• What can cause System.Move to occasionaly give wrong results?

  The last few days we have had some strange problems with our database components developed by a third party. There has been no changes to these components for months. The code that HAS changed the last few days is our own code and we have also updated our gui-components developed by another third party. After debugging I have found that a call to System.Move in one of the database component procedures occationaly gives wrong results! Please take a look at the code below from the database components and read my comments. How can this inconsistent behaviour happen? Can anyone give me an idea of how to procede to find the cause of this inconsistent behaviour? NB! I dont think there is anything wrong with THIS code, it is only shown to explain the problem "symptoms". My guess is that there is some sort of memory corruption or something, caused by our code or the updated gui-component-code. Edit: Take a look at the blogpost linked below. • Is there a "dual user check-in" source control system?

  Are there any source control systems that require another user to validate the source code "before" it can be checked-in? I want to know as this is one technique to make sure that code quality is high. Update: There has been talk of "Branches" in the answers, and while I feel branches have there place I think that branchs are something different as when a developer's code is ready to go into the main branch it "should" be checked. Most often though I see that when this happens a lead developer or whoever is responsible for the merge into the main branch/stream just puts the code into the main branch as long as it "compiles" and does no more checks than that. I want the idea of two people putting their names to the code at an early stage so that it introduces some responsibility, and also because the code is cheaper to fix early on and is also fresh in the developers mind.

• Profiling Java running by JNI calls

  Hi, I have a C++ code that upon execution: Loads JVM (I have full control on how to load the JVM), and call Java methods (from loaded classes) using C JNI code. The Java code has no Main() and it is actually not a standard Java application. it is mainly a static code that compiled and compacted into Jar file, the code is being called by the C++ module. Is it possible to profile this Java code being executed by YourKit (have license for it)? If so I'll be glad to know how. Thanks, Guy

• Why does JAXB not create a member variable in its generated code when an XML schema base type and subtype have the same element declared in them?

  I have a question regarding with regard to JAXB generated classes. As you can I see, I have a complex type, DG_PaymentIdentification1, declared in my schema. Its a restriction of PaymentIdentification1. DG_PaymentIdentification1 is also identical to PaymentIdentification1. I also have a type called DG_CreditTransferTransactionInformation10 which has a base type of CreditTransferTransactionInformation10 and is identical to it. • 2D Engine scrolling on OpenGL via hardware?

  hi, I'm using OpenGL as the bottom end for a 2D tiling engine. When everything is 2D, it is simple to optimize certain issues. For example, scrolling. If I know a certain section of the screen needs to scroll off the bottom, then I can just blit over that portion. I'm evening moving more than 1 pixel at a time. Without explicit hardware support (think old nintendo hw), this requires a lot of pixel writes. An on chip bitblt would be the next best thing. Essentially, I'm looking at how I can optimize my GL calls to use VRAM texture renders as efficient hardware blits. Is it possible to have GL scroll the framebuffer, or should I just resign myself to double-buffering and re-rendering an entire scene for each frame? Thx

  I was wondering which way would create a faster programming language, because I have tried both. Writing code that takes the text, splits it by whitespace or newlines or something, then processes each line and has a dictionary for variables. Or writing code that takes text and converts it to another programming language.   I have need to call a webservice from an HTML helper extension I created (combinbation of Action and Image) and placed in the view as follows @Html.ActionImage("CallService", new { number = ViewBag.number, code = ViewBag.code, account = ViewBag.account, amount = ViewBag.amount }, "~/Content/sb_200x61.png", "Start the Process") I am making the action call and it calls the service and returns a string of the html response, but it doesn't look right. I am using the typical HttpWebRequest to do the POST Action in C# code. Code #1: <select data-bind="options: operatingSystems, optionsText: function (item) { return item.Name }, value: selectedOperatingSystem"></select> Code #2: <script type="text/html" id="os-template-detail"> <option data-bind="text: Name" class="body-text"></option> </script> <select data-bind="value: selectedOperatingSystem, template: { name: 'os-template-detail', foreach: operatingSystems }"></select> Both shows data from json correctly. With code #1, it updates the value when I select an item on the list while code #2 does not update anything when I change the item. I am pretty new to Knockout.js and have no idea why Code #2 doesn't work. Is it the limitation of Knockout that preventing me from using template and value at the same time?

  I have 3 tables to join to get table1.code, table1.series, table2.entry_date, table3.title1 and I'm trying to get the most recent non null table3.title1 grouped by table1.code and table1.series. select table1.code, table1.series, max(table2.entry_date), table3.Title1 from table3 INNER JOIN table2 ON table3.ID = table2.ID INNER JOIN table1 ON table2.source_code = table1.code where table3.Title1 is not NULL group by table1.code, table1.series, table3.Title1 seems to give me all entries with a non null title1 instead of the most recent one. How should I structure the query to just pick the newest version of Title1 per code & series?

• c++ Sorting a vector based on values of other vector, or what's faster?

  Hi, There are a couple of other posts about sorting a vector A based on values in another vector B. Most of the other answers tell to create a struct or a class to combine the values into one object and use std::sort. Though I'm curious about the performance of such solutions as I need to optimize code which implements bubble sort to sort these two vectors. I'm thinking to use a vector<pair<int,int>> and sort that. I'm working on a blob-tracking application (image analysis) where I try to match previously tracked blobs against newly detected blobs in video frames where I check each of the frames against a couple of previously tracked frames and of course the blobs I found in previous frames. I'm doing this at 60 times per second (speed of my webcam). Any advice on optimizing this is appreciated. • why does InnoDB keep on growing without for every update?

  I have a table which consists of heavy blobs, and I wanted to conduct some tests on it. I know deleted space is not reclaimed by innodb, so I decided to reuse existing records by updating its own values instead of createing new records. But I noticed, whether I delete and insert a new entry, or I do UPDATE on existing ROW, InnoDB keeps on growing. Assuming I have 100 Rows, each Storing 500KB of information, My InnoDB size is 10MB, now when I call UPDATE on all rows (no insert/ no delete), the innodb grows by ~8MB for every run I do. All I am doing is I am storing exactly 500KB of data in each row, with little modification, and size of blob is fixed. What can I do to prevent this? I know about optimize table, but I cant do it because on regular usage, the table is going to be 60-100GB big, and running optimize will just stall entire server.

  Recently I've bumped into the following C++ code: if (a) { f(); } else if (b) { f(); } else if (c) { f(); } Where a, b and c are all different conditions, and they are not very short. I tried to change the code to: if (a || b || c) { f(); } But the author opposed saying that my change will decrease readability of the code. I had two arguments: 1) You should not increase readability by replacing one branching statement with three (though I really doubt that it's possible to make code more readable by using else if instead of ||). 2) It's not the fastest code, and no compiler will optimize this. But my arguments did not convince him. What would you tell a programmer writing such a code? Do you think complex condition is an excuse for using else if instead of OR?

  Some time ago I wrote server software which is currently running at it's max. (3k users average). So I decided to rewrite certain parts so I can run the software at another server to balance it's load. I can't simply start another instance of the server since there is some data which has to be available to all users. So I was thinking of creating a small manager and all the servers connect and send their (relevant)data to the manager. But it also got me thinking about another problem. The manager could also reach it's limits which is exactly what i'm trying to prevent in the future. So I would like to know how I could fix this problem. (I have already tried to optimize critical parts of the software but I can't optimize it forever)

• Jquery .text() seems not to work on XML in IE7

  My PHP backend sends XML response to the client (ajax): <response> <code>0</code> <message>OK</message> </response> in the javascript I'm trying to get CODE value in this way: var errorCode = $('code', xml).text(); and then depending on errorCode value I do processing. It is working fine in all browsers I tested except IE7. Instead of CODE value - it is giving me the empty string. The problem is not in 0 value, because I tried to use 5 as a code for example - the result was the same. Any ideas, because I'm stuck with :(( Thanks.

• Interpreted vs. Compiled Languages for Web Sites (PHP, ASP, Perl, Python, etc.)

  I build database-driven web sites. Previously I have used Perl or PHP with MySQL. Now I am starting a big new project, and I want to do it in the way that will result in the most responsive possible site. I have seen several pages here where questions about how to optimize PHP are criticized with various versions of "it's not worth going to great lengths to optimize PHP since it's an interpreted language and it won't make that much difference". I have also heard various discussions (especiallon on the SO podcast) about the benefits of compiled vs. interpreted languages, and it seems as though it would be in my interests to use a compiled language to serve up the site instead of an interpreted language. Is this even possible in a web context? If so, what would be a reasonable language choice? In addition to speed one benefit I forsee is the possiblity of finding bugs at compile time instead of having to debug the web site. Is this reasonable to expect?
