, therefore waits for input before proceeding, but the key operations it performs when starting are required in my bash script. A messy (and strange) procedure I know, but unfortunately I haven't got any other options. I've gotten around forcefully closing the program with a kill signal, but the program's TUI insists on outputting to wherever it's run. I've tried redirecting both stdout and stderr to /dev/null and running the program in the background by suffixing an ampersand, but simply can't get it to play ball. I believe the cause is the program spawns other processes, and the output redirection of the parent process doesn't affect them. Is there any trick I can utilise to redirect all output from child processes too?

    I work with a large server environment that's running Windows Server 2003, 2008, and 2012 now on some boxes. We have a custom-built log viewer program that associates with two file types that I'd like to set to be the default program for all users across all boxes, so new users don't have to set the default program themselves on every box they log into. Ideally I'd like to have a simple registry script we could push out to all machines at once. I realize this likely means changing the registry entries for either HKCR or HKLM for the file extensions, but adding the program location with %1 extension to \shell\open\command value in HKLM simply opens the program and does not also load the log file. Am I just missing an open and play setting, or am I looking at this entirely wrong? (And I know the script will need to be different for 2003 and 2008, but changing the version for two scripts isn't hard) Thanks!

  • Prevent a program from creating files in a users home directory

    I run an engineering program for class, Quartus 2. The issue i am having is that every time i launch the program, it creates 10 bitmap files in my home directory. This is not so much of a problem, it just makes my OCD hurt :( I can delete them without affecting anything, but every time the program is launched it recreates them, and there is nothing in the program (that i have found) that stops these files from being created. Is there anything i can do to prevent this program, or any profram from creating files like this in my home folder?

  • Windows media player 12 not launching from custom program

    There is a program we use for testing that calls windows media player and plays a media file. The problem is that windows media player fails to load unless you open and close it before starting the program. After that the program will open it every time without a hitch but after a reboot it is lost and you must do it again. My question is what could be voilate setting could windows media player have that would be lost on a reboot? I have tried programs like Regshot to capture changes to the registry that might be delated on reboot. The code for the program is very straight forward simply calling windows media player with a parameter with the media to play. Using process montior I have determined that is is crashing shortly after the program executes it. I am at a lost on this problem as I can not find what if anything it is changing to run windows media player.

  • Can't start program by PsExec on windows server 2003 64-bit

    I ran PsExec on a windows server 2003 32-bit machine to remotely launch a program on a windows server 2003 64-bit machine. The program is a win32 program with dependency to msvcr80.dll, msvcp80.dll, msjava.dll, PocoFoundation.dll, PocoNet.dll. The process will freeze and looks like fail to start the user interface. However, the program was running fine if I log on that 64-bit machine and double click on it. What could be wrong with using PsExec to launch it? I use process explorer but couldn't find anything. Thanks. EDIT: An update, this issue is actually happening to every program that launch by psexec on that host. For example, if try to use psexec to launch notepad.exe, I can see the process name (notepad.exe) in task manager, and notepad tab on taskbar. But when click on notepad tab, the window won't show up. It looks like the application stuck in the middle of launching process.

What i want to know is i would like to write a program in win32 C or .net to mimic the same process. Just to find which process is handling which file. and if possible to close it. Or i want to know the concept behind that. I know this cannot be explained in a few paragraphs yet if i could get some references or external links to references then that could be nice.

    I just got 64 bit Vista system after being on Windows XP. I'm trying to get all my useful programs up to date, and I've recently had a problem extracting files into the 32-bit program files directory (Program Files (x86)). I'm using 7zip to extract the eclipse-SDK-3.5-win32.zip directory into C:\Program Files (x86) Unfortunately, every time I've tried to do this, 7Zip reports can not open output file C:\Program Files (x86)\eclipse\... I've been able to extract it to C:\ and then move it, I'm assuming there's some protection on the Program Files directory that is causing some problems. Any suggestions?

    this is my first time posting and i need some help. I have a file named .kv6 format. I used slab6 (the correct and only program) to edit this file. I had it chosen as default program to open it upon double click. But today it stopped using that and reset to an unknown file. So I tried to set it again and when I hit "Browse" and select slab6 again it acts like it chooses it but doesn't actually show up as the default program or Other Programs. I can choose whatever other program and it will show up as a new Default Program but won't work to open it =\ Any help you be appreciated, thanks.

  • Injection of banners in my webbrowsers possible malware

    Recently I have started to suspect that I have some kind of virus on my computer. There are 3 symptoms: Banners are being displayed on pages that doesn't use commercials, for instance when viewing screen-shots on Steam. It is only displayed after the rest of the page has been loaded and seems to be injected into it. The whole page is replaced with a commercial with the option to skip the commercial. The page is replaced with a search window claiming that the page could not be found. I have tried to scan my computer with Antivir and Adaware but only found a couple of tracking cookies. I have run HijackThis but since this isn't really my area I haven't been able to discern what shouldn't be there except the line about zonealarm since I have uninstalled it. Is there anyone out there who is able to see if there is anything suspicious in the log-file at the end or has suggestions regarding programs that might be better to find the virus than Antivir and Adaware?     Some details: Webserver: Apache/2.2.13 (FreeBSD) mod_ssl/2.2.13 OpenSSL/0.9.8e OS: FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE This is a FreeBSD Jail. I believe I use the Apache 'prefork' MPM (I run the default for FreeBSD). I use the default values for MaxClients (256) I have enabled mod_status, with "ExtendedStatus On". When I view /server-status , I see a handful of regular requests. I also see over 240 requests from the 'localhost', like these. 37-0 - 0/0/1 . 0.00 1510 0 0.0 0.00 0.00 127.0.0.2 www.example.gov OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0 38-0 - 0/0/1 . 0.00 1509 0 0.0 0.00 0.00 127.0.0.2 www.example.gov OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0 39-0 - 0/0/3 . 0.00 1482 0 0.0 0.00 0.00 127.0.0.2 www.example.gov OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0 40-0 - 0/0/6 . 0.00 1445 0 0.0 0.00 0.00 127.0.0.2 www.example.gov OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0 I also see about 2417 requests yesterday from the localhost, like these: Apr 14 11:16:40 192.168.16.127 httpd[431]: www.example.gov 127.0.0.2 - - [15/Apr/2010:11:16:40 -0700] "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - "-" "Apache (internal dummy connection)" The page at http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/InternalDummyConnection says "These requests are perfectly normal and you do not, in general, need to worry about them", but I'm not so sure. Why are there over 230 of these? Are these active connections? If I have "MaxClients 256", and over 230 of these connections, it seems that my webserver is dangerously close to running out of available connections. It also seems like Apache should only need a handful of these "internal dummy connections" We actually had two unexplained outages last night, and I am wondering if these "internal dummy connection" caused us to run out of available connections. UPDATE 2010/04/16 It is 8 hours later. The /server-status page still shows that there are 243 lines which say "www.example.gov OPTION *". I believe these connections are not active. The server is mostly idle (1 requests currently being processed, 9 idle workers). There are only 18 active httpd processes on the Unix host. If these connections are not active, why do they show up under /server-status? I would have expected them to expire a few minutes after they were initialized.

  • Unable to install Konstruktor program

    I've recently switched to Linux, having a good knowledge of how it works before switching, since I've had experience working with Ubuntu-based servers for several months. I've been trying to install a LEGO CAD program that I have found based on an open source library. Information on that is here. The program I'm looking at is called Konstruktor, and for the most part it should be working. One dependency however does not seem to be able to install. The missing dependency is "kdelibs5", which I know what it is and what it's for, but can't get it to install. When trying to install, I get this error: george@GEORGE-PC:~$ sudo apt-get install kdelibs5 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information...   • changing the default program when external harddisk is plugged in

    I have updated to ubuntu 11.10. The problem is when I plug in my external harddisk,all the files are trying to get opened with movie player. Also when I click the icon of external harddisk which shows up automatically when we plug in external harddisk in the right side panel, movie player opens up and try to open the files in it. How can I change this default opening program from movie player to file browser. Thanks in earlier.
