• Is there a more correct type for passing in the file path and file name to a method

  Hi What I mean by this question is, when you need to store or pass a URL around, using a string is probably a bad practice, and a better approach would be to use a URI type. However it is so easy to make complex things more complex and bloated. So if I am going to be writing to a file on disk, do I pass it a string, as the file name and file path, or is there a better type that will be better suited to the requirement? This code seems to be clunky, and error prone? I would also need to do a whole bit of checking if it is a valid file name, if the string contains data and the list goes on. private void SaveFile(string fileNameAndPath) { //The normal stuff to save the file }

• Why does grails use hsqldb when I ask for mysql?

  I'm following the racetrack example from Jason Rudolph's book at InfoQ, using grails-1.2.1. I got up to the part where I was to switch from hsqldb to mysql. I think I've deleted every reference to hsqldb in the DataSource.groovy file, but I get an exception and the stack trace shows it's still using hsqldb. The stdout shows I'm using development env. I've googled for solutions, but the only solution I've found is when people don't change the test or production environments.

  I am trying to understand how to assign by "reference" to a class field in c#. I have the follwing example to consider: public class X { public X() { string example = "X"; new Y( ref example ); new Z( ref example ); System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine( example ); } } public class Y { public Y( ref string example ) { example += " (Updated By Y)"; } } public class Z { private string _Example; public Z( ref string example ) { this._Example = example; this._Example += " (Updated By Z)"; } } var x = new X(); When running the above code the output is: X (Updated By Y) And not: X (Updated By Y) (Updated By Z) As I had hoped. It seems that assigning a "ref parameter" to a field loses the reference. Is there any way to keep hold of the reference when assigning to a field? Thanks.

• Which is more efficient regular expression?

  I'm parsing some big log files and have some very simple string matches for example if(m/Some String Pattern/o){ #Do something } It seems simple enough but in fact most of the matches I have could be against the start of the line, but the match would be "longer" for example if(m/^Initial static string that matches Some String Pattern/o){ #Do something } Obviously this is a longer regular expression and so more work to match. However I can use the start of line anchor which would allow an expression to be discarded as a failed match sooner. It is my hunch that the latter would be more efficient. Can any one back me up/shoot me down :-)

  Hi guys, I have started to work on a site without url rewriting. Now, the request is to use friendly urls so i started to use Intelligencia.UrlRewriter. So no longer return "~/Site/Categorii.aspx?category=m1" but "~/Site/Categorii/m1" without beeing needed to modify its structure? I mean, i have about 30 methods like the one from the above; it would be extremely helpfull if i can be guided to use a regex at the output of the methods iso modifying the url construction... • ASP.NET MVC 2 - Checkboxes

  I'm using string[] roles = Roles.GetAllRoles() to get a string[] of all the ASP.NET membership roles for my application. I'm sending the roles to my view in ViewData and using a foreach to create a set of Checkboxes using <%: Html.CheckBox("RoleCheckBox") %>. There are 3 roles and my view does render 3 checkboxes. When I do a View/Source, I see the checkboxes and their corresponding hidden tags. They all have the same, so there are 6 tags with the name "RoleCheckBox" - 3 that render the checkboxes and 3 that are hidden. The problem comes when I post the form back to my controller and bind the results - something like public ActionResult Create(Person person, string[] RoleCheckBox). I get FOUR strings and I have no idea where the fourth string ("false") is coming from. I could do some testing by trying various combinations of checks to see which one (hopefully) doesn't change and ignore it but that's just ugly. Does anyone know why this would be happening? • Php/ODBC encoding problem

  I use ODBC to connect to SQL Server from PHP. In PHP I read some string (nvarchar column) data from SQL Server and then want to insert it to mysql database. When I try to insert such value to mysql database table I get this mysql error: Incorrect string value: '\xB3\xB9ow...' for column 'name' at row 1 For string with all ASCII characters everything is fine, the problem occurs when non-ASCII characters (from some European languages) exist. So, in more general terms: there is a Unicode string in MS SQL Server database, which is retrieved by PHP trough ODBC. Then it is put in sql insert query (as value for utf-8 varchar column) which is executed for mysql database. Can someone explain to me what is happening in this situation in terms of encoding? At which step what character encoding convertions may take place? I use: PHP 5.2.5, MySQL5.0.45-community-nt, MS Sql Server 2005.

  I have the following in code to convert from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 in a jar file and when I execute this jar in Windows I get one result and in CentOS I get another.   Hi all, i need to generate the same number of text files as the xml files i have. Within the text files, i need the title and maybe some other tags of it. I can generate text files with the elements i wanted but not all xml files can be generated. Only some of them are generated. Something might be wrong with my parser so help out please thanks.   Bckground I have a networked application written in C#. my server program has a UI and several communication threads, that read from tcp sockets and display messages on controller UI. Communication with each client is done through a seprate thread. When i recieve some stream of messages from one client , the thread for that client writes on UI, which is a richtextbox on a Form. I call SetTextHelper(string text) method of the form. which looks like this private delegate void MyTextUpdateHandler(string text); public void SetTextHelper(string text) { BeginInvoke(new MyTextUpdateHandler(SetText), new object[] { text }); } public setText(string text) { richtext.Text= text; } Question - If i use BeginInvoke my UI is entirely unresponsive when i m writing large stream of data to UI - Invoke solves that problem, but i read that for multi threaded environment where many thereads are sharing same resource Invoke can lead to deadlocks I share the common ichtextbox between around 16 threads - What would be a good desing for my situation?
