• How to create 2 different scripts for 2 browsers (IE+all the rest)

  I'm trying to solve an IE CSS issue by using conditional tags. My jQuery that does the job of tabbed box effect calls an id that is inside the conditional tags. I've given new ids to IE so on IE the jQuery is not working. I tried to duplicate the script with the new id in one of the script but the 2 scripts seems to get in conflict. • Javascript Onclicks not working?

  I have a jQuery application which finds a specific div, and edit's its inner HTML. As it does this, it adds several divs with onclicks designed to call a function in my JS. For some strange reason, clicking on these never works if I have a function defined in my code set to activate. However, it works fine when calling "alert("Testing");". I am quite bewildered at this as I have in the past been able to make code-generated onclicks work just fine. The only thing new here is jQuery.

• Client-side or server-side processing?

  So, I'm new to dynamic web design (my sites have been mostly static with some PHP), and I'm trying to learn the latest technologies in web development (which seems to be AJAX), and I was wondering, if you're transferring a lot of data, is it better to construct the page on the server and "push" it to the user, or is it better to "pull" the data needed and create the HTML around it on the clientside using JavaScript? More specifically, I'm using CodeIgniter as my PHP framework, and jQuery for JavaScript, and if I wanted to display a table of data to the user (dynamically), would it be better to format the HTML using CodeIgniter (create the tables, add CSS classes to elements, etc..), or would it be better to just serve the raw data using JSON and then build it into a table with jQuery? My intuition says to do it clientside, as it would save bandwidth and the page would probably load quicker with the new JavaScript optimizations all these browsers have now, however, then the site would break for someone not using JavaScript... • IE Problem: Jagged Scrolling and Dragging Inside Large Viewport

• What to use to create bar, line and pie charts with javascript compatible with all major browsers?

  I used to work with flot but it doesn't support pie charts so I'm forced to change. I just saw JS Charts, but their documentation is very obscure regarding cross browser compatibility (I need it to be IE6+ compliant :). Also this will be for commercial use, so I'd rather have something that I can use free of charge jQuery Google chart looks really nice and is well integrated with rails (the framework I'm using) but I'm not sure how good it is. So what do you guys use? What would you recommend keeping in mind that: It will be for commercial use (I can deal with a license, but I'd rather avoid that) It needs to be javascript (no svg, no flash please) It needs to be compatible with IE6+, FF, Chrome, Opera and Safari It needs to be pretty ^^ If it uses jQuery it's even better

• Get scrollheight cross-browser through Selenium

  Hi, I'm working on a project which is using Selenium and I'd like to try to get the full web page height cross-browser and cross-platform. IE8 is being stubborn as always, is there anybody who has an idea of how to solve this? The problem: When you scroll down a page for e.g. 500px and you keep doing this until the bottom of the page, the last scroll will be less than 500px. I need to know how much this last scroll was. Two ways of solving: 1) Find the offset that has been scrolled each time (works everywhere except IE8) 2) Find the total height of the webpage I know JQuery's height() function does this but I can't use this function from Selenium RC. If you know a way of calling JQuery functions through Selenium or any other solution, please tell! Cheers, Henry

• Is it dangerous to store user-enterable text into a hidden form via javascript?

  In my asp.net MVC application I am using in place editors to allow users to edit fields without having a standard form view. Unfortunately, since I am using Linq to Sql combined with my data mapping layer I cannot just update one field at a time and instead need to send all fields over at once. So the solution I came up with was to store all my model fields into hidden fields, and provide span tags that contain the visible data (these span tags become editable due to my jquery plugin). When a user triggers a save of their edits of a field, jquery then takes their value and places it in the hidden form, and sends the whole form to the server to commit via ajax. When the data goes into the hidden field originally (page load) and into the span tags the data is properly encoded, but upon the user changing the data in the contenteditable span field, I just run $("#hiddenfield").val($("#spanfield").html(); Am I opening any holes this method? Obviously the server also properly encodes stuff prior to database entry.

I have a button in the parent document that says "Delete selected", and I'd like to be able to click this button and populate a hidden field in my parent page with the values of the selected checkboxes in the child iframe. My checkboxes look like this: <input id="Checkbox1" type="checkbox" value="47" title="Select this row" name="selectItem"/> I have an instance of jquery on my parent page so I can make use of jquery selectors, I just have no clue as to the syntax needed to do this. • How to find what ActiveX control is referred on a web page?

  I have developed a web application (ASP.NET Web Forms). One of my customer has very restrictive policies. When he accesses the web page, IE shows this message: Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. As far as I know, we don't use ActiveX controls on our page. I did a "View Souce" and did not find anything suspect. How can I find what part of my page refers to an ActiveX. The application uses jQuery and a few jQuery plug-ins. Is there a tool/add-in like "Fire Bug" that I can use to list the ActiveX controls referred on a page?

• nivo slider and drop down menu doesnt work in IE

• What's the best way to apply a drop shadow?

  What is the best method for applying drop shadows? I'm working on a site right now where we have a good deal of them, however, I've been fighting to find the best method to do it. The site is pretty animation heavy so shadows need to work well with this. I tried a jQuery shadow pulgin. The shadows looked good and were easy to use but were slow and didn't work well with any animations (required lots of redrawing, very joggy). I also tried creating my own jQuery extension that wraps my element in a couple gray divs and then offsets them a little bit to give a shadow effect. This worked well. It's quick and responsive to the animation. However, it makes DOM manipulation/traversal cumbersome since everything is wrapped in these shadow divs. I know there has to be a better way but this isn't exactly my forte. Thoughts?

• AJAX CascadingDropdown - Setting the selected index

  I have a CascadingDropDown on an ASP.NET page. Now, the prompt text is "Select State". (list of states). However, on a different version of this page (ie querystring), i might want to set the selected index to "California" for example. How can i do this? The web service used by the ajax control (ie GetStates) gets invoked at the same time the jquery document.ready function is triggered (ie asynchronously). So when i try and set the selected index in jquery, the items are not yet bound. Is there a way to attach a handler to the ajax dropdown so that i can set the selected index once the webservice call has completed, and the items are bound?

I'd like to convert it to css and use jQuery to expand/collapse specific sections. I've seen some jQuery libraries, the menu.js in particular. And they appear to all use list items for the markup.   Different pages of my site have different js needs (plugins mainly), some need a lightbox, some dont, some need a carousel, some dont etc. With regards to pageloading speed should i option 1 - reference each js file when it is needed: so one page might have: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery.easydrag.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/colorbox/jquery.colorbox-min.js"></script> and another have: <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/typewatch.js"></script> option 2 - combine and compress into one site_wide.js file: so each page would reference: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/site_wide.js"></script> there would be unused selectors/event listeners though, how bad is this? I would include any plugin notes/accreditations at the top of the site_wide.js file

Declaring a function within another function, and that inner function has access to its parent function's variables, even after that parent function has returned.
