  • Which Java web frameworks provide hot-reload?

    - by Stefane Fermigier
    I'd like to know which Java web application frameworks do provide a "hot reload" capability, i.e. allow to develop applications and have them redeployed on the server "almost instantly" (i.e. in less than a few seconds). I the Java world, Play! has it out of the box, but what I'm looking for is a more exhaustive list. Other examples that I'm aware of include: Nuxeo WebEngine, provided you're using Eclipse and the right plugin, or, in the Python world, Django and Pylons (when using the "--reload" option).

  • How Java Runtime Maps to Targets

    - by zharvey
    According to the Javadocs for Runtime here: Every Java application has a single instance of class Runtime that allows the application to interface with the environment in which the application is running. The current runtime can be obtained from the getRuntime method. An application cannot create its own instance of this class. My question is: what's their definition of an application? Is each JAR/WAR/EAR considered a standalone application? What about a plain ole' Driver.class class with a main() method? What about JEE containers that house EARs and EJBs? I guess I'm trying to understand how many Runtime instances could be up and running inside a complex (JEE) system. And understanding that requires me to understand what specific "things" constitute an "application" in Java terminology. Thanks in advance!

  • Subtracting Delphi Time Ranges from a Date Range, Calculate Remaining Time

    - by Anagoge
    I'm looking for an algorithm that will help calculate a workday working time length. It would have an input date range and then allow subtracting partially or completely intersecting time range slices from that date range and the result would be the number of minutes (or the fraction/multiple of a day) left in the original date range, after subtracting out the various non-working time slices. For Example: Input date range: 1/4/2010 11:21 am - 1/5/2010 3:00 pm Subtract out any partially or completely intersecting slices like this: Remove all day Sunday Non-Sundays remove 11:00 - 12:00 Non-Sundays remove time after 5:00 pm Non-Sundays remove time before 8:00 am Non-Sundays remove time 9:15 - 9:30 am Output: # of minutes left in the input date range I don't need anything overly-general. I could hardcode the rules to simplify the code. If anyone knows of sample code or a library/function somewhere, or has some pseudo-code ideas, I'd love something to start with. I didn't see anything in DateUtils, for example. Even a basic function that calculates the number of minutes of overlap in two date ranges to subtract out would be a good start.

  • Wordpress Events List Date Problem

    - by Roger
    Hi, I'm having a problem displaying events in the correct order in wordpress. I think the problem is because wordpress is treating the date as a string and ordering it by the day because it's in british date format. The goal is to display a list of future events with the most current event at the top of the list. But I must use the british date format of dd/mm/yyyy. Do I need to go back to the drawing board or is there a way of converting the date to achieve the result I need? Thanks in advance :) <ul> <?php // Get today's date in the right format $todaysDate = date('d/m/Y');?> <?php query_posts('showposts=50&category_name=Training&meta_key=date&meta_compare=>=&meta_value=' . $todaysDate . '&orderby=meta_value&order=ASC'); ?> <?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <li> <h3><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"> <?php the_title(); ?> </a></h3> <?php $getDate = get_post_meta($post->ID, 'date', TRUE); $dateArray = explode('/', $getDate); ?> <?php if($getDate != '') { ?> <div class="coursedate rounded"><?php echo date('d F Y', mktime(0, 0, 0, $dateArray[1], $dateArray[0], $dateArray[2])); ?></div> <?php } ?> <p><?php get_clean_excerpt(140, get_the_content()); ?>...</p> <p><strong><a class="link" href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>">For further details and booking click here</a></strong></p> </li> <?php endwhile; ?> <?php else : ?> <li>Sorry, no upcoming events!</li> <?php endif; ?>

  • Create lags with a for-loop in R

    - by cptn
    I've got a data.frame with stock data of several companies (here it's only two). I want 10 additional columns in my stock data.frame df with lagged dates (from -5 days to +5 days) for both companies in my event data.frame. I'm using a for loop which is probably not the best solution, but it works partially. DATE <- c("01.01.2000","02.01.2000","03.01.2000","06.01.2000","07.01.2000","09.01.2000","10.01.2000","01.01.2000","02.01.2000","04.01.2000","06.01.2000","07.01.2000","09.01.2000","10.01.2000") RET <- c(-2.0,1.1,3,1.4,-0.2, 0.6, 0.1, -0.21, -1.2, 0.9, 0.3, -0.1,0.3,-0.12) COMP <- c("A","A","A","A","A","A","A","B","B","B","B","B","B","B") df <- data.frame(DATE, RET, COMP, stringsAsFactors=F) df # DATE RET COMP # 1 01.01.2000 -2.00 A # 2 02.01.2000 1.10 A # 3 03.01.2000 3.00 A # 4 06.01.2000 1.40 A # 5 07.01.2000 -0.20 A # 6 09.01.2000 0.60 A # 7 10.01.2000 0.10 A # 8 01.01.2000 -0.21 B # 9 02.01.2000 -1.20 B # 10 04.01.2000 0.90 B # 11 06.01.2000 0.30 B # 12 07.01.2000 -0.10 B # 13 09.01.2000 0.30 B # 14 10.01.2000 -0.12 B this loop works fine comp <- as.vector(unique(df$COMP)) mylist <- vector('list', length(comp)) # create lags in DATE for(i in 1:length(comp)) { print(i) comp_i <- comp[i] df_k <- df[df$COMP %in% comp_i, ] # all trading days of one firm df_k <- transform(df_k, DATEm1 = c(NA, head(DATE, -1)), DATEm2 = c(NA, NA, head(DATE, -2)), DATEm3 = c(NA, NA, NA, head(DATE, -3)), DATEm4 = c(NA, NA, NA, NA,head(DATE, -4)), DATEm5 = c(NA, NA, NA, NA, NA, head(DATE, -5)), DATEp1 = c(DATE[-1], NA)) #DATEp2 = c(DATE[-2], NA, NA), #DATEp3 = c(DATE[-3], NA, NA, NA), #DATEp4 = c(DATE[-4], NA, NA, NA, NA), #DATEp5 = c(DATE[-5], NA, NA, NA, NA, NA)) mylist[[i]] = df_k } df1 <- do.call(rbind, mylist) But if I add the lines with DATEp2, DATEp3, DATEp4, DATEp5. the code doesn't work. Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Here the code with all the lagged dates. # create lags in DATE for(i in 1:length(comp)) { print(i) comp_i <- comp[i] df_k <- df[df$COMP %in% comp_i, ] # all trading days of one firm df_k <- transform(df_k, DATEm1 = c(NA, head(DATE, -1)), DATEm2 = c(NA, NA, head(DATE, -2)), DATEm3 = c(NA, NA, NA, head(DATE, -3)), DATEm4 = c(NA, NA, NA, NA,head(DATE, -4)), DATEm5 = c(NA, NA, NA, NA, NA, head(DATE, -5)), DATEp1 = c(DATE[-1], NA), DATEp2 = c(DATE[-2], NA, NA), DATEp3 = c(DATE[-3], NA, NA, NA), DATEp4 = c(DATE[-4], NA, NA, NA, NA), DATEp5 = c(DATE[-5], NA, NA, NA, NA, NA)) mylist[[i]] = df_k } df1 <- do.call(rbind, mylist)

  • How to repair Java in Ubuntu after trying to switch to Java 6 using update-java-alternatives

    - by Kau-Boy
    I tried to switch from Java 5 to Java 6 using the "update-java-alternatives" command like explained on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java But afterwards I get the following error when I tried to execute java: root@webserver:~# java Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. I also tried to reinstall the java binaries using "apt-get" but I didn't succeed reinstalling it. • Is the offical Sun Java EE tutorial the best way to learn how to make Java web apps?

    - by Nick
    I've been a web developer for almost a decade. I've mostly used classic ASP/JavaScript and I'd like to move into Java based apps. I have a decent understanding of Java itself (enough to know how to lookup what I don't know) and I spent some time doing minor work on a JSF/Spring/Hibernate app, but from what a trusted coworker told me, this application is the example of what not to do. I want to learn the really hardcore stuff (EJBs, HA Clustering, etc), but I know I have to walk before I can run. Is the Sun Tutorial the best place to start? Or is there an definitive book (like K&R for C or Gang of Four for design patterns) that I should buy?

  • Java EE Module Dependencies in web project?

    - by Sled
    Hey guys, I have this webprojec to which I have to add a jar from another EJB project. Normally I'd right-click the webproject and go to properties - Java EE Module Dependencies. I don't know if it is because I upgraded eclipse, or i'm doing something wrong, but I just can't find the "Java EE Module Dependencies" in the properties window. Both projects are linked with the same EAR so the EJB jar file shuld be there! Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or some other way I could attach the EJB's JAR file? I'm only allowed to work with eclipse, so netbeans is not an option. Thanks! EDIT: basically, this is what I want to do, but that specific panel won't show up...

  • Java2D: if statement doesn`t work with java.awt.Color

    - by DarkSun
    I have a getPixelColour function: Color getPixelColor(int x, int y) { if(mazeImage == null) System.out.println(":("); int pixel = mazeImage.getRGB(x, y); int red = (pixel & 0x00ff0000) >> 16; int green = (pixel & 0x0000ff00) >> 8; int blue = pixel & 0x000000ff; return new Color(red,green,blue); } For example a pixel is black, and System.out.println(getPixelColor(x,y) + " " + Color.BLACK); writes "java.awt.Color[r=0,g=0,b=0] java.awt.Color[r=0,g=0,b=0]" But getPixelColor(x,y) == Color.BLACK return false. What's wrong with it?

  • Date or String declaration in a javabean

    - by Jeff
    Should I declare an attribute in a javabean that holds a date value a user types in on an HTML form as a String or Date? I feel I should declare as a Date, however, since I do server validation on all form data, if the date doesn't validate, when I pass the form bean back to the jsp view for correcting, I lose the date value that the user tried to type in. If I declare as a String, if the date doesn't validate, I'm able to set the string value in the bean and pass the bean back to the view and the user can see what they incorrectly typed. But with a String declaration for Date inputs I forsee problems down the road with my DAO. I want to be able to use a DAO utility which generates a prepare statement using setObject. In my html form I request dates to be mm/dd/yyyy and in DAO i'm using Oracle Date. I can not use hibernate or such, since this is a corporate intranet. What is the best practice "pattern" I should be following??

  • How to distinguish date at midnight from date w/o time in Oracle?

    - by Swiety
    I would like to distinguish date at midnight (i.e. '12/05/2010 00:00:00') from date without time specified (i.e. '12/05/2010'). This value is provided by user, sometimes it is only date which is important, sometimes it is date and time and later the application is expected to show the time only when it was explicitly provided. So for the following inputs I would expect the following outputs: for '12/05/2010' I would expect '12/05/2010' for '12/05/2010 09:23' I would expect '12/05/2010 09:23' for '12/05/2010 00:00' I would expect '12/05/2010 00:00' I know I can model it in two separate columns, date and time, but I was wondering was there any way of handling this in single date column?

    - by rogie
    Good day to all; I'm developing a program using JSF2 and JPA2 (OpenJPA). Im also using IBM Rapid App Dev't v8 with WebSphere App Server v8 test server. I have two simple entities, Employee and Department. Each Department has many Employees and each Employee belongs to a Department (using deptno and workdept). My problem occurs when i tried to add a new employee and selecting a department from a combo box (using selectOneMenu - populated from Department table): when i run the program, the following error messages appeared: An Error Occurred: java.lang.NullPointerException Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException - java.lang.NullPointerException I also tried to make another program using Deptno and Workdept as String instead of integer, still doesn't work. I am new to web development. Initially i thought i would be learning LAMP or WAMP to acquire web developement skills but recently i came across Standard Java based (JSP, servlets) and Non standard Java based (GWT). My question is related to if and how LAMP can be compared with Java (standarad or non stadard) technologies. Is LAMP even comparable to Java based tech or it does something else or something more or less ? what requirement for a web developement projects require the choice that which of these 'technologies' should be choosen ? • New to Java and Spring. What are some good design principles for an inexperienced java developer like me?

    - by Imtiaz Ahmad
    I am learning Java and have written a few small useful programs. I am new to spring but have managed to understand the concept of dependency injection for decoupling. I'm trying to applying that in my development work in an enterprise setting. What are the 3 most important design patterns I should master (not for interview purposes but ones that I will use every day in as a good java developer)? Also what are some good java design considerations and practices in coding specifically in Java? My goal is write good decoupled and coherent programs that are easy to maintain that don't make me standout as a java rookie. Stuff like not beginning my package names with com. have already made me precariously visible in my team. But they know I have 2 years of coding experience and its not in java.

  • exact answer for “what is j2ee?” - job interview

    - by shuuchan
    I'd like to ask if someone of you knows the exact meaning of JEE. That's because a collegue of mine was asked this question in a job interview, and was "unable to answer properly"... to speak with his interwiewer's words. And when he told me what he said to his interviewer I got really surprised, since it was more or less what I would have answered myself - in a concise form, the first paragraph of this article. J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) is a Java platform designed for the mainframe-scale computing typical of large enterprises. Sun Microsystems (together with industry partners such as IBM) designed J2EE to simplify application development in a thin client tiered environment. J2EE simplifies application development and decreases the need for programming and programmer training by creating standardized, reusable modular components and by enabling the tier to handle many aspects of programming automatically. That seems not to be enough, since the interviewer asked for "more precise and less general definition". Is there really a more precise definition for JEE? Or did my colleague just find the fussiest-interviewer-ever? :)

  • June 2012 Critical Patch Update for Java SE Released

    - by Eric P. Maurice
    Hi, this is Eric Maurice. Oracle just released the June 2012 Critical Patch Update for Java SE.  This Critical Patch Update provides 14 new security fixes across Java SE products.  As discussed in previous blog entries, Critical Patch Updates for Java SE will, for the foreseeable future, continue to be released on a separate schedule than that of other Oracle products due to previous commitments made to Java customers.  12 of the 14 Java SE vulnerabilities fixed in this Critical Patch Update may be remotely exploitable without authentication.  6 of these vulnerabilities have a CVSS Base Score of 10.0.  In accordance with Oracle’s policies, these CVSS 10 scores represent instances where a user running a Java applet or Java Web Start application has administrator privileges (as is typical on Windows XP).  When the user does not run with administrator privileges (typical on the Solaris and Linux operating systems), the corresponding CVSS impact scores for Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability for these vulnerabilities would be "Partial" instead of "Complete", thus lowering these CVSS Base Scores to 7.5. Due to the high severity of these vulnerabilities, Oracle recommends that customers obtain and apply these security fixes as soon as possible: Developers should download the latest release at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html    Java users should download the latest release of JRE at http://java.com, and of course  Windows users can take advantage of the Java Automatic Update to get the latest release. In addition, Oracle recommends removing old an unused versions  of Java as the latest version is always the recommended version as it contains the most recent enhancements, and bug and security fixes.  For more information: •Instructions on removing older (and less secure) versions of Java can be found at http://java.com/en/download/faq/remove_olderversions.xml  •Users can verify that they’re running the most recent version of Java by visiting: http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp   •The Advisory for the June 2012 Critical Patch Update for Java SE is located at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/javacpujun2012-1515912.html

  • Java EE@NYC Java Meetup

    - by reza_rahman
    On November 19th, I spoke at the New York City Java Meetup Group. It's a well-organized group led by my good friends Dario Laverde and Timothy Fagan - I have spoken there numerous times. I did my Java EE 7 talk (the same one from Java2Days 2012). JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond from reza_rahman The talk went very well -- the official RSVP shows 163 attended. I gave away a few GlassFish T-shirts, laptop stickers and Arun Gupta's Java EE 6 pocket guide. More details on the talk here. I most certainly look forward to speaking there again.

  • how can i disable the default console handler, while using the java logging api ?

    - by loudiyimo
    Hi I am trying to implement the java logging in my application. I want to use two handlers. A file handler and my own console handler. Both of my handlers work fine. My logging is send to a file and to the console . My logging is also sent to the default console handler, which i do not want. If you run my code you will see extra two line sent to the console. I don't want to use de default console handler. Does anyone know how to disable the default console handler. I only want to use the two hadlers i have created. Handler fh = new FileHandler("test.txt"); fh.setFormatter(formatter); logger.addHandler(fh); Handler ch = new ConsoleHandler(); ch.setFormatter(formatter); logger.addHandler(ch); import java.util.Date; import java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler; import java.util.logging.FileHandler; import java.util.logging.Formatter; import java.util.logging.Handler; import java.util.logging.Level; import java.util.logging.LogManager; import java.util.logging.LogRecord; import java.util.logging.Logger; public class LoggingExample { private static Logger logger = Logger.getLogger("test"); static { try { logger.setLevel(Level.INFO); Formatter formatter = new Formatter() { @Override public String format(LogRecord arg0) { StringBuilder b = new StringBuilder(); b.append(new Date()); b.append(" "); b.append(arg0.getSourceClassName()); b.append(" "); b.append(arg0.getSourceMethodName()); b.append(" "); b.append(arg0.getLevel()); b.append(" "); b.append(arg0.getMessage()); b.append(System.getProperty("line.separator")); return b.toString(); } }; Handler fh = new FileHandler("test.txt"); fh.setFormatter(formatter); logger.addHandler(fh); Handler ch = new ConsoleHandler(); ch.setFormatter(formatter); logger.addHandler(ch); LogManager lm = LogManager.getLogManager(); lm.addLogger(logger); } catch (Throwable e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } public static void main(String[] args) { logger.info("why does my test application use the standard console logger ?\n" + " I want only my console handler (Handler ch)\n " + "how can i turn the standard logger to the console off. ??"); } }

  • Linux configurations that would affect Java memory usage?

    - by wmacura
    Hi, Background: I have a set of java background workers I start as part of my webapp. I develop locally on Ubuntu 10.10 and deploy to an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server (a media temple (ve) instance). They're both running the same JVM: Sun JVM 1.6.0_22-b04. As part of the initialization script each worker is started with explicit Xmx, Xms, and XX:MaxPermGen settings. Yet somehow locally all 10 workers use 250MB, while on the server they use more than 2.7GB. I don't know how to begin to track this down. I thought the Ubuntu (and thus, kernel) version might make a difference, but I tried an old 10.04 VM and it behaves as expected. I've noticed that the machine does not seem to ever use memory for buffer or cache (according to htop), which seems a bit strange, but perhaps normal for a server? (edited) Some info: (server) root@devel:/app/axir/target# uname -a Linux devel 2.6.18-028stab069.5 #1 SMP Tue May 18 17:26:16 MSD 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux (local) wiktor@beastie:~$ uname -a Linux beastie 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux (edited) Comparing PS output: (ps -eo "ppid,pid,cmd,rss,sz,vsz") PPID PID CMD RSS SZ VSZ (local) 1588 1615 java -cp axir-distribution. 25484 234382 937528 1615 1631 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 83472 163059 652236 1615 1657 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 70624 89135 356540 1615 1658 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 37652 77625 310500 1615 1669 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 38096 77733 310932 1615 1675 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 37420 61395 245580 1615 1684 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 38000 77736 310944 1615 1703 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 39180 78060 312240 1615 1712 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 38488 93882 375528 1615 1719 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 38312 77874 311496 1615 1726 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 38656 77958 311832 1615 1727 java -cp /home/wiktor/Code/ 78016 89429 357716 (server) 22522 23560 java -cp axir-distribution. 24860 285196 1140784 23560 23585 java -cp /app/axir/target/a 100764 161629 646516 23560 23667 java -cp /app/axir/target/a 72408 92682 370728 23560 23670 java -cp /app/axir/target/a 39948 97671 390684 23560 23674 java -cp /app/axir/target/a 40140 81586 326344 23560 23739 java -cp /app/axir/target/a 39688 81542 326168 They look very similar. In fact, the question now is why, if I add up the virtual memory usage on the server (3.2GB) does it more closely reflect 2.4GB of memory used (according to free), yet locally the virtual memory used adds up to a much more substantial 4.7GB but only actually uses ~250MB. It seems that perhaps memory isn't being shared as aggressively. (if that's even possible) Thank you for your help, Wiktor
