• July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 28 (sys.dm_db_stats_properties)

  The sys.dm_db_stats_properties Dynamic Management Function returns information about the statistics that are currently on your database objects. This function takes two parameters, an object_id and a stats_id. Let’s have a look at the result set from this function against the AdventureWorks2012.Sales.SalesOrderHeader table. To obtain the object_id and stats_id I will use a CROSS APPLY with the sys.stats system table. SELECT sp.* FROM sys.stats s CROSS APPLY sys.dm_db_stats_properties(s.object_id, s.Stats_id) sp WHERE sp.object_id = object_id('Sales.SalesOrderHeader') The first two columns returned by this function are the object_id and the stats_id columns. The next column, ‘last_updated’, gives you the date and the time that a particular statistic was last updated. The next column, ‘rows’, gives you the total number of rows in the table as of the last statistic update date. The ‘rows_sampled’ column gives you the number of rows that were sampled to create the statistic. The ‘steps’ column represents the number of specific value ranges from the statistic histogram. The ‘unfiltered_rows’ column represents the number of rows before any filters are applied. If a particular statistic is not filtered, the ‘unfiltered_rows’ column will always equal the ‘rows’ column. Lastly we have the ‘modification_counter’ column which represents the number of modification to the leading column in a given statistic since the last time the statistic was updated. Probably the most important column from this Dynamic Management Function is the ‘last_updated’ column. You want to always ensure that you have accurate and updated statistics on your database objects. Accurate statistics are vital for the query optimizer to generate efficient and reliable query execution plans. Without accurate and updated statistics, the performance of your SQL Server would likely suffer. • Active X Control issue on Terminal Server 2003

  I have a security camera system which can be viewed remotely via a web browser. It works excellent only with IE 6 and up and requires an ActiveX control "ERViewer.ocx". Some users require to view the cameras via Windows Terminal Server, but when they try to open the link to the DVR they get the prompt ti install the ActiveX and then the browser crashes when they try to install it. I logged in as admin and got the same issue. I called the tech support of the DVR but they have no idea, in other words, the usual useless tech support. Here is what I get in the error log Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16735, faulting module ERViewer.ocx, version 1.6.0.8, fault address 0x000064d7. I am sure it could be some kinda permission getting an ocx to run in IE. What else can I tweak?

• Python version priority in OSX/UNIX PATH environment variable

  Hi all, I want my system to use /usr/bin/python, but it's currently using /opt/local/bin/python, which points to /usr/bin/python2.6. I tried modifying the PATH variable in my .bashrc as PATH=~/bin:$PATH ...and then set a symbolic link in ~/bin to point to /usr/bin/python. i.e. ~/bin/python --> /usr/bin/python I figured this might prioritize this symlink over the /opt/local version if it came before the other one in the PATH variable, but when I opened a new shell I still found python pointing to /opt/local/bin. Any advice on a good way to get the system to use /usr/bin/python? Also, I usually use ipython as opposed to python directly. I'm assuming that if the system starts to use the correct version of python then ipython would also use that version? If not, how could I also get ipython to use the correct version? Thanks!

• How do I get a Canon MG, MP and MX series USB printer working?

  Printer MP6150 driver installed itself upon plugging in the printer. Printer is recognized (lsusb shows it) but does not mount. If the printer is recognized, the driver must be working (or?), but something is blocking the system from mounting the printer. • Linux script to kill process listening on a particular port

  I have a process that listens on a TCP port (?0003). From time to time it crashes - badly. It stops working, but continues hogging the port for some time, so I can't even restart it. I'm looking to automate this. What I do right now is: netstat -ntlp |grep -P "\*\:\d0003" To see what the PID is and then: kill -9 <pid> Does anyone have a script (or EXE for that matter) that would link the two steps together, ie. parse the PID from the first command and pass it to the second?

• If I change Windows admin user password, then I can't login to Outlook, why?

  I am seeing this strange behaviour with Windows 7 and Outlook 2010. If I change the password of User1 (Admin user), login, and start Outlook, it asks for the pasword. It keeps saying "password incorrect". I can login by using same password on the webclient. If I change User1's password back to last one, Outlook starts without any prompting and I'm able to send and receive emails. Is there any link between the user account, its password and the PST file's password?

• Plugin 'InnoDB' registration as a STORAGE ENGINE failed. On win 7

  I have had to reinstall MySQL, however the service is failing to start with the above cause listed in evnt viewer. One solution is apparently to delete a couple of files prefixed with 'ib_logfile' which represent any old databases. However I do not have these files, and my service is still failing to start ... ? When I say I don't have these files I did a search using the windows search with zero results, and they are definitely not present in my mysql install directory. And I don't have the "documents and setting/appilcation data' folder referenced in link. In fact I only have only one mysql install directory, I know where that is - what do I need to delete/change ? The instance is configured OK, I ran that as administrator and it is listed in services, but the service itself fails to start Any tips, other than going over to postgresql ?

• Can someone recommend a Compact Flash card to be used as a boot disk

  I have an early Acer Aspire One netbook, and the flash drive is really slow at writing. I've taken it apart to add more RAM, but I've pretty much stopped using it. I've read about people replacing the SSD with a Compact Flash card and a CF to ZIF adapter but I've also read about some Compact Flash cards where the manufacturer has permanently disabled the boot flag to stop people doing this kind of mod. (Can't find the link any more though). So my most specific question is: can someone recommend a compact flash card that does allow the boot flag to be set? Please say whether you've done it yourself, or just heard about it from someone else. Beyond that, is this generally a problem?

• Are Motherboards for the Acer Aspire One AOA150 Netbook Compatible with the AOA110?

  I have an Acer Aspire One ZG5 AOA110-1588 netbook, and the motherboard doesn't have a port for a SATA 2.5 inch hard drive; it only supports this slow 8GB SSD type drive. Through research I've discovered that the AOA150 motherboards do have a SATA slot, and the bottom plate of these laptops have an appropriate protrusion for the drive to fit in (for example, compare this to this). The AOA110 and AOA150 models are very similar in appearance and specs. I've even seen tutorials that involve soldering a SATA connector onto the AOA110's motherboard, essentially creating an AOA150 motherboard (right?) So, could I just swap out the motherboard in my netbook with the MBS0506001? (I'd post another link to the actual board but can't because of the spam prevention...) I assume I would also need to purchase and replace the bottom cover with a larger one and possibly get a hard drive caddy as well...? Thanks!

• Cannot open the device or file specified for office files

  Recently I've noticed on couple of computers that when users try to open Office files or links (to server path) to office files they get this error "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file", but the files itself open up without problems. This happened on 4 Windows XP computers already with Office 2003 installed. One one computer it was XLSX file being opened and every time user executed it, it opened up, but the error pops out. On the other hand when I open it directly from Office it works fine, without error. On another 3 computers it was after user pressed on the link to Access DB and it error out, but Access began MSI configuration (since it was first time user logged in to his computer) and in the end it opened up properly. After closing access and doing it again problem disappeared. Some faulty patch ? Eset Smart Security 4 is installed.

  I have an orange globe on my d link router. I signed into 192.168.0.1 and went to Manuel Internet Connection Setup as I was told to do. When I clicked on that and tried to clone my PC's MAC address, it said invalid MAC address. • WPA2 authentication fails on Ubuntu 12.04 using Rosewill RNX-N1

  Decided to reduce the clutter in the house and replace a wired connection with a wireless one on my wife's system using USB network device Rosewill RNX-X1. I can see and connect to unprotected network, but WPA2 authentication repeatedly fails. RNX-X1 works on other systems (including TV); also have 2 of 'em and tried each. Worth noting that I recently switched from Comcast to CenturyLink and so switched routers. The system connected successfully to previous router (Linksys EA4500) using WPA2. Would think it is the router (Actiontec C1000A) but all other devices (TV, iPad, Windows, Blackberry, and Squeezebox) connect ok. Would appreciate some diagnostic guidance and insight (phrased for a newbie!) • Trouble opening my router to my web server [closed]

  Here's the story. I have a webs server created and connected to my router. The website works great when I'm connected to the router, but when I'm off the network I can't access the website. I got the IP for my router by googling "what is my ip." I have opened ports 80 to 10080 to link to the server in the router. THe firewall is off. I can ping the router. One odd thing that I don't understand. When I am in network if I access XXX.XXX.XX.XX:80 I can access the web page no problem. If I access XXX.XXX.XX.XX:81 (or any other port) I get the error "Cannot access server." Any idea what the problem could be? Could it be my ISP?

• What are the minimum hardware requirements for the latest version of Android Jelly Bean OS?

  I searched around, and there's no information that points exactly to the suggested, minimum, or otherwise dated information containing specifications on this. I want to install a newer version of Android on an older ZTE-X500 MetroPCS smartphone. However, I'd like to know the backwards compatibility in regards to using a newer featured OS with lackluster, limited hardware compared to today's smartphones, such as Galaxy S4. However, I still wish to do this. If Jelly Bean is too demanding, I will set up Honeycomb, or get a modified Honey Comb ROM, or tweak the source to my preferences. However, nothing outlines the specifics of the "system requirements" it suggests for optimum performance, such as RAM, processor speed, processor features, and/or any other features, like DMA, video circuit advancements, and/or sound and special hardware requirements noted as well. Please, if you will, point me to a source that mentions this, and please tell do not link me to any PDF file formats. Thank you. PS: I'm a computer programmer.

• Asus Eee PC 1000HE wireless woes

  Ever since I have upgraded my Asus Eee PC 1000HE from Lucid 10.04 to Precise 12.04 I have been having issues with my wireless connections. At first I had wireless dropouts: I would be able to start using wireless, but then after a few minutes the wireless would stop working even though I was still connected to the network. Lately things turned worse: while I connect to my wireless network, it just never works. I tried all sorts of solutions on offer here and in other forums but none worked. At best I got the wireless to work up until I rebooted, at which point I would get the same symptoms again: the wireless network is there, but it's not really working. By now I tried so many different "solutions" I don't know where to start describing them; I have also reinstalled 12.04 several times, enough to make me lose faith in Ubuntu. Help here looks like my last resort. For the record, my Asus Eee PC 1000HE is equipped with an Atheros wireless card. • Using .htaccess to protect direct access of files

  We need to prevent direct access of files on our site from someone just entering a URL in their browser. I got this to work by using an htaccess file and it is fine in IE & Safari, but for some reason Firefox doesn't cooperate. I think it has something to do with the way Firefox reports referrers. Here is my code in the .htaccess file.
