  • Enabling DNS for IPv6 infrastructure

    After successful automatic distribution of IPv6 address information via DHCPv6 in your local network it might be time to start offering some more services. Usually, we would use host names in order to communicate with other machines instead of their bare IPv6 addresses. During the following paragraphs we are going to enable our own DNS name server with IPv6 address resolving. This is the third article in a series on IPv6 configuration: Configure IPv6 on your Linux system DHCPv6: Provide IPv6 information in your local network Enabling DNS for IPv6 infrastructure Accessing your web server via IPv6 Piece of advice: This is based on my findings on the internet while reading other people's helpful articles and going through a couple of man-pages on my local system. What's your name and your IPv6 address? $ sudo service bind9 status * bind9 is running If the service is not recognised, you have to install it first on your system. This is done very easy and quickly like so: $ sudo apt-get install bind9 Once again, there is no specialised package for IPv6. Just the regular application is good to go. But of course, it is necessary to enable IPv6 binding in the options. Let's fire up a text editor and modify the configuration file. $ sudo nano /etc/bind/named.conf.optionsacl iosnet {        127.0.0.1;        192.168.1.0/24;        ::1/128;        2001:db8:bad:a55::/64;};listen-on { iosnet; };listen-on-v6 { any; };allow-query { iosnet; };allow-transfer { iosnet; }; Most important directive is the listen-on-v6. This will enable your named to bind to your IPv6 addresses specified on your system. Easiest is to specify any as value, and named will bind to all available IPv6 addresses during start. More details and explanations are found in the man-pages of named.conf. Save the file and restart the named service. As usual, check your log files and correct your configuration in case of any logged error messages. Okay, now it's about time to resolve host names and their assigned IPv6 addresses using our own DNS name server. $ host -t aaaa www.6bone.net 2001:db8:bad:a55::2Using domain server:Name: 2001:db8:bad:a55::2Address: 2001:db8:bad:a55::2#53Aliases: www.6bone.net is an alias for 6bone.net.6bone.net has IPv6 address 2001:5c0:1000:10::2 Alright, our newly configured BIND named is fully operational. Eventually, you might be more familiar with the dig command. Here is the same kind of IPv6 host name resolve but it will provide more details about that particular host as well as the domain in general. $ dig @2001:db8:bad:a55::2 www.6bone.net. AAAA More details on the Berkeley Internet Name Domain (bind) daemon and IPv6 are available in Chapter 22.1 of Peter Bieringer's HOWTO on IPv6. Setting up your own DNS zone Now, that we have an operational named in place, it's about time to implement and configure our own host names and IPv6 address resolving. The general approach is to create your own zone database below the bind folder and to add AAAA records for your hosts. In order to achieve this, we have to define the zone first in the configuration file named.conf.local. $ sudo nano /etc/bind/named.conf.local //// Do any local configuration here//zone "ios.mu" {        type master;        file "/etc/bind/zones/db.ios.mu";}; Here we specify the location of our zone database file. Next, we are going to create it and add our host names, our IP and our IPv6 addresses. $ sudo nano /etc/bind/zones/db.ios.mu $ORIGIN .$TTL 259200     ; 3 daysios.mu                  IN SOA  ios.mu. hostmaster.ios.mu. Note: Each time you are going to change your zone databases you have to modify the serial information, too. Named loads the plain text zone definitions and converts them into an internal, indexed binary format to improve lookup performance. If you forget to change your serial then named will not use the new records from the text file but the indexed ones. Or you have to flush the index and force a reload of the zone. This can be done easily by either restarting the named: $ sudo service bind9 restart or by reloading the configuration file using the name server control utility - rndc: $ sudo rndc reconfig Check your log files for any error messages and whether the new zone database has been accepted. Next, we are going to resolve a host name trying to get its IPv6 address like so: $ host -t aaaa server.ios.mu. 2001:db8:bad:a55::2Using domain server:Name: 2001:db8:bad:a55::2Address: 2001:db8:bad:a55::2#53Aliases: server.ios.mu has IPv6 address 2001:db8:bad:a55::2 Looks good. Alternatively, you could have just ping'd the system as well using the ping6 command instead of the regular ping: $ ping6 serverPING server(2001:db8:bad:a55::2) 56 data bytes64 bytes from 2001:db8:bad:a55::2: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.615 ms64 bytes from 2001:db8:bad:a55::2: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.407 ms^C--- ios1 ping statistics ---2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1001msrtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.407/0.511/0.615/0.104 ms That also looks promising to me. You can retrieve the file from downloading here. You will find the file in the "DynamicQuery" folder. That file will give you the ability to utilized dynamic ORDERBY clause since we don't know what column we're filtering by except on the initial load. To serialize the JSON back from the C-sharp to the JS, I incorporated the James Newton-King JSON.net DLL found here : http://json.codeplex.com/releases/view/37810.   • C# Open Source/Free Social Networking SDK

    I am currently gathering some technology requirements for a site that will be a social network based. I don't want to re-invent the wheel so i am looking for some type of SDK or collection of tools that can provide me with a way of creating/managing a social network. I understand that no framework will probably fit my exact needs so I am also looking for a flexible/extendable framework. An example extension point would be allowing the user to provide sub networks, maybe a global network that could be sub classified as work and friends. Beyond that it would also be nice to somehow be able to import contacts from other networking sites (Facebook, Linked In, etc). My current technology suite will more than likely consist of the following: IIS 7.0 WCF Data Services SQL Server 2006 ASP.NET front end. So my two questions are 1) C# Open Source Social Network SDK 2) C# Open Source Social Netowrk APIs (facebook, linked in, etc) If there is any more information you may need please let me know.

    I have an application with numerous WCF services that make use of LINQ-To-SQL as the data access model. I am having lots of problems with the "DataContext accessed after Dispose" exception. I understand what this exception is and that it is occurring because I have not "initialised" the data that is trying to be accessed. I've read many articles that suggest that I called ToList() on any arrays before the parent object is returned by the service. My issue is that I am getting this exception and I don't know where it is originating from and therefore I don't know what hasn't been initialised. Can anyone advise how best to identify the root cause? (I have used the MS Service Trace Viewer and this doesn't seem to give me any further information)

If I download the nerddinner application and follow the dependancies, I can see that the OpenAuth library they use has this method. However, getting the newest version from http://www.dotnetopenauth.net/ - the library does not have this method. Any ideas on what happened to it, and what I should use instead?

    Guys, In Our project I have used LINQ to SQL for every kind of database interaction. Now from what I know , When I create and use DataContext object : it opens the connection , crates a transaction , perform the query and closes the connection. Every now and then we are getting Connection pool error on our services and Server. " The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached. " Any idea ? Am I completely off here ? Is this related to SQL Server itself ? We are using LINQ , .Net 3.5 and Sql Server 2008 NOTE: NO DATAREADER IS BEING USED ANYWHERE IN SYSTEM. Thanks

  • Cannot find System.Web.Script.Service namespace error after upgrading to Visual studio 2010

    I've just upgraded a VS 2008 project to VS 2010, converting the project but keeping the target as .NET 3.5 (SP1 is installed). My project worked without issue under VS 2008 on another machine. I've added references to System.Web.Extensions.dll but I'm still getting the following errors from code in the App_Code folder: 1) Cannot find System.Web.Script.Service namespace 2) Type 'System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService' is not defined. 3) Type 'System.Runtime.Serialization.Json.DataContractJsonSerializer' is not defined. Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be as I'm pretty stumped? :(

    Hi there, What is the better approach for load balancing on web servers? My services run in .NET and Mono, so they could be hosted on IIS or Apache2, and the will have to provide SSL connection. I've read two main approaches, store the state in a common server and use sticky sessions, there is any other else? I've read 3 diffent things about sticky sessions: 1)the load balancing device will know with which server did you start the connection and all the further connections from that host will be routed to the same server. 2)the load balancing devide read a cookie named: JSESSIONID 3)the load balancing devide read a cookie named: ASPSESSIONID I'm a little bit confused, what will happen exactly? As the connections will be SSL there is not a chance for the load balancing devide of read the cookies, so then what? About store the estate in a common server, what solutions do you know? I've read memcache is a good solution but is there any other else? Cheers.

    I have a .NET 3.5 based web service running at http://localhost/serivce.svc/. Then I have an ASP.NET application running at http://localhost/myApp. In Application_Load my application reads some XML configuration from the web service. That works fine on my machine, but: On Windows Vista with IIS 7 the request to the web services fails. The web service can be accessed via the browser without any problem. I configured the app pool of my application to run as admin. I added the admin to the IIS_USRS group, but it still cannot access the web service. impersonate=true/false seems not to make a difference.

  • Roll up project-level tasks to the project collection portal in TFS2010

    I have a Project Collection setup in my TFS2010RC deployment. I have two Projects setup under this collection with their own task lists, which are populated with data. I fully expected the tasks from these individual projects to "roll up" and appear in the task list at the Project Collection level, but they do not. The Project Collection task list is empty. Basically, I'm looking to provide a view so a supervisor could see all tasks across projects quickly and easily. I'm sure I could write a reporting services report, but it seems like this is something so basic that it would have been included and it just need to be turned on or something. I'm sure I'm probably missing something really simple here. Thanks.

ActivityManager.restartPackage method has been deprecated and the description is: the previous behavior here is no longer available to applications because it allows them to break other applications by removing their alarms, stopping their services, etc. Instead 2.2 has given another tool for pesky "task killer" apps by introducing new ActivityManager.killBackgroundProcesses method. More Info Can someone explain whether ActivityManager.killBackgroundProcesses will kill our scheduled alarms? If so, deprecating ActivityManager.restartPackage was pointless as "task killer" will now abuse ActivityManager.killBackgroundProcesses.

When I setup the references in TestProj.Core the wizard gave me an app.config and through an application settings section into it. How do I get these settings to my web app? Copy and paste these into web.config? "Always Copy" the app.config out to the bin directory? Any good articles on mutiple configs?

    I have been trying to user sharepoint designer to retrieve the user's full name and even the domain\username from the people pucker field but the problem is I tend to get numbers. It looks like the intetrnal Id. In my case I am getting 14 instead of domain\username from the list form's field. Any idea on where I can get the dmain\username or even better the full name? Thanks !! I am using SharePoint Designer and Windows Sharepoint Services 3/SharePoint 2007. Update : I have managed to get the domain\username now. I just had to change the people picker's show field to ID. However now I am getting a weird prefix on my domain\username. I am getting this -1;#domain\username instead of just domain\username. Anybody know how I can overcome this? Thanks !!

    I have an SQL Server integration Services (SSIS) package using the standard Event Log provider (yes, the event log! I know we can use SQL etc...) The default "Source" of the log events is "SQLISPackage100" but I want it to be something like "AppName" so that the errors are more visible between the different packages when viewing the event log (also for MOM use). Event Type: Error Event Source: SQLISPackage100 Event Category: None ... Description: Package "Foo" failed. I hope the answer is simple, I simply cannot find it, but does anyone know how to change the text of the Event Log Source name to something more meaningful? PK :-)

    I would like to use DirectoryServices to list and recycle App Pools hosted on any machine in my Workgroup. My approach is similar to some of the answers posted to this question,but in my case I'd like to do this for a remote machine running IIS 6. I'm prototyping this as a console app but will eventually be providing a web interface to allow recycling a selected app pool for a specified machine. Where can I specify the credentials to use for making Directory Services call to a remote machine. I hope I'm phrasing this correctly.
