  I have a machine with VS 2008/Sql 2008 already installed. I now need to install an instance of vs 2005/Sql 2005 for two reasons. The main reason is for reporting Services 2005. All of the report servers are sql 2005. Now to create a SSRS compatible with 2005 do I just need to install Sql Server 2005 and work with it in VS 2008 or do I also need to install VS 2005. The second reason is the off-site team that I am consulting with do not want the project upgraded yet. So without rebuilding the whole box is there a safe way to install VS 2005 on a box that already contains 2008? Same question for Sql Server 2005? Thanks

  I'm writing a set of WCF services that rely on transport security with Windows Authentication using the trusted subsystem model. However, I want to perform authorization based on the original client user that initiated the request (e.g. a user from a website with a username/password). I'm planning to achieve this by adding the original user's credentials in the header before the client sends the message and then the service will use the supplied credentials to authorize the user. So I have a few questions about this implementation: 1) using transport security with windows auth, I do NOT need to worry about again encrypting the passed credentials to ensure the validity... WCF automatically takes care of this - is this correct? 2) how does this implementation prevent a malicious service, running under some windows account within the domain, to send a message tagged with spoofed credentials. for e.g. a malicious service replaces the credentials with an Admin user to do something bad? Now I really don't know what specifying a proxy server address might have to do with absolute or relative URIs. The use of the proxy server or not is the only difference I can see when running the client on the production or on the development machine.   Hi, I am developing an application suite where users will need to connect to a server and depending on their account type they will be given some services. The server will run Linux. Can you please suggest me some user management API which I can use to develop the server program? By user management I mean user authentication and other related functionalities. I prefer to work in C++ or python, but any other language should not be a problem. Please note that this application suite is not web based. Their WSDL has all of the operations defined with soapAction="", so my service needs to do the same. Unfortunately, I'm getting the error: The operations A and B have the same action (). Every operation must have a unique action value. In ASMX web services, there was a mode where the soapAction would not be used, but the name of the request element would be used instead. Is there some way using WCF not only to dispatch on the request element, but also to emit a WSDL with no soapAction?

• SSRS 2005 Matrix and border styles when exporting to XLS

  The Matrix in SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services 2005) seems to have issues with certain the border styles when exporting to XLS (but not PDF or web view; maybe other formats, not sure?). For example: Create a matrix and set the Matrix border style to Black Solid 1px, but all 4 of the cells to have a border style of Black None 1px. When viewed via the ASP.NET control, it looks correct. But after export to XLS, it creates borders around all of the header cells (column and row headers, and the top left cell), and even the right most data column. But all the cells in the middle of the report correctly have no border set. Update: If the Matrix borders are set to None, then the borders on the cells don't show up in XLS. So, how do you set an outer border around the Matrix, but not have it apply the 'all sides' border to every cell that touches the edge of the Matrix when exported to Excel?

• Read Song Title/Artist from a live audio stream with Silverlight 4?

  I have a SL4 project that is successfully streaming a great sounding WMA audio stream from a remote location. All of the MediaElement actions are straight forward. What I want to do is read the attributes that are passed as text along with the Audio stream. For instance the encoder of the stream embeds the title of the stream, the title of the song playing and the name of the artist for the current song. How would I pick this out using Silverlight 4 and then display it in a Label to the user? It sure would be easier than writing a bunch of web services to do the same thing. Windows Media Player and WinAmp all get the information I am just not seeing it in the MediaElement object collection.

  In SQL Server Reporting Services 2005, how can I filter a nested table within a list? I have 2 datasets. The first, datasetHeader, contains one row per account. The second, datasetDetails contains multiple rows per account. Control: Dataset name List: datasetHeader Table: datasetDetails The table is placed within the list. When I attempt to filter on the table, I get fields from datasetHeader instead of datasetDetails. Previously I had the table within a subreport, and I had that working by using parameters; however, I needed to pull it into the main report because of the implied KeepTogether=true property for subreports that was causing undesired pagination.

• Why does my .NET Windows service not start automatically sometimes?

  Hi all, I have modified a working Windows service that had always been starting beforehand. After adding the System.Management reference it now sometimes will not start automatically. I get the following error: Service cannot be started. System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80010002): Call was canceled by the message filter. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010002 (RPC_E_CALL_CANCELED)) I found another post here on SO with someone having the same issue. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/998883/why-wont-my-net-windows-service-start-automatically-after-a-reboot However, the proposed solution was to have the service start after the services it depends on have started. However, when I go to the Dependencies tab for my service, I see: Should I just use the workaround method of putting the thread to sleep, or is there a more proper way of getting this service to start correctly?   I think my career has entered a vicious circle which I would like to exit: I am best at what I hate most. And because I am good at that, I always receive that kind of assignments, and I do them as expected or even better. Which makes me more of an expert and brings me more similar tasks. My "expertise" is what (I think) every programmer hates: legacy systems. I can very quickly learn systems, and modify them, migrate them, extract web services from them whatever (without breaking them). Never to develop more functionality or to solve interesting or original problems. Just have that work with Java 1.4, or convert it into a rest-full service or support oracle too. I feel (and I am told) that I am highly regarded and very helpful to my company. But I hate what I do. What would you do in my place?

• MVC.NET project won't start under IIS 5.1 on Windows XP SP3

  I've a MVC.NET 2 project that runs fine under Windows 7 and will start on Windows XP if I use the Visual Studio Development Server, however, starting under IIS generates an error: Unable to start debugging on the web server With the message The specified procedure could not be found No errors in the system event viewer. If I start without debugging I get an "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error" The reason I run it under IIS is the project also includes some WCF wsHttp web services that use certificates, so the VS Development Server is not adequate for hosting those. I have already seen the links on SO that talk about adding the wildcard mapping. I've already done that, just as I've done on Windows Server 2003 where I successfully host MVC.NET RC2 for quite a while.

  I've found this tutorial about installing Alfresco on WSO2 Appserver. http://sanjeewamalalgoda.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-to-install-alfresco-on-wso2.html Does this mean I can delegate authentication to the wso2 security configuration also? I wouldn't want to have to manage security in both places separately. If I were to deploy Alfresco in wso2 I would want to use the wso2 Identity Server for authentication. I was thinking about Alfresco running in wso2 Appserver using identity server for authentication and ESB for the Alfresco services. Is this approach suitable for other apps as well? Is that possible?

  I am currently gathering some technology requirements for a site that will be a social network based. I don't want to re-invent the wheel so i am looking for some type of SDK or collection of tools that can provide me with a way of creating/managing a social network. I understand that no framework will probably fit my exact needs so I am also looking for a flexible/extendable framework. An example extension point would be allowing the user to provide sub networks, maybe a global network that could be sub classified as work and friends. Beyond that it would also be nice to somehow be able to import contacts from other networking sites (Facebook, Linked In, etc). My current technology suite will consist of the following: IIS 7.0 WCF Data Services SQL Server 2006 ASP.NET front end. If there is any more information you may need please let me know.

  I cannot get NLogViewer to receive msgs from local machine. My machine is Windows 7. I am able to get a remote machine to send NLog messages to my local box and NLogViewer on my local box shows the message fine. But, if I run an app locally, and config NLog to spit messages to my local box, NLogViewer doesn't get the messages.   Hi, this is my first question, so sorry if the form is wrong! I'm trying to make thrift server (python) and client (c++). However I need to exchange messages in both direction. Client should register (call server's function and wait), and server should listen on same port for N (N- 100k) incoming connections (clients). After some conditions are satisfied, server needs to call functions on each client and collect results and interpret them. I'm little confused, and first questions is "can this be done in Thrift"? Second question is related to mechanism that will allow me bidirectional communication. I guess that I will need two services. One with client's functions other with server's. But I'm confused with calling code. I understand one way communication (calling functions from server), but with calling functions from client side I have a problem. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

  Any help is appreciated: I'm developing a C#.Net app in VS2010 that interacts with Excel. The app works correctly on my local machine. Uploading to a remote Windows 2003 server however, breaks the app. Originally, I received the following message Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80070005 After Googling the problem (which suggested a permissions problem) i tried this: Installing Excel 2007 Going into Component Services on the remote server and following the instructions here: http://blog.crowe.co.nz/archive/2006/03/02/589.aspx Now I get this message on the same operation: Exception from HRESULT: 0x800A03EC Google searches seem to be suggesting that this is a version match error. However, both the local machine and the remote server use Excel 2007. Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks in advance. -Daniel

• Schema compare with MS Data Tools in VS2008

  When performing a schema compare having db_owner rights on the target database results in the following error: The user does not have permission to perform this action. Using the SQL Server Profiler I figured out this error occurs executing a query targeting the master db view: [sys].[dm_database_encryption_keys] While specifically ignoring all object types but Tables one would presume the SQL Compare doesn't need access to the db encryption keys. Also note: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vstsdb/thread/c11a5f8a-b9cc-454f-ba77-e1c69141d64b/ One solution would be to GRANT VIEW SERVER STATE to the db user, but in my case I'm not hosting the database services and won't get the rights to the server state. • Visual C# 2008 Express connection to SQL Server 2008 Express problem

  Hi guys, I have a problem with Visual C# 2008 express (SP1) connecting to SQL Server 2008 express. The "Add Connection" window (wherever initiated) doesn't list existing sql server and no option for sql server except a compact edition. Note that, I've got the VWD 2008 express (SP1) on the same machine which shows the window regularly (with SQL server listed) and SQL Server Management studio works fine with the server as well. I've seen other similar posts, did take some advices: reinstalled the VC#, services run ok, etc... but with no success with VC# so far. Again, on the same machine the VWD shows the dialog with sql server option regularly, but VC# shows only 3 options in "Change data source" dialog (1. Microsoft Access Database File (OLE DB) 2. Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5, 3. Microsoft SQL Server Database File) Any idea? Thanks in advice, Phil
