• Windows service - supplying arguments in "path to executable"

  I cannot figure out how to pass (constant) arguments into my Windows service when it is started. I'm using the standard .NET classes like ServiceBase to implement (and ServiceProcessInstaller and ServiceInstaller to install) my service. On the general tab of a Windows Service properties dialog box (once installed), there's a "Path to executable" in which I can see that some of the standard Windows services have command line arguments specified. System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.OnStart takes string[] args, which I presume would enable these arguments to be accessed from within .NET code. Are there some properties on ServiceProcessInstaller or ServiceInstaller that I can set to allow me to pass startup arguments to my own service, or does anyone know how it's supposed to be done?

  I see plenty of tutorials and articles showing me how to make a simple windows program, which is great but none of them show me how to make multiple windows. Right now I have working code that creates and draws a layered window and I can blit stuff using GDI to draw anything I want on it, drag it around, even make it transparent, etc. But I wanted a second rectangular area that I can draw to, drag around, etc. In other words, a second window. Probably want it to be a child window. Question is, how do I make it? Also, if anybody knows any good resources (online preferably) like articles or tutorials for window management in the Windows API, please share.

As the title says, we are wondering if (fully) enabling automated Windows Updates on our developer machines will have implications for MS Visual Studio. That is, will any fixes to any components (be it libraries, UI/IDE, compiler, ...) ever be updated through Windows Update? We want to have 100% exact and reproducible development environments (wrt C++) on all developer machines, and so we are concerned that automated Windows updates may introduce some uncontrolled updates into our development chain.

I need to authenticate users against a Windows AD and the web application should only allow logins from members of group X, otherwise it should redirect to an error page. How can I configure this? Also, I would like to display the name of the logged-in user on all pages, not the name of the Windows user of the server machine. I have tried the System.property("user.name") for this, but this only returns the name of the Windows user of the server name.

  I am writing a graphical git frontend for Linux and Windows (MSEgit) based on MSEide+MSEgui. MSEgit has an internal console window which communicates with git by pipes. On Linux it uses a PTY so SSH asks for key unlocking passwords on the PTY. On Windows I wrote a small password entry application and set the SSH_ASKPASS environment variable accordingly. SSH calls the password application if git is started with CreateProcess() dwCreationFlags DETACHED_PROCESS set but the password entry window will not be focused, its taskbar icon flashes instead. SSH does not run the password application if FreeConsole() is called to be sure that there is no attached console to MSEgit and git is started without DETACHED_PROCESS but CREATE_NO_WINDOW instead. I assume a Windows equivalent of POSIX setsid() should be called. How can I force SSH to use SSH_ASKPASS without the DETACHED_PROCESS flag? If this is not possible, how can I ensure that the password entry window is focused?

  I have 2 databases. One is properties and the other is dates. In dates I have associated the land_id and a date (In YYYYMMDD format) which means that the date is not available. I need to formulate a query that a user can specify a start and end date, and then choose a property for which dates are available (not in the date database). How do airline and hotel websites do this kind of logic? I was thinking about taking the date range and picking all days in between and doing a query where the dates do not match and ordering it by number of results, but I can see how that could easily turn into an intense query. (also for the learning experience) Ive been looking all over MSDN, for a windows API that lists dll dependencies of an executable, or even the storage format in the complied exe (just to filter it out), but I've been unable to find anything. If anyone knows what API call windows uses for listing modules to load, or what patterns I can search for in an executable to find modules to load, please help me out :) thanks! -note: I'm not looking to profile for dynamic modules, just list the ones that are required at runtime

  I need to export the private key of a self-created SSL-certificate on a Windows Server 2008. However at Microsoft Management Console (the certificate is located, if it matter, in Personal-Certificate folder) the option "Yes, export the private key" is greyed out. Reading the provided help section it tells that the certificate needed to "be made exportable" during creation. However it also says that it is ONLY a limitation if it was created using Windows Server 2003. It doesn´t say anything how to fix it though on a Windows 2008 Server. The certificate is self-signed. I want to export to PKCS12 format. I´m accessing MMC as administrator so there should not be any permission issues. How can I make this certificate "exportable"?

  Hi. I am wondering if it is possible to create an application that could receive a notification when any other application/window is docked with the new windows 7 docking feature (f.ex. Winkey + left arrow) The purpose of my application would be to set up custom rules for certain windows. So for example if I am using Chrome and I press the Win+LEFT keys, then my application would receive a notification, and would be able to say that the window should not resize to 50% of the screen, but should use 70%. I am not very familiar with writing windows applications (mostly do web), so any pointers at how this might be achieved are very welcome. Thanks.

I need code to read a date from a text file (could be the only line in the text file or the date could be included in the filename, I control the process that generates the file) The code would then need to evaluate the text file date against the current date to confirm that the text file date is from the prior month. I'm starting to build a process to be able to run 1st-of-the-month jobs once the monthly data has been refreshed. I'm new to building this kind of process using batch/script files. Unfortunately, we discovered that it does NOT capture any packets on dialup (e.g. PPP) connections on Windows 7, and that there are no near-term plans for enabling this (1). So we need something else. Microsoft Network Monitor and Windows Packet Filter are two options that surfaced during a bit of googling, but before delving into research I wanted to ask the experienced: what are out options, given the following requirements: Capture all in/outbound IP packets on the machine.   I want to pin a WPF window on the desktop (it should be a desktop gadget). I know you can do this by setting the parent handle of the WPF window to the handle of the "progman" window. But this does not prevent the hiding of the WPF window when "Windows + D" is pressed. There must be another way do to this. The new desktop gadgets in Windows 7 are not hidden when "Windows + D" is pressed. How did the MS developers achieve this?

• Windows service only gets called when Visual Studio is attached to process

  I've created a simple windows service in C# using Visual Studio 2010. It uses a TcpListener and socket to listen for messages on a given port. This worked absolutely perfectly when my laptop had Windows Vista on it. However, since upgrading to Windows 7 and re-installing my service it only responds if I'm attached to the process and debugging in Visual Studio 2010 - at which time it behaves as expected. I've tried running the service under my (administrator) credentials and setting the exe to run as administrator. I've also checked "Allow service to interact with desktop" when it was running under the Local System account. I'm testing using both a test console app and an Adobe Air application - both with the same results. Are there some specific permissions that I need to allow the service to be called?

• Detecting metadata-only read requests in windows filesystem

  Hello, I'm developing a kind of filesystem driver. All of read requests that windows makes to my filesystem goes by the driver implementation. I would like to distinguish between "normal" read requests and those who want to get only the metadata from the file. ( Windows reads first 4K of the file and then stop reading ). Does Windows mark this metadata reads in some way? It would be very useful in order to treat that two kind of operations in a different way. In a typical CreateFile call, we have AccessMode, ShareMode, CreationDisposition and FlagsAndAttributes parameters ( being DWORD ), i'm not sure if it's possible to extract some clue of the operation requested. • View OS X Desktop on windows remotely at higher resolution then hosting machine

  I have a new macbook air 11, which I do some web based programming on, I have a windows box with a 1920x1200 display which I'd like to use to view the mac desktop and keep working at home when I can - taking advantage of the higher resolution screen and full sized keyboard/mouse. I don't think VNC or such is the answer I'm looking for as it would restrict the display to the airs 1366x768 - negating the main benefit more lines of text on screen. From some rudimentary googleing I think I'm after some sort of x-windows / x-11 remote display. But I'm not a Linux user and any discussion seems to be about linux os x or windows Linux setups. Can anyone provide a clear set of instructions on how to do this or an application that can do this.

  In window, i can get the date created of the video from properties(right click). I have a few idea on this but i dont know how to do it. 1. Get the video information directly from video(like in windows), 2. By extracting the video name to get the date created(The video's name is in date format, which is the time it created). And i also using taglib-sharp to get the video duration and resolution, but i cant find any sample code on how to get the video creation date. I want to iterate through the file and append each line to a common variable, that can be passed to a command line tool. • .NET applications sometimes doesn’t work on Windows CE

  Hi, I write applications for Windowe ME and CE in C# .NET 2.0. Sometimes I’ve got problems because applications don’t work on some navigation devices. On Windowe ME it is not problem because .NET can be installed from a cab, but on most Windows CE devices it is impossible because after soft reset all changes disappear. I found out that in most difficult cases good solution is to put all dll-s belonging to .NET installation cab in the folder where the application runs and everything work well. However there are some devices for example Navroad NR460 (Windows CE 5.0) on which none of .NET applications work (it is funny because previous and next version of that navigation works well). I didn’t found on this device cgacutil.exe program. Is this possible to force the device to run any .NET application without installing the Windows again? What should I try to do to check if running .NET a applications is possible? What conditions should be fulfilled to run easiest application written even in .NET 1.0

  Greetings. I am querying tables from Microsoft SQL 2008 which have date split across 3 columns: day, month and year. Unfortunately, I do not have control over this because data is coming in to the database daily from a 3rd party source in that format. I need to add between to a where clause so user can pull records within a range. Would be easy enough if date was in a single column but finding it nearly impossible when its split across three columns. To display the date, I am doing a CAST( CAST(year as varchar(4)) + '-' + CAST(month as varchar(2)) + '-' + CAST(day as varchar(2)) as date) AS "date"` in a select. I tried to put it as a parameter for datediff function or just the regular between but get no results. Thanks for any help.
