• Improving the efficiency of multiple concurrent Core Animation animations

  I have a view in my app that is very similar to the month view in the built-in Calendar app. There's a subview that holds the individual cells (a custom UIView subclass that draws text into its layer), and when the user navigates to the next "month", I create the new cells and slide the view to show them. When the animation stops, I remove the old, hidden cells and set things up so it's ready to go for the next animation. This all works nicely. However, I'd like to animate the cells' text color, as in the Calendar app, so that the outgoing ones transition to a lighter color and the incoming ones transition to a darker color. The problems is that I can have as many as 70 cells, so doing individual animations is very slow -- between 5-10 fps on my iPhone 3GS. I'm trying to find a less computationally intense way of doing this. My reading of the Shark results is that the majority of the time is spent redrawing the text for each frame for each frame. This makes sense, since text rendering is hardly the cheapest operation. I've considered creating a second view -- one holding the "outgoing" state and one holding the "incoming" state and using a single opacity animation to gradually reveal the updated cells while both are sliding. I'm concerned that instead of having 70 cells, I'll have 140, which seems like a lot of views. So, is that too many views or would there be a better way of doing this?

• How do i set this window to topmost?

  How do i set my window above all other? I need a bad but noticeable msg box that closes on its own. Msg is a dummy form which is empty. All i want is its title. The problems with the code is the window isnt created 0,0 (its just whereever windows feels like putting it). The width is correct but i notice if i click firefox or another app window my app doesnt pop up. I know it is being shown bc i can see it in the taskbar at the bottom for a brief second. • One Common View In Every ViewController

  I am having a hard time wording this when searching the internet so I am just going to ask the question. I have an options view in my app that slides into view when the user clicks a button. This options view will display app information like settings. I want this options view to be displayed on every view controller in my app. I do not want to copy and paste the code for the options view into every viewcontroller file. The options view has quite a few outlets and actions and also calls many delegates. How can I reuse this options view in all my view controllers without adding all the outlets, actions, and delegate methods each time? I was going to make a new file with public methods, but I would still have to copy the outlets. Would this public methods file have to include delegate methods as well then? Let me know if my question does not make sense. I am hoping there is a standard way of implementing something like this.

• How to improve my software project's speed?

  I'm doing a school software project with my class mates in Java. We store the info on a remote db. When we start the application we pull all the information from the database and transform it into objects to use in our application (using java sql statemens). In the application we edit some of these objects and then when we exit the application we save or update information in the database using Hibernate. As you see we dont use Hibernate for pulling in information, we use it just for saving and updating. We have 2, but very similar problems. The loading of object(when we start the app) and the saving of objects(with Hibernate) in the db(when closing the app) is taking too much time. And our project its not a huge enterprise application, its a quite small app, we just manage some students, teachers, homeworks and tests. So our db is also very very small. How could we increase performance ? later edit: if we use a local database it runs very quick, it just runs slow on remote databases

• Make UIViewController outside Navigation Controller

  i have a question for you. I'm working on this app that has a walkthrough/tutorial screens and also login ones. On each of this screens there is a button to skip this part and go directly to use the app, without completing the registration (you know, so that people can test it before signing-in). As you can see i'm using Storyboards. The NowPlaying04 ViewController is actually the app itself. Obviously, when the user will be a registered one, i should also be able to jump right back to that screen, skipping the walkthrough and signin process. The first question is: how is the best way to structure this? The second quesion is: how i can make a ViewController outside that Navigation controller. Cause as you can see now, the NowPlaying04 ViewController inherits the top navigation bar. Which is a thing that i don't want. I don't need that. I hope that you have understood my question. I'll appreciate any help. Programmatically or by dragging stuff around, i'm ok with all the solutions. The important thing is that it works correctly! :-)

• IIS7.5 Domain Account Application Pool Identity for SQL Server Authentication

  In Windows Server 2003/IIS6 land we typically create an app pool that runs as the identity of an AD account created with minimal privileges simply for that purpose. This same domain user would also be granted access to SQL Server so that any ASP.NET application in that app pool would be able to connect to SQL Server with Integrated Security=SSPI. We are making a brave move to the world of Windows Server 2008 R2/IIS7.5 and are looking to replicate this model, but I am struggling with how to make the application pool in IIS7.5 run as the identity of an AD account? I know this sounds simple and hopefully it is, but my attempts so far have been fruitless. Should the application pool identity be a 'Custom account' for a domain account? Does the domain account need to be added to any groups?

• Zantaz's EAS exchange archive product doesn't integrate with Outlook in Windows 7

  I work at a place that uses Exchange with Outlook for mail, and they also use a product from Zantaz called "EAS" which does server-side archiving of old messages. One of the artifacts of this archival is that email attachments are missing from the archived messages when viewed in Outlook. EAS has a client tool that plugs into Outlook that enables easy retrieval of those archived messages and their attachments, but it doesn't seem to work when installed on Windows 7. I have no direct evidence of this, other than that it simply doesn't work on my Windows 7 machine, and some of our network support staff seem to corroborate this. The symptom is that Outlook seems to know nothing of the existence of this EAS app. The EAS app also has a system tray icon which is there and offers some minimal functionality, but the real goodness is the Outlook integration, which I sorely miss.   This is a pretty common occurrence. Every two days or so iTunes will crash on me with this error. FYI, 1073741824 is 2^30, which is gigabyte. The crash log is below if you're interested.   I'm new with Rundeck and completely amazed with it and I'm trying to execute a job and my scenario is detailed below: Rundeck is configured with ssh passwordless authentication for user master between node Server (rundeck server) and node Target (remote Solaris host) for user "master" In node Target I want to execute a script /app/acme/stopApp.sh with a user appmanager Normally and manually, when I need to run script above I proceed with ssh master@server sudo su - appmanager or simply ssh -t master@server 'sudo su - appmanager' works without password and finally run (as appmanager) /app/acme/stopApp.sh But I'm not sure how can I reproduce these steps using Rundeck. I read in some previous messages that for each job line rundeck use a new ssh connection, so the workflow below always fails for me with the messages: sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified Remote command failed with exit status 1 Please someone could help me with some information to solve this issue. Without this functionality I wouldn't be able to introduce a little DevOps in my department. I read the user guide and admin guide but I couldn't find an easy example, neither in this forum, to follow.

  I'm planning on setting up a server using ubuntu lucid lynx, which uses upstart.I'm not finding the docs too intuitive, so i'd like to ask a solution for my specific problem. I'm currently using a script to start up my IPV6 tunnel with free6/gogo6 - right now its a simple script invoking a single command, and its configuration file #! /bin/sh /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c -f /usr/local/gw6c/bin/gw6c.conf Of course, when this goes down, it tends to be silent, and so i'd need to get in and restart it I'd like to set up an upstart script which will start this app on startup, functionally identical to the script i have restart this script as 'root' should the app fail enable me to restart the tunnel should anything go wrong.

• After forced quit, “killall Finder” says “No matching processes…” but PID still exists?

  Here's one for ya. Upon a forced quit of the Finder with unsuccessful relaunch, "killall Finder" in terminal returns: "No matching processes belonging to you were found" Oddly enough, the PID for finder does actually show up after a "ps -A" to reveal all processes. But the time is perpetually listed as 0:00:00, upon repeated PID listings. I tried the following to manually launch it: open /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app But it puked: LSOpenFromURLSpec() failed with error -600 for the file /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app. Any other ideas on a Finder relaunch that don't involve rebooting? (I usually have 6 spaces open at once, each with a handful of apps and it's a pain reloading them all.)

However, whenever I make internal HTTP requested to servers on the internal network with a fully qualified dns name, the proxy denies the connection. • Google Talk chat status permanently available

  I logged into google talk from the blackberry talk application and it set the status as available. Now google talk shows me as being permanently available even though I have logged out of every possible place I can think of (including the phone). I have used the gmail feature that allows one to log out of all other locations. I have logged out and uninstalled the blackberry app. Showing status as online isn't such a problem if the chats weren't being eaten by this unknown app as well. I primarily use google chat from gmail, so if there is a way to get my chat requests properly routed to the gmail window, please let me know.

• Zantaz's EAS exchange archive product doesn't integrate with Outlook in Windows 7

  I work at a place that uses Exchange with Outlook for mail, and they also use a product from Zantaz called "EAS" which does server-side archiving of old messages. One of the artifacts of this archival is that email attachments are missing from the archived messages when viewed in Outlook. EAS has a client tool that plugs into Outlook that enables easy retrieval of those archived messages and their attachments, but it doesn't seem to work when installed on Windows 7. I have no direct evidence of this, other than that it simply doesn't work on my Windows 7 machine, and some of our network support staff seem to corroborate this. The symptom is that Outlook seems to know nothing of the existence of this EAS app. The EAS app also has a system tray icon which is there and offers some minimal functionality, but the real goodness is the Outlook integration, which I sorely miss. So, my question is this: does anyone here know whether it's possible to coerce this EAS product into working correctly in Windows 7?

• Why are my uWSGI processes dying immediately?

  I'm using Supervisor and the uWSGI Emperor mode. When I set limit-as to 512 (MB), workers die instantly (respawn, die, respawn, die, every 3/4 of a second or so): [uwsgi] workers = 4 threads = 40 limit-as = 512 harakiri = 20 max-requests = 1600 ... non-performance/memory/processor-related settings ommitted But, if I change limit-as to: [uwsgi] workers = 4 threads = 40 limit-as = 1024 harakiri = 20 max-requests = 1600 ... non-performance/memory/processor-related settings ommitted and restart uwsgi, the problem is gone immediately. In order to put a sham in this, I've modified the setting back to 512, restarted again, and the problem is back immediately. Notes: My app is a simple Django app without much additional Python setup during start-up time.

• Since updating to today's version of Skype on Win8, Skype won't even log in

  I am using the desktop (win32 not appstore) Skype on Windows 8. I accepted an auto-update today which now will not let me log into skype at all. I wiped out the AppData\Roaming\Skype folder because that's how you get Skype back in the past when it has gone stupid, but that didn't help either. I do not get any error message, just the circular progress indicator that lasts forever. (Okay, so far it's been 30 minutes. It may eventually time out yet.) Other ideas please? I tried the Windows 8 App Store Skype app (WinRT), which I hate, I guess I'll go back and install that for now. Update Skype 6.0.126 seems to be completely broken on my Win8 machine.

• Mysql out of disk space

  I have just finished developing a rails app which has a mysql db as a backend. The app is meant for high traffic and will store lots of information. I am planning to set up my own web server and host the site from it. If in future my disk space runs out i would want to expand by adding more space. But say if my mysql database is housed in my /disk0s1 and by adding a new drive i have more partitions (and hence more disk space), how then would i extend my database to store information on those partitions too, and at the same time prevent any information from being written on the original partition. Should i go for multiple databases? if so how? If i went for a hosting solution i wouldn't be bothering about this as i would just have to worry about making payments for the extra space :) I always wondered how space is added on-the-go by these webhosts. Is there any specific mysql configuration that i have to make?

For example newsbeauter, the rss reader wants me to enter my google account password in a ~/.newsbeauter/config if I want to read google reader feeds. Mutt also sort of wants a password in a text file, but gives an option of entering it on every login. Is there any secure workaround to storing a password in a config file like that (eg for newsbeauter)? I was thinking of running the app as root, but that doesn't seem right. Or somehow creating and deleting the file everytime I use the app. Any ideas?

• Iptables config breaks Java + Elastic Search communication

  I am trying to set up a firewall for a server hosting a java app and ES. Both are on the same server and communicate to each other. The problem I am having is that my firewall configuration prevents java from connecting to ES. Not sure why really.... I have tried lot of stuff like opening the port range 9200:9400 to the server ip without any luck but from what I know all communication inside the server should be allowed with this configuration. The idea is that ES should not be accessible from outside but it should be accessible from this java app and ES uses the port range 9200:9400. • Automatically Applying Security Updates for AWS Elastic Beanstalk

  I've been a fan of Heroku since it's earliest days. But I like the fact that AWS Elastic Beanstalk gives you more control over the characteristics of the instances. One thing I love about Heroku is the fact that I can deploy an app and not worry about managing it. I am assuming Heroku is ensuring all OS security updates are timely applied. I just need to make sure my app is secure. My initial research on Beanstalk shows that although it builds and configures the instances for you, after that it moves to a more manual management process. Security updates won't automatically be applied to the instances. It seems there are two areas of concerns: New AMI releases - As new AMI releases hit it seems we would want to run the latest (presumably most secure). But my research seems to indicate you need to manually launch a new setup to see the latest AMI version and then create a new environment to use that new version. Is there a better automated way of rotating your instances into new AMI releases? In between releases there will be security updates released for packages. Seems we want to upgrade those as well. My research seems to indicate people install commands to occasionally run a yum update. But since new instances are created/destroyed based on usage it seems that the new instances would not always have the updates (i.e. the time between the instance creation and the first yum update). So occasionally you will have instances that aren't patched. And you are also going to have instances constantly patching themselves until the new AMI release is applied. My other concern is that perhaps these security updates haven't gone through Amazon's own review (like the AMI releases do) and it might break my app to automatically update them. I know Dreamhost once had a 12 hour outage because they were applying debian updates completely automatically without any review. I want to make sure the same thing doesn't happen to me. So my question is does Amazon provide a way to offer fully managed PaaS like Heroku? Or is AWS Elastic Beanstalk really more of just a install script and after that you are on your own (other than the monitoring and deployment tools they provide)?
