• Apache Options -Indexes give me 404 instead of 403, why?

  I have an Apache/2.2.21 (Debian) webserver, which I disabled directory listing with Options -Indexes but now I got 404 error for a directory, but I think I should get a 403. I have no idea why I get 404, rather than 403. What should I check? I have disabled autoindex module, after it I got a 404 for every URL that request a directory listing (eg: www.somesite.com/dir ). How can I get a 403 for this. (The dir does exist) As a try I also put Options -Index in the end of main config file (apache2.conf).

• 2D Side Scrolling game and "walk over ground" collision detection

  The question is not hard, I'm writing a game engine for 2D side scrolling games, however I'm thinking to my 2D side scrolling game and I always come up with the problem of "how should I do collision with the ground". I think I couldn't handle the collision with ground (ground for me is "where the player walk", so something heavily used) in a per-pixel way, and I can't even do it with simple shape comparison (because the ground can be tilted), so what's the correct way? I'know what tiles are and i've read about it, but how much should be big each tile to not appear like a stairs?Are there any other approach? I watched this game and is very nice how he walks on ground: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmSAQwbbig8&feature=player_embedded If there are "platforms" in mid air, how should I handle them?I can walk over them but I can't pass "inside". • Windows 7 PC crashes after being locked a few minutes

  I have a problem with an Optiplex 755 PC running (32-bit) Windows 7 Professional. I just installed the operating system last week, and ever since, it seems to crash when I lock the screen. It doesn't happen immediately; it's usually after I walk away, so a few minutes (but I'm not sure exactly how many). I have this non-specific error in the Event log. I've run a chkdsk, thinking it might be hard drive-related, but that didn't help. Far more interesting, however, is the application of the hack to flowers. • AWS RDS MySQL remote connection extremely slow

  I have a site hosted on AWS EC2 (Elastic Beanstalk), with a MySQL database hosted on AWS RDS. Everything works fine on the production server, fast and all. However when I try to connect remotely from my local machine, it sometimes gets extremely slow (like 4 minutes to load the list of tables), or simply times out. I added my IP in the security group (which I did correctly, since it sometimes works). When it doesn't work, I at the same time check the prod server and it still looks good.

• Ulimit settings in Oracle 11g on Linux 5

  Is there an issue with "Ulimit -Hn" being set too low (at 1024) when (Oracle recommend 65536)? This is for Oracle 64-bit 11g on Linux 5. It is one of the settings that appears to be woefully short of its recommendation. But I am also aware that the database server in question is an Oracle Data Guard Local Standby and should only really have a connection or two from its Primary database server (to ship the redo logs across). The Local Standby database server has 'hung' about 3 times in as many months and then requires a reboot. I do not have access to this server, so rely on others to look at logs etc. The sanity check on kernel params uncovered the low value for "ulimit -Hn". Has anyone ever seen that 'low' value cause a hang or crash?

  I have written a PHP application using Windows and XAMPP. I've been trying to run it on Ubuntu 10.10 with Lighttpd 1.4.26. Parts of the application work fine, but whenever I try to log in, I get a 500 - Internal Server Error page.   I'm wondering if there is a good extant pattern (language here is Python/Django but also interested on the more abstract level) for creating a business logic layer that can be created without coding. For example, suppose that a house rental should only be available during a specific time. The thing is, it would have to be flexible enough to encompass a wide variety of rules: avoiding duplicates/overlaps (to continue the example "You already have a reservation for this time/location") logic rules ("You can't rent a house to yourself", "This house is in a different place from your chosen destination") sanity tests ("You've set a rental price that's 10x the normal rate. Are you sure this is the right price?" Things like that. Before I recreate the wheel, I'm wondering if there are already methods out there for doing something like this.

• Cannot run SSH or send commands to /etc/init.d/ssh

  When I attempt to execute any commands such as /etc/init.d/ssh restart or /etc/init.d/ssh start, I get no output. It just goes to the next command line (Ubuntu Hardy). I can even pass in junk parameters such as /etc/init.d/ssh asldkfjalskfdj and i get no warnings or error messages, it just goes to the next line. I can check in my processes: lsof -i :22 and don't see my ssh process. I also don't see my SSH process when i run: netstat -na --inet Any troubleshooting suggestions?

  I have been using the calendar in Windows Live Mail for months now. When I logged on yesterday, all of the data and appointments I have been inputting for months is gone. The calendar is completely blank. I have performed a system restore with no luck. I have run in safe mode with no luck. I have run a check disk in DOS with no luck. Any other ideas on what I can do to find my calendar info? Could the file be corrupt? I rely on this calendar and all of my info is gone, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

  I was surprised to hear from this Reuters video that it was possible for a page loaded on one tab to access and/or inject data onto another page loaded on a different tab. TL;DW (too lazy; didn't watch) The interviewee in the video suggests that when doing online banking, the user exit his browser (thus closing all windows) and start a new browser session with just your banking page/tab open. Allegedly, malicious sites can check if you have your banking site open and inject commands onto those sites. Can someone confirm and/or deny this claim? Is it only possible even if there is not parent/child relationship between windows/tabs?

• Planning for the Recovery

  As we plan for 2011, there are many positive signs in the global economy, but also some lingering issues. Planning no longer is about extrapolating past performance and adjusting for growth. It is now about constantly testing the temperature of the water, formulating scenarios, assessing risk and assigning probabilities.  So how does one plan for recovery and improve forecast accuracy in such a volatile environment?  Here are some suggestions from a recent article I wrote, which was published in the December Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) newsletter from the AFP (Association of Financial Professionals): Increase the frequency of forecasting Get more line managers involved in the planning and forecasting process Re-consider what's being measured - i.e. key financial and operational metrics Incorporate risk and probability into forecasts Reduce reliance on spreadsheets - leverage packaged EPM applications To learn more about these best practices, check out the FP&A section of the AFP website and register to receive the FP&A newsletter.  AFP recently launched a new topic area focused on the FP&A function and items of interest to this group of finance professionals.  In addition to the FP&A quarterly newsletter, AFP will be publishing articles, running webinars and will have an FP&A track in their annual conference, which is in Boston next November.  Brian Kalish, AFP's Finance Lead, is hoping this initiative creates a valuable networking and information-sharing resource for FP&A professionals. • Booting from USB on Mac Air (using setup_mac_usb_boot.sh)

  So, I've been working on this for hours and it's getting a little tiring. As some of you may know, installing Ubuntu on Macs is frequently an adventure, and I'm experiencing that right now. The part I'm hung up on at the moment is making a bootable USB. I would just use a CD, but my laptop is a MacBook Air (which doesn't have a CD drive), and I don't own an external CD drive. I initially attempted to use the command line method supplied by the Ubuntu documentation here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/How%20to%20install%20Ubuntu%20on%20MacBook%20using%20USB%20Stick However, that wasn't even recognized by rEFIt even when I made a number of different modifications to the process, so I quickly decided to look elsewhere. I came across this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookAir4-2#Basic_Installation_Instructions This ended up working to a large extent. If I choose the supplied grub from rEFIt, it will bring me to the Ubuntu grub, asking me to try it, install, or check the disk. And if I choose to boot Linux directly from rEFIt, it will bring me to the language selection menu. But when I make my selection from either of these menus it pauses for about ten seconds and then gives me a command line error message. It begins with kernel panic - not syncing timer doesn't work through interrupt, and then shows about eight file names. Does anyone here have any ideas as to what can be causing this? I also tried the script with both Ubuntu 11.10 (the current version when the script was written) and 12.04.

Now on press of enter this website redirects me to http://example.com/load/1/ and then http://example.com/load/2/ and then I finally landed on this url http://example.com/load/3/. These redirection happens at website end, I am not aware where I am going. But I finally landed on this url: http://example.com/load/3/ I want to track where all my browser gone all urls, I am not seeing it in my history as its redirect at website end. Is there any firefox addon or some toll which can track this for me? I am not sure where to ask this question, so asking it here, moderators please check!

Anyway, I was at a local restaurant yesterday and after placing my order I was thinking about having to get home and log in to check some SQL Servers and then the thought came to me that as we were near civilisation there was likely to be a 3G signal that might actually make using the web browser on my phone bearable. It was surprisingly fast on my HTC Desire, it was almost as good as Wi-Fi. RedGate SQL Monitor works fine on the default HTC browser and here is the proof, me checking the servers while I am waiting for the meal to arrive. • How do you use environment variables, such as %CommonProgramFiles%, in the PATH and have them recognized by services.exe?

  I'm trying to add C:\Program Files\Common Files\xxx\xxx to the system PATH environment variable by appending %CommonProgramFiles%\xxx\xxx to the existing path. After rebooting, I open a command prompt and check the PATH. It expands correctly. However, when using Process Explorer from Sysinternals to view the Environment variables on services.exe, it shows the unexpanded version. Coincidentally, the paths using %SystemRoot% expand and are recognized just fine. I've tried altering the PATH through the Environment Variables window from System Properties and through direct Registry manipulation, neither seems to work. Is it possible to use other environment variables, besides %SystemRoot% in PATH and have services.exe understand it?

• ms sql 2005 server role problem

  On one of our sql 2005 servers we are no longer able to give any users server roles (ex. sysadmin). It appears to be successful both through the UI and through code. But when we check in the db and in the UI the role is unchecked and not shown for the user in the master db. Permissions don't seem to be the issue as we are testing this as system administrator levels of access. There are also no errors in the log. Any ideas? Thanks, Brandon

To format this card I have tried 1) DD command 2) mkfs -f vfat command 3) creating registry entry under storage device policy in window with write value 0 4) disk part command in window to clear attributes in which it show all attributes are clear ie no write protection 5) I format card in windows through control panel - administrative tools- computer management - disk management, then it show as formatted but when I tried to create new partition it give CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK error 6) I downloaded a format utility from transcend site and formatted first it shows write protected again doing format it formats and tells to remove and reinsert after reinsertion it shows the previous data as it is

• One server, Two APC UPS on redundant power supplies : How to trigger shutdown ?

  I have a server racked and its redundant power supplies plugged in two APC Smart-UPS 3000 XLM. Each UPS is connected to two different mains power sources. Two instances of apcupsd are running, each one connected to its own UPS. They can both detect when an UPS is on Battery, and each UPS can then trigger a shutdown on the server. Question is : How NOT to shutdown if ONLY ONE UPS runs out of battery ? Note : Smart-UPS 3000 XLM has a "Power Sync" Function that is able to connect to its peer and detect its status. But when I pulled the plug out of one of them, the Shutdown order was sent anyway. I'm thinking about modifying the shutdown scripts to check with "apcaccess" if the other ups is down. Any experience on this would be appreciated !

• Dlink DIR-615 suddenly stops working - Orange internet light

  I unplugged my Dlink DIR-615 router last night from the wall due to a storm rolling in. I've done this countless times, no problem. However, when I went to plug it in and use the internet today, nothing. Check everything, cycled everything. Hard reset the router, nothing. The little globe on the front is red/orange, and it should be green. Windows gives me an error of a "DNS Issue", and the internet works when connected directly to the modem. How can I fix this issue? Why would it suddenly stop working?
