• Middle tier language for interfacing C/C++ with db and web app

  I have a web application requiring a middle-tier language to communicate between an oracle database and math routines on a Linux server and a flex-based application on a client. I'm not a software expert, and need recommendations for which language to use for the middle-tier. The math routines are currently in Matlab but will be ported to C (or C++) as shared libraries. Thus, by default there's some C or C++ communication necessary. These routines rely on FFTW (www.fftw.org), which is called directly from C or C++ (thus, I don't see re-writing these routines in another language). The middle tier must manage traffic between the client, the math routines, and the Oracle database. The client will trigger the math routines aynchronously, and the results saved in the db and transferred back to the client, etc. The middle-tier will also need to authenticate user accounts/passwords, and send out various administrative emails. Originally I thought PhP the obvious choice, but interfacing asychronously multiple clients with the C or C++ routines doesn't seem straightforward. Then I thought, why not just keep the whole middle tier in C or C++, but I'm not sure if this is done in the industry (C or C++ doesn't seem as web-friendly as other languages). There's always Jave + JNI, but maybe that introduces other complications (not sure). Any feedback appreciated.

New - How to Automate The Installation of Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.0 Thanks to the new image packaging architecture in Oracle Solaris 11, you can now automate the installation of Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.0. Why is that such a big deal? As Lucia Lai explains it: "Without the AI, you would have to manually install the cluster components on the cluster nodes, and then run the scinstall tool to add the nodes to the cluster. If, instead, you use the AI, both the Oracle Solaris 11 and the Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.0 packages are installed onto the cluster nodes directly from Image Packaging System (IPS) repositories, and the nodes are booted into a new cluster with minimum user intervention." • In what fields do programming and Business Sciences intersect? [on hold]

  One note of clarification: I'm getting a lot of comments saying that this question is too personal, too relative, subjective, and that career-path questions get quickly deleted. This is not a question about me or my career. This question is just what the title says: What fields exist that converge programming and business. Now the question: I read this answer regarding off-topic questions, and I was afraid this might be, so I'll try to keep it general and helpful for others. Also, this one has a similar background but formulates a different question from it. I have a Business Administration degree, but I've programmed since I can remember, and it's been my only job for years. However, my problem is the same that the majority of "amateuressional" programmers have: - Incomplete knowledge of the fundamentals. - Anxiety to keep up. - Feeling of not making anything useful of "the other degree". - Afraid of finally becoming a jack of all trades (master of none). Which further studies (specific degrees or fields) exist that allow a person with a BS degree converge into a programming career, without having to sacrifice coding, allowing to further expand the knowledge of C.S. fundamentals, and also without completely sacrificing the first?

• help with migrating from Widows, x64 FGLRX, CPU load, Java and Minecraft

  Im new to ubuntu, it is the second time i have installed it. This comp is Dell studio 1558. some specs: CPU- intel core i7 Q720 1.6GHz, GPU- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 FGLRX- i've fallowed these instructions among inspecting many others, i have tried all of the variants mentioned in that tread before reverting back to the drivers supplied with Ubuntu ( through additional drivers ) which apparently seem to work best. i am testing them with minecraft as silly as it may sound. in 2 to 60 minutes the FPS drop from 70+ to somewhere between 0 and 5. while "fgl_glxgears" runs at between 400 and 800 FPS smoothly.. I am using oracle ( sun ) JRE6 to run minecraft, i have gotten it through a tutorial linked on oracle's website, i currently have no other version of java installed ( was worse when i had a few others here ). after closing the game Ubuntu is similarly slow, i've checked the CPU load using System Monitor and it shows one of the CPU's jumping to 80%~100% load at a time.. a reboot solves it. i realize my mess is up to me to solve but a hand is always appreciated. tyvm in advance.

A simple example can be where stakeholders on the systems integration or customer teams want to monitor a dashboard of statistics on how many instances of a composite have been created and how many have faulted. • How do I install Photoshop CS2 in Wine w/ Creative Suite Installer?

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and wanted to install Photoshop CS2 in Wine (wine1.2). From what I've read, the Photoshop installer and application should both run fine. However, I don't have a specific installer for Photoshop. The setup program on the CD is for the entire Creative Suite 2 bundle. When I try to run it, I get through the splash screen, license agreement, and language selection screens, but when I click the button to start/customize the installation, the installer dies. The Photoshop CS 2 folder on the CD has two exe files, instmsia.exe and instmsiw.exe, and I tried those, hoping to find a stand-alone Photoshop installer, but neither work. I tried downloading a trial, but my license key is apparently for the entire bundle, because it didn't work. Does anyone know of a work-around for this or a way to make the Creative Suite installer work? I'm currently running Photoshop under a WinXP VM, but it would be nice to have the option of using it via Wine, so I don't have to boot the VM every time I want to edit an image (and also reading/writing to my Ubuntu shares is really slow in Virtualbox).   Hello All, I'm putting together a small start up company which will be set up with a subscription based billing model. The bill will go to customers on either a monthly or quarterly basis depending on the end user's preference. My question is two parted: I'm new to online billing and I'm only really aware of Pay Pal when it comes to third party bill payment, but this seems more like a check out system. I'm sure there are better alternatives than PayPal for third party billing processors (I have tried Googling for them, but I'm having trouble finding exactly what I'm looking for). What options (companies) are available for third party payment processing and what types of experiences (good or bad) have you had with them? We would like to give our customers the ability to set up recurring payments. I'd rather not store a customer's credit card number on our database as I imagine there are a plethora of compliance guidelines around this. Is there a third party solution for recurring payment processing? On a side note, this is not necessarily a code related question and is more business focused. I wasn't sure if there was a better route for posting this question, and please commont or modify this if there is another route I should take. Thanks!!

  Hi, My application accesses an Oracle database through Qt's QSqlDatabase class. I'm compiling Qt as static for the release build, but I can't seem to be able to get rid of OCI.dll dependency. I'm trying to link against oci.lib (as available in Oracle's Instant Client with SDK). Here's my configure line : configure -qt-libjpeg -qt-zlib -qt-libpng -nomake examples -nomake demos -no-exceptions -no-stl -no-rtti -no-qt3support -no-scripttools -no-openssl -no-opengl -no-phonon -no-style-motif -no-style-cde -no-style-cleanlooks -no-style-plastique -static -release -opensource -plugin-sql-oci -plugin-sql-sqlite -platform win32-msvc2005 I link against oci.h and oci.lib in the SDK's folder by using : set INCLUDE=C:\oracle\instantclient\sdk\include;%INCLUDE% set LIB=C:\oracle\instantclient\sdk\lib\msvc;%LIB% Then, once Qt is compiled, I use the following lines in my *.pro file : QT += sql CONFIG += static LIBS += C:\oracle\instantclient\sdk\lib\msvc\oci.lib QTPLUGIN += qsqloci Then, in my main.cpp, I add the following commands to statically compile OCI plugin in the application : #include <QtPlugin> Q_IMPORT_PLUGIN(qsqloci) After compiling the project, I test it on my workstation and it works (as I have Oracle Instant Client installed). When I try on another workstation, I always get the message: This application has failed to start because OCI.dll was not found. Re-installing this application may fix this problem. I don't understand why I still need OCI.dll, as my statically linked application is supposed to link to oci.lib instead. Is there any Qt people here that might have a solution for me ? Thanks a lot !   I am thinking of setting up my own freelance business but coming from a workplace that offers a particular service to huge clients, I do not know what are the current charges for websites are nowadays. I know that as technology just keeps changing and changing (most of the time, for the better...), the amount you charge for a single website is constantly differing. Like for example, I don't think static websites (with just static html pages) are that expensive today, no? (as i said, I might be mistaken since I haven't really touched on this freelance industry yet) So, freelance web-developers out there, can you give me estimates on how much you charge for your clients? Some examples of websites that I want to know an approx charge: ~10 static html pages ~10 dhtml pages (with maybe a flasy menu on the top/side) Database driven websites with a standard CMS (be it the one you developed, or an existing one) Database driven but with a custom-built cms for the particular client Using an existing template for a design Starting the design from scratch etc... I know that the normally clients don't really care about the technologies used to construct their websites, but do you charge differently according to which technology you use to build the website with?; as in, is the technology a factor when setting the price? ...being ASP.Net, PHP, Ruby On Rails etc... Also, how do you go on about charging your clients for your services? What are the major factors that you consider when setting a price tag for a website to a client ? And better yet, how do you even find prospective clients? <= [or should I leave this question for a different post?] Btw, in your post, also mention some numbers (in cash values, be it in USD, GBP, EUR or anything) because I want to be able to take calculate some averages from this post when some answers stack up

• Internet explorer 8 opens file in browser instead of the client

  Our company is working with a great Business Intelligence tool CorVu 4.2 to analyse the operational and strategic data. Since several years we are successfully working with Sharepoint 2007 to collaborate and share information with colleagues. Most of my colleagues are working with Internet Explorer 7, but step by step Internet Explorer 8 is implemented in the company. We share a lot of CorVu files thought Sharepoint, but since we are using Internet Explorer 8, we have a problem that is new for us. If we click on a CorVu file in Internet Explorer 8 (not necessarily in Sharepoint) a pop-up shows how to open the file, if we save the file, there is no problem. But if we open the file, the file is shown in the browser and not in the CorVu client! See the screenshot below: link (I removed some unnecessary information) So far my colleagues accept this 'feature' in Internet Explorer 8. But I we open and closes more CorVu files, multiple errors (more than 10) show up starting with: (unable to place more hyperlinks) By pressing Enter the errors disappear, but it's not professional! I contacted the creators of CorVu, but they don't have a solution for in their client. There may be a solution in Internet Explorer 8? The extensions of a CorVu file can be a .sqy, .tab or .qrp. But is it possible to force the files to open in the standard client instead of the browser?
