• Bluetooth device won't re-add after being removed (Windows 7)

  I've got a SBH52 headset, it works fine on my android phone, then I tried to use it with my Windows 7 PC, then it won't work because Microsoft Windows dosen't have native support for A2DP connections and one of the answers on the previous link said that removing the device from "devices and printers", running this software and then re-add the device would solve the problem. But the big problem is that they won't pair again: I tried, hopelessly, the suggested fixes from Windows, it won't work. By the way, it is Windows 7 (x64), it just looks like Windows 8. I had this problem once many years ago with other PC and Bluetooth device, I remember it had something to do with drivers that were not removed and I tried to delete them from somewhere, and as far as I remember it worked, but no idea how. In short, how can I pair it again with my PC?

• Slide-decks from recent Adelaide SQL Server UG meetings

  The UK has been well represented this summer at the Adelaide SQL Server User Group, with presentations from Chris Testa-O’Neill (isn’t that the right link? Maybe try this one) and Martin Cairney. The slides are available here and here. I thought I’d particularly mention Martin’s, and how it’s relevant to this month’s T-SQL Tuesday. Martin spoke about Policy-Based Management and the Enterprise Policy Management Framework – something which is remarkably under-used, and yet which can really impact your ability to look after environments. If you have policies set up, then you can easily test each of your SQL instances to see if they are still satisfying a set of policies as defined. Automation (the topic of this month’s T-SQL Tuesday) should mean that your life is made easier, thereby enabling to you to do more. It shouldn’t remove the human element, but should remove (most of) the human errors. People still need to manage the situation, and work out what needs to be done, etc. We haven’t reached a point where computers can replace people, but they are very good at replace the mundaneness and monotony of our jobs. They’ve made our lives more interesting (although many would rightly argue that they have also made our lives more complex) by letting us focus on the stuff that changes. Martin named his talk Put Your Feet Up, which nicely expresses the fact that managing systems shouldn’t be about running around checking things all the time. It must be about having systems in place which tell you when things aren’t going well. It’s never quite as simple as being able to actually put your feet up, but certainly no system should require constant attention. It’s definitely a policy we at LobsterPot adhere to, whether it’s an alert to let us know that an ETL package has run successfully, or a script that generates some code for a report. If things can be automated, it reduces the chance of error, reduces the repetitive nature of work, and in general, keeps both consultants and clients much happier.

• Can't find instructions how to use Windows 7 drivers on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Windows 7 x64 comes with all sorts of signed drivers so there's high probability that all drivers for your machine will be installed during system setup. On the other hand Windows Server 2008 R2 doesn't. Event though it's practically the same OS when it comes to drivers. I know there's a very good reason for this difference. It's a server product, not a desktop one. But the thing is that many power users and developers use server OS on their workstations which are usually desktop machines (a bit more powerful though) and would benefit from the whole driver spectrum that Windows 7 offers... Question I know I've been reading on the internet about some trick where you first install Windows 7, than do something to get either all Windows 7 drivers or just those installed, and then install Windows Server 2008 R2 and use those drivers of Windows 7. The thing is I can't find these instructions on the internet any more. If anybody knows where they are please provide the link for the rest of us.

• Print server not being recognized after switching router and upgrading to 64 bit

  I recently upgraded Windows 7 from 32 bit to 64 bit. I also switched my router from a very old model of Netgear to TP-Link. Before these updates, I had been using a USB print server by IOGear. After the updates, I took care to reinstall the drivers for both the print server and the printer, and picked the option to install a printer via TCP/IP, but no matter what I did, the driver software couldn't locate the print server on my network. I hit refresh, restarted my machine, turned off the firewalls and tried again. Still nothing. I'm at my wit's end. What else is left to try? Edit: More info. The print server is connected to the router via LAN line. The computer is connected to the router with a wireless connection.

• Problem with SLATEC routine usage with gfortran

  I am trying to compute the Bessel function of the second kind (Bessel_y) using the SLATEC's Amos library available on Netlib. Here is the SLATEC code I use. Below I have pasted my test program that calls SLATEC routine CBESY. PROGRAM BESSELTEST IMPLICIT NONE REAL:: FNU INTEGER, PARAMETER :: N = 2, KODE = 1 COMPLEX,ALLOCATABLE :: CWRK (:), CY (:) COMPLEX:: Z, ci INTEGER :: NZ, IERR ALLOCATE(CWRK(N), CY(N)) ci = cmplx (0.0, 1.0) FNU = 0.0e0 Z = CMPLX(0.3e0, 0.4e0) CALL CBESY(Z, FNU, KODE, N, CY, NZ, CWRK, IERR) WRITE(*,*) 'CY: ', CY WRITE(*,*) 'IERR: ', IERR STOP END PROGRAM And here is the output of the above program: CY: ( 5.78591091E-39, 5.80327020E-39) ( 0.0000000 , 0.0000000 ) IERR: 4 Ierr = 4 meaning there is some problem with the input itself. To be precise, the IERR = 4 means the following as per the header info in CBESY.f file: ! IERR=4, CABS(Z) OR FNU+N-1 TOO LARGE - NO COMPUTA- ! TION BECAUSE OF COMPLETE LOSSES OF SIGNIFI- ! CANCE BY ARGUMENT REDUCTION Clearly, CABS(Z) (which is 0.50) or FNU + N - 1 (which is 1.0) are not too large but still the routine CBESY throws the error message number 4 as above. The CY array should have following values for the argument given in above code: CY(1) = -0.4983 + 0.6700i CY(2) = -1.0149 + 0.9485i These values are computed using Matlab. I can't figure out what's the problem when I call CBESY from SLATEC library. Any clues? Much thanks for the suggestions/help. • Static route in conflict with a default route

  Hi guys, I have a default route configured. 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.1 I'd like to add a static route to pass traffic destined for 192.168.1.51 via a load balancer's redundant virtual interface at 192.168.1.2. ip route add 192.168.1.51 mask 255.255.255.255 via 192.168.1.2 When I try to add the static route I get this error. Error: either "to" is duplicate or "default" is garbage." It doesn't want to add the static route because it's in conflict with the default route. Is there a way around this? Regards Ossan

• I get Get-WmiObject : Generic Failure error on an XP Machine. What needs to be done to get rid of this?

  I am trying make an uninstall app which removes an application X on a regular basis. The starting point to access applications installed in a Windows machine is through retrieving them from a WMI Class called Win32_Product. But when I run the basic command like this, I get the below error. I have searched technet and SO, but either their workarounds did not work for me or were too technical in detail which did not make sense to me. Please help. • Disable drop shadows around windows or the menu bar on OS X

  Nocturne has an option for disabling shadows around windows. But it's only available in night mode, and changing the mode (like when opening the application) causes an annoying screen flash animation. There's no way to disable the shadow under the menu bar either. MacThemes Forum / Removing the menubar dropshadow has a link to a .psd for making special desktop backgrounds that cancel out the shadow under the menu bar. But it only works if that area of the desktop picture has a low enough brightness. Some applications that cover the desktop (like DeskShade) also cover the menu bar's shadow. That's not a real solution though. Unsanity's ShadowKiller stopped working in either 10.5 or 10.6. (It does still work on 10.7.2, but the website says "NOT compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Leopard", and I couldn't get it to work on a 10.6 installation.)   For some reason this year some of my peers decided to vote for me as a contender for Visual Studio ALM MVP of the year. I am not sure what I did to deserve this, but a number of people have commented that I have a rather useful blog. I feel wholly unworthy to join the ranks of previous winners: Ed Blankenship (2010) Martin Woodward (2009) Thank you to everyone who voted regardless of who you voted for. If there was a prize for the best group of MVP’s then the Visual Studio ALM MVP would be a clear winner, as would the product group of product groups that is Visual Studio ALM Group. To use a phrase that I have learned since moving to Seattle and probably use too much: you guys are all just awesome. I have tried my best in the last year to document not only every problem that I have had with Team Foundation Server (TFS), but also to document as many of the things I am doing as possible. I have taken some of Adam Cogan’s rules to heart and when a customer asks me a question I always blog the answer and send them a link. This allows both my blog and my understanding of TFS to grow while creating a useful bank of content. The idea is that if one customer asks, all benefit. I try, when writing for my blog, to capture both the essence and the context for a problem being solved. This allows more people to benefit as they do not need to understand the specifics of an environment to gain value. I have a number of goals for this year that I think will help increase value in the community: persuade my new colleagues at Northwest Cadence to do more blogging (Steve, Jeff, Shad and Rennie) Rangers Project – TFS Iteration Automation with Willy-Peter Schaub, Bill Essary, Martin Hinshelwood, Mike Fourie, Jeff Bramwell and Brian Blackman Write a book on the Team Foundation Server API with Willy-Peter Schaub, Mike Fourie and Jeff Bramwell write more useful blog posts I do not think that these things are beyond the realms of do-ability, but we will see…

Referred these: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities Now I have a linux RHEL machine, details are as follows: (Linux version 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5 ([email protected]) (gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-46)) x86_64 GNU/Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga)) I want to set up the above mentioned software's on this(RHEL) machine, for that I do (as per the reference link): install yum-priorities but i am unable to install this on my said machine, because the default yum repository provided by RHEL doesn't contain this. How can i deploy the above software's on my RHEL machine, suggest any safe alternate. Please guide since i am a newbie in this matter. thanks in advance Ashish Sharma

• Bash vs. Gnu screen : Replace Ctrl-A with Ctrl-Shift-A

  I'm a new user to GNU Screen. I've been using Bash for a very long time, and I want to give GNU Screen a try. As you know, GNU Screen uses 'C-a' (Control-A) as as the command character. Trouble is, this interferes with the Line Editing feature in Bash (and GNU Readline), because Control-A in Bash will Move to the start of the line." I know I can set the Command Character to another key sequence, like "^Q" or "``" (Backtick), but I have trouble finding another key sequence which isn't already in use (^Q is used by the terminal, backtick is used when writing shell scripts). It appears that the Command Character may only be one or two characters in length. Can I set the GNU Screen control character to be something like "Control-Shift-A"? (I can't use more then one hyperlink yet, so I cannot link to the Bash documentation)

  I have a problem with url. I can access the djando app home page ( localhost/djangotest/ ) but can't access the admin section ( localhost/djangotest/admin/ ). I can access it using the django server instead of lighttpd. • What Excel formats are (most) compatible with LibreOffice and Google Docs?

  I use Excel (and occasionally Numbers), but I want to be able to share with users of Google Docs and LibreOffice (and I may want to switch in the future). What's the most compatible format to save my Excel spreadsheets in? I'm asking as a question here rather than merely Googling for a list of formats that LibreOffice and GoogleDocs support (although I'm doing that too, and will post the answer if no one else does) because there are likely to be hidden "gotchas" that only someone who has experience using all of the above applications is going to know about. Answers that include personal experience will be preferred over those that only post a link to the relevant facts on google.com and libreoffice.com.

• Evoland: A Video Game About Video Game History

  Browser-based Evoland is, hands down, one of the more clever video game concepts to come across our desk. The game itself is a history of video games–as you play the game the game evolves from a limited 8-bit monochrome adventure into a modern game. You start off unable to do anything but move right and collect a treasure chest. That treasure chest unlocks the left key (keys are configured in a WASD style keypad) which in turn allows you to move around a simple monochromatic forest clearing to unlock the rest of the movement keys. From there you begin unlocking more game features, effectively evolving the game from monochrome to 16 and then 64 bit color and unlocking various game play features. The game itself is short and can be played in about the same time you could watch a video covering the basics of various game changes over the last 30 years but actually playing the game and watching the evolution in progress is far more rewarding. • Can not create a linked server between SQL Server 2008 on a desktop and my laptop

  I'm having an issue getting the linked server to connect between a desktop and my laptop. Both have SQL server 2008 and the link is coming from the desktop to my laptop. Also, both computers have Windows 7. I don't have any issues creating the linked server from my laptop to the desktop. The error I'm getting is "Login failed for user '[UserName]'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)." I let the user name out for security reasons. The user is an sa on both SQL servers and an admin on both computers. Does anyone have an idea what could be stopping me from creating the linked server from the desktop to my laptop?

• July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 20 (sys.dm_tran_locks)

  The sys.dm_tran_locks DMV is used to return active lock resources on your server. Locking is a mechanism used by SQL Server to protect the integrity of data when you have multiple users that may potentially access the same data at the same time. Let’s run a query against this DMV so we can analyze the results. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_tran_locks As we can see, its a lot of lock information returned from this DMV. I will not go into detail about each of the columns returned, but I will touch on the ones that I feel are the most important. The first column in the output is the resource_type column which tells you the type of lock a particular row represents. It could be a PAGE lock, RID, OBJECT, DATABASE, or several other lock types. The resource_database_id represents the id of the database for a particular lock resource. The resource_lock_partition column represents the ID of a lock partition. When you have a table that is partitioned, locks can be escalated to the partition level before going to a table level lock. The request_mode column gives us information about the type of lock that is being requested. From the screenshots above we see RangeS-S locks which represent a share range lock and IS locks which represent Intent Shared locks. The request_status column displays whether the lock has been granted or whether the lock is waiting to be acquired. The request_session_id  shows the session_id that is requesting the lock. This DMV is the best place to go when you need to identify the exact locks that are being held or pending for individual requests. You might need this information when you are troubleshooting severe blocking or deadlocking problems on your server. • GeForce 9600GT support for dual monitor setup

  I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT (point of view, link) on an Asus M2V-MX motherboard. The card has one DVI, HDMI and S-Video output. The graphics card does not seem to support dual monitors: the driver control panel for the graphics card does not detect a second monitor that is attached via S-Video (which leads me to believe that it doesn't support dual monitors with DVI and the other connections). Would it be possible to use a VGA/DVI splitter to attach two monitors to the single DVI output on the graphics card? Would this allow for a dual monitor setup, or only mirroring? How do I know if the graphic card supports this? With this particular motherboard, would it be possible to use the onboard video for another monitor?

• Applying memory limits to screen sessions

  You can set memory usage limits for standard Linux applications in: /etc/security/limits.conf Unfortunately, I previously thought these limits only apply to user applications and not system services. This means that users can by bypass their limits by launching applications through a system service such as screen. I'd like to know if it's possible to let users use screen but still enforce application limits. Jeff had the great idea of using nohup which obeys user limits (wonderful!), but I would still like to know if it's possible to mimic the useful windowing features of screen. EDIT: It seems my screen sessions are now obeying my hard address space limits defined in /etc/security/limits.conf. I must have been making some mistake. I recently installed cpulimit, but I doubt that's the solution.Thanks for the nohup tip, Jeff! It's very useful. Link to CPU Limit package

• Do you need all that data?

  I read an amazing post over on ars technica (link: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/03/the-software-brains-behind-the-particle-colliders.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss) abvout the LHC, or as they are also known, the "particle colliders". Beyond just the pure scientific geek awesomeness, these instruments have the potential to collect more data than you can (or possibly should) store. Actually, this problem has a lot in common with a BI system. There's so much granular detail available in the source systems that a designer has to decide how, and how much, to roll up the data. Whenver you do that, you lose fidelity, but in many cases that's OK. Take, for example, your car's speedometer. You don't actually need to track each and every point of speed as it happens. You only need to know that you're hovering around the speed limit at a certain point in time. Since this is the way that humans percieve data, is there some lesson we should take in the design of data "flows" - and what implications does this have for new technologies like StreamInsight?   Last month, AIIM, the global community of information professionals, announced the winners of the 2012 Carl E. Nelson Best Practices Awards. And San Joaquin County, California won in the small company category for 1-100 employees. The Carl E. Nelson Best Practices Award was established to recognize excellence in the area of information management. "Best practice" denotes a standard of excellence that has been achieved with an organization and refers to a process that can be quantified, adapted and repeated. Like many counties, San Joaquin County, California, was faced with huge challenges due to decreasing funds and staff, including decreased cost of building capability. It needed to streamline processes, cut costs per activity, modernize and strengthen the infrastructure, and adopt new technology and standards such as the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM). The Integrated Justice Information System (IJIS) provides a Web-based system to link more than 650,000 residents, 18 agencies countywide and other law enforcement systems nationwide. The county’s modernization initiative focused on replacing its outdated warrant system, implementing service-oriented architecture (SOA) to simplify integration between county law and justice systems, deploying Business Process Management (BPM), Case Management with content management, and Web technologies from Oracle.   I am getting started with openLdap 2.4 and am having a bit of trouble, all the examples I see seem to refer to previous versions which used the text config file slapd.conf but from what I see on discussions about v2.4, this has been deprecated. I thought prehaps I needed to add a user, and log in as them but when I try and run an ldapadd command, I get a prompt to enter a password: Enter LDAP Password: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) Notes: I installed openldap server via yum (in fedora 15), and have installed phpldapadminbut also can try things on the command line if anyone has suggestions. After installing and starting I get the following response from a search: # ldapsearch -x -b '' -s base '(objectclass=*)' namingContexts # extended LDIF # LDAPv3 # base <> with scope baseObject # filter: (objectclass=*) # requesting: namingContexts dn: namingContexts: dc=my-domain,dc=com # search result search: 2 result: 0 Success # numResponses: 2 # numEntries: 1 I am glad to remove and reinstall the server if that helps, can anyone provide a link to tips that works for version 2.4 for a new setup?
