  • Regex to extract portions of file name

    I have text files formatted as such: R156484COMP_004A7001_20100104_065119.txt I need to consistently extract the R****COMP, the 004A7001 number, 20100104 (date), and don't care about the 065119 number. the problem is that not ALL of the files being parsed have the exact naming convention. some may be like this: R168166CRIT_156B2075_SU2_20091223_123456.txt or R285476COMP_SU1_125A6025_20100407_123456.txt So how could I use regex instead of split to ensure I am always getting that serial (ex. 004A7001), the date (ex. 20100104), and the R****COMP (or CRIT)???   • Idiomatic Scala way to deal with base vs derived class field names?

    Consider the following base and derived classes in Scala: abstract class Base( val x : String ) final class Derived( x : String ) extends Base( "Base's " + x ) { override def toString = x } Here, the identifier 'x' of the Derived class parameter overrides the field of the Base class, so invoking toString like this: println( new Derived( "string" ).toString ) returns the Derived value and gives the result "string". So a reference to the 'x' parameter prompts the compiler to automatically generate a field on Derived, which is served up in the call to toString. This is very convenient usually, but leads to a replication of the field (I'm now storing the field on both Base and Derived), which may be undesirable. To avoid this replication, I can rename the Derived class parameter from 'x' to something else, like '_x': abstract class Base( val x : String ) final class Derived( _x : String ) extends Base( "Base's " + _x ) { override def toString = x } Now a call to toString returns "Base's string", which is what I want. Unfortunately, the code now looks somewhat ugly, and using named parameters to initialize the class also becomes less elegant: new Derived( _x = "string" ) There is also a risk of forgetting to give the derived classes' initialization parameters different names and inadvertently referring to the wrong field (undesirable since the Base class might actually hold a different value). Is there a better way? Edit: To clarify, I really only want the Base values; the Derived ones just seem necessary for initializing the Base ones. The example only references them to illustrate the ensuing issues. It might be nice to have a way to suppress automatic field generation if the derived class would otherwise end up hiding a base class field.

  • Parsing large delimited files with dynamic number of columns

    Hi, What would be the best approach to parse a delimited file when the columns are unknown before parsing the file? The file format is Rightmove v3 (.blm), the structure looks like this: #HEADER# Version : 3 EOF : '^' EOR : '~' #DEFINITION# AGENT_REF^ADDRESS_1^POSTCODE1^MEDIA_IMAGE_00~ // can be any number of columns #DATA# agent1^the address^the postcode^an image~ agent2^the address^the postcode^^~ // the records have to have the same number of columns as specified in the definition, however they can be empty etc #END# The files can potentially be very large, the example file I have is 40Mb but they could be several hundred megabytes. Below is the code I had started on before I realised the columns were dynamic, I'm opening a filestream as I read that was the best way to handle large files. I'm not sure my idea of putting every record in a list then processing is any good though, don't know if that will work with such large files.   • NHibernate + Remoting = ReflectionPermission Exception

    Hi all, We are dealing with a problem when using NHibernate with Remoting in a machine with full trust enviroment (actually that's our dev machine). The problem happens when whe try to send as a parameter an object previously retrieved from the server, that contains a NHibernate Proxy in one of the properties (a lazy one). As we are in the dev machine, there's no restriction in the trust level of the web app (it's set to Full) and, as a plus, we've configured NHibernate's and Castle's assemblies to full trust in CAS (even thinking that it'd not be necessary as the remoting app in IIS has the full trust level). Does anyone have any idea of what can be causing this exception? Stack trace below.   • Does anyone know how to appropriately deal with user timezones in rails 2.3?

    We're building a rails app that needs to display dates (and more importantly, calculate them) in multiple timezones. Can anyone point me towards how to work with user timezones in rails 2.3(.5 or .8) The most inclusive article I've seen detailing how user time zones are supposed to work is here: http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/howtos/time-zones... although it is unclear when this was written or for what version of rails. Specifically it states that: "Time.zone - The time zone that is actually used for display purposes. This may be set manually to override config.time_zone on a per-request basis." Keys terms being "display purposes" and "per-request basis". Locally on my machine, this is true. However on production, neither are true. Setting Time.zone persists past the end of the request (to all subsequent requests) and also affects the way AR saves to the DB (basically treating any date as if it were already in UTC even when its not), thus saving completely inappropriate values. We run Ruby Enterprise Edition on production with passenger. If this is my problem, do we need to switch to JRuby or something else?     I have a task to operate on complex number. Each number consists of double r = real part, double i = imaginary part and String name. Name must be set within constructor, so I've created int counter, then I'm sending it's value to setNextName function and get name letter back. Unfortunately incrementing this 'counter' value works only within costructor and then it is once again set to 0. How to deal with that?Some constant value? And second problem is that I also need to provide setNextNames(char c) function that will change the counter current value.     Hi, I posted a similar problem but it could not be resolved. I create a relational database of users and groups but for some reason I cannot insert test data with fixtures properly.     I'm trying to use AutoMapper to flatten multiple levels of arrays. Consider the following source classes: class X { public string A { get; set; } public Y[] B { get; set; } } class Y { public string C { get; set; } public Z[] D { get; set; } } class Z { public string E { get; set; } public string F { get; set; } } And the following destination: class Destination { public string A { get; set; } public string C { get; set; } public string E { get; set; } public string F { get; set; } } What I'd like to be able to do is get a List from one or more X, e.g.: Mapper.Map<IEnumerable<X>, IEnumerable<Destination>>(arrayOfX); I'm unable to figure out what sort of mapping configuration to use to achieve this. MapFrom seems like the way to go for 1:1 compositions, but doesn't seem to be able to handle the array (or other enumerable) unless I use AutoMapper's destination naming convention. Any insights on how to achieve this?

    I'm trying to enumerate all the permissions used by all the installed packages, however when I check the requestedPermissions property for each of my installed packages it is always null.   • How can I use a class with the same name from another namespace in my class?

    I have two classes with the same name in different namespaces. I want one of these classes to reference the other class. The reason is that I am migrating to some newer code and I want to update the old code to simply pass through to the newer code. Here is a super basic example: namespace project { namespace legacy { class Content { public: Content(const string& url) : url_(url) { } string url() { return url_; } private: string url_; }; }} // namespace project::legacy; namespace project { namespace current { class Content { public: Content(const string& url) : url_(url) {} string url() { return url_; } private: string url_; }} // namespace project::current; I expected to be able to do the following to project::legacy::Content, but I am having trouble with some linker issues.   • Join + IEqualityComparer<T> and HashCode

    Im writing my own LINQ reference but Im getting troubles with some of the more complicated operators implementations. There is a Join implementation that takes a IEqualityComparer Im getting just crazy. Im trying to understand it first before I write (obviously) Image this two lists: List<string> initials = new List<string> {"A", "B", "C", "D", "E"}; List<string> words = new List<string> {"Ant", "Crawl", "Pig", "Boat", "Elephant", "Arc"}; Nothing weird here. I want to join both lists by the Initial, something like: Initial=A Word=Ant Initial=A Word=Arc Initial=B Word=Boat ... I need a comparator, I wrote this: public class InitialComparator : IEqualityComparer<string> { public bool Equals(string x, string y) { return x.StartsWith(y); } public int GetHashCode(string obj) { return obj[0].GetHashCode(); } } The Join itself: var blah = initials.Join(words, initial => initial, word => word, (initial, word) => new {Initial = initial, Word = word}, new InitialComparator()); It's the first time Im using HashCodes, after a good session of debugging I see that every word go to the comparator and look at its HashCode, if another word has the same HashCode it calls equals. Since I want to compare just the initial I though that I just need the first letter Hash (Am I wrong?) The thing is that this is not working correctly. Its says that "Ant" and "Arc" are equals, Ok, its comparing every word in the same list or not, But it adds only the last word it finds, in this case Arc, ignoring Ant and Ant is equals to "A" too... If I put "Ant" and "Ant" it add both. In short, What is the way of doing something like that? I know that Im doing something wrong. Thank you.

    I'm developing a script using the ruby Treetop library and having issues working with its syntax for regex's. First off, many regular expressions that work in other settings dont work the same in treetop. This is my grammar: (myline.treetop) grammar MyLine rule line string whitespace condition end rule string [\S]* end rule whitespace [\s]* end rule condition "new" / "old" / "used" end end This is my usage: (usage.rb) require 'rubygems' require 'treetop' require 'polyglot' require 'myline' parser = MyLineParser.new p parser.parse("randomstring new") This should find the word new for sure and it does! Now I wont to extend it so that it can find new if the input string becomes "randomstring anotherstring new yetanother andanother" and possibly have any number of strings followed by whitespace (tab included) before and after the regex for rule condition. In other words, if I pass it any sentence with the word "new" etc in it, it should be able to match it. So let's say I change my grammar to: rule line string whitespace condition whitespace string end Then, it should be able to find a match for: p parser.parse("randomstring new anotherstring") So, what do I have to do to allow the string whitespace to be repeated before and after condition? If I try to write this: rule line (string whitespace)* condition (whitespace string)* end , it goes in an infinite loop. If i replace the above () with [], it returns nil In general, regex's return a match when i use the above, but treetop regex's dont. Does anyone have any tips/points on how to go about this? Plus, since there isn't much documentation for treetop and the examples are either too trivial or too complex, is there anyone who knows a more thorough documentation/guide for treetop?

We've considered using a StringBuilder or the Response Stream but it seems quite 'noisy'. Using string.format starts to become difficult to comprehend. 2) How would you go about unit testing this code? It seems a little amateur just doing a string comparison looking for particular output in the string. 3) What about actually testing the eventual JavaScript output? Thanks for your input!
