• How to get rid of exceptions thrown by the .NET Framework

  In a recent project I'm using a lot of databinding and xml-serialization. I'm using C#/VS2008 and have downloaded symbol information for the .NET framework to help me when debugging. The app I'm working on has a global "catch all" exception handler to present a more presentable messages to users if there happens to be any uncaught exceptions being thrown. My problem is when I turn on Exceptions-Thrown to be able to debug exceptions before they are caught by the "catch all". It seems to me that the framework throws a lot of exceptions that are not immediately caught (for example in ReflectPropertyDescriptor) so that the exception I'm actually trying to debug gets lost in the noise. Is there any way to get rid of exceptions caused by the framework but keep the ones from my own code? Update: after more research and actually trying to get rid of the exceptions that get thrown by the framework (many which turn out to be known issues in the framework, example: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1127431/xmlserializer-giving-filenotfoundexception-at-constructor) I finally found a solution that works for me, which is turning on "Just my code" in Tools Options Debugging General Enable Just My Code in VS2008.

• PC freezing when used to print labels

  Hi I have a windows XP machine that is used to print labels from a Zebra label printer. It is connected a member of the domain. I am getting reports that when people try to use the computer it will sometimes be frozen to the point where they have to physically shut the machine down and boot to get it responding. (this happens about once a day). I guess I could store the user's id, which is an integer, and then retrieve the user from the database using its id. But it seems really unefficient.

• How to debug KVO

  In my program I use KVO manually to observe changes to values of object properties. I receive an EXC_BAD_ACCESS signal at the following line of code inside a custom setter: [self willChangeValueForKey:@"mykey"]; The weird thing is that this happens when a factory method calls the custom setter and there should not be any observers around. I do not know how to debug this situation. Update: The way to list all registered observers is observationInfo. It turned out that there was indeed an object listed that points to an invalid address. However, I have no idea at all how it got there. Update 2: Apparently, the same object and method callback can be registered several times for a given object - resulting in identical entries in the observed object's observationInfo. When removing the registration only one of these entries is removed. This behavior is a little counter-intuitive (and it certainly is a bug in my program to add multiple entries at all), but this does not explain how spurious observers can mysteriously show up in freshly allocated objects (unless there is some caching/reuse going on that I am unaware of). Modified question: How can I figure out WHERE and WHEN an object got registered as an observer? Update 3: Specific sample code. ContentObj is a class that has a dictionary as a property named mykey. They all work by adding/removing themselves as observers. Obviously, anything that results in multiple registrations is a bug and could sit somewhere hidden in these methods. My question targets strategies on how to debug this kind of situation. Alternatively, please feel free to provide an alternative strategy for implementing this kind of notification/observer pattern.

• Mapping printers using Group Policy Preferences; works on Windows XP, not on Windows 7 x64

  I'm trying to use Group Policy Preferences to manage user connections to shared printers. The print server is Windows Server 2003 R2 Std edition. Several printers are installed, and I've added x64 editions of all the drivers to the print server as well. I've created a new GPO containing the printer preference settings. Printer mappings are targeted based on AD security group membership. I log on to a Windows XP PC with the Group Policy CSEs installed and the printer maps perfectly. I log on to a Windows 7 x64 PC and it doesn't map. If I manually connect to the shared printer, I get a prompt which asks me to confirm if I trust the server before installing the driver, and then it works perfectly. I have domain admin rights and my UAC settings have not been changed from the default, i.e. UAC is enabled and the default level is selected. Is the printer mapping failing because it's unable to prompt me to install the driver, or is there something else afoot?

• How do I remove a printer connection without the user's intervention?

  Here's the situation: We're replacing 11 printers with newer models, and we'll be installing them on our print server and sharing them out. The plan is to share the new printers under different names than the ones they're replacing, and un-share the old ones. So I need to come up with a way to remove the client connections to old printers automatically. Clients are mostly Windows 7 with a few XP. My first idea was to call prnmngr.vbs from the login script to remove each old printer explicitly by name. The problem is that some users don't log out when they're done for the day, so I can't count on their login script running before they next need to print. I could remotely run prnmngr.vbs using SCCM, but if it's not 'impersonating' the user, I don't think it will remove their printers. Any ideas? Could I lookup how to access WMI using c# code and write a "trojan" to remove specific printers without requiring the user to do anything? (I'm only half joking). I'm open to any suggestion! Thanks!

• MS Access Interop - How to set print filename?

  Hi all, I'm using Delphi 2009 and the MS Access Interop COM API. I'm trying to figure out two things, but one is more important than the other right now. I need to know how to set the file name when sending the print job to the spooler. Right now it's defaulting to the Access DB's name, which can be something different than the file's name. I need to just ensure that when this is printed it enters the print spool using the same filename as the actual file itself - not the DB's name. My printer spool is actually a virtual print driver that converts documents to an image. That's my main issue. The second issue is how to specify which printer to use. This is less important at the moment because I'm just using the default printer for now. It would be nice if I could specify the printer to use, though. Does anyone know either of these two issues? • Visual Studio 2012 crashes everytime I try to debug with error CLR20r3

  Everytime I try to debug one of my apps I get the below error message. Anyone have any ideas? I tried running Visual Studio in safe mode but I get the same thing. I also tried to repair the install and completely reinstall it with no luck :(. • Debug an Eclipse plugin in a different language?

  I'm trying to debug an Eclipse plug-in when it is running in another language (japanese). The problem I'm encountering is: I can't get the Eclipse debugger to run another Eclipse instance in another language. I've got all my strings externalized to resource bundles ... and, when the plug-in is installed in Eclipse on a machine that has it's default language set to Japanese, it runs OK ... but there are a few problems that I need to resolve. I've tried setting the Eclipse -nl parameter to ja_JP along with '-Duser.language=ja -Duser.country=JP' on the VM arguments, but every time Eclipse is launched, everything is in English. Any suggestions on how I can get the debugger to launch the Eclipse instance in Japanese?

  I generally build my openssl libs by doing this: perl Configure VC-WIN32 ms\do_masm nmake -f ms\ntdll.mak nmake -f ms\ntdll.mak test For debugging minidumps, I'd like to get a pdb file for the 2 dlls (while still building them in "release" mode). I've added /Zi to the CFLAGS part of ms\ntdll.mak, but I still get "Binary was not built with debug information" when I look at the in-memory modules in the visual studio debugger.   Is there any plug-in for Visual Studio that can display the associated Application Pool name for those w3wp processes when debugging them with "Attach to Process..." ? Usually I have to do following steps before debugging: c: \Windows\system32\inetsrv\appcmd list wps then I get the process id for the Application Pool I want to debug, and then attach it in the Attach to Process window. I feel it will be very pleasure if there's a plug in can do this automatically, but didn't find any such thing after Googled.

• How do I debug a DLL from VS2008?

  I have a program written in VB.Net (Visual Studio 2008) that uses a DLL written in Visual C++ by another developer. I'd like to be able to step in to the C++ code as my code makes calls to methods in the DLL. Since the DLL is it's own solution, I don't think it can be included in my solution/project. I tried putting the DLLs pdb file in the debug/bin directory with the rest of my build and pdb files. However, when I get to the point in stepping through my code, and it gets to the dll call, it just steps right over the dll code. Do I have to manually load symbols? Not sure what I'm doing wrong. • Visual Studio 2008 debug does not stop on error

  I have a simple Windows App written in Visual Studio 2008 (.NET 3.0, C#). Without making any change to the project, solution or Visual Studion (from what I can remember), something weird is happening: when I debug (or run) my application, when it hits an error, Visual Studio does not show me any messagebox with the error, and does not stop execution. It "looks" like nothing happended... the code after the error is not executed, but everything else continues to behave like nothing had happened. Any ideeas about what might be wrong? I don't think it's a big deal, but I can't seem to find it. Thanks!

• Where is the node.js file in the stack trace located?

  Obviously, I'm pretty new to node.js. I'm attempting to debug a node.js application and I see node.js in the stack trace. I would like to put some sys.puts calls in there, but I cannot locate the node.js that is being run by my server. Is there a way to tell where node.js is located? Is there an equivalent to Ruby's FILE in node? Thanks, Brian

• Can't debug code using VS 2010 beta 2

  This is really strange and I can't seem to figure out why it won't work. I have a C# dll that is a add on for another program, the main program is not mine or a .Net app so I am starting it with Start external program in the debugging tab and and passing my program as a command line and the program starts and loads my add on however my Visual Studio debugger doesn't step into the debugger and won't hit my break points. I checked the module window and it's not even loaded in there, I used process explorer and had a look at main program and my dll was loaded into the main app. The project is set to debug, symbols to full and still nothing. I created the project in VS 2008 and it worked fine and am now trying to get this to work in VS 2010 and no go. Anyone know what could be causing this?

  I've read several articles that tell you how to add text to the output window in visual studio from within an Add-On (specifically, a visual studio 2008 integration package, via the visual studio 2008 SDK 1.1), but no examples of how to read text from the output window. My goal is to parse text from the debug output window while debugging a certain application (TRACE output and possibly stdin/stdout). The IVsOutputWindowPane interface has no methods for reading in text from the output window. The documentation seems to imply that it is possible, but it doesn't provide an example: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb166236(VS.80).aspx Quote: In addition, the OutputWindow and OutputWindowPane objects add some higher-level functionality to make it easier to enumerate the Output window panes and to retrieve text from the panes. • How to debug packet loss ?

  I wrote a C++ application (running on Linux) that serves an RTP stream of about 400 kbps. To most destinations this works fine, but some destinations expericence packet loss. The problematic destinations seem to have a slower connection in common, but it should be plenty fast enough for the stream I'm sending. Since these destinations are able to receive similar RTP streams for other applications without packet loss, my application might be at fault. I already verified a few things: - in a tcpdump, I see all RTP packets going out on the sending machine - there is a UDP send buffer in place (I tried sizes between 64KB and 300KB) - the RTP packets mostly stay below 1400 bytes to avoid fragmentation What can a sending application do to minimize the possibility of packet loss and what would be the best way to debug such a situation ?

• Cannot Debug Visual Basic 6 ActiveX Component On 64-bit OS

  Hi, The situation might sound a bit weird but I have to play with what I have. There's a Win2003 64-bit server OS and a legacy application written using Visual Studio 6. The app consists of two parts: ActiveX components written in VB6 and C++ code which uses them. I need to debug the components' code. I installed Visual Studio 6 on the server and I'm able to step into the component's code. Then I got following situation: 1) C++ code works until it needs to instantiate component A. 2) At this step we switch to VB6 and start debugging Component's A. 3) In the very beginning component A creates an instance of a class C exposed by component B. At this step VB6 debugger shows error message with title "OLEDB32.DLL" and following text: "Failed to load resource DLL C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\OLEDB32R.DLL" Additional information: The last step in initialization of the class C is opening an ADO connection to SQL server using OLEDB provider. I'd appreciate any ideas on how resolve this problem. Thanks in advance.
