  I have a default amazon ec2 instance with 8GB root volume size. I am running out of space. I have: Detach the current EBS volume in AWS Management Console (Web). Create snapshot of this volume. Created a new Volume with 50G space with my snapshot. Attach the new volume back to the instance to /dev/sda1 However, when I reconnect to the account with: > df -h I can see from the management console that my new Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/xvda1 8256952 8173624 0 100% / tmpfs 308508 40 308468 1% /dev/shm It's still not using my new volume's size, how to make this work?

• Simple time profiling - strange times

  I'm trying to profile my code to check how long it takes to execute some parts of my code. I've wrapped my most time-consuming part of the code in something like that: DateTime start = DateTime.Now; ... ... // Here comes the time-consuming part ... Console.WriteLine((DateTime.Now - start).Miliseconds); The program is executing this part of code for couple of seconds (about 20 s) but in console I get the result of something about 800 miliseconds. Why is that so? What am I doing wrong?

I would have thought that AssemblyName.ReferenceMatchesDefinition should consider differences in the version, culture, and public key token attributes of an assembly name, shouldn't they? If not, what does ReferenceMatchesDefinition do that a comparison of the simple names doesn't?

• Why do my CouchDB databases grow so fast?

  I was wondering why my CouchDB database was growing to fast so I wrote a little test script. This script changes an attributed of a CouchDB document 1200 times and takes the size of the database after each change. After performing these 1200 writing steps the database is doing a compaction step and the db size is measured again. In the end the script plots the databases size against the revision numbers. The benchmarking is run twice: The first time the default number of document revision (=1000) is used (_revs_limit). The second time the number of document revisions is set to 1. The first run produces the following plot The second run produces this plot For me this is quite an unexpected behavior. In the first run I would have expected a linear growth as every change produces a new revision. When the 1000 revisions are reached the size value should be constant as the older revisions are discarded. After the compaction the size should fall significantly. In the second run the first revision should result in certain database size that is then keeps during the following writing steps as every new revision leads to the deletion of the previous one. I could understand if there is a little bit of overhead needed to manage the changes but this growth behavior seems weird to me. Can anybody explain this phenomenon or correct my assumptions that lead to the wrong expectations?

• Rails NoMethodError in loop when method exists

  Good day all. I'm running into a bit of a problem getting a script running on my production environment, even though it works just fine on my dev box. I've verified that all the requisite gems and such are the same version. I should mention that the script is intended to be run with the script/runner command. Here is a super-condensed version of what I'm trying to do, centered around the part that's broken: def currentDeal marketTime = self.convertToTimeZone(Time.new) deal = Deal.find(:first, :conditions = ["start_time ? AND market_id = ? AND published = ?", marketTime, marketTime, self.id, 1]) return deal end markets = Market.find(all) markets.each do |market| deal = market.currentDeal puts deal.subject end Now convertToTimeZone is a method attached to the model. So, this code works just fine on my dev machine, as stated. However, attempting to run it on my production machine results in: undefined method `subject' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) If, however, I go into the console on the production box and do this: def currentDeal marketTime = self.convertToTimeZone(Time.new) deal = Deal.find(:first, :conditions = ["start_time ? AND market_id = ? AND published = ?", marketTime, marketTime, self.id, 1]) return deal end market = Market.find(1) deal = market.currentDeal puts deal.subject It returns the correct value, no problem. • question about MySQL database migration

  Hi there: If I have a MySQL database with several tables on a live server, now I would like to migrate this database to another server. Of course, the migration I mean here involves some database tables, for example: add some new columns to several tables, add some new tables etc.. Now, the only method I can think of is to use some php/python(two scripts I know) script, connect two databases, dump the data from the old database, and then write into the new database. However, this method is not efficient at all. For example: in old database, table A has 28 columns; in new database, table A has 29 columns, but the extra column will have default value 0 for all the old rows. My script still needs to dump the data row by row and insert each row into the new database. Is there any tools or a better method than writing a script yourself? Here, I dont need to worry about multithread writing problems etc.., I mean the old database will be down (not open to public usage etc.., only for upgrade ) for a while. Thanks!!

• Cancel page forward/back hotkeys in Firefox with Greasemonkey

  First the background: In Firefox 3.6.3 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 when entering text into a standard the hotkey combination of Command+LeftArrow and Command+RightArrow jump the cursor to the start/end of the current line, respectively. However, when using CKEditor, FCKEditor and YUI Editor, Firefox does not seem to completely recognize that it's a text area. Instead, it drops back to the default function for those hotkeys which is to move back/forward in the browser history. After this occurs, the text in the editor is also cleared when you return to the page making it very easy to loose whatever is being worked on. I'm attempting to write a greasemonkey script that I can use to capture the events and prevent the page forward/back jumps from being executed. So far, I've been able to see the events with the following used as a .user.js script in GreaseMonkey: document.addEventListener('keypress', function (evt) { // grab the meta key var isCmd = evt.metaKey; // check to see if it is pressed if(isCmd) { // if so, grab the key code; var kCode = evt.keyCode; if(kCode == 37 || kCode == 39) { alert(kCode); } } }, false ); When installed/enabled, pressing command+left|right arrow key pops an alert with the respective code, but as soon as the dialog box is closed, the browser executes the page forward/back move. I tried setting a new code with evt.keyCode = 0, but that didn't work. So, the question is, can this Greasemonkey script be updated so that it prevents the back/forward page moves? (NOTE: I'm open to other solutions as well. Doesn't have to be Greasemonkey, that's just the direction I've tried. The real goal is to be able to disable the forward/back hotkey functionality.)

• Parallel For Loop - Problems when adding to a List - Possible .Net Bugs

  I am having some issues involving Parallel for loops and adding to a List. The problem is, the same code may generate different output at different times. I have set up some test code below. In this code, I create a List of 10,000 int values. 1/10th of the values will be 0, 1/10th of the values will be 1, all the way up to 1/10th of the values being 9. After setting up this List, I setup a Parallel for loop that iterates through the list. If the current number is 0, I add a value to a new List. After the Parallel for loop completes, I output the size of the list. The size should always be 1,000. Most of the time, the correct answer is given. However, I have seen 3 possible incorrect outcomes occur: The size of the list is less than 1,000 An IndexOutOfRangeException occurs @ doubleList.Add(0.0); An ArgumentException occurs @ doubleList.Add(0.0); The message for the ArgumentException given was: Destination array was not long enough. Check destIndex and length, and the array's lower bounds. What could be causing the errors? Is this a .Net bug? Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening? Please try the code for yourself. If you do not get an error, try it a few times.   Hello, I seem to be having some problems creating a jquery plugin. I am testing a simple plugin in firebug console and the function is not being defined as I would expect. Here is the code pattern I am using jQuery.fn.test = function () {console.log("runs")} I am trying to call the function with this call which is not working. $.test() But this call does $.fn.test() I don't think this is how it is supposed to work so I think I am doing something wrong, although all the documentation seems to agree that I should be correct.   Hello, If there an easy way to get a completed SQL statement back after parameter substitution? I.e., I want to keep a logfile of all the SQL this program runs. Or if I want to do this, will I just want to get rid of Parameters, and do the whole query the old school way, in one big string? • POST xml to php with apache2

  I'm working on an application that receives XML data via POST, processes it with a PHP script, and returns an XML response. I'm getting the XML with this PHP code: $requestStr = file_get_contents('php://input'); $requests = simplexml_load_string($requestStr); which works fine on the Linux-based product hardware using nginx as the server. However, for testing I'd like to be able to run it on my MacBook Pro, so I can avoid the "build image, install on product, reboot product, wait, test change" loop while I do targeted development on this XML processor. I enabled "web sharing" which starts up Apache, added a rewrite rule to point a convenient URI at my development source directory and used curl to send a request to my PHP script thus: curl -H "Content-Type:text/xml" -d @request.xml http://localhost/test/path/testscript "testscript" is handled by the PHP script fine, but when it goes to read "php:://input" I get nothing -- the empty string. Anyone have a clue why this would work under Linux with nginx and not under MacOS with Apache? I've googled and searched stackoverlow.com to no avail. Thanks for any answers. UPDATE: I've discovered that at least in this configuration, reading from php://stdin will work fine, while php://input will not. Who knew?

  Hi all, I got a strange issue today while working on ExtJS charts. I am trying to use some of the events for the chart when user clicks on the chart items. I found the following events are available: itemclick, itemdoubleclick, itemdrag, itemdragstart, itemdragend, itemmouseover, itemmouseout Here is my test chart where I have implemented all these events. Each event just create a list tag in my debuging console. The issue is, no matter what, itemdoubleclick do not get fired! what is the issue? I am confused, because when I copy / paste the functions into the console, all is fine and they work. I also have a function defined in my profile, and it works.
