• embed dll in html <object>

  I've come across some old code <object id="foo" classid="/location/bar.dll#ProjectName.ClassName" viewastext></object> It doesn't currently work and used to work in older versions of IE. I've never come across embedding a dll in a web page like this. It appears to be a windows .NET application written in C#. This is used on our intranet. And ClassName is of type System.Windows.Forms.UserControl It also seems I can call the C# methods of the UserControl directly through javascript. Does anyone have any documentation on how this works and whether its possible to hack it into firefox. Rewriting the windows control as a web application would be a nightmare. [Edit] It appears to be some kind of activeX / COM thing where in IE you could just port a windows application directly into a html file. It's supposed to be able to run locally if you set up various correctly. If anyone has an idea of what needs to be set up for this to work, that would be nice.

• How to run setInterval() on multiple canvases simultaneously?

  I have a page which has several <canvas> elements. I am passing the canvas ID and an array of data to a function which then grabs the canvas info and passes the data onto a draw() function which in turn processes the given data and draws the results onto the canvas. So far, so good. However - I need to animate the canvas. As soon as I replace line 8 of the above example; draw(dimensions, data, i); with setInterval( function() { draw(dimensions, data, i); }, 33 ); It stops working and only draws the last canvas (with the others remaining blank). I'm new to both javascript and canvas so sorry if this is an obvious one, still feeling my way around. Guidance in the right direction much appreciated! Thanks.

• Is hardware accelerated CSS3 in Safari 4 & 5 broken, or my CSS and JS?

  Hi all, I've created a somewhat silly site that shows you the expected weather forecast for any city in the World. On webkit based browsers, when the weather is sunny a sun with CSS3 animated rotated sunbeams appears. This works fine on Chrome. An example (sunny, at the moment) page is: http://willitraintoday.co.uk/iceland/reykjavik/ However, when viewed in Safari 4 or 5 on Mac Snow Leopard, when the sun appears the sky background appears over it. Weirder still, as the cloud containing the advert moves across the sky, it squashes the main text. When the cloud reaches the left edge, the text appears wider than normal and starts squashing down again. I've tried: - Disabling the CSS3 animation; it works fine in Safari - Juggling the z-index of various elements; to no avail Is there something up with my Javascript or CSS, or is the hardware accelerated snow leopard Safari broken in this case? It seems not to happen in Safari 4 on Leopard, but I don't have Leopard any more to test myself. Grateful for any opinions!

• Newsletter send using AJAX to avoid PHP timeout

  I need to send newsletters. I have already a PHP script that sends mass emails but it won't work for long as email database is growing because of PHP max script run time. So, to avoid it I came up with a solution: I would call my PHP script using AJAX in javascript and I will give it $_GET parameter with a count 20 so the script would sent only 20 emails. Than AJAX would receive success response, and call my script again and again till all emails are send. Is it possible?   I'm playing around a little bit with raw XmlHttpRequestObjects + Comet Long Polling. (Usually, I'd let GWT or another framework handle of this for me, but I want to learn more about it.) [And on Firefox, it even causes severe problems when doing a page reload, for some reason I don't fully understand yet.] Question: Is that status check the correct way to handle this problem, or is there a better solution?

• Question about Client IDs

  I have a user control that is emmitting javascript using the ClientId function. For example: Out &= "ValidatorHookupControlID(" & Quote & ddlMonth.ClientID & Quote & "), document.all(" & Quote & CustomValidator1.ClientID & Quote & "));" & vbCrLf It appears to me that the ClientID function DOES not return the ultimate ID that is sent to the browser. Instead, the ClientID function only appears to be aware of its current parent control, which in this case is a the User Control and so the ID that is returned is the ID "dtmPassportExpirationDate_ddlMonth" When in fact the usercontrol is included in a master page and the ultimate ID that is used is: "ctl00_phPageContent_dtmPassportExpirationDate_ddlMonth" I may be nuts, but that's what it appears to be doing. I expect that the ClientID function would return the ultimate ID used in the HTML. Am I missing something?

• Can not make the settings from the sidebar gadget get applied

  Hey guys, OK, I am not an expert at Sidebar Gadgets, but I have this project I will have to make for school. Have tried to solve it on my own but I got really stuck. I will have to use the Cirip API (Cirip.ro being a kind of Twitter), and for the use of the API I have to input the username. I do so by means of the Settings, but when closing the settings there is no effect. Here is the code, but it's pretty messy. • Change with jQuery a cell of a table created with JSF

  From within a xhtml page created with JSF, I need to use JavaScript / jQuery for changing the content of a cell of a table. I know how to assign a unique id to the div containing the table, and to the tbody. I can also assign unique class names to the div itself and to the target column. I need to search my target row and my target column inside that particular div or inside that particular table, because the xhtml page may contain other tables with different unique ids (and accidentally with the same row and column ids).

• Using same onmouseover function for multiple objects

  I'm creating a building game in JavaScript and PHP that involves a grid. Each square in the grid is a div, with an own onmouseover and onmousedown function: for(x=0; x < width; x++) { for(y=0; y < height; y++) { var div = document.createElement("div"); //... div.onmouseclick = function() {blockClick(x, y)} div.onmouseover = function() {blockMouseover(x, y)} game.appendChild(div); } } But, all of the squares seem to have the x and y of the last square that was added. I can sort of see why this is happening - it is making a pointer to x and y instead of cloning the variables - but how could I fix it? I even tried for(x=0; x < width; x++) { for(y=0; y < height; y++) { var div = document.createElement("div"); var myX = x; var myY = y; div.onmouseclick = function() {blockClick(myX, myY)} div.onmouseover = function() {blockMouseover(myX, myY)} game.appendChild(div); } } with the same result. • How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images

  I have inherited a website to maintain that uses a html map overlaying a real map to link specific countries to specific pages. previously it loaded the default map image, then with some javascript it would change the image src to an image with that particular country in a different colour on mouseover and reset the image source back to the original image on mouse out to make maintenance (adding new countries) easier i made the initial map a background image by utilising some CSS for the div tag, and then created new images for each country which only had that countries hightlight so that the images remain fairly small. this works great but theres one issue which is particularly noticeable on slower internet connections when you hover over a country if you dont have the image file in your browser cache or downloaded it wont load the image unless you hover over another country and then back onto the first country - i guess this is due to the image having to manually be downloaded on first hover. My question: is it possible to force the load of these extra images AFTER the page and all the other assets have finished loading so that this behaviour is all but eliminated? the html code for the MAP is as follows: <div class="gtmap"><img id="Image-Maps_6200909211657061" src="<?php echo cdnhttpsCheck();   Hey all, Annoying brain numbing problem. However my php validation says the strlen() is longer than my js is essentially saying. So for example if i type a solid string and it says 0 or 3 chars left till 255. I then click save and the php gives me the length as being 261. Any ideas? Is it to do with special characters, bit sizes that js reads differently or misses out? Or is it to do with something else?   Hello, I am working on a website, and I would like to refresh a portion of the page after an ActiveX component has been installed. I have a general idea of how to do this with polling, which I am working on getting going : function detectComponentThenSleep(){ try{ // Call what I want ActiveX for, if the method is available, or // ActiveXComponent.object == null --- test for existance document.getElementById("ActiveXComponent").someMethod(); } catch{ // Try again, if the method is not available setTimeout(detectComponentThenSleep, 100); } } However, what I would REALLY like to do is something like this: ActiveXObject.addListener("onInstall", myfunction); I don't actually have the source for the ActiveX component, but I have complete control of the page I am hosting it on. I would like to use JavaScript, if possible, to accomplish this. So, my question is 1.) will this actually work with the polling method? and 2.) Is there an interrupt/listener like way of doing this? I am sure I am missing something with connecting the dots here, I can already detect if the component is present, but I am having trouble doing this asynchronously.   I paid somebody to build me a jQuery AJAX suggestion box script a while back. It works great. Now I'm trying to learn about it enough to modify it to do something different. Right now, the script that generates the suggestions just takes the query text and does the same check every time. Now, I want to be able to pass along additional info so different things are looked for with each instance of a search box. The HTML... simple, obvious. input class="suggest" name="q" type="text" autocomplete="off" / The jQuery looks like this: jQuery(document).ready(function() { $('.suggest').autocomplete( { source:'output.php', minLength:3, focus: function (event, ui) { $(event.target).val(ui.item.label); return false; } } ); [snip] } Instead of: source:'output.php', minLength:3, I'd like: source:'output.php?arg1=blah1&arg2=blah2', minLength:3, where arg1 and arg2 are passed along in the form... input class="suggest" name="q" type="text" autocomplete="off" / input type="hidden" name="arg1" value="blah1" input type="hidden" name="arg2" value="blah2" Does this make sense?   Wait, I know! I know that this "syntax highlight in textarea"-question was raised like a million times on stackoverflow! But, please, listen. offtopic: I'm not a web-developer, and technically I'm not a programmer at all. I study mechatronics and deal mostly with control-engineering and digital-hardware. And I'm so pissed off that whenever I want to share some application (that would be helpful in my field) and embed it into the web, I need to know such a crazy amount of technologies, like html, css, javascript, flash, etc.. that takes time, which I could have been spending for the benefit of my own field. Right now I'm playing with hardware-description-languages and I'm writing some Python-libraries to convert one HDL into another. And I wanted to embed such feature on the web: http://xhdl2vhdl.appspot.com/ I wanted to implement some basic syntax highlighting (only keywords highlighting will be enough) so that the code could be readable. But the whole idea highlighting something in textarea is not trivial at all. The other difficulty is that the languages I work with are rare, and there are no out-of-box solutions for them.
