• Django 1.4 dependency when packaging a Precise application

  I am trying to package a program I wrote that depends on Django 1.4.1 in Ubuntu 12.04. As Django 1.4.1 isn't available in Precise I am wondering if it is best to: Package up Django 1.4.1 and drop it in my ppa OR write a script that wgets Django at build time and installs. OR Something better that I haven't thought of. I am still inexperienced with packaging and would appreciate some advice Thanks

• Highlight Word add-in for Visual Studio 2010 [SSDT]

  I’ve just been alerted by my colleague Kyle Harvie to a Visual Studio 2010 add-in that should prove very useful if you are an SSDT user. Its simply called Highlight all occurrences of selected word and does exactly what it says on the tin, you highlight a word and it shows all other occurrences of that word in your script: There’s a limitation for .sql files (which I have reported) where the highlighting doesn’t work if the word is wrapped in square brackets but what the heck, its free, it takes about ten seconds to install….install it already! @Jamiet

• Unable to add users to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 after database restore

  Working with a client in our Multi-tenant CRM environment who was doing a database migration into CRM and as part of the process, a backup of their Organization_MSCRM database was taken just prior to starting the migration in case it needed to be restored and run a second time. In this case it did, so I restored the database and let the client know he should be good to go.  A few hours later I received a call that they were unable to add some new users, they would appear as available when using the add multiple user wizard, but anyone added would not be added to CRM.  It was also disucussed that these users had been added to CRM initally AFTER the database backup had been taken. I turned on tracing and tried to add the users through both the single user form and multiple user interface and was unable to do so.  The error message in the logs wasn't much help: Unexpected error adding user [email protected]: Microsoft.Crm.CrmException: INVALID_WRPC_TOKEN: Validate WRPC Token: WRPCTokenState=Invalid, TOKEN_EXPIRY=4320, IGNORE_TOKEN=False Searching on Google or bing didn't offer any assitance.  Apparently not a very common problem, or no one has been able to resolve. I did some searching in the MSCRM_CONFIG database and found that their are several user tables there and after getting my head around the structure found that there were enties here for users that were not part of the restored DB.  It seems that new users are added to both the Orgnaization_MSCRM and MSCRM_CONFIG and after the restore these were out of sync. I needed to remove the extra entries in order to address.  Restoring the MSCRM_CONFIG database was not an option as other clients could have been adding users at this point and to restore would risk breaking their instances of CRM.  Long story short, I was finally able to generate a script to remove the bad entries and when I tried to add users again, I was succesful.  In case someone else out there finds themselves in a similar situation, here is the script I used to delete the bad entries. • If unexpected database changes cause you problems – we can help!

  Have you ever been surprised by an unexpected difference between you database environments? Have you ever found that your Staging database is not the same as your Production database, even though it was the week before? Has an emergency hotfix suddenly appeared in Production over the weekend without your knowledge? Has your client secretly added a couple of indices to their local version of the database to aid performance? Worse still, has a developer ever accidently run a SQL script against the wrong database without noticing their mistake? If you’ve answered “Yes” to any of the above questions then you’ve suffered from ‘drift’. Database drift is where the state of a database (schema, particularly) has moved away from its expected or official state over time. The upshot is that the database is in an unknown or poorly-understood state. Even if these unexpected changes are not destructive, drift can be a big problem when it’s time to release a new version of the database. A deployment to a target database in an unexpected state can error and fail, potentially delaying a vital, time-sensitive update. A big issue with drift is that it can be hard to spot and it can be even harder to determine its provenance. So, before you can deal with an issue caused by drift, you’ll need to know exactly what change has been made, who made it, when they made it and why they made it. Those questions can take a lot of effort to answer. Then you actually need to decide what to do. Do you rollback the change because it was bad? Retrospectively apply it to the Staging environment because it is a required change? Or script the change into version control to get it back in line with your process? Red Gate’s Database Delivery Team have been talking to DBAs, database consultants and database developers to explore the problem of drift. We’ve started to get a really good idea of how big a problem it can be and what database professionals need to know and do, in order to deal with it.  It’s fair to say, we’re pretty excited at the prospect of creating a tool that will really help and we’ve got some great feedback on our initial ideas (see image below).   We’re now well underway with the development of our new drift-spotting product – SQL Lighthouse – and we hope to have a beta release out towards the end of July.   In my previous blog I described the steps to get OpenStack on Solaris up and running. Now we'll explore how WebLogic and OpenStack can work together to deliver truly elastic Middleware Platform as a Service. Middleware / Platform as a Service goals First, let's define what PaaS should be : PaaS offerings facilitate the deployment of applications without the complexity of managing the underlying hardware and software and provisioning hosting capabilities. To break it down: - PaaS provides a complete platform for hosting solutions (Java EE, SOA, BPM, ...) - Infrastructure provisioning (virtual machine, OS, platform) and managing is hidden from the PaaS user [administrator or developer] - Additionally, PaaS could / should define target SLAs, and the platform should ensure the SLAs are meet automatically. PaaS use case To make it more tangible, we have an IT Administrator who has the requirement to deploy a Java EE enterprise application. The application is used by external users who need to submit reports by the end of each month. As a result, the number of concurrent users will fluctuate, with expected huge spikes around the end of each month. The SLA agreed by the management is that no more than 100 requests should be waiting to be processes at any given time. In addition, the IT admin has no more than 3 days to have the platform and the application operational. The Challenges Some of the challenges the IT Administrator is facing are: - how are we going to ensure the processing power? - how are we going to provision the (virtual) machines, Java EE platform and deploy the application? - how are we going to monitor the SLA? - how are we going to react to SLA, and increase capacity?  The Ideal Solution Ideally, the whole process should be automated, "set it and forget" and require no human interaction: - The vendor packages the solution as deployable image(s) - The images are deployed to the IaaS - From there, automated processes take care of SLA  Solution Architecture with WebLogic 12c, Dynamic Clusters, OpenStack & Solaris OracleSolaris provides OS and virtualisation through Solaris Zones OpenStack is a part of Solaris 11.2 and provides Cloud Management (console and API) WebLogic 12c with Dynamic Clusters provides the Platform Trafic Manager provides load balancing On top of out that, we are going to implement a small control script - Cloud Manager - which is going to monitor SLA through WebLogic Diagnostic Framework. In case there are more than 100 pending requests, the script will: - provision a new virtual machine based on image which is configured for the WebLogic domain - add the machine to WebLogic domain - Increase the number of servers in dynamic cluster - Start the newly provisioned server  Stay tuned for part II The hole solution with working demo will be presented in one of our Partner WebCasts in June, exact date TBA.   I want to install Mediatomb i have two HDD a small 120 gb and a 1tb drive the 1 tb drive has 3 partition and is encrypted with truecrypt when i run the Mediatomb it can read the drives on the 120 gb but not on the 1 tb the 1tb drive is mounted on startup using a script also i have added truecrypt to the sudoers permission if it helps the permision on all 1 tb truecrypt mount pops up as my username where as the 2 partition from 120 gig has nobody i just got a Asus TF300T and i wanna stream media using DLNA/UPnP

  I am taring a folder and for some reason the entire directory structure that preceds the folder I am tarring is included. I am doing this in a script like: 'tar czf ' + dir + '/asdf.tgz ' + dir + 'asdf/' Where dir is like: /Downloads/archive/ In the man pages, I see I can fix this but I can't get it to work. I tried: tar czf -C dir ... But now I have some kind of a file -C in my folder (which I can't seem to delete btw!). Please help!

  Due to a bad update to 11.04 i had to completely reinstall Ubuntu, now i got everything pretty much the way it was before, except for plymouth.I've tried every script i found, every turorial i've found, i've installed Plymouth Managaer, i've installed a plymouth theme that worked before...and still, just plain white text, if it feels like showing me something, 'cause at times i don't even get to see the text mode, so, is there anything i can do witthout removing the ATI driver?, can i get rid of plymouth if it's not going to properly work?, are there an alternatives to plymouth?

• How do I detect if I'm in a 'full screen' bash shell or GUI terminal window?

  I have some code in my .bashrc that sets the terminal window title using the currently running command and it works great in Unity, where the terminal is in a window. However, when I'm logging in with the Ctrl + Alt + F1 terminal (whatever it's called), my prompt gets filled with garbage that is various escape sequences that set the (nonexistent) window title. How can I detect from within a bash script if I'm in one or the other?

• Executing server validators first before OnClientClick Javascript confirm/alert

  I got to answer a simple question over community forums. Consider this: Suppose you are developing a webpage with few input controls and a submit button. You have placed some server validator controls like RequiredFieldValidator to validate the inputs entered by the user. Once user fill-in all the details and try to submit the page via button click you want to alert/confirm the submission like "Are you sure to modify above details?". You will consider to use javascript on click of the button.Everything seems simple and you are almost done. BUT, when you run the page; you will see that Javascript alert/confirm box is executing first before server validators try to validate the input controls! Well, this is expected behaviour. BUT, this is not you want. Then? The simple answer is: Call Page_ClientValidate() in javascript where you are alerting the submission. Below is the javascript example:    <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">        function ValidateAllValidationGroups() {            if (Page_ClientValidate()) {                return confirm("Are you sure to modify above details?");            }        }    </script>Page_ClientValidate() function tests for all server validators and return bool value depends on whether the page meets defined validation criteria or not. In above example, confirm alert will only popup up if Page_ClientValidate() returns true (if all validations satisfy).   Having Red Gate's SQL Prompt installed with SQL Server Management Studio has saved me many headaches over the years of its use. It is extremely nice to type in a table name and see not only the column names, but also their data types and identification of primary keys. Another cool feature is the built-in short cut scripts that are included toward the bottom of the suggestion box. An example of these short cut scripts would be to type in the letters  cv and then hit enter and the following template for CREATE VIEW will appear: CREATE VIEW --WITH ENCRYPTION, SCHEMABINDING, VIEW_METADATA AS     SELECT /* query specification */ -- WITH CHECK OPTION GO These scripts are great, and on occasion rather humorous. Recently, I was writing an UPDATE statement that would update a derived and aliased set of data in . An example of such a statement is as follows: UPDATE y SET a.[FieldA] = b.[FieldB] FROM     (         SELECT             a.[FieldA]             ,b.[FieldB]         FROM             [MyTableA] a             INNER JOIN [MyTableB] b                 ON a.[PKA] = b.[PKB]     ) y; Upon typing the UPDATE y portion I hit enter and the expression "A A A A R G H !" appeared resulting in an unexpected burst of laughter. With a dash of curiosity and a pinch of research I discovered that at the bottom of the SQL Prompt suggestion box resides a short cut script called "yell", which is described as "Vent your frustration". Another humorous short cut script is "neo", which is described as "-- I know Kung-Fu". All is required for these to activate is to type the first letter and hit enter. I wonder if there are any undocumented ones?

  I've got several Ubuntu 10.10 servers which should all be set to do automatic security updates. Is there any way I could get them to send me an email when they apply updates (particularly if they fail)? I'm using r-u-on to monitor availability, disk space etc but the security updates are very important and I don't have a good way to monitor them. I could possibly script something myself but I figured it's the kind of thing that's probably been solved many times already.
