• Create Custom Speech Bubbles in Silverlight.

  I had a reader email me the following question: “How do you create Speech Bubbles in Silverlight/WPF without adding any extra .dlls? Right off the bat, I know at least two ways to create the speech bubbles that look just like the ones in comic books. Using the Callout Shapes included with Blend 4. Using the free 3rd party control named FreeBubbles (I used this before Blend 4). Unfortunately, we cannot use either of these as they will both add extra .dll’s to the project. So why wouldn’t you want to use one of those? I can think of a few reasons: You do not want to increase the size of your .XAP by including extra .dll’s. You do not have Expression Blend or the license to the use the .dll’s. You want a custom Speech Bubble that is not included in the four “Callout” Controls with Blend. Instead of using one of these methods, we will create a Speech Bubble in Blend 4 using Path element and a TextBlock. Before we get started, lets look at the Callout Shapes included with Blend 4. Using Blend 4 you can simply drag/drop these controls onto your Silverlight application and you are ready to go. We can create all of these Speech Bubbles and even some of the modern bubbles used in recent comic books. Lets get started. Start up Expression Blend 4 and select the Pen Tool. On the Art Board, start connecting the dots like I did below. You can add a color if you wish. …keep going …complete Let’s go ahead and add some text to the Speech Bubble. Drag a TextBlock from the Panel and put it directly inside the Speech Bubble. Go ahead and set the TextAlignment to Center for the TextBlock. and give it some text. At this point, you could go ahead and create a user control if you want to reuse the Speech Bubble you created. Select both the Path and the TextBlock by clicking then while holding down CTRL and then Right Click them. Select Make Into User Control. Give it a name and then Build your project. Lets create another one using the Ellipse for the older comic book style of Speech Bubbles. Drag an Ellipse to the Artboard and give it a color. Now, grab the Pen and drag a triangle like I did below. Simply drag it over a corner of the Ellipse. Select Combine then Unite and you will have a Path. At this point, you can go ahead and add a TextBlock like we did earlier. Lets go ahead and create a rounded rectangle one by adding a Rectangle to the Artboard. Go ahead and set the RadiuX and RadiusY to 25 to give it rounded edges. Let’s create another path and drag it right on top of our rounded rectangle like we did earlier. …looking good Select Combine then Unite and you will have a Path. At this point, you can go ahead and add a TextBlock like we did earlier. So let’s look at what we’ve created today using the path element and TextBlock. • jqGrid (Delete row) - How to send additional POST data???

  Hi experts, I'm having problem with jqGrid delete mechanism as it only send "oper" and "id" parameters in form of POST data (id is the primary key of the table). The problem is, I need to delete a row based on the id and another column value, let's say user_id. How to add this user_id to the POST data??? I can summarize the issue as the following: How to get the cell value (user_id) of the selected row? AND, how to add that user_id to the POST data so it can be retrieved from the code behind where the actual delete process takes place. • Visual Studio 2008 doesn't create *.refresh files for external DLL references... what am I missing?

  Hi all-- I've got a question about something that's just been irritating me. A colleague and I are building a support framework for our current client that we want to reference in other projects. The DLL we want as a reference in our project would be an external reference. We're adding it by doing "Add Reference...", then browsing to the location of the .dll. What I want Visual Studio to do is only add the .xml, .pdb, and a .dll.refresh file, but instead it copies the actual .dll (and .xml and .pdb) into the bin. When we rebuild the framework project, the other project that uses its .dll gets all out of whack until we drop and re-add the reference. Everything I've read online says that VS2008 is supposed to create the .dll.refresh files for you, but it never does. Any ideas? Am I missing something or doing something wrong? At this point I'm ready to add a pre-build event to simply copy the framework .dll into my bin, but the .refresh file seems like less of a hassle if it would just work. Thanks, Cory

• What is Causing This Memory Leak in Delphi?

  I just can't figure out this memory leak that EurekaLog is reporting for my program. I'm using Delphi 2009. Here it is: Memory Leak: Type=Data; Total size=26; Count=1; The stack is: System.pas _UStrSetLength 17477 System.pas _UStrCat 17572 Process.pas InputGedcomFile 1145 That is all there is in the stack. EurekaLog is pointing me to the location where the memory that was not released was first allocated. According to it, the line in my program is line 1145 of InputGedcomFile. That line is: CurStruct0Key := 'HEAD' + Level0Key; where CurStruct0Key and Level0Key are simply defined in the procedure as local variables that should be dynamically handled by the Delphi memory manager when entering and leaving the procedure: var CurStruct0Key, Level0Key: string; So now I look at the _UStrCat procedure in the System Unit. Surely a simple concatenate of a string constant to a local string variable should not be causing a memory leak. Why is EurekaLog pointing me to the ReallocMem line in a _UStrSetLength routine that is part of Delphi? This is Delphi 2009 and I am using the new unicode strings. Any help or explanation here will be much appreciated.

• How to test Rails 3 Engines with Cucumber & Rspec?

  I apologize if this question is slightly subjective... I am trying to figure out the best way to test Rails 3 Engines with Cucumber & Rspec. In order to test the engine a rails 3 app is necessary. Here is what I am currently doing: Add a rails test app to the root of the gem (myengine) by running: rails new /myengine/rails_app Add Cucumber to /myengine/rails_app/features as you would in a normal Rails app Require the Rails Engine Gem (using :path=>"/myengine") in /myengine/rails_app/Gemfile Add spec to the root directory of the gem: /myengine/spec Include the fixtures in /myengine/spec/fixtures and I add the following to my cuc env.rb: env.rb: Fixtures.reset_cache fixtures_folder = File.join(Rails.root, 'spec', 'fixtures') fixtures = Dir[File.join(fixtures_folder, '*.yml')].map {|f| File.basename(f, '.yml') } Fixtures.create_fixtures(fixtures_folder, fixtures) Do you see any problems with setting it up like this? The tests run fine, but I am a bit hesitant to put the features inside the test rails app. I originally tried putting the features in the root of the gem and I created the test rails app inside features/support, but for some reason my engine would not initialize when I ran the tests, even though I could see the app loading everything else when cuc ran. If anyone is working with Rails Engines and is using cuc and rspec for testing, I would be interested to hear your setup.

  Any suggestions would be great. I've inherited a system and have been requested to add a context menu item to allow the ability to add a new item. I've set up the context menu with the new option and the newform.aspx to accept and pull parameters from the url for populating some fields. The context menu was created with the content editor web part and the follow JavaScript. function Custom_AddDocLibMenuItems(m, ctx) { var strAction = "window.location='http://address?para1=....'"; var strDisplayText = "Taxonomy"; var strImagePath = ""; // Add our new menu item CAMOpt(m, strDisplayText, strAction, strImagePath); // add a separator to the menu CAMSep(m); // false means that the standard menu items should also be rendered return false; } I'm having difficulties getting the proper values in order to concatenate them to the strAction string (which would be the full url of the newform.aspx. Any suggestions on how I retrieve the values of the columns for the item that the user right click to get context menu.

  Hi, I am setting the dynamic xaml (I am reading the xaml from the DB) for the content of a tab using the below statement. Tab.Content = XamlReader.Parse(xaml, ctx) After setting the content, if I try getting the children using the VisualTreeHelper, but I am not able to get.   I am using SmartGWT and I have a ListGrid populated with an array of ListGridRecords using the setData() call. I am trying to update a progress property of a single record (on a timer for testing) and have it update in the browser. I have tried various combinations of draw(), redraw(), markForRedraw() etc. to no avail. I also tried overriding the updateRecordComponent() method in my table class, but it only gets called when the records are first created (after createRecordComponent()). I should note that I do NOT want to accomplish this by binding to a DataSource. I just want to be able to update the attribute on the client-side.   I have an Entity Framework data model. Part of the model is a Customer entity. The web service provides a method to get a customer, and to receive an updated version of this customer to be persisted. To test this, I created a new ASP.NET web Application, (Solution Add New Project ASP.NET Web Application), then added a reference to my service reference using the standard Add Service Reference dialog. From what I've read online and in the Language Patterns book, I should be able to modify the grammar like this: assignment : IDENT ':=' expr ';' -> ^(':=' IDENT expr) ; expr : factor ('*' factor)* -> ^('*' factor+) ; factor : primary ('+' primary)* -> ^('+' primary+) ; primary : NUM | '(' expr ')' -> ^(expr) ; But it does not work. Although it compiles fine, when I run the parser I get a RewriteEmptyStreamException error. Here's where things get weird. I would like to be able to scroll that Panel so I can scroll through the FormPanels. So far, nothing I've found from searches has helped. • Single player 'pong' game

  I am just starting out learning pygame and livewires, and I'm trying to make a single-player pong game, where you just hit the ball, and it bounces around until it passes your paddle (located on the left side of the screen and controlled by the mouse), which makes you lose. I have the basic code, but the ball doesn't stay on the screen, it just flickers and doesn't remain constant. Also, the paddle does not move with the mouse. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but I just can't figure it out. Help please!   I'm using Crystal Reports in a Webform inside of an MVC application. Images in the reports are not being displayed, however, on both the ASP.NET Development Server and IIS 7 (on Win7x64). I know from a number of other questions similar to this that the CrystalImageHandler HTTP Handler is responsible for rendering the image, but I've tried all of the usual solutions to no avail. • How to create a UIScrollView Programmatically?

  Alright, so the key here is I'm not using IB at all, because the View I'm working with is created programmatically. The UIView covers the lower half the screen, and has a bunch of buttons on it. However, I want to add more buttons to the UIView, without making it any larger. To do so, I want to make a UIScrollView inside the view, which will allow me to add more buttons off screen so the user can scroll to them. I think that's how it works. self.manaView = [[[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:frame] autorelease]; self.manaView.backgroundColor = [UIColor purpleColor]; UIScrollView *scroll = [UIScrollView alloc]; scroll.contentSize = CGSizeMake(320, 400); scroll.showsHorizontalScrollIndicator = YES; [self.manaView addSubview:scroll]; The first part of the code iniates my UIView, which works great, but I can't figure out how to make the UIScrollView programmatically and add it to the view, and then add the buttons to it. • problems with scrolling a java TextArea

  All, I am running into an issue using JTextArea and JScrollPane. For some reason the scroll pane appears to not recognize the last line in the document, and will only scroll down to the line before it. The scroll bar does not even change to a state where I can slide it until the lines in the document are two greater than the number of lines the textArea shows (it should happen as soon as it is one greater). Has anyone run into this before? What would be a good solution (I want to avoid having to add an extra 'blank' line to the end of the document, which I would have to remove every time I add a new line)? Here is how I instantiate the TextArea and ScrollPane: JFrame frame = new JFrame("Java Chat Program"); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); Container pane = frame.getContentPane(); if (!(pane.getLayout() instanceof BorderLayout)) { System.err.println("Error: UI Container does not implement BorderLayout."); System.exit(-1); } textArea = new JTextArea(); textArea.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(500, 100)); textArea.setEditable(false); textArea.setLineWrap(true); textArea.setWrapStyleWord(true); JScrollPane scroller = new JScrollPane(textArea); scroller.setVerticalScrollBarPolicy(ScrollPaneConstants.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS); pane.add(scroller, BorderLayout.CENTER); Here is the method I use to add a new line to textArea: public void println(String a) { textArea.append(" "+a+"\n"); textArea.setCaretPosition(textArea.getDocument().getLength()); } Thanks for your help, Jonathan EDIT: Also, as a side note, with the current code I have to manually scroll down. I assumed that setCaretPosition(doc.getLength()) in the println(line) method would automatically set the page to the bottom after a line is entered... Should that be the case, or do I need to do something differently?

• Run WCF ServiceHost with multiple contracts

  Running a ServiceHost with a single contract is working fine like this: servicehost = new ServiceHost(typeof(MyService1)); servicehost.AddServiceEndpoint(typeof(IMyService1), new NetTcpBinding(), "net.tcp://127.0.0.1:800/MyApp/MyService1"); servicehost.Open(); Now I'd like to add a second (3rd, 4th, ...) contract. My first guess would be to just add more endpoints like this: servicehost = new ServiceHost(typeof(MyService1)); servicehost.AddServiceEndpoint(typeof(IMyService1), new NetTcpBinding(), "net.tcp://127.0.0.1:800/MyApp/MyService1"); servicehost.AddServiceEndpoint(typeof(IMyService2), new NetTcpBinding(), "net.tcp://127.0.0.1:800/MyApp/MyService2"); servicehost.Open(); But of course this does not work, since in the creation of ServiceHost I can either pass MyService1 as parameter or MyService2 - so I can add a lot of endpoints to my service, but all have to use the same contract, since I only can provide one implementation? I got the feeling I'm missing the point, here. Sure there must be some way to provide an implementation for every endpoint-contract I add, or not?

• ICollectionView.SortDescriptions sort does not work if underlying DataTable has zero rows

  We have a WPF app that has a DataGrid inside a ListView. private DataTable table_; We do a bunch or dynamic column generation ( depending on the report we are showing ) We then do the a query and fill the DataTable row by row, this query may or may not have data.( not the problem, an empty grid is expected ) We set the ListView's ItemsSource to the DefaultView of the DataTable. lv.ItemsSource = table_.DefaultView; We then (looking at the user's pass usage of the app, set the sort on the column) Sort Method below: private void Sort(string sortBy, ListSortDirection direction) { ICollectionView dataView = CollectionViewSource.GetDefaultView(lv.ItemsSource); dataView.SortDescriptions.Clear(); var sd = new SortDescription(sortBy, direction); dataView.SortDescriptions.Add(sd); dataView.Refresh(); } In the Zero DataTable rows scenario, the sort does not "hold"? and if we dynamically add rows they will not be in sorted order. If the DataTable has at-least 1 row when the sort is applied, and we dynamically add rows to the DataTable, the rows com in sorted correctly. I have built a standalone app that replicate this... It is an annoyance and I can add a check to see if the DataTable was empty, and re-apply the sort... Anyone know whats going on here, and am I doing something wrong? But the problem is, when I change in the paragraph (1) from (click) to (click) everything fails, the image is not recognized and is threated as a attachment ! I think that is caused by the first colon here background-image:cid:companylogo Is it possible to resolve that ?

Once this message comes a popup will be displayed. Attempt: my $ui = new Curses::UI(-color_support=1,-clear_on_exit=1,-intellidraw=1); my $window = $ui-add('window', 'Window',intellidraw=1); my $message = $window-add(-text="Hello!",-intellidraw=1); pseudocode while(true) #implemented a function to wait { popup($window-text("Hello how are you?")); } $window-focus(); $ui-mainloop(); Problem: The above does not work. I am given a dark screen where my message is displayed. I have read the documentation and when I relocate : $ui-mainloop() above the while loop I am given the user interface but now nothing communicates to the window. Coincise Question: I need some way of displaying the user interface wait for inputs and display messages. Could anyone please help me on this? Thank you!
