• How can you handle cross-cutting conerns in JAX-WS without Spring or AOP? Handlers?

  I do have something more specific in mind, however: Each web service method needs to be wrapped with some boiler place code (cross cutting concern, yes, spring AOP would work great here but it either doesn't work or unapproved by gov't architecture group). A simple service call is as follows: @WebMethod... public Foo performFoo(...) { Object result = null; Object something = blah; try { soil(something); result = handlePerformFoo(...); } catch(Exception e) { throw translateException(e); } finally { wash(something); } return result; } protected abstract Foo handlePerformFoo(...); (I hope that's enough context). Basically, I would like a hook (that was in the same thread - like a method invocation interceptor) that could have a before() and after() that could could soil(something) and wash(something) around the method call for every freaking WebMethod. Can't use Spring AOP because my web services are not Spring managed beans :( HELP!!!!! Give advice! Please don't let me copy-paste that boiler plate 1 billion times (as I've been instructed to do). • RIA Services for transmitting non DB object-graph

  I have been getting into RIA services because I thought it would simplify dealing with the services layer of web applications I wish to build. I see lots of examples out there showing how to create DomainService classes which expose and consume entities that have some kind of relational database backing, and therefore have foreign-key relationships. However, I would like to know how to expose and consume normal object graphs...objects that contain references to eachother but don't have foreign keys. For example, say I want a service operation called "GetFolderInformation(string pathToFolder)". I want this to return a custom object called "FolderInformation" structured with: - string Name - IEnumerable<FileInformation> Files I cannot get this to work because it seems that RIA wants to deal with entities that have foreign key relationships. Why? Why can't the serializer just see my object references and recreate that in the proxy on the other side? Data exists behind service layers that doesn't necessarily have foreign key relationships...like folder/file for example. EDIT: I realized I hadn't asked my question! My question is, is there a way to do what I am trying to do?

• WCF done broke.

  WCF is completely fouled up on my machine. I start a new sln in VS2008. Add a project (WCF Service Lib).Build the project (builds ok). debug the project -- it gets halfway through the progress bar and bombs out with the error below (real path changed to "my mex path" so codeproject doesn't think its spam). I'm assuming it's file permissions but don't know where to start. For each Windows Service I can perform an action using a button. However, to perform this action I need to know which Machine and which WindowsService are concerned. I have read alot of the documentation and decided to do a small mockup of a system using .Net RIA Services. How do I bind for example in a form to properties that are in the Person Class? Like: <TextBox Text="{Binding FirstName, ElementName=source2}"/> Everything seems to come back as IEnumerable or as CollectionViews (like the DATA binding in the samples) which aren't useful for a single entity. I want a single persons entry, why do I want a CollectionView in which I cannot access properties directly. I have also use the: LoadOperation<Person> oLoadOperation = oDataContext.Load(oDataContext.GetSinglePersonQuery()); I am very close to giving up on this RIA idea and just going with a normal WCF service as it is more predictable and manageable at this stage.

  I'm starting a web application that contains the following projects: Booking.Web Booking.Services Booking.DataObjects Booking.Data I'm using the repository pattern in my data project only. All services will be the same, no matter what happens. However, if a customer wants to use Access, it will use a different data repository than if the customer wants to use SQL Server. I have StructureMap, and want to be able to do the following: Web project is unaffected. It's a web forms application that will only know about the services project and the dataobjects project. When a service is called, it will use StructureMap (by looking up the bootstrapper.cs file) to see which data repository to use.   I am new at wcf programming model and i want to use nettcpbinding. before i ask my question below is my custom binding : <customBinding> <binding name="basic"> <security authenticationMode="UserNameForCertificate"/> <binaryMessageEncoding/> <httpsTransport/> </binding> </customBinding> when i create a service reference using a simple console application it finds a certificate and ask me to use it.and this way i can use the webservice ... but when i change binding to nettcpbinding with TransportWithMessageCredential the service is looking for certificate and could not find it like this : </binding> </netTcpBinding> ServiceCertificate.SetCertificate(StoreLocation.LocalMachine, StoreName.My, X509FindType.FindByIssuerName, "Contoso.com"). at this point i use a customnamevalidator and i do it programmatically. so why when i use nettcpbinding with TransportWithMessageCredential why is SetCertificate could not find the installed certificate ? am i missed something ? or do i have to ad something? thanks .

• Moq, a translator and an expression

  I'm working with an expression within a moq-ed "Get Service" and ran into a rather annoying issue. In order to get this test to run correctly and the get service to return what it should, there's a translator in between that takes what you've asked for, sends it off and gets what you -really- want. • Google App Engine - Uploading blobs and authentication

  (I tried asking this on the GAE forums but didn't get an answer so am trying it here.) Currently to upload blobs, the app engine's blob store service creates a unique one- time URL that a user can post blobs to. My requirement is that I only want authenticated / authorized users to post blobs in my application. I can achieve this currently if the page that includes the multipart form to upload blobs is in my application. However, I am looking to providing a "REST API" for my users to upload their blobs. While it is true that the one-time nature of the upload URL mitigates the chances of rogue use but it's still possible. I was wondering if there is anyone on the app engine team here that can consider a feature where developers can register an upload listener. (Or if there is already a way, I'll be all ears). A standard servlet filter could also potentially do the job. This will give us an opportunity to authenticate / validate / decorate requests before the request gets forwarded to the blob store service. Thanks, Keyur

  I have been having a problem with a notification not opening/going to the correct activity when it has been clicked. If I click the notification from the home screen, the notification disappears and my app is brought to the front, however it remains on the activity which was open before going to the home screen, instead of going to the main screen. What am I doing wrong? How do I specify the activity that will be pulled up?

• How to determine which source files are required for an Eclipse run configuration

  When writing code in an Eclipse project, I'm usually quite messy and undisciplined in how I create and organize my classes, at least in the early hacky and experimental stages. In particular, I create more than one class with a main method for testing different ideas that share most of the same classes. If I come up with something like a useful app, I can export it to a runnable jar so I can share it with friends. But this simply packs up the whole project, which can become several megabytes big if I'm relying on large library such as httpclient. Also, if I decide to refactor my lump of code into several projects once I work out what works, and I can't remember which source files are used in a particular run configuration, all I can do it copy the main class to a new project and then keep copying missing types till the new project compiles. Is there a way in Eclipse to determine which classes are actually used in a particular run configuration? EDIT: Here's an example. Say I'm experimenting with web scraping, and so far I've tried to scrape the search-result pages of both youtube.com and wrzuta.pl. I have a bunch of classes that implement scraping in general, a few that are specific to each of youtube and wrzuta. On top of this I have a basic gui common to both scrapers, but a few wrzuta- and youtube-specific buttons and options. The WrzutaGuiMain and YoutubeGuiMain classes each contain a main method to configure and show the gui for each respective website. Can Eclipse look at each of these to determine which types are referenced?

• Is there the equivalent of cloud computing for modems?

  I asked this question on SF, and someone recommended that I ask it here - (I don't think I have enough points to move a question from SF to SO - and in any case, I don't know how to do it - so here is the question again): I am interested in the concept of PAAS (platform as a service). However, all talk about SAAS/PAAS seems to focus on only the computer itself - not its peripherals. Is it possible to 'outsource' modems as a resource - so that an app running remotely can pump data to a modem in the cloud? As a bit of background to the question, a group of us are thinking of starting a company that offers similar services to companies like twilio etc - but I want to 'outsource' both the computing hardware (thats PAAS - the easy bit) and the modems (thats what I cant seem to find any info on). Does anyone know if modems can be bundled as part of a PAAS service? - alternatively, is there a way that an application running on one computer can communicate (i.e. pump data) to a remote modem residing on another machine?. I assume I can come up with some protocol over UDP or TCP - but there is no point reinventing the wheel - if such a protocol like that already exists (or if it some open source software allows one to do this). Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

  Reading up on this, and specifically reading the Microsoft docs, it looks like it should be returning the number of PHYSICAL processors, and that you should use GetLogicalProcessorInformation to figure out how many LOGICAL processors you have. Here's the doc I found on the SYSTEM_INFO structure: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms724958(v=VS.85).aspx And here's the doc on GetLogicalProcessorInformation: (spaces added to get through spam filter) http:// msdn.microsoft.com/ en-us/ library/ ms683194.aspx Reading up on it further though, in most of the discussions I've found on this topic, developers say to that GetSystemInfo (and the SYSTEM_INFO structure) report the number of LOGICAL processors. When I search again, I find that MS did release some info on this (and a hot fix), here (spaces added to get through spam filter): http:// support. microsoft.com/ kb/936235 Reading that, it sounds like on Xp, pre-service Pack 3, GetSystemInfo reports the number of LOGICAL processors in the SYSTEM_INFO structure. It also reads to me that on Windows Vista and Windows 7, GetSystemInfo should be reporting the number of PHYSICAL processors (different to Windows XP pre-service Pack 3). Does anyone know what it actually does? Does GetSystemInfo really report the number of physical processors (on the same computer) differently, depending on which OS it's running on?

• Translating CURL to FLEX HTTPRequests

  I am trying to convert from some CURL code to FLEX/ActionScript. Since I am 100% ignorant about CURL and 50% ignorant about Flex and 90% ignorant on HTTP in general... I'm having some significant difficulty. The following CURL code is from http://code.google.com/p/ga-api-http-samples/source/browse/trunk/src/v2/accountFeed.sh I have every reason to believe that it's working correctly. • Serializing Exceptions WCF + Silverlight

  I have a WCF service I use to submit bugs for my project. Snippet of the data class: Private _exception As Exception <DataMember()> _ Public Property Exception As Exception Get Return _exception End Get Set(ByVal value As Exception) _exception = value End Set End Property I have a Silverlight app that uses the WCF service to send any bugs home if and when they occur. This is the error I'm testing with: Dim i As Integer = 5 i = i / 0 The problem is SL is banging on with this message: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException was unhandled by user code Message=There was an error while trying to serialize parameter :bug. The InnerException message was 'Type 'System.OverflowException' with data contract name 'OverflowException:http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/System' is not expected. Add any types not known statically to the list of known types - for example, by using the KnownTypeAttribute attribute or by adding them to the list of known types passed to DataContractSerializer.'. Please see InnerException for more details. Is there some trick to get a generic .NET Exception (any InnerException) to serialize properly? I'm not doing anything funky with the exception - it's just a plain 'ol exception Thanks for any help.

• Generic object to object mapping with parametrized constructor

  I have a data access layer which returns an IDataRecord. I have a WCF service that serves DataContracts (dto's). These DataContracts are initiated by a parametrized constructor containing the IDataRecord as follows: [DataContract] public class DataContractItem { [DataMember] public int ID; [DataMember] public string Title; public DataContractItem(IDataRecord record) { this.ID = Convert.ToInt32(record["ID"]); this.Title = record["title"].ToString(); } } Unfortanately I can't change the DAL, so I'm obliged to work with the IDataRecord as input. But in generat this works very well. The mappings are pretty simple most of the time, sometimes they are a bit more complex, but no rocket science. However, now I'd like to be able to use generics to instantiate the different DataContracts to simplify the WCF service methods. I want to be able to do something like: public T DoSomething<T>(IDataRecord record) { ... return new T(record); } So I'd tried to following solutions: Use a generic typed interface with a constructor. doesn't work: ofcourse we can't define a constructor in an interface Use a static method to instantiate the DataContract and create a typed interface containing this static method. doesn't work: ofcourse we can't define a static method in an interface Use a generic typed interface containing the new() constraint doesn't work: new() constraint cannot contain a parameter (the IDataRecord) Using a factory object to perform the mapping based on the DataContract Type. does work, but: not very clean, because I now have a switch statement with all mappings in one file. I can't find a real clean solution for this. Can somebody shed a light on this for me? The project is too small for any complex mapping techniques and too large for a "switch-based" factory implementation.

• Spring - Transaction Readonly

  Hello Gurus! Just wanted your expert opinions on declarative transaction management for Spring. Here is my setup - A. DAO Layer is Plain old JDBC using jdbcTemplete (No hibernate etc) B. Service Layer is POJO with declarative trasnactions as follows - save*, readonly=false, rollback for Throwable Things work fine with above setup. However when I say get*, readonly=true I see errors in my log file saying - Database connection cannot be marked as readonly. This happens for all get* methods in Service Layer. Now my questions - A. Do I have to say get* as readonly? All my get* methods are pure read DB operations. I do not wish to run them in any transaction context. How serious is the above error? B. When I remove the get* confiiguration, I do not see the errors, morever all my simple get* operations are performed without transactions. Is this the way to go? C. Why would anyone want to have transactional methods where readonly = true? Is there any practical significance of this configuration? Thank you! As always your resposes are much appreciated!

• Memory allocation in detached NSThread to load an NSDictionary in background?

  I am trying to launch a background thread to retrieve XML data from a web service. I developed it synchronously - without threads, so I know that part works. Now I am ready to have a non-blocking service by spawning a thread to wait for the response and parse. I created an NSAutoreleasePool inside the thread and release it at the end of the parsing. The code to spawn and the thread are as follows: Spawn from main-loop code: . . [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(spawnRequestThread:) toTarget:self withObject:url]; . . Thread (inside 'self'): -(void) spawnRequestThread: (NSURL*) url { NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; parser = [[NSXMLParser alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:url]; [self parseContentsOfResponse]; [parser release]; [pool release]; } The method parseContentsOfResponse fills an NSMutableDictionary with the parsed document contents. I would like to avoid moving the data around a lot and allocate it back in the main-loop that spawned the thread rather than making a copy. First, is that possible, and if not, can I simply pass in an allocated pointer from the main thread and allocate with 'dictionaryWithDictionary' method? That just seems so inefficient. Are there perferred designs?

• send email C# using smtp server with username password authentification

  I have a piece of code that sends email.. heres the code This is not working for me. This a remote smtp service ... and i double checked that email web access works fine .. i can login using the gui, recieve and send emails. But when i try to do it through code .. it fails with the message ... {System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.0 No AUTH command has been given.   In the App ID section of the Program Portal, locate the App ID you wish to use with the Apple Push Notification service. Only App IDs with a specific bundle ID can be used with the APNs. You cannot use a “wild-card” application ID. You must see “Available” under the Apple Push Notification service column to register this App ID and configure a certificate for this App ID. Click the ‘Configure’ link next to your desired App ID. In the Configure App ID page, check the Enable Push Notification Services box and click the Configure button. Clicking this button launches the APNs Assistant, which guides you through the next series of steps that create your App ID specific Client SSL certificate. Download the Client SSL certificate file to your download location. Navigate to that location and double-click the certificate file (which has an extension of cer) to install it in your keychain. When you are finished, click Done in the APNS Assistant. Double-clicking the file launches Keychain Access. Make sure you install the certificate in your login keychain on the computer you are using for provider development. The APNs SSL certificate should be installed on your notification server. When you finish these steps you are returned to the Configure App ID page of the iPhone Dev Center portal. The certificate should be badged with a green circle and the label “Enabled”. To complete the APNs set-up process, you will need to create a new provisioning profile containing your APNs-enabled App ID. IS it posssible to do theses steps through code.

• How can I programatically create this custom binding?

  We've got to access a web service that uses soap11... no problem I'll just set the binding as: BasicHttpBinding wsBinding = new BasicHttpBinding(BasicHttpSecurityMode.TransportWithMessageCredential); Nope. No dice. So I asked the host of the service why we're having authentication issues and he said that our config needed to have this custom binding: <bindings> <customBinding> <binding name="lbinding"> <security authenticationMode="UserNameOverTransport" messageSecurityVersion="WSSecurity11WSTrustFebruary2005WSSecureConversationFebruary2005WSSecurityPolicy11" securityHeaderLayout="Strict" includeTimestamp="false" requireDerivedKeys="true" keyEntropyMode="ServerEntropy"> </security> <textMessageEncoding messageVersion="Soap11" /> <httpsTransport authenticationScheme ="Negotiate" requireClientCertificate ="false" realm =""/> </binding> </customBinding> </bindings> Only problem is we're creating our binding programmatically not via the config. So if someone could point me in the right direction in regards to changing my BasicHttpBinding into a custombinding that conforms to the .config value provided I'll give them a big shiny gold star for the day.
