  • Upgrading openSUSE 11.1 with Plesk Panel 9.3 to PHP 5.3

    I'm running a VPS with openSUSE 11.1 (i586). On the VPS is Parallels Plesk Panel 9.3.0 installed. The current PHP-version is PHP 5.2.11. I want to upgrade PHP to PHP 5.3, but I can't find good instructions on how to do this. If I check for updates in Zypper, it says this is the latest release. In the Plesk Updates isn't an update either, both via the webbased interface and the command line interface. On Software.openSUSE.org I can find packages for PHP 5.3.1 in both the server:php/server_apache_openSUSE_11.1-repo and the server:php/openSUSE_11.1-repo (can't post the link because I'm a newbie here). But if I add one of those to Zypper, I still don't see an update. Is there here somebody who knows how to do this? And is it completely safe to update that way? I don't want to end up with a broken VPS... Thanks! Jonathan

  • DBan not working because disk has bad sectors? [migrated]

    Attempting to wipe the drive of a laptop that I have before it's sold, and normally use DBAN to do so. However this time it starts and then finishes instantly with the following message. "DBAN finished with non-fatal errors This is usually cause by disks with bad sectors" Have tried multiple flags such as noverify to force it to skip this check (it doesn't show bad sectors in the OS scan in windows). but the error always comes back. This is the only time that I've seen this message, as every other of the few drives I've used this software on usually take 3-5 hours to do their job.

    I am currently working on a nice application about which I can't share all the details, but it will have some sort of a wiki part. In this wiki, you will be able to change the planes as well as the clubs, maybe in the future it will be possible to change the countries and manufacturers as well. But I have to think about this and I have to check how good this is. But, you will understand that it has to be expendable! That is really important. Use the planes controller with a edit page and the same for the clubs Route the planes and clubs controller to the wiki controller, so we have 1 nice "path" to edit this stuff. I want to have it called wiki that is for sure. Because that is what it is, but I am storing the planes and clubs data in its down table in my database. I think that is kinda obvious since it has to be maintainable. Right now you could edit a plane via the url: example.com/wiki/planes/edit/Duo_Discus.html Do you think that is better than example.com/planes/edit/Duo_Discus.html since it is easy to understand for the user, that he is working in the wiki instead of in the planes ? Or do you think this will break the user experience?

    While logged into our HPC cluster I used w to check out who else was logged in. I happened to notice that it looks like there's another user logged in from my (personal) computer; 19:04:47 up 40 days, 6:39, 44 users, load average: 0.10, 0.14, 0.18 USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT ME pts/4 zerg.neuron12. 18:55 0.00s 0.09s 0.04s w SOMEONE_ELSE pts/35 zerg.neuron12. Sat14 2:27m 0.08s 0.08s -bash Is this something I should be worried out - I tried to kill the other session but had a permission denied message. Is it possible we just both have the same hardware name? I'd have thought that if this were the case the server would give one of us a different name (e.g. zerg1) when we logged in to prevent confusion. This is not an area I have any experience with, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is the ability to backup and monitor the computers on your network. If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it.   • Ubuntu server very slow out of the blue sky (Rails, passenger, nginx)

    I run Ubuntu server 8.04 on Linode with multiple Rails apps under Passenger + nginx. Today I've noticed it takes quite a lot of time to load a page (5-10 secs). And it's not only websites, ssh seems to be affected too. Having no clue why this may be happening, I started to check different things. I checked how the log files are rotated, I checked if there's enough free disk space and memory.   • How do I know which hardware components are compatible when building a computer?

    I am trying to setup my own new computer. I haven't done this before and hence needed guidance from all here. I can google out the results for steps to follow for setting up my machine, but I do not understand what components are compatible with each other? For example there must be specific models of motherboard that are compatible with Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz. In general, if there is a website that can guide me on all compatible components, that would be great. If not, how would I be able to check compatibility?

  • In Google webmaster tools, can a "soft 404" be triggered by the text on the page?

    I just ran across an error in Google Webmaster Tools that I have never seen before. I manage the website for my local community band (I play trombone). One of the pages on the site is a list of our upcoming performances. It is powered by a WordPress events plugin that uses a database of upcoming events that are entered through the administration interface. We just finished up our summer and fall concerts and our next performance will be our Christmas concert. I hadn't gotten around to adding that into the website yet, so there are no upcoming events shown on the page. In fact the text on the page says: No upcoming events listed under Performance. Check out past events for this category or view the full calendar. Then in Google Webmaster Tools, this page is showing up as a "soft 404": The page is returning a 200 status and Google is indicating that he 404 is "soft". I wouldn't have expected Googlebot to be as sophisticated to parse that particular sentence. Is Googlebot able to detect that the text on the page indicates that there is currently not content and then treat it as a 404 page because of that? If Google is treating this page as a soft 404 because of the text on the page, does that mean that like regular 404 pages, the page won't show up in search results?

  • Why isn't sox able to convert to mp3?

    I installed Sox, i installed lame-398, but sox is not able to convert any file to mp3. It fails with the messages: ./../sox FAIL util: Unable to load LAME encoder library (libmp3lame). ./../sox FAIL formats: can't open output file `funktech.mp3': How can i check if lame has been installed correct? How can i get sox to find the mp3Library? edit: I did not install sox at all, it works without installing directly from the commandline. Lame was installed by following the instructions on their site: ./configure make make install which results in the following files being found in /usr/local/lib/ : libmp3lame.dylib, libmp3lame.la, libmp3lame.a Maybe symlinking libmp3lame.la, which is marked as executable, to /usr/bin would help?

  • Using Performance Monitor To Get IIS7 Response Turnaround Time

    I have a MVC2 web application on W2KR2/IIS7 that I'd like to benchmark/monitor. Some XHR requests by a browser-based client are suddenly taking 8-10 sec when they used to take much less time (as per Chrome Developer Tool timings). The underlying SQL Server queries, using the same params, runs in 1.4s according to total execution time client statistics from SSMS. I'm assuming that there are various counters that can specifically dissect time taken/waiting/processing between IIS7 itself and the web application? For example, can I check how long it takes to get a response from IIS7 app and DB? How about how long it takes to serve IIS7?

  • Shut Down took way too long because of "Background Programs"

    I tried shutting my desktop PC (with Windows7) down but after several attempts (like 4 or 5) at Start -- Shut Down, the GUI was still there and it was not shutting down. I didn't think there were any programs running when I pressed Shut Down, so I went into the taskbar (Ctrl + Alt + Del) to check out the processes. Once I did that, a screen appeared with a message stating that there are "background programs" still running and it gave me an option to "Force Shut Down" which I pressed and it shut down normally. Does anyone know why this would happen?

  • Defragment an Exchange Volume

    The Scenario: I use a dedicated volume (RAID volume) to store all of my data for my Exchange 2007 server. Today, out of curiosity, I decided to check up on how fragmented the files on this data volume were. To my surprise, the answer is extremely. So, a three part question: First and Foremost, SHOULD I defragment this volume (after a full backup of course)? Be specific as to why not if I should not, or reasons I absolutely should if I should. Second, about how much time should I allow for during this maintenance period per gigabyte. The drives are all 7200 RPM SATA drives on a Hardware RAID 5 controller (Perc 5i/6i, can't remember), the files are extremely fragmented. (Over 5000 file fragments per gigabyte). Third, is there something wrong here? It seems to me like the drive shouldn't be this fragmented. Could something be configured incorrectly that could be causing this to happen?

  • Live CD with good anti-virus software to scan/repair Windows?

    Hello, I browsed through the archives, and it seems like there's no live CD from which to run a good, up-to-date anti-virus application, at least to check whether a Windows host has been compromised The Ultimate Boot CD has only three AV applications, and their virus definition is from... 2007 In a report, ClamAV scored very low. It's nice that it's open-source, but if it's not as good as commercial alternatives... Those of you into this kind of thing, do you confirm that there's just no good live CD to inspect Windows hosts, and possibly repair them? If there is, what do you recommend? Thank you.

  • An introductory presentation about testing with MSTest, Visual Studio, and Team Foundation Server 2010

    While it was very quiet here on my blog during the last months, this was not at all true for the rest of my professional life. The simple story is that I was too busy to find the time for authoring blog posts (and you might see from my previous ones that they’re usually not of the ‘Hey, I’m currently reading X’ or ‘I’m currently thinking about Y’ kind…). Anyway. Among the things I did during the last months were setting up a TFS environment (2010) and introducing a development team to the MSTest framework (aka. Visual Studio Unit Testing), some additional tools (e.g. Moq, Moles, White),  how this is supported in Visual Studio, and how it integrates into the broader context of the then new TFS environment. After wiping out all the stuff which was directly related to my former customer and reviewing/extending the Speaker notes, I thought I share this presentation (via Slideshare) with the rest of the world. Where I work, we've gone back and forth on this subject a number of times and are looking for a sanity check. Here's the question: Should Business Objects be data containers (more like DTOs) or should they also contain logic that can perform some functionality on that object. Example - Take a customer object, it probably contains some common properties (Name, Id, etc), should that customer object also include functions (Save, Calc, etc.)? One line of reasoning says separate the object from the functionality (single responsibility principal) and put the functionality in a Business Logic layer or object. The other line of reasoning says, no, if I have a customer object I just want to call Customer.Save and be done with it. Why do I need to know about another class to save a customer if I'm consuming the object? Our last two projects have had the objects separated from the functionality, but the debate has been raised again on a new project. Which makes more sense and why??

All IP's reverse DNS entries should resolve back to IP address (MX record's name -> IP -> IP Reverse -> IP). Many mail servers are configured to reject e-mails from IPs with inconsistent reverse DNS configuration. How do I properly configure and it so it goes to an IP?
