• Forms Authentication and Login controls

  I am upgrading a website written using ASP.NET 1.1 and the logic for the login page includes verifying the credentials, calling FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie() and populating the Session with the user information. I am updating this page to use Login controls and the Membership API and am trying to wrap my head around the concepts that have been changed. Most of the samples I see do not do anything on the login button event handler, so is the logic of setting the cookie abstracted out into the control? Also, how do I check if a user is logged in or not on other pages. Does it still store user information using the Session? How do I check if a user belongs to a particular role or not (Earlier, I would look in the Session object to do something like this) Is the Session a bad way of storing user info? Thanks

• MFC Dll with COM Interface

  Hi All, I am pretty new to managed/unmanaged interoperability and COM concepts. I received a suggestion of using COM Interop, for using my existing MFC code in C#. But the problem for me is, i have a MFC Dll which is not a valid COM component. How to make this MFC DLLs to have COM-accessible interfaces ready for use in .NET. I tried to search for any settings to make it COM accessible, but was not able to understand any!! Any suggestions or ideas are welcome. Thanks a lot!

• Suggestions for Single-Page Web Application Design?

  My view is that unless you need to change the basic structure of the user interface, you should not have to reload the page at all for any user interactions. I'd like to approach my next ASP.NET MVC project with this in mind. Can anyone suggest any principles, patterns or practices* I should consider? Excellent book, btw. Still trying to wrap my head around some of the concepts though. I thought a question like this would help link the theory to a practical design. Thanks

• Memory management, and async operations: when does an object become nil?

  I have a view that will be displaying downloaded images and text. I'd like to handle all the downloading asynchronously using ASIHTTPRequest, but I'm not sure how to go about notifying the view when downloads are finished... If I pass my view controller as the delegate of the ASIHTTPRequest, and then my view is destroyed (user navigates away) will it fail gracefully when it tries to message my view controller because the delegate is now nil? i.e. if i do this: UIViewController *myvc = [[UIViewController alloc] init]; request.delegate = myvc; [myvc release]; Do myvc, and request.delegate now == a pointer to nil? This is the problem with being self-taught... I'm kinda fuzzy on some basic concepts. Other ideas of how to handle this are welcome.

  Programmers seem to live in a world of their own (as this site indicates), with their own vibrant culture - and their own premises and vocabulary. Once we've been in the field for a bit, we take a lot of things for granted. But I'm often faced with the question "What do you do?" Or "What is programming?" I generally try to answer this with a small, often trivial, real-world example of how programming is prevalent in our everyday lives and keeps things running. The example I use most often is an elevator - someone has to program the logic of that... And I've seen elevators that are "smart" and ones that are quite backwards and foolish. (And you can easily understand if/decision and looping from that... incorporates a lot of important programming concepts in a very small example.) I've sometimes heard people use traffic lights as an example. What example do you / would you use to explain the concept of programming to someone completely clueless?

  I'm thinking about rewriting an MS Access db I wrote years ago into a stand-alone Python app. Other than a college class called "Intro to C++" (console only, with OOP concepts) and the Access db itself, I have no experience, so I need to ask if the basis for my decision to go with Python is correct. Is it true that: 1) Python is relatively easy to pick up? 2) Python apps can run as "portable" (ie from one directory, no registry needs, nothing needs to be pre-installed on a Windows PC) as long as I use an embedded db?

• Teach Perl as a first language?

  I need to teach a non-programmer the basics of computer programming + some basic programming skills (- He's going to be in a position between the clients and the programmers , so the company requires him to learn the basic concepts of programming). I thought of Perl - You can teach it without getting into typing and pointers and it's syntax is very close to human (precious "bless" :) ) - but I'm a bit troubled because I feel like I'm going to "spoil" him for other languages in the future (C,C++,Java - What some people call "Real" languages) - exactly because of the reasons mentioned above. What do you think?

• Idiomatic ruby for temporary variables within a method

  Within a method, I am using i and j as temporary variables while calculating other variables. What is an idiomatic way of getting rid of i and j once they are no longer needed? Should I use blocks for this purpose? i = positions.first while nucleotide_at_position(i-1) == nucleotide_at_position(i) raise "Assumption violated" if i == 1 i -= 1 end first_nucleotide_position = i j = positions.last while nucleotide_at_position(j+1) == nucleotide_at_position(j) raise "Assumption violated" if j == sequence.length j += 1 end last_nucleotide_position = j Background: I'd like to get rid of i and j once they are no longer needed so that they aren't used by any other code in the method. Gives my code less opportunity to be wrong. I don't know the name of the concept - is it "encapsulation"? The closest concepts I can think of are (warning: links to TV Tropes - do not visit while working) Chekhov'sGun or YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness. Another alternative would be to put the code into their own methods, but that may detract from readability.

• Variable-byte encoding clarification

  Hello: I am very new to the world of byte encoding so please excuse me (and by all means, correct me) if I am using/expressing simple concepts in the wrong way. I am trying to understand variable-byte encoding. I have read the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable-width_encoding) as well as a book chapter from an Information Retrieval textbook. I think I understand how to encode a decimal integer. For example, if I wanted to provide variable-byte encoding for the integer 60, I would have the following result: 1 0 1 1 1 1 0 0 (please let me know if the above is incorrect). If I understand the scheme, then I'm not completely sure how the information is compressed. Is it because usually we would use 32 bits to represent an integer, so that representing 60 would result in 1 1 1 1 0 0 preceded by 26 zeros, thus wasting that space as opposed to representing it with just 8 bits instead?   I want to help the Dev team identify areas of knowledge (practical and theoretical) that they can work on. Though I am big believer in focusing on people's strengths being a good programmer requires (I think) being challenged by concepts and ideas that don't always come naturally. We work largely in the web app space using PHP & MySQL but better skills in data modelling, query optimisation, use of MVC and OOP etc. would help the team and the company a lot. I want to help the Dev team manage their careers, explore and expand their skills sets. Be all they can be and better than they were previously. I know its an idealistic goal but work must be about more than simply getting the work done. There should be some time to review, to learn, to grow and get better. Any thoughts, ideas, opinions and directions to tests or similar resources would be greatly appreciated.

I have heard, that it is possible to automatically determine the IP of database servers via broadcast / multicast / UDP (I am not familiar with these concepts). • How to document an XML Schema?

  I have developed a XML schema for an application I wrote. Now I want to document the valid structure for the end user, however I can't come up with any natural way to do this. I've seen things like xs3p, which essentially converts a xsd schema to a HTML representation, however that doesn't look like good documentation to me; the user shouldn't need to know anything about schemas to understand what he is allowed to do. Any ideas how to document this? Any programs / editors / graphical solutions or simply concepts I can build on?

From what basis do I have to design them? From simple assumptions? From the initial requirements? Or is this where UML diagrams and the "analysis phase" fits in? Just had to ask because in some XP books I've read, there was little to no discussion of any diagramming tool (there was one which suggested I come up with pseudocodes and some sort of a flowchart...but it did not help me in writing my tests)

• What is the need of functional programming?

  I have read about functional programming which is stateless, gives the same result invocation after invocation, about closures and other related concepts. I still feel that I have very little idea what these things are about. Thinking about this, right now, I feel complete in C, C++, and Java. Any programming problem and I start thinking in one of these languages. So, I never feel and understand the need for functional languages. A good starting point therefore would be to try to understand some things that are not possible in imperative languages but possible in functional languages. I feel unless I understand where exactly functional languages fit inside my already complete world of C, C++ and Java, I would never be able to appreciate and understand them. So, can somebody help me understand the real need for functional programming? Where exactly do they fit in?

  HI all, I'm developing a software to control light show ( through DMX protocol ), i use C# and wpf to develop my main software (.net 4.0) To help people preview their show, i would like to make a live 3D visualizer... First, i thought that i could use wpf 3D to make the visualizer, but i need to work with light .. My main application should send property ( beam angle, orientation (X,Y), position(X,Y), Brush ( color,shape,effect)) to the 3D visualizer But i would like to be able to move light (position in the scene) by mouse during execution and had value in return... So .. Does XNA is the easiest way to doing that ? Can you help me for that : Generating light (orientation , bitmap like filter in front of light ) Dynamically moving object with mouse and get position in return Dynamically add or remove fixture All of your advice, sample, example are very welcome ...   I think of a game as a state machine. Game States separate I/O processing, game logic and rendering into different classes: while (game_loop) { game->state->io_events(this); game->state->logic(this); game->state->rendering(); } You can easily change a game state in this approach. MVC separation works in more complex way: while (game_loop) { game->cotroller->io_events(this); game->model->logic(this); game->view->rendering(); } So changing Game States becomes error prone task (switch 3 MVC objects, not 1). What are practical ways of combining these 2 concepts?

• MATLAB for kids?

  My seven-years old expresses large interest in computers (well, who doesn't? :). Since I'm mostly program in MATLAB, I'm thinking why not to teach him MATLAB. We did a small project with him (he had to solve as many simple arithmetic problems as possible in a limited time) and he get pretty excited. I coded, he watched and then tested. He also likes to do create interesting graphics and simple animations. So, what's next? I would appreciate any ideas for interesting projects, games, graphics? What math concepts he has to understand to program in MATLAB? Or may be you would say it's too early and we should start with something like Logo, Scratch or Alice?

• Switching from web to desktop development

  Being a web developer (php, symfony, doctrine) for 2 years now, I was recently asked by a friend to come up with a desktop solution. So I developed a project, installed a LAMP on his machine and he is mostly happy using it now. But I'm not. It just doesn't seem right to wait for a server response from a localhost. Obviously php isn't suited for desktop development. So, my question is: what language \ framework would you advice a php programmer if he was going to develop a desktop application (something that you can install, that has it's own gui, but utilizes the similar concepts of web apps: css, javascript, orm). I would like to bring up Python as a possible answer to my question. Does anyone have an experience of developing a desktop app with Python, utilizing an ORM and(or) HTML-based GUI?

  hey all, im really new to ASP.Net and still havnt got my head round most of the concepts, im really having problems with variable, when creating a desktop application, any variable created in code for example int n = 10; this variable will be there until the program is running right. but in asp iv created variables which are supposed to last until the user gets of that page, so for example say i have a page which takes the users value ( call this variable n say the user type in 10) and every time the user presses the next button the code add 10 to this value. so the first time the user presses the next button n= n + 10; what i have found is no matter how many times i press the next button n will always equal 20, because the previous value is not saved !! these values are populated the first time the user enters that page, once the user clicks the next button the content of these values disappear! how can stop this from happening ?? hope this makes sense !! thanks

  I would like to create a subscription based website with users getting charged every month. I know I have to create an account with paypal or authorize.net. Do these payment providers automatically bill the user every month? How would I take care of offering the service free for 30 days and start billing after that? Also, I've heard of middle men services like spreedly, chargify. Where do they fit into the equation? Can someone help me wrap my head around these concepts? Considering, I am based in the U.S but would like to have the payment provider accept any kind of currency. Which payment provider do you suggest?

Though the present context is Disease Modelling, I'm not sure if there's such a thing as 'general' modelling and simulation... with concepts / techniques / algorithms that could be used in just about any domain (and not just limited to biology, finance, trade, economic, weather, etc.) Would you have any recommendations that are easy to read by a semi-Math-literate programmer? • Does Team Foundation Server supports Checkpoints?

  My dev team used in the past MKS Source Integrity source control and we are not evaluating to migrate to TFS 2010. Some concepts and meaning are a bit different and we need sometime to learn how to do the same things we do before in TFS or how to change our approach. First of all, we used to do Checkpoints for each software release. MKS in this case does a snapshot of all source code files. You can later compare different checkpoints to see the code differences, or extract a whole checkpoint as a build. Does TFS have a similar feature? Do you know where can I read something about it?
