• Lost all privileges since upgrading to 13.10

  Since upgrading to 13.10, I no longer have the 'privileges' to do the following things: Mount USB/CDROM drives Run software centre or software updater Press the GUI shut down or restart buttons Unlock my account in the 'settings - user accounts' section (padlock is greyed out) Also, when logging on as a guest user I get error messages relating to Compiz crashing with SIGSEGV and it hangs on a blank wallpaper screen. However, I still am able to use sudo in the terminal. I find it neat but I was wondering, is Code First supposed to be just a solution for rapid development where you can just jump right in without much planning or is it actually intended to be used for large scale applications?

• ASP.NET Asynchronous Pages and when to use them

  There have been several articles posted about using  asynchronous pages in ASP.NET but none of them go into detail as to when you should use them. I finally found a great post by Thomas Marquardt that explains the process in depth. He addresses a key misconception also: So, in your ASP.NET application, when should you perform work asynchronously instead of synchronously? Well, only 1 thread per CPU can execute at a time.  Did you catch that?  A lot of people seem to miss this point...only one thread executes at a time on a CPU. When you have more than this, you pay an expensive penalty--a context switch. However, if a thread is blocked waiting on work...then it makes sense to switch to another thread, one that can execute now.  It also makes sense to switch threads if you want work to be done in parallel as opposed to in series, but up until a certain point it actually makes much more sense to execute work in series, again, because of the expensive context switch. Pop quiz: If you have a thread that is doing a lot of computational work and using the CPU heavily, and this takes a while, should you switch to another thread? No! The current thread is efficiently using the CPU, so switching will only incur the cost of a context switch. Ok, well, what if you have a thread that makes an HTTP or SOAP request to another server and takes a long time, should you switch threads? Yes! You can perform the HTTP or SOAP request asynchronously, so that once the "send" has occurred, you can unwind the current thread and not use any threads until there is an I/O completion for the "receive". Between the "send" and the "receive", the remote server is busy, so locally you don't need to be blocking on a thread, but instead make use of the asynchronous APIs provided in .NET Framework so that you can unwind and be notified upon completion. Again, it only makes sense to switch threads if the benefit from doing so out weights the cost of the switch.   I am trying to install the eclipse-platform package in a new Ubuntu 10.10 and I am getting the following error (via the Ubuntu software center): Failed to fetch http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/libs/libservlet2.4-java/libservlet2.4-java_5.0.30-12_all.deb 404 Not Found Browsing to the mentioned URL, I can obviously verify that the .deb file in question is missing. Is the package broken, or is it just the NZ mirror?

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my MacBook Pro 9,1 Mid 2012 non retina 15 inch. I installed the 4 drivers from this link https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=precise but still I can't get wireless or bluetooth to work. Even adaptive brightness I think isn't working. Can anyone suggest where to get the complete set of drivers? P.s. Additional drivers says no proprietary devices found which is weird.

  I ran the wubi installer (from an extracted ubuntu ISO) and it downloads ubuntu-12.04-wubi-i386.tar.xz but it's slow and non-resumable so I cancelled it, found a mirror of the file online and downloaded it using Intenet download manager. Where should I be placing ubuntu-12.04-wubi-i386.tar.xz file so the wubi installer won't have to download that file anymore? Thank you. Update: I extracted the archive and there are two files, I'm afraid I do not know where to place them.

• Maintaining Revision Levels

  A question that came up on an earlier blog post was how to limit the number of revisions on a piece of content. UCM does not inherently enforce any sort of limit on how many revisions you can have. It's unlimited. In some cases, there may be content that goes through lots of changes, but there just simply isn't a need to keep all of its revisions around. Deleting those revisions through the content information screen can be very cumbersome. And going through the Repository Manager applet can take time as well to filter and find the revisions to get rid of. But there is an easier way through the Archiver. The Export Query criteria in Archiver includes a very handy field called 'Revision Rank'. With revision labels, they typically go up as new revisions come in (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, etc...). But you can't really use this field to tell it to keep the top 5 revisions. Those top 5 revision numbers are always going up. But revision rank goes the opposite direction. The very latest revision is always 0. The previous revision to that is 1. Previous revision to that is 2. And so on and so forth. With revision rank, you can set your query to look for any Revision Rank greater or equal to 5. Now as older revisions move down the line, their revision rank gets higher and higher until they reach that threshold. Then when you run that archive export, you can choose to delete and remove those revisions. Running that export in Archiver is normally a manual process. But with Idc Command, you can script the process and have it run automatically from the server. Idc Command is a utility that allows you to run any of the content server services via the command line. You basically feed it a text file with the services and parameters defined along with the user to run it as. The Idc Command executable is located within the \bin\ directory: $ ./IdcCommand -f DeleteOlderRevisions.txt -u sysadmin -l delete_revisions.log In this example, our IdcCommand file to run the export and do the deletions would look like: IdcService=EXPORT_ARCHIVE aArchiveName=DeleteOlderRevisions aDoDelete=1 IDC_Name=idc dataSource=RevisionIDs <<EOD>> You can then use automated scheduling routines in the OS to run the command and command file at the frequency needed. Remember that you are deleting the revisions from within UCM, but they are still getting placed within the archive. So you will need to delete those batches to have them fully removed (or re-import if you need to recover them).
