    Hello, Recently I stumbled upon this curious question: What is importing for yourself when programming: process or result? I found myself that I love outcome, when everything is done! So I tried to ask some colleagues at work, but all of them responded that they like the development process the most. Myself I like process too, but not as much as outcome. So to which people category you belong too? And if there is a reason, could you express why?

  • Integrating Jython Cpython

    I am about to begin a project where I will likely use PyQt or Pyside. I will need to interface with a buggy 3rd party piece of server software that provides C++ and Java APIs. The Java APIs are a lot easier to use because you get Exceptions where with the C++ libraries you get segfaults. Also, the Python bindings to the Java APIs are automatic with Jython whereas the Python bindings for the C++ APIs don't exist. So, how would a CPython PyQt client application be able to communicate with these Java APIs? How would you go about it? Would you have another separate Java process on the client that serializes / pickles objects and communicates with the PyQt process over a socket? I don't want to re-invent the wheel... is there some sort of standard interface for these types of things? Some technology I should look into? RPC, Corba, etc? Thanks, ~Eric

  • Multi-Threading - Cleanup strategy at program end

    What is the best way to finish a multi-threaded application in a clean way? I am starting several socket connections from the main thread in seperate sockets and wait until the end of my business day in the main thread and use currently System.Environment.Exit(0) to terminate it. This leads to an unhandled execption in one of the childs. Should I stop the threads from the list? I have been reluctant to implement any real stopping in the childs yet, thus I am wondering about the best practice. The sockets are all wrapped nicely with proper destructors for logging out and closing, but it still leads to errors.

  • PHPMailer, fsockopen(), possible Apache issue?

    I'm using PHPMailer to send out site contacts. In development, the script works perfectly with the GMail service over smtp. However, in production, inside the client's DMZ, it appears unable to connect to the SMTP service they have there. I have connected to the same service using telnet to port 25, so I know for sure it exists and is available to the server. Are there any circumstances where php might not be able to open a socket connection (fsockopen)...? The php extension openssl is loaded and ok. The error is "Unable to connect to SMTP service". Thanks!

    I am relatively new to world of programming. I have a few performance questions: Do console apps run faster than apps with a graphical user interface? Are languages like C and Pascal faster than object oriented languages like C++ and Delphi? I know language speed depends more on compiler than on language itself, but do compilers for procedural languages produce faster code than OO ones (including C++ compilers that can produce C code)?

  • Have minimized windows with a unique icon/color?

    Are there any programs or way to get a specific icon or any icon for that matter into a minimized window? The reason why I ask is that I hate having 3 or more windows of the same program minimized on my taskbar using the same icon. When I want to open up the program i'm not sure which window to activate. -edit I'm asking for a program to do this for me, not a programming technique

    I've installed PostgreSQL and PostGIS, and now I'm trying to follow these instructions: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/gis/install/#spatialdb-template But I keep getting the following error, both in the command prompt and in Cygwin: C:\Users\Home>createdb -E UTF8 template_postgis createdb: could not connect to database postgres: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"? And I know PostgreSQL is running, because I'm using it right now! Installing open source applications can sometimes be so frustrating... I'll be very grateful for your help!

I need to be able to extend the Eclipse Java Editor component and add coloured overlays to the code based on pluggable external metrics. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any kind of syntax highlighting extension point. Does anyone know how I might be able to extend the exisitng eclipse Java Editor to add custom highlighting rules?   • Is there a tool out there that lets you print a colour chart / palette of colours used on a web page

    I want to print a table of the colours used in a web page that my graphic designer has produced - I have .png files at present and use Fireworks to view them. It would be great if there was a tool that lets you print a table with the colour and hex value so I can easily reference when programming. Anyone come across such a thing?     I realise this is an older programming environment, but I have to clean up some VB6 code and I am finding that most of it uses: Resume Next What is the general consensus about the use of Resume Next? Surely, if there is an error, you would want the app to stop what it was doing, rollback any data changes, and inform the user of the error, rather than just resuming. When is it good idea to use Resume?

  • how to add Continue String Sign like "..." in TextView?
