• Connecting to SQL database using SQLCMD

  As we all know, there are a number of ways you can connect to your SQL Azure Database. One of the quick options is to try to connect to SQL server is SQLCMD. To start the SQLCMD utility and connect to a named instance of SQL Server Open a Command Prompt window, and type sqlcmd -S myServer\instanceName. Replace myServer\instanceName with the name of the computer and the instance of SQL Server that you want to connect to. Press ENTER. The sqlcmd prompt (1>) indicates that you are connected to the specified instance of SQL Server. SQL Management Studio offers the facility to use SQLCMD from within SQL scripts by using SQLCMD Mode. How to: Enable SQLCMD mode in the Transact-SQL Editor (About how to start the editor, see How to: Start the Transact-SQL Editor.) To toggle SQLCMD mode from the Data menu 1. • Weird canvas/page size printing problem in Adobe Acrobat

  I am trying to print a document in Adobe Acrobat. For some reason, Acrobat wants to print my document smaller than it actually is, despite having chosen that I DO NOT want the image to be scaled: http://www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?945fbb3f41.png See the grey area on the top and left of the preview? That's the area that's getting cut off. Notice that the whole preview (INCLUDING the gray areas) is 8.5x11 in. Also look at the paper size, a nice 8.5x11 in. This happens for any real printer I connect to my computer. However, printing to a "fake" software printer is not a problem: Printing to a software printer: Use the above link but change the image name to this: 769eaf59ab.png Any ideas? I've tried messing with the paper sizes but no luck. I can't use "Shrink to printable area" because ultimately I'm doing this to print to a preprinted form (the same issue occurs when I select "Form fields only" but this demonstrates it better).

• Retro Video Game Collection

  Recently I've decided, in true nerd fashion, to collect either comic books or video games.  Considering I'm much more versed in the technological arts and not in ACTUAL art, I thought collecting old video games would be an interesting venture.  After all, I am a self-described compulsive shopper (my bank statement at the end of the month has a purchase every few days).  (Don't worry, I'm not in debt and still pay my bills on time!) I went to a local video game store in Stevens Point called Gaming Generations which is a neat little shop with loads of old games for great prices.  For example, any NES cartridge on the shelf (not behind glass) is, at most, $4.99 with the cheaper ones around $1.99.  During my first round at GG, I picked up the following: NES: - Fester's Quest - Adventures of Link (Zelda 2, grey cart) - Little Nemo - Total Recall - The Goonies 2 PSX: - Galerians N64: - Mission: Impossible - Hybrid Heaven I was a little cautious, would I even like collecting old games?  As soon as I popped a few of those games in I knew right away the answer was an astounding YES!  Not only is it fun to bring back memories of all these old games, but searching for them in stores is also a blast and saying 'I have that one, I need the second one.' After finding such joy in buying these games, I decided to go search through 4-5 stores in Wausau for old games as well.  While the prices were a bit higher and selection smaller, the search was still fun.  I found the following: NES: - Maniac Mansion - T&C Surf - Chip N Dale: Rescue Rangers - TMNT (the first one) - Mission: Impossible N64: - Turok - Turok 2 Genesis: - Sonic the Hedgehog Dreamcast: - Shenmue And I found a Gamegear for $5!  Now I just need to find games for it... Tonight I will go on one more small expedition into the used, once again stopping at GG and another second hand store to see if I can find any items for my collection.

Customers are buying iPhones, iPads, Android devices, and many other mobile computing devices at an ever increasing record pace. Devices based on iOS and Android are nearly 80 percent of the marketplace. RIM continues to be dominant in the business area across the world. Nokia's growth with Windows Phone will grow on a worldwide basis. At the same time, clearly web development is a tremendous driver of applications, both on the public Internet and on private networks. How can developers target these various mobile platforms with web technologies? Developers can write web applications that take advantage of each mobile platform, but that is a lot of work. Into this space, the jQuery Mobile framework was developed. • What's wrong with my custom patch cables?

  I have a box of bulk Cat5e riser cable left over from when I had my house wired. I figured I could use this to make some custom length cables for connecting my computers, switches, etc. I had a crimper already so I bought a bag of RJ45 plugs. I made a few cables several years ago, but my experience/knowledge with this sort of thing is minimal. None of my cables are working. I don't have a tester so I just plug the cable into a computer and switch but I get no link light. I wired them them all straight-through and visual inspection doesn't show any problems. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

  I started using 'rlwrap' some monthes ago like one of my colleague does.bash-like features in sqlplus, rman and other Oracle command line tools (Oracle Luxembourg Core Tech' Blog by Gilles Haro)One can find specific Oracle extension for databases 9i, 10g and 11g (keyword textfile) over here. This will avoid you the need to create this .oracle_keywords file.There is 'rman' keyword file in the link above. • apache redirect based on referrer

  I've just noticed that schoolmate.r09.railsrumble.com seems to be doing a rewrite to one of my domains, agilegrad.com. This is kind of annoying since that site is the top hit on google when searching for my domain and the address bar stays as schoolmate.r09.railsrumble.com when following the link. I'd like to redirect incoming requests with schoolmate.r09.railsrumble.com in the referrer variable to agilegrad.com, but the following in my vhost config for agilegrad.com isn't working for me: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} railsrumble RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://www.agilegrad.com/$1 [L,R=301] With this on, I see a bunch of redirects in my access log, but only for static files (cs, javascript). This is the first time I've tried using mod_rewrite, so I'm not even sure if I can accomplish what I want, which is to do a full redirect to my domain and have it appear to the user that they are at agilegrad.com.

  Hi, I do a lot of sketching with my pen-tablet. I use MS Paint in Windows 7, and it is just perfect except for anti-aliasing. I found some videos of Salman Khan, where his sketching is really smooth and anti-aliased. Do you know what program he might use?   I wanted to set in configuration on client HttpWebRequest.Timeout.I was surprised, that MS doesn’t provide it as a part of .Net configuration.(Answer in http://forums.silverlight.net/post/77818.aspx thread: “Unfortunately specifying the timeout is not supported in current version. For years, we referred casually to the Oracle Applications Help or Oracle Applications Help System that ships with the Oracle E-Business Suite products as "iHelp". • Why are marketing employees, product managers, etc. deserving of their own office, yet programmers are jammed in a room as many as possible?

  I don't understand why many (many) companies treat software developers like they are assembly line workers making widgets. Joel Spolsky has a great example of the problems this creates: With programmers, it's especially hard. Productivity depends on being able to juggle a lot of little details in short term memory all at once. Any kind of interruption can cause these details to come crashing down. When you resume work, you can't remember any of the details (like local variable names you were using, or where you were up to in implementing that search algorithm) and you have to keep looking these things up, which slows you down a lot until you get back up to speed. Here's the simple algebra. Let's say (as the evidence seems to suggest) that if we interrupt a programmer, even for a minute, we're really blowing away 15 minutes of productivity. For this example, lets put two programmers, Jeff and Mutt, in open cubicles next to each other in a standard Dilbert veal-fattening farm. Mutt can't remember the name of the Unicode version of the strcpy function. He could look it up, which takes 30 seconds, or he could ask Jeff, which takes 15 seconds. Since he's sitting right next to Jeff, he asks Jeff. Jeff gets distracted and loses 15 minutes of productivity (to save Mutt 15 seconds). Now let's move them into separate offices with walls and doors. Now when Mutt can't remember the name of that function, he could look it up, which still takes 30 seconds, or he could ask Jeff, which now takes 45 seconds and involves standing up (not an easy task given the average physical fitness of programmers!). So he looks it up. So now Mutt loses 30 seconds of productivity, but we save 15 minutes for Jeff. Ahhh! Quote Link More Spolsky on Offices Why don't managers and owner's see this?

• Trying to install apache 2.4.10 with openssl 1.0.1i

  I need to install apache 2.4.10 using openssl 1.0.1i. I would prefer to just use aptitude, but unfortunately the versions I need aren't available yet. If anyone knows how to fix the linker problem (or what I think is a linker problem), or knows of a better way to tell apache to use a newer openssl, it would be greatly appreciated; I've got apache 1.0.1i working otherwise.

• Why do marketing employees get their own office, yet programmers are jammed in a room as many as possible?

  I don't understand why many (many) companies treat software developers like they are assembly line workers making widgets. Joel Spolsky has a great example of the problems this creates: With programmers, it's especially hard. Productivity depends on being able to juggle a lot of little details in short term memory all at once. Any kind of interruption can cause these details to come crashing down. When you resume work, you can't remember any of the details (like local variable names you were using, or where you were up to in implementing that search algorithm) and you have to keep looking these things up, which slows you down a lot until you get back up to speed. Here's the simple algebra. Let's say (as the evidence seems to suggest) that if we interrupt a programmer, even for a minute, we're really blowing away 15 minutes of productivity. For this example, lets put two programmers, Jeff and Mutt, in open cubicles next to each other in a standard Dilbert veal-fattening farm. Mutt can't remember the name of the Unicode version of the strcpy function. He could look it up, which takes 30 seconds, or he could ask Jeff, which takes 15 seconds. Since he's sitting right next to Jeff, he asks Jeff. Jeff gets distracted and loses 15 minutes of productivity (to save Mutt 15 seconds). Now let's move them into separate offices with walls and doors. Now when Mutt can't remember the name of that function, he could look it up, which still takes 30 seconds, or he could ask Jeff, which now takes 45 seconds and involves standing up (not an easy task given the average physical fitness of programmers!). So he looks it up. So now Mutt loses 30 seconds of productivity, but we save 15 minutes for Jeff. Ahhh! Quote Link More Spolsky on Offices Why don't managers and owner's see this?

• Where to download n900 songbird client?

  Hi all, I am confused ... is Songbird releasing a client for the n900? This page has been up for a few months. I've been eagerly awaiting a download, but cannot find the link: http://getsongbird.com/gadgets/ Does anyone have any ideas here? The media player with the n900 works well, but it doesn't connect to last.fm. It isn't a deal breaker, but it would be a nice to have. Songbird seems to run better than Rhythmbox and offers a cleaner, more polished look. Thanks, Walter

  I want OpenOffice in Solaris. So I downloaded OpenOffice from the link below. http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#tested-full My OpenOffice is in .tar.gz format so I unzipped the file using gunzip and then untar'ed the file using tar xvf command. Now I got a directory containing packages subfolder. When I cd to that directory I found too many subdirectories. I could not find a single .pkg file or .jar file or .sh file so that I can install the OpenOffice in Solaris 10. How can I install OpenOffice in Solaris 10 given the scenario above?

• IMAP email migration from Apptix to Office 365

  I am having issues setting up a migration from Apptix to Office 365 of 41 users in my company. I've found a couple guides on the Microsoft website about how to do it (Thank you Google) but I keep coming up with problems. I am trying to set up a mailbox migration through IMAP to get all of my users' emails over to Office 365 before we make the transition over from Apptix. One of the forums suggested using IMAP, since a CSV file can be uploaded to Office 365 and it will check for incoming mail for each user every 24 hours. My problem is that when I do this, I just get errors. • Huawei E170 on Linux?

  Related to this question, I need to know if the specific combination of Ubuntu 9.10 + the Huawei E170 (HSDPA broadband modem USB stick) will work? Bonus points for a link to a webpage that decsribes exactly how it is done! Specifically, I'm in Austria and the telco is A1, but I hope that the setup would be the same regardless of location/provider. I have found these two pages that seem horribly complicated to a Linux noob. Is there a simpler way, or do I really need to dive into that? Your input is much appreciated! If I can get confirmation that it's supported, then I'd switch to Ubuntu Netbook Remix, because I'm already running Ubuntu on the main pc at home and I'd like to keep things simple.
