• How To Specify Bitrate, Codec and Demultiplexing for VLC Video Capture or Recording

  I capture video from old TV tuner card - Pinnacle PCTV - using VLC. The video is from the Composite input and audio is from I guess the mixer or Line in. The command I use is: vlc v4l2:///dev/video0:normal=pal:width=720:height=576:input=1 :input-slave="alsa://hw:0,0" In VLC, I have enabled the Advanced Controls toolbar, which allows me to record videos when I want to. However, these videos are uncompressed - very big and play only with VLC. Totem throws the "Could not demultiplex stream" error. I need to convert them using WinFF to reduce their size and make them playable with Totem and other software. My question is whether I can configure the recording settings - the codecs and the bitrate, and also get the stream demultiplexed. If I pass any -sout parameter with command I get a "Segmentation fault". I use 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10.

• Where to find clients who are willing to pay top dollar for highly reliable code?

  I'm looking to find clients who are willing to pay a premium above usual contractor rates, for software that is developed with advanced tools and techniques to eliminate certain classes of bugs. However, I have little experience of contracting, and relatively few contacts. It's important to state that the kind of tools and techniques I'm thinking of (e.g. formal verification) are used commercially extremely rarely, as far as I'm aware. There is kind of a continuum of approaches to higher reliability, with basic testing and basic static typing at one end and full-blown formal verification at the other, but the methods I'm thinking of are towards the latter end of the spectrum.

• Why does F. Wagner consider "NOT (AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1)" to be ambiguous?

  In his article on Virtual Environments (a part of his VFSM specification method) Ferdinand Wagner describes some new ways of thinking about Boolean Algebra as a software design tool. On page 4 of this PDF article, when describing operators in his system he says this: Control statements need Boolean values. Hence, the names must be used to produce Boolean results. To achieve this we want to combine them together using Boolean operators. There is nothing wrong with usage of AND and OR operators with their Boolean meaning. For instance, we may write: DI_ON OR AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1 AND TIMER_OVER to express the control situation: digital input is on or analog input is larger than 8.1 and timer is over. We cannot use the NOT operator, because the result of the Boolean negation makes sense only for true Boolean values. The result of, for instance, NOT (AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1) would be ambiguous. If "AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1" is acceptable, why would he consider "NOT (AI_LARGER_THAN_8.1)" to be ambiguous?

• How do you organize information?

  I have a relatively large collection of useful books (paper and electronic), [academic] papers (mostly electronic) and web bookmarks. However, I don't have an overview of the material. Currently I have most of the electronic (PDF/DJVU) material in a single hierarchical folder and use filename search. Two questions. Do you have a similar problem, and how do you deal with it? Can you recommend some software to help with organizing bibliographic information, including web links. Easy editing of hierarchy and tags is a must. I would also like to be able to write own comments for each entry. [With my current scheme, just using the filesystem, does not provide other metadata.] A plugin for emacs would be perfect, but it's not a must. (org-mode MIGHT be adequate).

  A recent TechTarget article features an interview with Business Architecture expert William Ulrich (Take a business-driven approach to application modernization ). In that article Ulrich offers this advice: "Moving from one technical architecture might be perfectly viable on a project by project basis, but when you're looking at the big picture and you want to really understand how to drive business value so that the business is pushing money into IT instead of IT pulling money back, you have to understand the business architecture. When we do that we're going to really be able to start bringing value to the table." In many respects that big picture view is what software architecture is all about. As an architect, your technical skills must be top-notch. But if you don't apply that technical knowledge within the larger context of moving the business forward, what are you accomplishing?   It's been quite a few years since Code Complete was published. I really love the book, I keep it in the bathroom at the office and read a little out of it once or twice a day. What developments in computer software... development need to be added to Code Complete 3e, and for the sake of reductionism, what should be removed to make room for them? Is it necessary even possible to call Code Complete Code Complete if it doesn't have language features that even Delphi has like anonymous methods and generics? Also, what languages would be more appropriate than C++ to use for a majority of code examples?

  Can software with AGPLv3 license be used with GPLv3 project? Can the resulting project be GPLv3, or must it have the special requirements of AGPLv3? I am not very smart from clause 13 of GLPv3 that mentions AGPLv3. Notwithstanding any other provision of this License, you have permission to link or combine any covered work with a work licensed under version 3 of the GNU Affero General Public License into a single combined work, and to convey the resulting work. The terms of this License will continue to apply to the part which is the covered work, but the special requirements of the GNU Affero General Public License, section 13, concerning interaction through a network will apply to the combination as such. Must the resulting, combined work be AGPLv3 or not?

• Proper way to measure the scalability of web Application

  Let's say that I have a web Application where i'm going to have 300 users and each one have to see data on real time, imagine that each client make an ajax call to the server to see in real time what's happens with the changes of the data, this calls are made each 300 ms per user. I know that i can run a simulation to see if the hardware of my server supports this example. But what happen's if the number of users start to grow up. Is there a way that i can measure the hardware needed to handle this growing behavior, a software, a formula, algorithm or maybe recommend me if i need to implement an distributed application with multiplies servers and balance the loads.

  What kinds of projects are given preference in top notch colleges like Stanford, Caltech, etc to get admission into MS programme in Computer Science? I have an average academic portfolio. I'm pursuing Btech from a not so popular university in India with an aggregate of 67%. I'm good at designing algorithms and possess good knowledge of core subjects but helpless with my percentage. So, I think the only way I can impress them is with my project(s). Can anyone please suggest me the kinds of projects that are given preference by such top level institutes? Could you please also suggest some good projects? My area of interest would be Artificial Intelligence or any application/software/algorithm design which could be of some help to common people. Or if you have any other random idea for my project then please share it with me. Note: Web based projects and management projects like lib management wouldn't be my priority.

• Getting a Conexant CX23885 TV Capture Card working

  I'm new to Linux, and am trying to get my Capture Card working on 11.04. The only command that I know to run to find out any information is lspci, which tells me that I have 02:00.0 Multimedia video controller: Conexant Systems, Inc. CX23885 PCI Video and Audio Decoder (rev 04) I've looked at using Me TV, but haven't worked out how to configure it for my card, or what I need to do to get it running. I'm not fussed on what software I use to run the Capture Card, but I've currently got only Me TV installed. Edit: When I run tvtime, I get the following errors: videoinput: Cannot open capture device /dev/video0: No such file or directory mixer: find error: Success mixer: Can't open mixer default, mixer volume and mute unavailable. mixer: Can't open device default/Line, mixer volume and mute unavailable.   I'm writing an Ubuntu package for a package which essentially provides a number of libraries and headers which then be used to build other software. The package also breaks up in smaller subpackages which are interdependent; in this sense the package is quite similar to boost. I noticed that packages like boost provide [...] libboost-dbg libboost-dev libboost-doc [...] libboost-all-dev [...] but nothing that goes by the name boost or libboost. What is the idea behind this? What are the purposes of the -dbg, -dev, and -doc packages? Are there any instructions provided on how to write build files for those packages?

• 64 bit Ubuntu sees half my RAM

  This is on my AMD FX(tm)-4100 Quad-Core Processor (according to /proc/cpuinfo) on a machine with two 4GB RAM DIMMs. BIOS shows 8GB RAM installed. Any help would be appreciated. • How to act when you get the last warning? [closed]

  I'm a software developer, currently working on web development. We are a small company a team with 2 persons, a developer and a designer and we have no-one to test our applications. From the last week I was somehow rushed to finish a task within a project programmed by someone else and I released it with a bug which I did not see. Today I got the last warning and if there is a release with a bug I will be fired. So is this fair enough to get fired because releases with bugs without any testers around or should I really improve my skills on testing?

• Ubuntu 12.10 "Turn screen off when inactive for: Never" still turns off

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10, my screen still goes off after about ten minutes. I've been to the Brightness and Lock control panel. The Turn screen off when inactive for: setting is set for Never. I've been through the dconf Editor searching for power, screen, and idle changing parameters. This doesn't seem to have any effect on the display timeout. Here's one more interesting thing, the screen doesn't go off, per se. It just goes black. Meaning, the back lighting is still on, and all the pixels are black. When it goes black, it does a very pleasant quick dim to black. Similarly, it quickly un-dim's after a key press, mouse movement, or mouse click. So, I'm feeling this is more of a software setting the timeout, not a power saving function.
