• Fan running constantly on a Dell D420 laptop

  I'm running latest Ubuntu 12.04 beta on a Dell D420 laptop. The fan is spinning almost constantly - even after turning the PC off, letting it cool down, and then turning it back on, the fan will turn on after some idle time. Not to mention any CPU work. The CPU temps are normal, in range of 50-55 idle, and up to 70 with some load. It wouldn't be an issue, but the same PC running Fedora, or Arch Linux, had a much more modest fan profile - the temps were managed while you seldom heard the fan. To counter the problem, I currently use i8k tools, set manual temperature thresholds which seemed to have worked, but the i8kmon has a tendency to cycle the fan between lower and higher state within aboutin a second intervals - which is extremely annoying. As far as I can tell I did not run any special software (beside laptop-mode-tools), or any additional kernel modules when running Arch Linux and I can't tell about Fedora.

• How can I make a permanently updated copy of a file in a different place to the original file?

  I use two computers, a Linux one for coding and building and a Windows one which has the programming application to load the built program onto the hardware. Both computers have access to a network drive which I use to pass the files from Linux to Windows. My problem is, that every time I build I have to copy the files from where the are created to the network drive. How can I make some sort of file in the network drive on Ubuntu that always mirrors the file which is built in the different location, like a pointer? Thanks!

  I read an article today that listed some basic questions about web development: Describe how POST data was submitted to a server by a browser. Explain a number of HTTP status codes (except maybe 404 and 500). Explain SOLID or name a design pattern. Explain ways to improve a page load speed or user experience. The author says "if you can’t answer the questions above there are a lot of people who wouldn’t think of you as a Senior Web Developer." My questions are: How relevant are these questions in respect to real life web programming and scalability? How true is that statement? In other words, do you consider this knowledge a requirement to be considered a Senior Web Developer? I was able to answer all the questions, too easily it seemed, so I'm wondering whether it is effective to use these or similar questions to screen developers rather than asking them to write sample code.

• Bumblebee - Poor performance with games

  I have an Alienware M14x (GeForce 650m with Optimus) and got Bumblebee working correctly (trying to get ready for steam for linux :)). Also I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity. I get great framerates with glxgears and sauerbraten (a game on the repositories), but when I run games like Bastion and Splice, I get pretty terrible framerate, in fact worse than my integrated intel gpu. I have nvidia-current installed under ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates so it's driver version 310.xx. Also I forgot to add that I haven't been able to test other drivers because they seem to break glx (x can't load the glx module). I've been troubleshooting this for days now, and I'm very nearly out of ideas. Any hints on why only some games are running so poorly with bumblebee?

• Crawling an ajax based page with both a hash fragment and a meta tag

  According to google's documentation on crawling ajax based web pages, if a url contains a hash fragment, or something at the end of an url that looks like #helloworld, and if there is an ! after the #, as in #!helloworld, google will then request the url url?_escaped_fragment_=helloworld. I currently have an ajax based webpage that I want google to be able to crawl. Sometimes, the page uses hash fragments, and for those situations I set up the server so it will return an html snapshot for that page using _escaped_fragment_. However, that webpage often does not load a hash fragment, and when that happens the webpage still loads content using ajax. I couldn't find a good solution to enable ajax crawling for pages that sometimes have a hash fragment and sometimes don't. How can I tell google to use _escaped_fragment_ when there is a hash fragment, and to use something else to get an html snapshot of a page when there isn't a hash fragment?

  I'd like know if having the title tag positioned at the end of <head> tag or in any other position, always inside the <head></head>, can lead to some kind of problem, I'm not talking about SEO stuffs, I'm talking about standards, browser rules, web application rules, or something like this. • Car engine sound simulation

  I have been thinking how to create realistic sound for a car. The main sound is the engine, then all kind of wind, road and suspension sounds. Are there any open source projects for the engine sound simulation? Simply pitching up the sample does not sound too great. The ideal would be to something that allows me to pick type of the engine (i.e. inline-4 vs v-8), add extras like turbo/supercharger whine and finally set the load and rpm. • Setup site folders on Apache and PHP [closed]

  I'm trying to set up my first Apache server on my Windows PC at home and I have real trouble finding out which configuration settings go where. I downloaded and installed XAMPP which seemed to get everything nicely set up and can see a working website on http://localhost. So far so good. The point of this is to develop a website of course, and to make my life easier (irony?), I wanted to let the web site root point to my Eclipse project folder. So I opened httpd.conf, uncommented a VirtualHost block and changed its DocumentRoot to my local path. Now when I try to load http://localhost I get a 403 (Access denied) error. So where do I configure permissions for my folder? And is that all I need to let my site run from the folder specified or am I going to have to clear another hurdle?

• What's New In 11.1.2.1 (Talleyrand SP1)

  This release is primarily about bug fixes and that's what we spent the most time on, but we also addressed a number of other things: 1. Performance improvements We've done a lot of work to improve the performance of page load and execution times. For example, the View Compare page is about half the size it was previously! We've also done a lot of work on the server to improve performance of queries, exports, action scripts, etc. We implemented some finer-grained locking so fewer operations will block other users while they are in progress. We made some optimizations to improve performance when you have a lot of network or database latency as well. Just a few examples: An Import that previously took 8 GB of memory and hours to complete now runs in about 30 minutes and never takes more than 1 GB of RAM. Searching by exact Node Name now completes within 2 seconds even for a hierarchy with millions of nodes. Another search that was taking 30 seconds to run now completes in less than 5 seconds. 2. Upgrade support This release supports automatic upgrade from previous releases, built right into the console. 3. Console Improvements The Console has been reorganized and made easier to use. It is also much more multi-threaded so it responds quicker without freezing up when you save changes or when it needs to get status. 4. Property Namespaces Properties now have a concept called a Namespace. This is tied into the Application Templates to prevent conflicts with duplicate property names. Right now, if you have an AccountType and you pull in the HFM template, it also has AccountType so you end up creating properties with decorations on the name like "Account Type (HFM)". This is no longer necessary. In addition, properties within a namespace must have unique labels but they can be duplicated across namespaces. So in the Property Grid when you click on the HFM category, you just see "AccountType". When you click on MyCategory, you see "AccountType", but they are different properties with different values. Within formulas, the names are still unique (eg: Custom.AccountType vs HFM.AccountType). I'll write more about this one later. 5. Single Sign On DRM now supports Single Sign-On via HSS. For example, if you are using Oracle's OAM as your SSO solution then you configure HSS to use OAM just like you would before. You also configure DRM to use HSS, again just like before. Then you configure OAM to protect the DRM web app, like you would any other website. However once you do those things, users are no longer prompted to enter their username/password. They simply get redirected to OAM if they don't already have a login token, otherwise they pick their application and sail right into DRM. You can also avoid having to pick an application (see the next item) 6. URL-based navigation You can now specify the application you want to log into via the URL. Combined with SSO and your Intranet, it becomes easy to provide links on our intranet portal that take users directly into a specific DRM application. We also support specifying the Version, Hierarchy, and Node. Again, this can be used on your internal portal, but the scenarios get even more interesting when you are using workflow like Oracle BPEL you can automatically generate links within emails that will take users directly to a specific node in the UI. 7. Job status and cancellation A lot of the jobs now report their status and support true cancellation. Action Scripts also report a progress complete percentage since the amount of work is known ahead of time. 8. Action Script Options Action scripts support Option declarations at the top of the file so a script can self-describe (when specified in the file, the corresponding item in the file is ignored). For example: Option|DetectDelimiter Option|UsePropertyNames|true This will tell DRM to automatically detect the delimiter (a pipe symbol in this case) and that all references to properties are by Name, not by Label. Note that when you load a script in the UI, if you use Labels we automatically try to match them up if they are unique. Any duplicates are indicated and you are presented with a choice to pick which property you actually referred to. This is somewhat similar to Version substitution, but tailored for properties. There are other more minor changes and like I said earlier a lot of bug fixes and performance improvements. Hopefully I will get a chance to dig into some of these things in future blog posts.

• What's the better user experience: Waiting once at startup for a long time or waiting frequently for a short time?

  I'm currently design an application that involves a lot of calculation. Now I have generally two possibilities which I have both tested: 1) During startup of the application I calculated only the most important values and these values that consume a lot of time. So the user has to wait approximately 15 seconds during startup. But on the other hand a lot of user interactions require recalculation so that the user often has to wait 2-3 seconds after clicking somewhere until the application has calculated and loaded all values 2) I load everything during startup. This takes from 90 to 120 seconds... This is quite a long time, but the big advantage is that all the user interactions are executed immediately. So what would you generally consider the better approach? Loading all time-consuming operations during startup or when needed?

• Problems with opening CHM Help files from Network or Internet

  As a publisher of a Help Creation tool called Html Help Help Builder, I’ve seen a lot of problems with help files that won't properly display actual topic content and displays an error message for topics instead. Here’s the scenario: You go ahead and happily build your fancy, schmanzy Help File for your application and deploy it to your customer. Or alternately you've created a help file and you let your customers download them off the Internet directly or in a zip file. The customer downloads the file, opens the zip file and copies the help file contained in the zip file to disk. She then opens the help file and finds the following unfortunate result:     The help file  comes up with all topics in the tree on the left, but a Navigation to the WebPage was cancelled or Operation Aborted error in the Help Viewer's content window whenever you try to open a topic. The CHM file obviously opened since the topic list is there, but the Help Viewer refuses to display the content. Looks like a broken help file, right? But it's not - it's merely a Windows security 'feature' that tries to be overly helpful in protecting you. The reason this happens is because files downloaded off the Internet - including ZIP files and CHM files contained in those zip files - are marked as as coming from the Internet and so can potentially be malicious, so do not get browsing rights on the local machine – they can’t access local Web content, which is exactly what help topics are. If you look at the URL of a help topic you see something like this:   mk:@MSITStore:C:\wwapps\wwIPStuff\wwipstuff.chm::/indexpage.htm which points at a special Microsoft Url Moniker that in turn points the CHM file and a relative path within that HTML help file. Try pasting a URL like this into Internet Explorer and you'll see the help topic pop up in your browser (along with a warning most likely). Although the URL looks weird this still equates to a call to the local computer zone, the same as if you had navigated to a local file in IE which by default is not allowed.  Unfortunately, unlike Internet Explorer where you have the option of clicking a security toolbar, the CHM viewer simply refuses to load the page and you get an error page as shown above. How to Fix This - Unblock the Help File There's a workaround that lets you explicitly 'unblock' a CHM help file. To do this: Open Windows Explorer Find your CHM file Right click and select Properties Click the Unblock button on the General tab Here's what the dialog looks like:   Clicking the Unblock button basically, tells Windows that you approve this Help File and allows topics to be viewed.   Is this insecure? Not unless you're running a really old Version of Windows (XP pre-SP1). In recent versions of Windows Internet Explorer pops up various security dialogs or fires script errors when potentially malicious operations are accessed (like loading Active Controls), so it's relatively safe to run local content in the CHM viewer. Since most help files don't contain script or only load script that runs pure JavaScript access web resources this works fine without issues. How to avoid this Problem As an application developer there's a simple solution around this problem: Always install your Help Files with an Installer. The above security warning pop up because Windows can't validate the source of the CHM file. However, if the help file is installed as part of an installation the installation and all files associated with that installation including the help file are trusted. A fully installed Help File of an application works just fine because it is trusted by Windows. Summary It's annoying as all hell that this sort of obtrusive marking is necessary, but it's admittedly a necessary evil because of Microsoft's use of the insecure Internet Explorer engine that drives the CHM Html Engine's topic viewer. • Best Practice for Images in Facebook Pages

  Hello I am looking for best practices when it comes to uploading images on facebook fan pages. I notice on Dell, US Cellular, and the Gap that they load all of their images on one of their web servers. Are there any alternatives? I was hoping for something like being able to upload photos and then hide the gallery. But I couldn't find anything like that. The reason that I ask is that I have access to someone's facebook fan page but not to their webserver so it would be extra work to email someone who does have access the photos and have them upload them to their web server.

• SDL to SFML simple question

  Hey! I've been working on a game in c++ for about a week and a half, and I've been using SDL. However, my current engine only needs the following from whatever library I use: enable double buffering load an image from path into something that I can apply to the screen apply an image to the screen with a certain x,y enable transparency on an image (possibly) image clipping, for sprite sheets. I am fairly sure that SFML has all of this functionality, I'm just not positive. Will someone confirm my suspicions? Also I have one or two questions regarding SFML itself. Do I have to do anything to enable hardware accelerated rendering? How quick is SFML at blending alpha values? (sorry for the less than intelligent question!)

Let it be fps, latency, load time, physics step calc. time, whatever... I also want tools to perform data analysis: per session stats, per hardware stats, avgs, totals, diagrams, etc. So that I could see what are the real world hotspots / bottlenecks. Is there any common out-of-the-box / SaS solution?

• Problems with NVIDIA drivers: White screen with full(or almost full)screen apps

I started learning HTML on windows 7 before switching to Ubuntu and know my HTML images are not working even after i made new images on Ubuntu and put the correct path and made sure the images are .png. After all that the site does not load the new images and the coeds are just fine i put my HTML files on cloud storage before switching to Ubuntu so its not the codes. Also i am using Mozilla Fire Fox.

• Playing a Song causing WP7 to crash on phone, but not on emulator

  Hi there, I am trying to implement a song into a game that begins playing and continually loops on Windows Phone 7 via XNA 4.0. On the emulator, this works fine, however when deployed to a phone, it simply gives a black screen before going back to the home screen. Here is the rogue code in question, and commenting this code out makes the app run fine on the phone: // in the constructor fields private Song song; // in the LoadContent() method song = Content.Load<Song>("song"); // in the Update() method if (MediaPlayer.GameHasControl && MediaPlayer.State != MediaState.Playing) { MediaPlayer.Play(song); } The song file itself is a 2:53 long, 2.28mb .wma file at 106kbps bitrate. • How to play Minecraft Classic?

  First off, I've read through this question: How to install minecraft?. I'm interested in the free web-embedded version (for demo purposes), not the paid and downloaded .jar file. I removed the open-java whatever that Ubuntu prefers to use. I installed sun-java6-jre. Then I ran sudo update-alternatives --config java to ensure I was using Sun's Java. Restarted my browsers, then tried to start the game from: http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp It pops a prompt to make sure I really want to allow direct interaction between minecraft.net and my computer, I agree. The in browser display mumbles something about loading a library, then darkness. The page doesn't crash, ps shows the java plugin process, all seems well except the game doesn't load. I see the same behaviour on Chromium 11.0.662.0 (73963) as Firefox 4 RC1.

• Most efficient way to rebuild a tree structure from data

  Have a question on recursively populating JsTree using the .NET wrapper available via NuGet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. the .NET class JsTree3Node has a property named Children which holds a list of JsTree3Nodes, and the pre-existing table which contains the node structure looks like this NodeId ParentNodeId Data AbsolutePath 1 NULL News /News 2 1 Financial /News/Financial 3 2 StockMarket /News/Financial/StockMarket I have a EF data context from the the database, so my code currently looks like this. var parentNode = new JsTree3Node(Guid.NewGuid().ToString()); foreach(var nodeItem in context.Nodes) { parentNode.Children.Add(nodeItem.Data); // What is the most efficient logic to do this recursively? } as the inline comment says in the above code, what would be the most efficient way to load the JStree data on to the parentNode object. I can change the existing node table to suite the logic so feel free to suggest any changes to improve performance.
