  • Getting the type of an array of T, without specifying T - Type.GetType("T[]")

    - by Merlyn Morgan-Graham
    I am trying to create a type that refers to an array of a generic type, without specifying the generic type. That is, I would like to do the equivalent of Type.GetType("T[]"). I already know how to do this with a non-array type. E.g. Type.GetType("System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1") // or typeof(IEnumerable<>) Here's some sample code that reproduces the problem. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; public class Program { public static void SomeFunc<T>(IEnumerable<T> collection) { } public static void SomeArrayFunc<T>(T[] collection) { } static void Main(string[] args) { Action<Type> printType = t => Console.WriteLine(t != null ? t.ToString() : "(null)"); Action<string> printFirstParameterType = methodName => printType( typeof(Program).GetMethod(methodName).GetParameters()[0].ParameterType ); printFirstParameterType("SomeFunc"); printFirstParameterType("SomeArrayFunc"); var iEnumerableT = Type.GetType("System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1"); printType(iEnumerableT); var iEnumerableTFromTypeof = typeof(IEnumerable<>); printType(iEnumerableTFromTypeof); var arrayOfT = Type.GetType("T[]"); printType(arrayOfT); // Prints "(null)" // ... not even sure where to start for typeof(T[]) } } The output is: System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[T] T[] System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[T] System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[T] (null) I'd like to correct that last "(null)". This will be used to get an overload of a function via reflections by specifying the method signature: var someMethod = someType.GetMethod("MethodName", new[] { typeOfArrayOfT }); // ... call someMethod.MakeGenericMethod some time later I've already gotten my code mostly working by filtering the result of GetMethods(), so this is more of an exercise in knowledge and understanding.

  • LightDM will not start after stopping it

    - by Sweeters
    I am running Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot", and in trying to install the nvidia CUDA developer drivers I switched to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F5) and stopped lightdm (installation required that no X server instance be running) through sudo service lightdm stop. Re-starting lightdm with sudo service lightdm start did not work: A couple of * Starting [...] lines where displayed, but the process hanged. (I do not remember at which point, but I think it was * Starting System V runlevel compatibility. I manually rebooted my laptop, and ever since booting seems to hang, usually around the * Starting anac(h)ronistic cron [OK] log line (not consistently at that point, though). From that point on, I seem to be able to interact with my system only through a tty session (Ctrl-Alt-F1). I've tried purging and reinstalling both lightdm and gdm, as well as selecting both as the default display managers (through sudo dpkg-reconfigure [lightdm / gdm] or by manually editing /etc/X11/default-display-manager) through both apt-get and aptitude (that shouldn't make a difference anyway) after updating the packages, but the problem persists. Some of the responses I'm getting are the following: After running sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm (but not ... gdm) I get the following message: dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_NAME missing dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_PACKAGE missing After trying sudo service lightdm start or sudo start lightdm I get to see the boot loading screen again but nothing changes. If I go back to the tty shell I see lightdm start/running, process <num> but ps -e | grep lightdm gives no output. After trying sudo service gdm start or sudo starg gdm I get the gdm start/running, process <num> message, and gdm-binary is supposedly an active process, but all that happens is that the screen blinks a couple of times and nothing else. Other candidate solutions that I'd found on the web included running startx but when I try that I get an error output [...] Fatal server error: no screens found [...]. Moreover, I made sure that lightdm-gtk-greeter is installed but that did not help either. Please excuse my not including complete outputs/logs; I am writing this post from another computer and it's hard to manually copy the complete logs. Also, I've seen several posts that had to do with similar problems, but either there was no fix, or the one suggested did not work for me. In closing: Please help! I very much hope to avoid re-installing Ubuntu from scratch! :) Alex @mosi I did not manage to fix the NVIDIA kernel driver as per your instructions. I should perhaps mention that I'm on a Dell XPS15 laptop with an NVIDIA Optimus graphics card, and that I have bumblebee installed (which installs nvidia drivers during its installation, I believe). Issuing the mentioned commands I get the following: ~$uname -r 3.0.0-12-generic ~$lsmod | grep -i nvidia nvidia 11713772 0 ~$dmesg | grep -i nvidia [ 8.980041] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel. • System unable to boot in normal mode..! need to select recovery mode and than Generic Mode to boot.?

    - by Haresh Veera
    I am using Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS KDE Mode. Couple of Days back I updated the system using Muon Package manager. After Updating, now when ever I boot the system, It get stuck at starting bluetooth Daemon Ok / Stopping Bluetooth Daemon Fail.and after long wait its get start to GUI Mode, but with no mouse detection. So need to reboot by pressing CTL+ALT+DEL and when I select recovery mode - Boot in Generic -- It boot perfectly. How can I set the same as default, and remove the error boot loader script. I am no expert to linux or Kernel.

  • How to determine if two generic type values are equal?

    - by comecme
    I'm trying to figure out how I can successfully determine if two generic type values are equal to each other. Based on Mark Byers' answer on this question I would think I can just use value.Equals() where value is a generic type. My actual problem is in a LinkedList implementation, but the problem can be shown with this simpler example. class GenericOjbect<T> { public T Value { get; private set; } public GenericOjbect(T value) { Value = value; } public bool Equals(T value) { return (Value.Equals(value)); } } Now I define an instance of GenericObject<StringBuilder> containing new StringBuilder("StackOverflow"). I would expect to get true if I call Equals(new StringBuilder("StackOverflow") on this GenericObject instance, but I get false. A sample program showing this: using System; using System.Text; class Program { static void Main() { var sb1 = new StringBuilder("StackOverflow"); var sb2 = new StringBuilder("StackOverflow"); Console.WriteLine("StringBuilder compare"); Console.WriteLine("1. == " + (sb1 == sb2)); Console.WriteLine("2. Object.Equals " + (Object.Equals(sb1, sb2))); Console.WriteLine("3. this.Equals " + (sb1.Equals(sb2))); var go1 = new GenericOjbect<StringBuilder>(sb1); var go2 = new GenericOjbect<StringBuilder>(sb2); Console.WriteLine("\nGenericObject compare"); Console.WriteLine("1. == " + (go1 == go2)); Console.WriteLine("2. Object.Equals " + (Object.Equals(go1, go2))); Console.WriteLine("3. this.Equals " + (go1.Equals(go2))); Console.WriteLine("4. Value.Equals " + (go1.Value.Equals(go2.Value))); } } For the three methods of comparing two StringBuilder objects, only the StringBuilder.Equals instance method (the third line) returns true. This is what I expected. But when comparing the GenericObject objects, its Equals() method (the third line) returns false. Interestingly enough, the fourth compare method does return true. I'd think the third and fourth comparison are actually doing the same thing. I would have expected true. Because in the Equals() method of the GenericObject class, both value and Value are of type T which in this case is a StringBuilder. Based on Mark Byers' answer in this question, I would've expected the Value.Equals() method to be using the StringBuilder's Equals() method. And as I've shown, the StringBuilder's Equal() method does return true. I've even tried public bool Equals(T value) { return EqualityComparer<T>.Default.Equals(Value, value); } but that also returns false. So, two questions here: Why doesn't the code return true? How could I implement the Equals method so it does return true?

  • If I use a facade class with generic methods to access the JPA API, how should I provide additional processing for specific types?

    - by Shaun
    Let's say I'm making a fairly simple web application using JAVA EE specs (I've heard this is possible). In this app, I only have about 10 domain/data objects, and these are represented by JPA Entities. Architecturally, I would consider the JPA API to perform the role of a DAO. Of course, I don't want to use the EntityManager directly in my UI (JSF) and I need to manage transactions, so I delegate these tasks to the so-called service layer. More specifically, I would like to be able to handle these tasks in a single DataService class (often also called CrudService) with generic methods. See this article by Adam Bien for an example interface: http://www.adam-bien.com/roller/abien/entry/generic_crud_service_aka_dao My project differs from that article in that I can't use EJBs, so my service classes are essentially just named beans and I handle transactions manually. Regardless, what I want is a single interface for simple CRUD operations on my data objects because having a different class for each data type would lead to a lot of duplicate and/or unnecessary code. Ideally, my views would be able to use a method such as public <T> List<T> findAll(Class<T> type) { ... } to retrieve data. Using JSF, it might look something like this: <h:dataTable value="#{dataService.findAll(data.class)}" var="d"> ... </h:dataTable> Similarly, after validating forms, my controller could submit the data with a method such as: public <T> void add(T entity) { ... } Granted, you'd probably actually want to return something useful to the caller. In any case, this works well if your data can be treated as homogenous in this manner. Alas, it breaks down when you need to perform additional processing on certain objects before passing them on to JPA. For example, let's say I'm dealing with Books and Authors which have a many-to-many relationship. Each Book has a set of IDs referring to its authors, and each Author has a set of IDs referring to their books. Normally, JPA can manage this kind of relationship for you, but in some cases it can't (for example, the google app engine JPA provider doesn't support this). Thus, when I persist a new book for example, I may need to update the corresponding author entities. My question, then, is if there's an elegant way to handle this or if I should reconsider the sanity of my whole design. Here's a couple ways I see of dealing with it: The instanceof operator. I could use this to target certain classes when special processing is needed. Perhaps maintainability suffers and it isn't beautiful code, but if there's only 10 or so domain objects it can't be all that bad... could it? Make a different service for each entity type (ie, BookService and AuthorService). All services would inherit from a generic DataService base class and override methods if special processing is needed. At this point, you could probably also just call them DAOs instead. As always, I appreciate the help. Let me know if any clarifications are needed, as I left out many smaller details.

  • C# generic list <T> how to get the type of T?

    - by Daok
    Hello, Let say I have a List< T > abc = new List< T >; inside a class public class MyClass<T>//.... Later, when I initialize the class the T because MyTypeObject1. So I have a generic list of List< MyTypeObject1 >. I would like to know, what type of object the list of my class contain. Example, the list called abc contain what type of object? I cannot do abc[0].GetType(); because the list might contain 0 element. How can I do it?

  • Generic structure for performing string conversion when data binding.

    - by Rohan West
    Hi there, a little while ago i was reading an article about a series of class that were created that handled the conversion of strings into a generic type. Below is a mock class structure. Basically if you set the StringValue it will perform some conversion into type T public class MyClass<T> { public string StringValue {get;set;} public T Value {get;set;} } I cannot remember the article that i was reading, or the name of the class i was reading about. Is this already implemented in the framework? Or shall i create my own?

  • C# and MySQL .NET Connector - Any way of preventing SQL Injection attacks in a generic class?

    - by John M
    My idea is to create some generic classes for Insert/Update/Select via a C# (3.5) Winforms app talking with a MySQL database via MySQL .NET Connector 6.2.2. For example: public void Insert(string strSQL) { if (this.OpenConnection() == true) { MySqlCommand cmd = new MySqlCommand(strSQL, connection); cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); this.CloseConnection(); } } Then from anywhere in the program I can run a query with/without user input by just passing a SQL query string. Reading around on SO is starting to give me the indication that this may lead to SQL injection attacks (for any user-input values). Is there anyway of scrubbing the inputted strSQL or do I need to go and create individual parameterized queries in every method that needs to do a database function?

  • Casting to generic type in Java doesn't raise ClassCastException?

    - by Kip
    I have come across a strange behavior of Java that seems like a bug. Is it? Casting an Object to a generic type (say, K) does not throw a ClassCastException even if the object is not an instance of K. Here is an example: import java.util.*; public final class Test { private static<K,V> void addToMap(Map<K,V> map, Object ... vals) { for(int i = 0; i < vals.length; i += 2) map.put((K)vals[i], (V)vals[i+1]); //Never throws ClassCastException! } public static void main(String[] args) { Map<String,Integer> m = new HashMap<String,Integer>(); addToMap(m, "hello", "world"); //No exception System.out.println(m.get("hello")); //Prints "world", which is NOT an Integer!! } }

  • How do I improve the efficiency of the queries executed by this generic Linq-to-SQL data access clas

    - by Lee D
    Hi all, I have a class which provides generic access to LINQ to SQL entities, for example: class LinqProvider<T> //where T is a L2S entity class { DataContext context; public virtual IEnumerable<T> GetAll() { return context.GetTable<T>(); } public virtual T Single(Func<T, bool> condition) { return context.GetTable<T>().SingleOrDefault(condition); } } From the front end, both of these methods appear to work as you would expect. However, when I run a trace in SQL profiler, the Single method is executing what amounts to a SELECT * FROM [Table], and then returning the single entity that meets the given condition. Obviously this is inefficient, and is being caused by GetTable() returning all rows. My question is, how do I get the query executed by the Single() method to take the form SELECT * FROM [Table] WHERE [condition], rather than selecting all rows then filtering out all but one? Is it possible in this context? Any help appreciated, Lee

  • What should I name my files with generic class definitions?

    - by Tomas Lycken
    I'm writing a couple of classes that all have generic type arguments, but I need to overload the classes because I need a different number of arguments in different scenarios. Basically, I have public class MyGenericClass<T> { ... } public class MyGenericClass<T, K> { ... } public class MyGenericClass<T, K, L> { ... } // it could go on forever, but it won't... I want them all in the same namespace, but in one source file per class. What should I name the files? Is there a best practice?

  • Django: way to test what class a generic relation content_object is?

    - by bitbutter
    In my project I have a class, NewsItem. Instances of NewsItem act like a wrapper. They can be associated with either an ArtWork instance, or an Announcement instance. Here's how the NewsItem model looks: class NewsItem(models.Model): content_type = models.ForeignKey(ContentType) object_id = models.PositiveIntegerField() content_object = generic.GenericForeignKey('content_type', 'object_id') date = models.DateTimeField(default=datetime.datetime.now,) class Meta: ordering = ('-date',) def __unicode__(self): return (self.title()) In a template I'm dealing with a NewsItem instance, and would like to output a certain bunch of html it it's 'wrapping' an Artwork instance, and a different bunch of html if it's wrapping an Announcement instance. Could someone explain how I can write a conditional to test for this? My first naive try looked like this: {% if news_item.content_object.type=='Artwork' %}do this{% else %}do that{% endif %}

  • Insert into a generic dictionary with possibility of duplicate keys?

    - by Chris Clark
    Is there any reason to favor one of these approaches over the other when inserting into a generic dictionary with the possibility of a key conflict? I'm building an in-memory version of a static collection so in the case of a conflict it doesn't matter whether the old or new value is used. If Not mySettings.ContainsKey(key) Then mySettings.Add(key, Value) End If Versus mySettings(key) = Value And then of course there is this, which is obviously not the right approach: Try mySettings.Add(key, Value) Catch End Try Clearly the big difference here is that the first and second approaches actually do different things, but in my case it doesn't matter. It seems that the second approach is cleaner, but I'm curious if any of you .net gurus have any deeper insight. Thanks!

  • Best way to test if a generic type is a string? (c#)

    - by Rex M
    I have a generic class that should allow any type, primitive or otherwise. The only problem with this is using default(T). When you call default on a value type or a string, it initializes it to a reasonable value (such as empty string). When you call default(T) on an object, it returns null. For various reasons we need to ensure that if it is not a primitive type, then we will have a default instance of the type, not null. Here is attempt 1: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType) { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } Problem - string is not a value type, but it does not have a parameterless constructor. So, the current solution is: T createDefault() { if(typeof(T).IsValueType || typeof(T).FullName == "System.String") { return default(T); } else { return Activator.CreateInstance<T>(); } } But this feels like a kludge. Is there a nicer way to handle the string case?

Suppose this code: interface IMyInterface<T> { T MyProperty { get; set; } } class MyClass : IMyInterface<int> { #region IMyInterface<T> Members public int MyProperty { get; set; } #endregion } MyClass myClass = new MyClass(); /* returns the interface */ Type[] myinterfaces = myClass.GetType().GetInterfaces(); /* returns null */ Type myinterface = myClass.GetType().GetInterface(typeof(IMyInterface<int>).FullName);

  • Best practices about creating a generic object dictionary in C#? Is this bad?

    - by JimDaniel
    For clarity I am using C# 3.5/Asp.Net MVC 2 Here is what I have done: I wanted the ability to add/remove functionality to an object at run-time. So I simply added a generic object dictionary to my class like this: public Dictionary<int, object> Components { get; set; } Then I can add/remove any kind of .Net object into this dictionary at run-time. To insert an object I do something like this: var tag = new Tag(); myObject.Components.Add((int)Types.Components.Tag, tag); Then to retrieve I just do this: if(myObject.Components.ContainsKey((int)Types.Components.Tag)) { var tag = myObject.Components[(int)Types.Components.Tag] as Tag; if(tag != null) { //do stuff } } Somehow I feel sneaky doing this. It works okay, but I am wondering what you guys think about it as a best practice. Thanks for your input, Daniel

  • What is a great resource for learning about the implementation details of .NET generic collections?

    - by Jimmy W
    Hi all, I'm interested in understanding the underlying implementation details of generic collections in .NET. What I have in mind are details such as how the collections are stored, how each member of a collection is accessed by the CLR, etc. For collections that are analogous to traditional data structures, such as LinkedList and Dictionary, I think I have an understanding of what's going on underneath. However, I'm not as certain about collections like List (how is set up such that it is both indexable and expandable?) and SortedList, so any leads as to what I could look up to learn more about them would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to convert value of Generic Type Argument to a concrete type?

    - by Aleksey Bieneman
    I am trying to convert the value of the generic type parameter T value into integer after making sure that T is in fact integer: public class Test { void DoSomething<T>(T value) { var type = typeof(T); if (type == typeof(int)) { int x = (int)value; // Error 167 Cannot convert type 'T' to 'int' int y = (int)(object)value; // works though boxing and unboxing } } } Although it works through boxing and unboxing, this is an additional performance overhead and i was wandering if there's a way to do it directly. Thank you!

  • How can i sort DESC and ASC in list generic?

    - by Phsika
    How can I sort DESC and ASC in a generic list? With LINQ and without LINQ ? I'm using vs 2008. class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { List<int> li = new List<int>(); li.Add(456); li.Add(123); li.Add(12345667); li.Add(0); li.Add(1); li.Sort(); foreach (int item in li) { Console.WriteLine(item.ToString()+"\n"); } Console.ReadKey(); } }

  • is this possible: c# collection of Type with constrains, or collection of generic type?

    - by Jon
    I'm trying to store types in a collection, so that i can later instantiate objects of the types in the collection. But I'm not sure how to do this the best way. What i have so far: List<Type> list = new List<Type>(); list.Add(typeof(MyClass)); var obj = (MyClass)Activator.CreateInstance(list[0]); I would like to have some constrains on the Type, or better yet, just a generic type in the collection instead of an instantiated Type object. Is this possible?

  • Java generic function for performing calculations on integer, on double?

    - by Daniel
    Is this possible? Surely if you passed in a double, any sort of function implementation code which casts an object to an Integer would not be able to work unless the cast 'Integer' was specifically used? I have a function like: public static void increment(Object o){ Integer one = (Integer)o; system.out.println(one++); } I cant see how this could be made generic for a double? I tried public static <E> void increment(E obj){ E one = (E)o; system.out.println(one++); } but it didn't like it?

  • Generic type parameter naming convention for Java (with multiple chars)?

    - by chaper29
    In some interfaces i wrote I'd like to name generic type parameter with more than one character to make the code more readable. Something like.... Map<Key,Value> Instead of this... Map<K,V> But when it comes to methods, the type-parameters look like java-classes which is also confusing. public void put(Key key, Value value) This seems like Key and Value are classes. I found or thought of some notations, but nothing like a convention from sun or a general best-practice. Alternatives i guesed of or found... Map<KEY,VALUE> Map<TKey,TValue>

  • Are static members of a generic class tied to the specific instance?

    - by mafutrct
    This is more of a documentation than a real question. I noticed the principle it is not described on SO yet (did I miss it?), so here goes: Imagine a generic class that contains a static member: class Foo<T> { public static int member; } Is there a new instance of the member for each specific class, or is there only a single instance for all Foo-type classes? It can easily be verified by code like this: Foo<int>.member = 1; Foo<string>.member = 2; Console.WriteLine (Foo<int>.member); What is the result, and where is this behavior documented?

  • Sendmail + m4 - problem converting mc files into cf

    - by zbigh
    Hi I'm currently trying to configure sendmail fo the first time and setup a mail server on a small embedded computer ( running a custom linux distribution ). I'm having an issue with the m4 macros: I'm trying to convert this: VERSIONID(`$Id: generic-linux.mc,v 8.1 1999/09/24 22:48:05 gshapiro Exp $') OSTYPE(linux)dnl DOMAIN(generic)dnl define(HELPFILE, `/etc/mail/helpfile') FEATURE(nouucp, `noscpecial') MAILER(local)dnl MAILER(smtp)dnl to sendmail.cf, but all the output I get when running m4 is: VERSIONID($Id: generic-linux.mc,v 8.1 1999/09/24 22:48:05 gshapiro Exp $) OSTYPE(linux)DOMAIN(generic) FEATURE(nouucp, noscpecial) MAILER(local)MAILER(smtp) Am I doing something wrong?
