  • How do I integrate a new MVC C# Project with an existing Web Forms VB.NET Web Application Project?

    We have a corporate website with a large amount of dynamic business application pages (e.g. Shopping Cart, Helpdesk, Product/Service management, Reporting, etc.) The site was built as an ASP.Net Web Application Project (WAP). Our systems have evolved over the years to use .NET 4.5 and various custom business logic DLLs (written in a mix of C# and VB.NET). However, the site itself is still using VB.NET Web Forms. We now have done a few side projects in MVC 4 using Razor/C#, and we want to use this framework for new pages on the main corporate site going forward. What would be the easiest way to achieve this? I found this nice list of steps to integrate MVC 4 into an existing Web Forms app. The problem is that because our existing app is a VB.NET WAP, it compiles into a single DLL, and .NET allows only one language per DLL. The site is way too big for us to contemplate converting it to C# all at once (yes, I've looked at the conversion tools, and they're good, but even 99% accuracy would leave us a huge amount of cleanup work.) I thought about converting the existing WAP into a Web Site Project (WSP) which does allow mixing languages and then following the steps above, but after a few pages of Google results, I couldn't find any steps for converting a WAP to WSP. (Plenty of sites offer the reverse steps: converting a WSP to a WAP.) Another idea I had was to create a completely separate MVC project, and then somehow squish them together into the same folder structure, where they would share the bin folder but compile to separate DLL's. I have no idea if this is possible, because certain files would collide (e.g. Global.asax, web.config, etc.) Finally, I can imagine a compromise solution where we keep all the MVC stuff in its own separate application under a subfolder of the main solution. We already use our own custom session state solution, so it wouldn't be difficult to pass data between the old site to the new pages. Which of the ideas above do you think makes the most sense for us? Is there another solution that I'm missing?

  • How can I get black window borders in Windows 8?

    In Windows 8, when I go into Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization\Window Color and Appearance the amount of control over window colors is greatly reduced as compared to Windows 7. The color controls do not allow you to make Window borders display in black. Is there some other way to set the window border color in Windows 8? Edit 1: Clearly the standard way does not work in Windows 8. The question is, is there another way? Perhaps through the registry for example? Edit 2: I tried copying the values in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM from my Win7 system to the Win8 system without success (killing the 2 DWM processes after each change - they are automatically restarted and do use the new values).

    My university bought new big led display from chinese manufacturers. What I want to do is, show some visualizations (like Windows Media Player, Winamp, Itunes ... does) with music. I'd just drag the application window to show on screen But main problem is,The software that controls it (called "Led Vision") doesn't support showing applications' windows: It shows limited types of the files, such as, powerpoint presentation, video files, picture files.. etc. Now the question is, where I can find the visualization video files? something that created in After Effects, looks like that:

  • AS3 - Tile image/movieclip along a line

    If possible I would like to tile an image or MovieClip along a line using the standard moveTo() and lineTo() methods, The lines are directional so need to show something similar to >>>>>>>>>>>>>. The lines can be at any angle, so using drawRect() with beginBitmapFill() isn't an option. Also if possible I would like to have the lines animated. Is this possible or will it require a custom class?

  • Create Virtual Image of Laptop before Formatting

    I have a 3 year old laptop running Windows XP that I used for business. Although I have not used the laptop in over a year, I now want to re-commission it with Windows 7 and a fresh install. Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.

  • Composite Views and View Controllers

    Hi, I'm somewhat new to Android and am in the process of designing an application with a couple fairly complex views. One of the views is intended to involve a complex view displaying information associated with model objects and segregated into several different views; the navigation of which is meant to be achieved using sliding effects (i.e. sliding one's finger across the screen to traverse from one screen to the next, etc). The view itself will be used to host multiple sets of views for varying types of model objects, but with a general structure that is reused between them all. As a rough example, the view might come up to display information about a person (the model object), displaying several details views: a view for general information, a view displaying a list of hobbies, and a view displaying a list of other individuals associated with their social network. The same general view, when given a model object representing a particular car would give several different views: A general view with details, A view containing photo images for that vehicle, a view representing locations which it could be purchased from, and a view providing a list of related cars. (NOTE: This is not the real data involved, but is representative of the general intent for the view). The subviews will NOT cover the entire screen real-estate and other features within the view should be both visible and able to be interacted with by the user. The idea here is that there is a general view structure that is reusable and which will manage a set of subviews dynamically generated based upon the type of model object handed to the view. I'm trying to determine the appropriate way to leverage the Android framework in order to best achieve this without violating the integrity of the framework. Basically, I'm trying to determine how to componentize this larger view into reusable units (i.e. general view, model-specific sub-view controllers, and individual detail views). To be more specific, I'm trying to determine if this view is best designed as a composite of several custom View classes or a composite of several Activity classes. I've seen several examples of custom composite views, but they typically are used to compose simple views without complex controllers and without attention to the general Activity lifecycle (i.e. storing and retrieving data related to the model objects, as appropriate). On the other hand, the only real example I've seen regarding a view comprised of a composite of Activities is the TabActivity itself, and that isn't customizable in the fashion that would be necessary for this. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the appropriate way to structure my view to achieve the application framework I'm looking for? Views? Activities? Something else? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi, I have in my Form constructor, after the InitializeComponent the following code: using (WebClient client = new WebClient()) { client.DownloadDataCompleted += new DownloadDataCompletedEventHandler(client_DownloadDataCompleted); client.DownloadDataAsync("http://example.com/version.txt"); } When I start my form, the UI doesn't appears till client_DownloadDataCompleted is raised.   • SQL Server 2008 and .Net 4.0?

    Does anyone konw whether I can load .net 4.0 assemblies from SQL Server 2008? In particular, we are looking at SQL Reporting, with Custom Data Extensions. I have noticed that hte SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence Studio does not seem to support VS2010 at the moment. If I release my CDE's as .net 4.0 assemblies, will I even be able to load them from within the SQL Server Reporting Server?

  • How to notify client about updated UpdatePanel content on server side

    I have a problem with UpdatePanel.Update() which works initially but then stops. I have tumbled with this problem for some time and some background is needed so please read ahead. I have an ASP.net application in which I have a subpage that display computed information in graphs. Each graph is embedded in an UpdatePanel. The graph is a user control that uses the standard asp:Chart for display. My task is to enable this page with AJAX capabilities so the page is responsive during postbacks. When I access this page from another page, during the initial page rendering, I use a wait dialog for each graph and a pageload event on the client side. In the client event, a hidden button is clicked which a server event handles (the hidden button is inside an UpdatePanel so the postback is asynchronous). Each graph is computed and the UpdatePanels are in turn updated with the Chart content. This is done using UpdatePanel.Update. And it is successful. However, I also have some RadioButtons on the page. These are dynamically created. The purpose of them is to switch graph type --- to show the same data in a different way. Same type of time consuming computation is needed in order to do so. I subscribe on each RadioButton's OnCheckedChanged event and the postback is asynchronous since the radiobuttons are inside an UpdatePanel. In the server event handler I determine the type of graph and use this as an input to the Chart control. I then remove the old Chart control from my Panel and adds new Chart and then I call UpdatePanel.Update(). But with no success. Nothing happens, no errors, nothing. Why is this?? I think this is strange because if I compute every Chart data in the initial rendering instead of using the "Wait dialog"-solution described earlier then I can select graph types successfully and all subsequent AJAX requests work as intended. Also, the same code (computing the chart, removal, and adding the Chart control to Panel and UpdatePanel.Update()) is hit during the initial rendering of the page, and it works only the first time. Here is the method that computes the graph and adds it to the panel and update the UpdatePanel: public void UpdateGraph(GraphType type, GraphMapper mapper) { //Panel is the content of UpdatePanelGraph's Panel.Controls.Clear(); chart = new Chart(type, mapper); //Computation happens inside here panel.Controls.Add(chart); //UpdatePanelGraph is in UpdateMode Conditional and has //ChildrenAsTriggers set to false UpdatePanelGraph.Update(); } I really need a way for these radiobuttons to work, possible using some clientside JavaScript or another way of handling things on the server side. I have thought about using a JavaScript postback call on the UpdatePanel instead of the UpdatePanel.Update(). However, the issue I have here is how to notify the client side when the server side is finished with computing the graph? An plausible explanation of the strange behavior is also much appreciated. I have custom sort implemented from this article, but sorting the same column twice in a row calls sorting function twice (which is slow), so just reversing the order should be faster and have the same effect.

    On a Windows 2008 R2, using DNS and IIS I've established my development test server; i.e. I'll have a web application that I can browse on http://test.dev I've moved all the static content files like images, js files and css files into another application which is visible on http://cdn.test.dev test.dev, uses cdn.test.dev urls like http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js to load js, css and images. When I first load "~/" of test.dev, all files will load with a response code of 200; when I press F5 in Firefox, all files, except the "~/default.aspx", will load with 304 response code; but pressing Ctrl+F5 loads them again with a 200 code; if I browse another url like "~/pages/" in test.dev, all of those static files will reload with a 200 code... Is this normal or I'm doing something wrong? Actually, I'm looking for a behavior like this: I want the client to load http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js, only once. I want the client's browser to use this jquery.js file, from cache, in all other pages of test.dev Is this possible?     Hi all, currently I'm assigning a TextWriter to the Log property of my Linq to Sql data context (per request instancing) and write this to my logging when an exception is thrown while executing a stored procedure (is strongly typed mapped in the context, so not executing a custom command) however when using ADO.NET we normally inspect the SqlCommand upon unhandled exception to read out the parameters and log them is it possible to access the SqlCommand that was used for executing a Stored Procedure in L2S so we can reuse that existing logging component? This would be far nicer than the current Log TextWriter solution.... greetings, Tim

  • Difficulty adding widgets to django form.

    I have a django app that tracks activities that can benefit a classroom. Using the django examples, I was able to build a form to enter this data. But when I try to add widgets to that form, things get tricky. What I want is a calendar widget that lets the user enter the 'activity_date' field using a widget. If I use Admin interface. The AdminDateWidget works fine. however. This particular user isn't allowed access to the admin interface so I need a different way to present this widget. Also I couldn't figure out how to make the bring the admin widget over into non-admin pages. So I tried a custom widget. This is the first custom widget I've built, so I'm not quite sure what is supposed to be going on here. Any Expert Advice?   • OK to throw an error for a missing required querystring parameter?

    Is there anything wrong with having an asp.net page throw a (custom error) if a a required querystring parameter is missing and having global.asax catch it with Application_Error, then transfer the user to an error page? I have several base classes that perform these checks and I am not sure of the best way to communicate the error to a user. So, something like this: int reqParam; if(!isParamSet("myReqParam", out reqParam)) { throw new QuerystringParamMissingException(); } which is then caught by Application_Error in global.asax.
