  • How can I debug a Windows service that crashes?

    - by Christopher
I have a .NET Windows service that appears to be crashing due to C00000005 (access violation--according to Dr Watson). When I attach the VS debugger to it--whether I build it with or without symbols--the VS debugger just stops when the service crashes, instead of stopping to give me a chance to do any investigation. Is that to be expected, or am I doing something wrong? Will using WinDbg let me do something more in real time (obviously, WinDbg lets me do crash dump analysis)? Thanks!

  • How to debug/break in codedom compiled code

    - by Jason Coyne
    I have an application which loads up c# source files dynamically and runs them as plugins. When I am running the main application in debug mode, is it possible to debug into the dynamic assembly? Obviously setting breakpoints is problematic, since the source is not part of the original project, but should I be able to step into, or break on exceptions for the code? Is there a way to get codedom to generate PDBs for this or something? Here is the code I am using for dynamic compliation. CSharpCodeProvider codeProvider = new CSharpCodeProvider(new Dictionary<string, string>() { { "CompilerVersion", "v3.5" } }); //codeProvider. ICodeCompiler icc = codeProvider.CreateCompiler(); CompilerParameters parameters = new CompilerParameters(); parameters.GenerateExecutable = false; parameters.GenerateInMemory = true; parameters.CompilerOptions = string.Format("/lib:\"{0}\"", Application.StartupPath); parameters.ReferencedAssemblies.Add("System.dll"); parameters.ReferencedAssemblies.Add("System.Core.dll"); CompilerResults results = icc.CompileAssemblyFromSource(parameters, Source); DLL.CreateInstance(t.FullName, false, BindingFlags.Default, null, new object[] { engine }, null, null);

  • How to use Firebug's debugger functions?

    - by TK
I don't have an experience with any debugger in any language, but I recently found some videos showing Firebug. I'm now playing with Firebug with a script I included an error with. What I understand now is: I can set a breakpoint, which is shown as a red circle. Firebug stops at the breakpoint and gives me 4 options (Continue, Step Into, Step Over and Step Out). What I don't understand are: What is the difference between the 4 options (i.e., Continue, Step Into, Step Over and Step Out)? To me, Step Over is sometimes similar to Step Into... I could be wrong here. I would be grateful if you could explain the differences of the 4 options.

  • Measuring device drivers CPU/IO utilization caused by my program

    - by Lior Kogan
Sometimes code can utilize device drivers up to the point where the system is unresponsive. Lately I've optimized a WIN32/VC++ code which made the system almost unresponsive. The CPU usage, however, was very low. The reason was 1000's of creations and destruction of GDI objects (pens, brushes, etc.). Once I refactored the code to create all objects only once - the system became responsive again. This leads me to the question: Is there a way to measure CPU/IO usage of device drivers (GPU/disk/etc) for a given program / function / line of code?

  • Getting logging.debug() to work on Google App Engine/Python

    - by brainjam
I'm just getting started on building a Python app for Google App Engine. In the localhost environment I'm trying to send debug info to the GoogleAppEngineLauncher Log Console via logging.debug(), but it isn't showing up. However, anything sent through, say, logging.info() or logging.error() does show up. I've tried a logging.basicConfig(level=logging.DEBUG) before the logging.debug(), but to no avail. What am I missing?

  • C++ LPTSTR to int (but memory overwrite problem using atoi)

    - by Dexter
I have the following code, m_edit is a MFC CEdit (I know I would never use MFC but project demanded it). It's a simple loop, that gets the text from a text edit, converts it to integer after getting the first line, then stores it in m_y vector. LPTSTR szTemp; vector<int> m_y; for(int i = 0; i < m_edit->GetLineCount(); i++){ szTemp = s_y.GetBuffer(0); m_edit->GetLine(i, szTemp); // get line text store in szTemp y = atoi(szTemp); m_y.push_back(y); szTemp = ""; y = 0; } IMPORTANT EXAMPLE: So let's say the CEdit has 6 numbers: 0 5 2 5 18 6 If you use Visual Studio's debugger you will notice an anomaly!! Here's what it shows: y = 0 y = 5 y = 2 y = 5 y = 18 y = 68 Do you see that? szTemp when inserted into atoi, it returns the number 6, but concatenates the 2nd digit of the last number!!! This is why I did szTemp = "";, but the problem persists. Also, let's say the last number was 17 (not 18), then this time debugger would say y = 67, so it is definitely this problem. However, Visual Studio debugger, when you hover over szTemp during this iteration, it says '6' <--- not '68' inside szTemp. So somehow atoi is ruining it. Am I suppose to concatenate a \0 into szTemp before putting it into atoi? How do I solve this easily?

  • What is your favourite Windbg tip/trick?

    - by user15071
I have come to realize that Windbg is a very powerful debugger for the Windows platform & I learn something new about it once in a while. Can fellow Windbg users share some of their mad skills? ps: I am not looking for a nifty command, those can be found in the documentation. How about sharing tips on doing something that one couldn't otherwise imagine could be done with windbg? e.g. Some way to generate statistics about memory allocations when a process is run under windbg.

  • Is there a way to trace through only project source in Delphi?

    - by Justin
I'm using Delphi 2010 and I'm wondering if there's a way to trace through code which is in the project without tracing through calls to included VCLs. For example - you put in a breakpoint and then use Shift+F7 to trace through line-by-line. Now you run into a call to some lengthy procedure in a VCL - in my case it's often a Measurement Studio or other component that draws the doodads for a bunch of I/O, OPC, or other bits. At any rate, what happens is that the debugger hops out of the active source file, opens the component source, and traces through that line by line. Often this is hundreds or thousands of lines of code I don't care about - I just want to have it execute and return to the next source line in MY project. Obviously you can do this by setting breakpoints around every instance of an external call, but often there are too many to make this practical - I'd be spending an hour setting a hundred breakpoints every time I wanted to step through a section of code. Is there a setting or a tool somewhere that can do this? Allow one to trace through code within the project while silently executing code which is external to the project? Thanks in advance, Stack Overflow!

  • Fixing a multi-threaded pycurl crash.

    - by Rook
If I run pycurl in a single thread everything works great. If I run pycurl in 2 threads python will access violate. The first thing I did was report the problem to pycurl, but the project died about 3 years ago so I'm not holding my breath. My (hackish) solution is to build a 2nd version of pycurl called "pycurl_thread" which will only be used by the 2nd thread. I downloaded the pycurl module from sourceforge and I made a total of 4 line changes. But python is still crashing. My guess is that even though this is a module with a different name (import pycurl_thread), its still sharing memory with the original module (import pycurl). How should I solve this problem? Changes in pycurl.c: initpycurl(void) to initpycurl_thread(void) and m = Py_InitModule3("pycurl", curl_methods, module_doc); to m = Py_InitModule3("pycurl_thread", curl_methods, module_doc); Changes in setup.py: PACKAGE = "pycurl" PY_PACKAGE = "curl" to PACKAGE = "pycurl_thread" PY_PACKAGE = "curl_thread" Here is the seg fault i'm getting. • What is this particular type of revelation called?

    - by Lars Haugseth
After struggling with a particular problem or bug in some part of my code for hours, without getting anywhere, I often get a sudden revelation as soon as I try to explain the problem to one of my coworkers, or while formulating it in writing for posting to some forum. Does this kind of experience have a name? Where can I read more about it and how to train it? Do any of you use this consciously in your day-to-day work?

  • Is it normal for C++ static initialization to appear twice in the same backtrace?

    - by Joseph Garvin
I'm trying to debug a C++ program compiled with GCC that freezes at startup. GCC mutex protects function's static local variables, and it appears that waiting to acquire such a lock is why it freezes. How this happens is rather confusing. First module A's static initialization occurs (there are __static_init functions GCC invokes that are visible in the backtrace), which calls a function Foo(), that has a static local variable. The static local variable is an object who's constructor calls through several layers of functions, then suddenly the backtrace has a few ??'s, and then it's is in the static initialization of a second module B (the __static functions occur all over again), which then calls Foo(), but since Foo() never returned the first time the mutex on the local static variable is still set, and it locks. How can one static init trigger another? My first theory was shared libraries -- that module A would be calling some function in module B that would cause module B to load, thus triggering B's static init, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Module A doesn't use module B at all. So I have a second (and horrifying) guess. Say that: Module A uses some templated function or a function in a templated class, e.g. foo<int>::bar() Module B also uses foo<int>::bar() Module A doesn't depend on module B at all At link time, the linker has two instances of foo<int>::bar(), but this is OK because template functions are marked as weak symbols... At runtime, module A calls foo<int>::bar, and the static init of module B is triggered, even though module B doesn't depend on module A! Why? Because the linker decided to go with module B's instance of foo::bar instead of module A's instance at link time. Is this particular scenario valid? Or should one module's static init never trigger static init in another module?

  • #ifdef with gfortran 77

    - by ccook
I am using gfortran to compile FORTRAN 77 and would like to have DEBUG build options by using the preprocessor directive #ifdef. However, when I use them I get compile time warnings "Illegal preprocessor directive". Is it possible to have this functionality without deviating from the standard toolchain?

  • How to debug and detect hang issue

    - by igor
I am testing my application (Windows 7, WinForms, Infragistics controls, C#, .Net 3.5). I have two monitors and my application saves and restores forms' position on the first or second monitors. So I physically switched off second monitor and disabled it at Screen Resolution on the windows display settings form. I need to know it is possible for my application to restore windows positions (for those windows that were saved on the second monitor) to the first one. I switched off second monitor and press Detect to apply hardware changes. Then Windows switched OFF the first monitor for a few seconds to apply new settings. When the first monitor screen came back, my application became unresponsive. My application was launched in debug mode, so I tried to navigate via stack and threads (Visual Studio 2008), paused application, started and did not find any thing that help me to understand why my application is not responsive. Could somebody help my how to detect the source of issue.

  • Program crashes in debugger before anything happens

    - by Tim
I'm building an application for Windows XP using the MinGW tool chain and it sometimes crashes unexpectedly. So, I'm trying to use a debugger (Gdb) but the program exits with code 03 before anything happens. In fact, all I see from GDB is: [New thread 3184.0x7b8][New thread 3184.0xef8] Program exited with code 03. My suspicion is that there is some failed dynamic linking of a dependency (which are Qt, VTK, and ITK, all built with MinGW). However, this does not happen when I just run the program normally. Or if it happens, it appears to be intermittent and well after the program is launched and running. NOTE: I'm also using Cmake for cross compiling. What should I do? What can I try?

  • Why won't this Jquery run on IE?

I have a funny feeling IE doesn't support attr? Can anyone offer any advice?

  • Renaming Functions during runtime in PHP.

    - by The Rook
In PHP 5.3 is there a way to rename a function or "hook" a function. There is the rename_function() within "APD" which has been broken since ~2004. If you try and build it on PHP 5.3 you'll get this error: 'struct _zend_compiler_globals' has no member named 'extended_info' This is a really easy error to fix, just change this line: GC(extended_info) = 1; to CG(compiler_options) |= ZEND_COMPILE_EXTENDED_INFO; I modified my php.ini and the APD shows up in my phpinfo() as it should. However when i call rename_function() the PHP page doesn't load and I get a segmentation fault in my /var/log/apache2/error.log. Is there anyway to fix APD to work with a modern version of PHP? Or is there another method to rename functions? Why on earth is vital feature not in php!??!?! (Gotta love python :)

  • Can I configure NUnit so that Debug.Fail doesn't show a message box when I run my tests?

  • What do you call using print statements to debug code?

    - by vgm64
I'm just curious, but is there a name for the process using print statements to debug your code? An example in pseudocode x=3.2e39 print x y = function1(x) print y z = function2(y) print z w = function3(z) print w Executation: 3.2e39 3.2e36 NaN NaN reveals some bad math in function2. If there's no standard name, what do you call it?
