  Hi all, I am learning java. I am trying to use composite design pattern. I am trying to use following logic. ( Don't laugh I know it is very basic :) ) Item -> interface Folder -> class File -> class In folder class, can I create an arraylist of Item to store files information? ArrayList<Item> info = ArrayList<Item>(); Or should I use Folder Arraylist? ArrayList<Folder> info = ArrayList<Folder>(); I don't know if interface can store real data as there is no variable just function definitions. Thanks for helping a newbie :)

• n*n blocks and polygons

  Hi, this is actually meant to be for a function called roipoly in matlab but it can be considered a general case problem. Roipoly is a function which lets u select a polygon over an image, and returns a binary mask where u can use it to get indices of the desired polygon. (It is just a normal polygon after all). My application (K-Nearest Neighbor) requires that i make n*n blocks out of the data i have (the polygon), i.e. If i have a polygon (a road or a piece of land), i want a n*n square moving over it while avoiding intersection with edges and putting those n*n pixels into some variable. This problem would be a lot easier if i had all my shapes in the form of rectangles, but that unfortunately isn't the case. I might have something going diagonal, circular or just irregular.

In terms of performance, it would seem smartest to not create any unnecessary variables which use up memory if its not needed. Or is this a situation where its technically true but doesn't yield any real world results due to the size of the data in question. Forgive me, I know this is a very basic question.

  I have a HTML node like so: <b>Bold text</b> A variable $el contains a DOMElement reference to the text of that HTML node ("Bold text"), got from the XPath expression //b/text() I want to change the element to <b><span>Bold Text</span></b> So I tried: $span = $doc->createElement('span', "Bold Text"); $el->parentNode->replaceChild($span,, $el) which fails because parentNode is null. So, as a test, I tried: $el-insertBefore($span, $el); which throws no errors but produces no change in the output. Any thoughts?

  I need to set various variables depending on what a user clicks. Those variables then need to be accessed by other movieclips. The problem is that at the time of clicking, those "other movieclips" don't exist on the timeline yet. What I have done is assign the variable to the parent movieclip, although I guess I could just as easily set them to the root. Then I would grab that value when the relevant clip is initiated. // set - works MovieClip(parent).aMovieClip.someVariable = myVal; // get? - doesn't work getVar = MovieClip(parent).aMovieClip.someVariable; the above doesn't work - what is the correct way to get that value whenever I need it. I guess it's a case of getting and setting global variables

But before splitting I would like to shuffle the matrix.   I'm developing a C# web application in VS 2008. I let the user select an input file and then I store the file path in a string variable. However, it stores this path as "C:\\folder\\...". So my question is how do I convert this file path into single "\"? To clarify more, this is my code in context.   I am aware of passing data between jsp in spring web flow. Is it possible to transfer data between html pages driven by spring web flow. I don't want to use the HTML5 local storage capabilities. Example: Page 1: Search box for an employee id. Page 2: Search result for the employee details. Two ways that I could think: Get the employee details in page 1 by ajax and pass the result to the page two. Pass the employee id to page 2 and get the result by ajax in onload. In both case I need to pass any variable/data. I am confused in doing this. Is there anything in the Spring webflow using which I could do this? Thanks in advance, Easwar

I want to count the number of times b element is present (its variable) And i want this count before parsing, so that I can declare an array of appropriate size. One way is to run count then separately and other way is dynamic array (List Array) Is there any other better way to do this? Parameter ds is of type OtherDLL.BaseObj which is defined in a referenced ActiveX DLL. ds.Data is a variant 2-dimensional array (one dimension carries the data, the other one carries the column index. ds.Columns is a Collection of columns in 'ds.Data`. Assuming there are at least 400 rows of data and 25 columns, this code takes about 15 seconds to run on my machine. Kind of unbelievable. However if I copy the variant array to a local variable, so: function Foo(ds as OtherDLL.BaseObj) dim lngRowIndex as long dim lngColIndex as long dim v as variant v = ds.Data for lngRowIndex = 1 to ubound(v, 2) for lngColIndex = 1 to ds.Columns.Count Debug.Print v(lngRowIndex, lngColIndex) next next end function the entire thing processes in barely any noticeable time (basically close to 0). • How do set default values in django for an HttpRequest.GET?

  I have a webpage that displays data based on a default date. The user can then change their view of the data by slecting a date with a date picker and clicking a submit button. I already have a variable set so that if no date is chosen, a default date is used.... so what's the problem? The problem comes if the user trys to type in the url page without a parameter... like so: http://mywebpage/viewdata (example A) instead of http://mywebpage/viewdata?date= (example B) I tried using: if request.method == 'GET': but apparently, even example A still returns true. I'm sure I'm doing some obvious beginner's mistake but I'll ask anyway... Is there a simpler way to handle example A other than passing the url to a string and checking the string for "?date="?

Using the following php, I pass an array: $c = array(3,2,7); echo json_encode($c); My javascript is as follows: $.post("getLatLong.php", { latitude: 500000}, function(data){ arrayData = data document.write(arrayData) document.write(arrayData[0]); document.write(arrayData[0]); document.write(arrayData[0]); }); </script> What is printed out on screen is [3,2,7][3, I'm trying to understand how json_encode works - I though I would be able to pass the array to a variable, and then access it like a normal javascript array, but it views my array as one large text string. How do ensure that it reads it like an array?

• Displaying Fields (and/instead of Properties) in a PropertyGrid

  I'd like to use a PropertyGrid to manipulate the data on some objects, however these objects don't have properties, they have fields. Thus a property grid doesn't display them (high five MS!) Before anyone posts "just use properties": I can't at the moment.. these objects are DTOs and are used to send data to a VB6 Interop dll, thus all the parameters for the method calls are "ref" parameters (high five MS!), and C# won't compile if you use a property instead of a field or variable (high five MS!). No, I am not going to create local variables for every property on any given object. There many, many fields, and many, many test cases that would need updating, as well as the production code it self, and this post/question may be the path of least resistance. :)

• Empty Structures compile in VB 10+

  This is at least a documentation error, if not a bug. In VB.NET prior to .NET 4.0 (i.e. VB.NET 7 through 9) an empty Structure declaration fails at compile-time with error BC30281: Structure 'MySimpleEmpty' must contain at least one instance member variable or Event declaration. E.g. The following two structures compile successfully in VB10, and not prior: Structure MySimpleEmpty End Structure Public Structure AnotherEmpty Public Const StillEmpty As Boolean = True End Structure I note the documentation for the Error BC30281 stops at VB9, but the documentation for the Structure statement still has the datamemberdeclarations as required even as of VB11 (.NET 4.5 VS2012). These two Structures compile in VB11 (VS2012) as well. (Thanks John Woo.) Is there some blog entry or documentation confirming this is an intended change or a bug in VB10 and later?

  Some people have argued that the C# 4.0 feature introduced with the dynamic keyword is the same as the "everything is an Object" feature of VB. However, any call on a dynamic variable will be translated into a delegate once and from then on, the delegate will be called. In VB, when using Object, no caching is applied and each call on a non-typed method involves a whole lot of under-the-hood reflection, sometimes totaling a whopping 400-fold performance penalty. Have the dynamic type delegate-optimization and caching also been added to the VB untyped method calls, or is VB's untyped Object still so slow?

• Can C/C++ compiler report struct member offset

  Hello, everyone. I'd like to ask, can compiler(e.g. Visual C++) generate a report(.txt) telling struct member offset for a struct/all structs? If so, it helps debugging quite a lot. For example, when you read disassembler code in the debugger, it can be easier to associate an offset value to a struct member. Also, it is better to have compiler report offset of each local variable on a function stack frame(e.g. the offset relative to ebp on an X86 machine). Thank you in advance.

I was going to use synchronize but that i don't think will work here because of the variable being used in the if statement. I read online about final Lock lock = new ReentrantLock(); but I am a bit confused on how to use it in this case properly with the try/finally block. Can I get a quick example?   Weird question I guess.. But I am not very math wiz - soo here goes.. I am trying to create a patterne (or variable patterns based on selection) based on x and y numbers (2 rows and 4 columns) and the direction of the counting of x numbers like: 1-2-3-4 5-6-7-8 That one is easy, when number of x-columns is reached, next line and continue x count. But with eg. this one (still 2 rows and 4 columns): 1-2-3-4 8-7-6-5 upsie.. what if it is eg. 3++ rows and still 4 columns? 1-2-3-4 8-7-6-5 9-10-11-12 what would be the formula for this - or other possible variations (teaser for variations): 9-10-11-12 8-7-6-5 1-2-3-4 or reversed

  This is my scenario I have an view(page) with list of items, a user could select single or multiple items from this page and click on a "Add to Group" button. Then a modal dialog(JQuery dialog) will be shown, from that he could select group, then press the add button. Which causes the items selected in the parent page is added to that particular group. So, which is the best way to pass the selected items to the modal pop-up? Though the query string ? - what happens if the no:of items selected is large, will the url support that much characters Keep the list in the parent page in a javascript variable and return the selected group from the modal pop-up?   i spent some time with the environment variable CA_COLOR_OPAQUE = 1 and have my findings to share. things that make a CALayer non-opaque (slow, more memory, ...): * contents with alpha (like an NSImage with an icon) * NSImage/CGImage from a pdf as contents (even when the pdf does not contain any alpha and opaque=YES) * backgroundColor = nil * CATextLayer with text in a (because it is contents with alpha) * rounded corners? maybe/sometimes * masksToBounds? not necessarily as we scale most of tree with CATransform3DScale on sublayerTransform i found also these rather irritating non-opaque: * CAGradientLayer that is somewhere down in this scaled tree (even when set all the gradient colors without alpha) * edgeAntialiasingMask != 0 of a layer that is somewhere down in this scaled tree the last two do not make sense to me. why should it be non opaque? what do i see? if anyone has any thoughts on these findings, i'm happy to learn as i couldn't find such a list yet.

  I'm working on a program that determines if lines intersect. I'm using matrices to do this. I understand all the math concepts, but I'm new to Python and NumPy. I want to add my slope variables and yint variables to a new matrix. They are all floats. I can't seem to figure out the correct format for entering them. Here's an example: import numpy as np x = 2 y = 5 w = 9 z = 12 I understand that if I were to just be entering the raw numbers, it would look something like this: matr = np.matrix('2 5; 9 12') My goal, though, is to enter the variable names instead of the ints.

• PHP Object Oriented Web Application

  I have a class called "Layout" for the layout of the page, another class called "User" for the user. Every page I create, I instantiate a new Layout. When a user logs in, there is a new User instantiated. How do I get an instance of the layout class to know about the instantiated user? I could also save the entire instance of the User in a session variable. I assume that's a bad idea though. What are the best practices for this?
