• Unable to install Xdebug

  I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up?   I'm trying to perform what I understand to be a relatively simple task. I'd like to remove the extensions from the URLs on my website. I have the proper set up in my application to handle and rewrite the URLs - the trouble is I can't get past IIS to actually get to my application without the extensions. The details: I'm running IIS6 on Windows Server 2003. I've gone into the web site for my application, gone to the home directory tab, clicked "Configuration" and added a wildcard map to the following file: c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll Which I verified is the same as what is used above in the application extensions portion by .ascx, etc. If I navigate to http://mywebsite.com/Blogs the result is as follows: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found Content-Length: 1635 Content-Type: text/html Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET Date: Thu, 14 Jan 2010 15:04:49 GMT Which seems to be a standard IIS 404 message. If I navigate to http://mywebsite.com/Blogs.aspx I get my ASP.NET app.... How can I troubleshoot this? I feel like I've double checked everything a dozen times but to no avail. I must be missing something obvious. I installed Tomcat7 and deployed jenkins.war, and I now see the Jenkins home page at http://myhost:8080/jenkins, but it's attempting to create the Jenkins directory at /usr/share/tomcat7/.jenkins, which it can't for security reasons. I've already created /srv/jenkins and given the tomcat7 group permissions, and want to set JENKINS_HOME to that path.   I have a FoxPro 2.6 (16-bit) application that I've installed on a Win2008 (32-bit) Terminal Server. I then created a Remote App from it. It works fine. The problem is that within this FoxPro application it calls out to a .Net application. I have the proper .Net Framework installed on the server (2.0) and I have run the code access security policy tool (caspol.exe).   I'm a self taught back end engineer so I'm learning all of this stuff as I go along. For the longest time, I've been using basic authentication for my users. Many developers are advising against this approach since each request will contain the username & password in clear text. Anyone with the right skills can sniff on the connection between my iOS application and my Django/Gunicorn Server and obtain their password. I wouldn't want to put my user's credentials at risk so I would like to implement a more secure way of authentication. SSL seems to be the most viable option. My server doesn't serve any static content or anything crazy of that sort. All the server does is send and receive "json" responses from and to my iOS application. Here is my current topology. iOS application ------ Amazon Elastic Load Balancer ------- EC2 Instances running HTTP Gunicorn. Gunicorn runs on port 8000. I have a CNAME record from GoDaddy for the Amazon Elastic Load Balancer DNS. So instead of using the long DNS to make requests, I just use server.example.com. To interact with my servers I send and receive requests to server.example.com:8000/ This setup works and has been solid. However I need to have a more secure way. I would like to setup SSL between my iOS application and my Elastic Load Balancer. How can I go about doing this? Since I am only sending json responses to my application, do I really need to buy a certificate from a CA or can I create my own? (since browsers will not be interacting with my servers. My servers are only designed to send json responses to my iOS application).

  Upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Store upgrade path has screwed my SkyDrive. The C:\Users\<user name>\SkyDrive folder is empty (it only has single file desktop.ini). When I open the native (Store) SkyDrive app, I see "This location can't be found, please try later". I'm glad to still have my files alive online in my SkyDrive account. • 502 Bad Gateway error after failed requests using Passenger

  I've got a staging server running nginx 1.0.5 using Rails 3.1 under Passenger 3.0.9. The problem is that a request sent just after one where there's an application error return 502 Bad Gateway. To test it I've set up a simple controller with an action that just raise a dummy exception. One request will show the Rails error message and the next one will show nginx 502 Bad Gateway error, then it goes back to the Rails application error, etc. While investigating this problem I've found out that load testing the application (which increase the number of application processes) make that issue disapear. That is until the extra processes are shutdown, then it reappear. I've tried setting the passenger_min_instances option, but doing so doesn't change anything and in this case each time an application error happen one instance is killed while after load testing all instances are kept alive. P.S.: Some people on my team told me that they've seen the 502 error even when there's no application error but I've not been able to reproduce that. Update: Just found out how to display the responses status codes using ab and most of them are 502!

• Windows Update and lsass.exe

  I have a brand new installation of Windows XP (SP1 or older). I installed Norton AntiVirus, Firefox, Putty, and Cygwin. No other software is present. Windows Update finds the following 64 updates: KB905760, KB978262, Internet Explorer 8, KB71961, KB954155, KB968816, KB923561, KB950762, KB949402, KB950974, KB951376, KB951748, KB952004, KB952954, KB955069, KB956572, KB956802, KB956803, KB956844, KB958470, KB958869, KB959426, KB960803, KB960859, KB961501, KB969059, KB970238, KB970238, KB971032, KB971468, KB971657, KB972270, KB973507, KB973815, KB973904, KB974112, KB974318, KB974392, KB975025, KB975560, KB975561, KB975713, .......) When these updates are applied, the system reboots to a black screen with two error messages. The first error message says: lsass.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. The second error message says: services.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. I then proceed to boot into Safe Mode, use System Restore, and everything works fine again until the 64 updates re-appear in Windows Update. I can see two options: disable Auto-Updates or install each of the 64 updates one at a time until finding the troublesome update. Does anyone have any better ideas?

  We have a Java web application deployed on Tomcat. We also setup Apache and mod_proxy_ajp to route web requests (port 80/443) to Tomcat. We would like to deploy a PHP application on the same Apache server - probably under a subdirectory (/var/www/ourapp). Now we would like to access & display web pages from PHP application within web pages generated by Java application. Planning to implement Single Sign-on as well. Example: Web page from java has (JQuery Tabs) and we like to display the PHP web page within a tab while all other HTML comes from java application. Can you please give a overall picture of how to proceed about this? Mainly 1. how we should install/setup our PHP application on same Apache server which is used to route web requests to Tomcat? i.e. either setup sub domain or install in sub directory 2. • NGINX: How do I calculate an optimal no. of worker processes and worker connections?

  Our web app is running on a Linode 2048 server at the moment (~ 2048 GB of RAM) The MYSQL database is on another linode of it's own so this server is really only handling NGINX and and the Rails application. The application itself uses about 185976 of memory per instance (RSS). Our traffic is < 1000 per day and the pages are mostly cached so there are fewer hits to the rails app itself. My question is - how can I calculate optimal NGINX config settings for my app? Can you see any flaws in this approach? My question is this: First, is there anything wrong with my idea above? Second, if so, what is the best way (through group policy or otherwise) to ensure this application launches whenever a session is started on a server?

• Are there any other causes of this error that are NOT related to initial setup?

  I'm trying to diagnose an issue at a customer site. They are receiving the following error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server I've seen this a few times, but only during the initial setup - it's often caused by one of the following: The database server is turned off The network connection between the database server and the application is closed or somehow blocked (e.g. a firewall) The SQL Server instance is not set up to receive remote connections from the application server (e.g. TCP is turned off, remote connections are disabled, or the "SQL Server Browser" service is stopped/disabled) However, if I assume that no configuration changes have been made, I'm trying to postulate on what the reason might be for getting this error at a random point after the initial setup. My initial thought is: SQL Server machine has run out of resources (e.g. RAM) and is unable to accept new requests from the application server Is this a valid theory? What other possible causes are there of this error that are not related to the initial setup of the server / application connection? Or is it simply impossible that this error could occur without a configuration change having been made (either on the SQL Server side, application side, or somewhere in-between (network))? NOTE: I believe this question differs from the plethora of questions related to this error message because the application and server have been talking to each other quite happily until now (most, if not all, other questions seem to relate to initial setup).

• Apache not routing to tomcat on correct Virtual host

  We are looking at moving from Websphere to Tomcat. I'm trying to send traffic to tomcat from apache web server based on the virtual host directives in apache web server. After some playing around I have it sort of working, but I'm noticing that if I have a JKMount directive in the first VirtualHost in apache, all virtualHosts will send to the application server. If I have the JKMount in Virtual hosts further down in the configs, then only that VirtualHost works with the request. • Too many connections to Sql Server 2008

  I have an application in C# Framework 4.0. Like many app this one connects to a data base to get information. In my case this database is SqlServer 2008 Express. The database is in my machine In my data layer I’m using Enterprise Library 5.0 When I publish my app in my local machine (App Pool Classic) Windows Professional IIS 7.5 The application works fine. I’m using this query to check the number of connections my application is creating when I’m testing it. SELECT db_name(dbid) as DatabaseName, count(dbid) as NoOfConnections, loginame as LoginName FROM sys.sysprocesses WHERE dbid > 0 AND db_name(dbid) = 'MyDataBase' GROUP BY dbid, loginame When I start testing the number of connection start growing but at some point the max number of connection is 26. I think that’s ok because the app works When I publish the app to TestMachine1 • XP Mode Virtual Machine (Windows XP Professional) • IIS 5.1 It works fine, the behavior is the same, the number of connections to the database increment to 24 or 26, after that they stay at that point no matter what I do in the application. The problem: When I publish to TestMachine2 (App Pool Classic) • Windows Server 2008 R2 • IIS 7.5 I start to test the application the number of connection to the database start to grow but this time they grow very rapidly and don’t stop growing at 24 or 26, the number of connections grow till the get to be 100 and the application stop working at that point. I have check for any difference on the publications, especially in Windows Professional and Windows Server and they seem with the same parameters and configurations. Any clues why this could be happening? , any suggestions?

• Need solution for Network/Servers.

  Dear All, Please help me. I just joined a new Hospital and want some help managing my network. There are some requirements: Current Network: There is a D.S.L connection and that is terminated on a LINUX proxy and then connected to D-Link layer 2 switches and then providing internet to more then 200 PC's (Would be increasing to 1500 in couple of months). D-Link switches are not configured yet. Also there is one Database server Report server and an application server. In near Future Application should be accessed by local users as well as remote users from internet via our web server. We do have a sharing server and all these servers databases and PC's are on single sub net. Required Network: All i do want is to secure my network from outside access and just allowing specific users via web application and they will be submitting there record for patient card and appointment facility by means of application and entering there record (on our database) but not violating our network resources. Secondly in house users also need to access the same application and also internet but they must have some unique identity and rights (i.e. Finance lab dept. peoples do have limited access to that application). Notes: Should i create V LAN or break sub nets. Having a firewall will solve my issues? is a router needed on these type of scenario's. Currently all the access are restricted from Linux Proxy. • MVC Portable Areas Enhancement &ndash; Embedded Resource Controller

  MvcContrib contains a feature called Portable Areas which I’ve recently blogged about. In short, portable areas provide a way to distribute MVC binary components as simple .NET assemblies where the aspx/ascx files are actually compiled into the assembly as embedded resources. This is an extremely cool feature but once you start building robust portable areas, you’ll also want to be able to access other external files like css and javascript.  After my recent post suggesting portable areas be expanded to include other embedded resources, Eric Hexter asked me if I’d like to contribute the code to MvcContrib (which of course I did!). Embedded resources are stored in a case-sensitive way in .NET assemblies and the existing embedded view engine inside MvcContrib already took this into account. Obviously, we’d want the same case sensitivity handling to be taken into account for any embedded resource so my job consisted of 1) adding the Embedded Resource Controller, and 2) a little refactor to extract the logic that deals with embedded resources so that the embedded view engine and the embedded resource controller could both leverage it and, therefore, keep the code DRY. The embedded resource controller targets these scenarios: External image files that are referenced in an <img> tag External files referenced like css or JavaScript files Image files referenced inside css files Embedded Resources Walkthrough This post will describe a walkthrough of using the embedded resource controller in your portable areas to include the scenarios outlined above. I will build a trivial “Quick Links” widget to illustrate the concepts. The portable area registration is the starting point for all portable areas. The MvcContrib.PortableAreas.EmbeddedResourceController is optional functionality – you must opt-in if you want to use it.  To do this, you simply “register” it by providing a route in your area registration that uses it like this: 1: context.MapRoute("ResourceRoute", "quicklinks/resource/{resourceName}", 2: new { controller = "EmbeddedResource", action = "Index" }, 3: new string[] { "MvcContrib.PortableAreas" }); First, notice that I can specify any route I want (e.g., “quicklinks/resources/…”).  Second, notice that I need to include the “MvcContrib.PortableAreas” namespace as the fourth parameter so that the framework is able to find the EmbeddedResourceController at runtime. The handling of embedded views and embedded resources have now been merged.  Therefore, the call to: 1: RegisterTheViewsInTheEmmeddedViewEngine(GetType()); has now been removed (breaking change).  It has been replaced with: 1: RegisterAreaEmbeddedResources(); Other than that, the portable area registration remains unchanged. The solution structure for the static files in my portable area looks like this: I’ve got a css file in a folder called “Content” as well as a couple of image files in a folder called “images”. To reference these in my aspx/ascx code, all of have to do is this: 1: <link href="<%= Url.Resource("Content.QuickLinks.css") %>" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> 2: <img src="<%= Url.Resource("images.globe.png") %>" /> This results in the following HTML mark up: 1: <link href="/quicklinks/resource/Content.QuickLinks.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> 2: <img src="/quicklinks/resource/images.globe.png" /> The Url.Resource() method is now included in MvcContrib as well. Make sure you import the “MvcContrib” namespace in your views. Next, I have to following html to render the quick links: 1: <ul class="links"> 2: <li><a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a></li> 3: <li><a href="http://www.bing.com">Bing</a></li> 4: <li><a href="http://www.yahoo.com">Yahoo</a></li> 5: </ul> Notice the <ul> tag has a class called “links”. This is defined inside my QuickLinks.css file and looks like this: 1: ul.links li 2: { 3: background: url(/quicklinks/resource/images.navigation.png) left 4px no-repeat; 4: padding-left: 20px; 5: margin-bottom: 4px; 6: } On line 3 we’re able to refer to the url for the background property. As a final note, although we already have complete control over the location of the embedded resources inside the assembly, what if we also want control over the physical URL routes as well. This point was raised by John Nelson in this post. This has been taken into account as well. For example, suppose you want your physical url to look like this: 1: <img src="/quicklinks/images/globe.png" /> instead of the same corresponding URL shown above (i.e., “/quicklinks/resources/images.globe.png”). You can do this easily by specifying another route for it which includes a “resourcePath” parameter that is pre-pended. • Calculated Columns in Entity Framework Code First Migrations

  I had a couple people ask me about calculated properties / columns in Entity Framework this week.  The question was, is there a way to specify a property in my C# class that is the result of some calculation involving 2 properties of the same class.  For example, in my database, I store a FirstName and a LastName column and I would like a FullName property that is computed from the FirstName and LastName columns.  My initial answer was: 1: public string FullName 2: { 3: get { return string.Format("{0} {1}", FirstName, LastName); } 4: } Of course, this works fine, but this does not give us the ability to write queries using the FullName property.  For example, this query: 1: var users = context.Users.Where(u => u.FullName.Contains("anan")); Would result in the following NotSupportedException: The specified type member 'FullName' is not supported in LINQ to Entities. Only initializers, entity members, and entity navigation properties are supported. It turns out there is a way to support this type of behavior with Entity Framework Code First Migrations by making use of Computed Columns in SQL Server.  While there is no native support for computed columns in Code First Migrations, we can manually configure our migration to use computed columns. Next, we need to run 2 commands in the Package Manager Console.  First, run Enable-Migrations to enable Code First Migrations for the UserContext.  Next, run Add-Migration Initial to create an initial migration.  This will create a migration that creates the UserProfile table with 3 columns: FirstName, LastName, and FullName.  This is where we need to make a small change.  Instead of allowing Code First Migrations to create the FullName property, we will manually add that column as a computed column. 1: public partial class Initial : DbMigration 2: { 3: public override void Up() 4: { 5: CreateTable( 6: "dbo.UserProfiles", 7: c => new 8: { 9: Id = c.Int(nullable: false, identity: true), 10: FirstName = c.String(), 11: LastName = c.String(), 12: //FullName = c.String(), 13: }) 14: .PrimaryKey(t => t.Id); 15: Sql("ALTER TABLE dbo.UserProfiles ADD FullName AS FirstName + ' ' + LastName"); 16: } 17: 18: 19: public override void Down() 20: { 21: DropTable("dbo.UserProfiles"); 22: } 23: } Finally, run the Update-Database command.  Now we can query for Users using the FullName property and that query will be executed on the database server.  However, we encounter another potential problem. The obvious downside to this implementation is that the FullName calculation is duplicated in the database and in the UserProfile class. • Viewing the NetBeans Central Registry (Part 2)

  Jens Hofschröer, who has one of the very best NetBeans Platform blogs (if you more or less understand German), and who wrote, sometime ago, the initial version of the Import Statement Organizer, as well as being the main developer of a great gear design & manufacturing tool on the NetBeans Platform in Aachen, commented on my recent blog entry "Viewing the NetBeans Central Registry", where the root Node of the Central Registry is shown in a BeanTreeView, with the words: "I wrapped that Node in a FilterNode to provide the 'position' attribute and the 'file extension'. All Children are wrapped too. Then I used an OutlineView to show these two properties. Great tool to find wrong layer entries." I asked him for the code he describes above and he sent it to me.
