• What classes are useful for an aspiring software developer? [closed]

  I'm a freshman in college trying to graduate in 3 years with a Math/CS dual major, and I don't have a lot of time to be fooling around with useless classes. I've tested out of most of my gen eds and science-y courses, but I need to know: what math and cs courses are most important for someone interested in algorithm development? Math courses already taken: Calc I-III,Linear Algebra, Discrete Math. CS courses taken: Java. Math courses I'm planning to take: ODE, Linear Algebra II, Vector calc, Logic, (Analysis or Algebra), Stats, probability CS courses I'm planning to take: C(required), Data Structures, Numerical Methods, Intro to Analysis of Algorithms. Which is better, analysis or algebra? Did I take enough CS courses? Am I missing out on anything? Thanks.

• Immutable design with an ORM: How are sessions managed?

  If I were to make a site with a mutable language like C# and use NHibernate, I would normally approach sessions with the idea of making them as create only when needed and dispose at request end. This has helped with keeping a session for multiple transactions by a user but keep it from staying open too long where the state might be corrupted. In an immutable system, like F#, I would think I shouldn't do this because it supposes that a single session could be updated constantly by any number of inserts/updates/deletes/ect... I'm not against the "using" solution since I would think that connecting pooling will help cut down on the cost of connecting every time, but I don't know if all database systems do connection pooling. It just seems like there should be a better way that doesn't compromise the immutability goal. Should I just do a simple "using" block per transaction or is there a better pattern for this?

  I feel like anything that can be developed using OO/functional languages can be generally made 'better' using a prototype based language, because they appaer to have the best of them all: high order functions, flexibility to simulate any OO structure, productivity (low verbosity) and scalability because of concurrency. But it seems like they are avoided for the creation of executable applications and of bigger projects in general. Why that?

• How do you QA and release software quickly with a large team?

  My work used to be a smaller team. We had less than 13 devs for a while. We are now growing rapidly, and are over 20 with plans to be over 30 in a few months. Our process for QA'ing and releasing each build is no longer working. We currently have everyone develop the new code, and stick it onto a staging environment. A few days before our weekly release, we would freeze the staging environment and QA everything. By our normal release time, everything was usually deemed acceptable and pushed out the door to the main site. We reached a point where our code got too big so we could no longer regress the entire site each week in QA. We were ok with that, we just made a list of everything important and only covered that and the new stuff. Now we are reaching a point where all the new stuff each week is becoming too big and too unstable. Our staging environment is really buggy week after week, and we are usually 1-2 hours behind the normal release time. As the team is growing further, we are going to drown with this same process. We are re-evaluating everything, and I personally am looking for suggestions / success stories. Many companies have been where before and progressed beyond, we need to do the same

• Can software company claim the intellectual property rights on my paintings?

  This is somewhat related to this question. I'm about to sign a contract with a company that this sort of "all your base are belong to us" clause in it: it says that all programs, designs, sketches, drawings I create in relation to my job belong to the company. More or less usual stuff (unfortunately). What worries me, however, is this "drawings, sketches" thing, because I'm a hobby-artist and I paint and draw at my spare time. Can the company somehow claim ownership of intellectual rights on this work? Should I ask them to explicitly state that this clause does not extend to work of art or is this "in relation to the job" part is good enough?

  I work for a reasonably large tech company in Boston, MA. My company has about 1.2 billion in revenue and around 3500 employees. I have 6 years of industry experience and my current pay package is as follows: Base salary: 97,000 bonus: 10,000/year (everyone always gets 100% of this... i don't know why they bother call it bonus) RSU stock: 8000/year at present day valuation. My vesting schedule covers me for the next 5 years. that brings my total pay to ~ 115,000/year Given that, would folks say I am under/average/over paid? I read so much about how engineers at google and facebook are making ridiculous sums of money (almost 200k with bonuses included) and it makes me question my pay package. thanks

  What are relative merits of something like a button on a piece of custom bizware that says, "press me to ask for a feature" or "click here if something didn't work right". The problem I'm trying to remedy is the general lack of formality surrounding feature requests. Most specifically, the rate at which I receive walk-ups from end-users. Taken one at a time, it can be beneficial, but sometimes it can hinder productivity on the larger scale.   I am looking at a new position with a new company. I have talked to some people in the past (in general, not at this company) that they had been given a yearly budget to buy new computer stuff to keep up to date. Now why I feel this question is worth asking here is that Joel comes right out and says an employer should pay for the best equipment money can buy... within reason of course. From The Joel Test: 12 Steps to Better Code 9. Do you use the best tools money can buy? Writing code in a compiled language is one of the last things that still can't be done instantly on a garden variety home computer... Top notch development teams don't torture their programmers. Even minor frustrations caused by using underpowered tools add up, making programmers grumpy and unhappy. And a grumpy programmer is an unproductive programmer... Does anyone know if the industry has such a standard to offer an allowance or budget? I have never worked for a company like this, but I am thinking I should toss this in the ring for negotiations. Seems reasonable. How do bigger companies like MS, Google, and Apple handle this? If you say yes, give a range... I have been told numbers from $5k to $10k. Seems high to me, but hey I would gladly take it.

• Is this a legitimate registry key? (windows 7)

  In hkey_local_machine/software/classes I found some registry keys named msime.taiwan, msime.japan and a couple others with similar names, except with a number at the end of, so there was 4 keys altogether. From what I know itmcoulc be associated with a thing in windows that lets you write japanese characters or whatever. I also found a macaffee page, , which seemed dated but it said the key is created by a virus named w32 virut. Just wondering is this a legit key? I found it on another pc and both pcs show when exported to a .txt show it was last written to in 2009. Here is the reg query for the 4 keys. (added lines to differentiate them.) • How do I prevent software packages from being downloaded until I know it's safe?

  Recently, an update that caused a problem with Gnome session caused me to lose a day's work. The solution was to rollback some packages to a previous version. The update manager is now telling me that my old packages should be updated: ... but I don't want to do that until I know that whatever bug or problem the latest version has is resolved. I understand that with any upgrade that there is a risk of instability. However, in the 8 years or more that I've been on Ubuntu, using the latest releases has been stable enough and with the benefit of the latest features and security. So, I'm not looking for general advice on how to handle upgrades. What I'm saying is that in this one particular instance, the bug introduced by these upgrades is severe and time wasting. But, as an end user, when I encounter a problem like this, I have no idea how to address a specific concern about a specific package. I don't, for example, know which of these packages is the problem, and I can't take time from my work schedule to be experimenting with each package. So, my question is: How do I find out who exactly is responsible for these, or any, packages so that I can contact them and let them know about the problem? • Will I be able to get programming interviews at good software companies with a non-CS degree?

  I'll be graduating in a year, but I'll have a degree in Economics. I'm pretty much done with my Economics coursework, and by the time next year comes around I will have devoted 1.5 years to learning CS. I will have almost finished the requirements to graduate with a degree in CS, but unfortunately my school requires a science series that would add another 6-9 months of study if I were to try and get the degree (not to mention a max unit cap). I have or will have taken: Objected Oriented Programming Discrete Math Data structures Calculus through multivariable (doubt this matters at all) Linear Algebra (same) Computer Organization Operating Systems Computational Statistics (many data mining projects in R) Parallel Programming Programming Languages Databases Algorithms Compilers Artificial Intelligence I've done well in the ones I've taken, and I hope to do well in the rest, but will that matter if I can't say to the HR people that I have a CS degree? I'd be happy to get an internship at first too, so should I just apply as if I'm an intern and not looking for fulltime, and then try and parlay that into something? Sidenote if you have time -- Is a computer networks or theory of computation class important? Would it be worth taking either of those in lieu of a class on my list? edit -- I know this isn't AskReddit or College Confidential; I know there will be some outrage at posting a question like this. I'm merely looking for insight into a situation that I've been struggling with, and I think this is the absolute best place to find an answer to this question. Thanks.

  I am developing a game that has a lot of platform generic pieces. I am wanting to separate out various pieces into static libraries and I would like to know what other devs do. I am considering targeting other platforms and I want to maintain an much platform neutrality as I can. I have a lot of generic level data in C++ classes. THinking all of the level data could go into a single static library. I have a lot of generic OpenGL code that I think could also go into a single static library. I am already using CMAKE for some and XCode 4.5 for the Apple specific pieces. What do other devs do to stay platform neutral? Does anyone use Eclipse instead of XCode and Visual Studio on Windows?

  Possible Duplicate: How to list all installed packages? I am on a "grown" system. My initial setup was using Ubuntu 9.04. But now with the 12.04 Update I got stuck. My System is freezing or wired errors occour. I want to reinstall my system on a clean partition. How can I get a list of the packages I installed in my system? I want a list with the base packages not all the dependecies, so I can install all packages on my clean install again with the correct (maybe new) dependencies. I other words: I want to retrieve a list of all packages installed with apt-get directly. Not the ones it additionally installs with these packages. Thanks!

• Bridging the gap between learning language fundamentals and actually making useful software?

  I'm learning C# via the "Essential C#" Lynda.com video tutorials and plan to read a couple of books that cover things in more depth afterwards. My question is where I should head to learn more after that? I've done things like project Euler in the past, but I find they don't really help me learn anything other than basic program control flow and features. I've looked at many open-source projects but pretty much everything still looks overwhelmingly complicated at this stage. What would you recommend I look at to help me build useful applications that are a bit beyond the millions of console applications I must've written thus-far? Should I be looking at books specifically on learning/working with the .NET framework, or just biting my lip and continue working through open source projects until they start to make sense?

  Possible Duplicate: How to create Windows XP LiveUSB using Ubuntu to replace it Since many programs that I need only work on XP, I need to install Windows XP on my 2 laptops but I can't use an optical drive, which makes using a USB the only option. If it helps, I can tell you that I used to have Vista and Windows 7 on my 2 laptops but I clean installed Ubuntu 12.04 on one, and Lubuntu on the other. Also I have no trace of Windows left on any of my laptops, when I bought my laptops they came without a Windows CD, so I only had a 20GB partition on my hard drives (which I formatted when I clean installed Ubuntu and Lubuntu.) Also, I have no problem with clean installing Windows XP and the reinstalling Ubuntu/Lubuntu so I can dual boot. Thanks! Edit: I have a ISO file ready, on a USB.
