• Convert db data encoding to UTF-8

  Hi, I use Sql Server 2000 and I inserted some data in hebrew to a table. I need to access this data through an iPhone app using an ASP page that query the table. The problem is that in the iPhone app the Hebrew is shown as strange signs. I think my problem is that the data that is generated from my db isn't in UTF-8 but in USC-2 Any suggestions how to convert the data from my db to utf so it will be readable on the iPhone? 10x.

• Using Spring's KeyHolder with programmatically-generated primary keys

  Hello, I am using Spring's NamedParameterJdbcTemplate to perform an insert into a table. The table uses a NEXTVAL on a sequence to obtain the primary key. I then want this generated ID to be passed back to me. I am using Spring's KeyHolder implementation like this: KeyHolder key = new GeneratedKeyHolder(); jdbcTemplate.update(Constants.INSERT_ORDER_STATEMENT, params, key); However, when I run this statement, I am getting: org.springframework.dao.DataRetrievalFailureException: The generated key is not of a supported numeric type. Unable to cast [oracle.sql.ROWID] to [java.lang.Number] at org.springframework.jdbc.support.GeneratedKeyHolder.getKey(GeneratedKeyHolder.java:73) Any ideas what I am missing?

• Yii - Custom GridView with Multiple Tables

  So, I've extended GridView to include an Advanced Search feature tailored to the needs of my organization. Filter - lets you show/hide columns in the table, and you can also reorder columns by dragging the little drag icon to the left of each item. Sort - Allows for the selection of multiple columns, specify Ascending or Descending. Search - Select your column and insert search parameters. Operators tailored to data type of selected column. Version 1 works, albeit slowly. Basically, I had my hands in the inner workings of CGridView, where I snatch the results from the DataProvider and do the searching and sorting in PHP before rendering the table contents. Now writing Version 2, where I aim to focus on clever CDbCriteria creation, allowing MySQL to do the heavy lifting so it will run quicker. The implementation is trivial when dealing with a single database table. The difficulty arises when I'm dealing with 2 or more tables... For example, if the user intends to search on a field that is a STAT relation, I need that relation to be present in my query. Here's the question. How do I assure that Yii includes all with relations in my query so that I include comparisons? I've included all my relations with my criteria in the model's search function and I've tried CDbCriteria's together ... public function search() { $criteria=new CDbCriteria; $criteria->compare('id', $this->id); $criteria->compare( ... ... $criteria->with = array('relation1','relation2','relation3'); $criteria->together = true; return new CActiveDataProvider( get_class($this), array( 'criteria'=>$criteria, 'pagination' => array('pageSize' => 50) ));} But I still get errors like this... • Bind a users role to dropdown?

  Hi... I'm trying to bind a selected user's role to a dropdown-list. The purpose of this is to be able to change said user's role. I'm attempting this inside a formview hooked up to a linqdatasource which contains a row from the aspnet_User table. The dropdown list is hooked up to a linqdatasource of all the roles in the aspnet_Roles table (with DataValueField="RoleID", DataTextField="RoleName"). I figured it would be possible with something like: SelectedValue='<%# Bind("aspnet_UsersInRole[0].aspnet_Role.RoleID") %>' But this throws a parser exception, about the bind call not being correctly formatted. The roles are there, they show up when I remove the "SelectedValue" Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• How can I set MAXLENGTH on input fields automatically?

  I'm using ASP.NET MVC RC2. I have a set of classes that were auto-generated "Linq-to-SQL Classes", where each class models a table in my database. I have some default "edit" views that use the neat-o Html.TextBoxFor helper extension to render HTML input fields for the columns in a table. However, I notice that there is no MAXLENGTH attribute specified in the generated HTML. A quick google shows that you can add explicit attributes using TextBoxFor etc. but that would mean that I need to hard-code the values (and I need to remember to do it for every input). This seems pretty poor, considering that everything was automatically generated directly from the DB, so the size of the columns is known. (Although, to be fair, the web-side stuff has to work with any model objects, not just with Linq-to-SQL objects). Is there any nice way of getting this to do the right thing?

• Deadlock error in INSERT statement

  We've got a web-based application. There is a time-bound database operation (INSERTs and UPDATEs) in the application which takes more time to complete, hence this particular flow has been changed into Java Thread so it will not wait (block) for the complete database operation to be completed. My problem is, if more than 1 user come across this particular flow, I'm facing the following error thrown by PostgreSQL: org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: ERROR: deadlock detected Detail: Process 13560 waits for ShareLock on transaction 3147316424; blocked by process 13566. Process 13566 waits for ShareLock on transaction 3147316408; blocked by process 13560. Above error is consistently thrown in INSERT statements. Additional Information: 1) I have PRIMARY KEY defined in this table. 2) There are FOREIGN KEY references in this table. 3) Separate database connection is passed to each Java Thread. Technologies Web Server: Tomcat v6.0.10 Java v1.6.0 Servlet Database: PostgreSQL v8.2.3 Connection Management: pgpool II

  Hello all, Can anyone explain why this query returns an empty result. SELECT * FROM (`bookmarks`) JOIN `tags` ON `tags`.`bookmark_id` = `bookmarks`.`id` WHERE `tag` = 'clean' AND `tag` = 'simple' In my bookmarks table, I have a bookmark with an id of 70 and in my tags table i have two tags 'clean' and 'simple' both that have the column bookmark_id as 70. I would of thought a result would have been returned? How can I remedy this so that I have the bookmark returned when it has a tag of 'clean' and 'simple'? Thanks all for any explanation and solution to this.

  I am in database design development phase. Application will work with large number of users (LARGE :)) I designed 80% of database but I have one Users table which is connected to everything else: Users {UserId, FirstName, LastName, Username, Password, PasswordQuestion, PasswordAnswer, Gender, RoleId, LastLoginDate etc etc} I saw asp.net membership database structure where Users and Membership are two tables. My questions are: Should I use one users table with all users data in it or more tables? If answer is 'more tables', what tables to use? Any advice on how to structure relation between those tables? This is sample relation that I have, and trying to improve. I don't understand why user and userChild are separated tables?

• Using MS Moles with datacontext and stored procedures without using a Connection string.

  I have just begun to work with MS Moles for testing and I have followed the idea/pattern in which jcollum(thanks) uses a Mole for a table in this stackoverflow question here. But I am having a problem as I do not want to have to pass a connection string when I use the datasource as such: using (TheDataContext dataContext = new TheDataContext(myConnectionString)) { dataContext.ExecuteStoredprocedure(value, ref ValueExists); } I really like the fact that I just need to mole the table and everything else is done for me. I realize I could just mole the ExecuteStoredProcedure method, but I am wondering if I could just somehow avoid the sql exception I am getting here when I do not pass in the connection string. Or, if I there is a better way to do this? Therefore, does anyone have a solution so that I can avoid placing in the connection string? Thanks in advance.

• ManyToMany Relation does not create the primary key

  Hello, I have a ManyToMany relationship between two classes: ClassA and ClassB, but when the table for this relationship (table called objectA_objectB) there is no primary key on it. In my ClassA I have the following: @ManyToMany(fetch=FetchType.LAZY) @OrderBy(value="name") @JoinTable(name="objectA_objectB", joinColumns= @JoinColumn(name="idObjectA", referencedColumnName="id"), inverseJoinColumns= @JoinColumn(name="idObjectB", referencedColumnName="id") ) private List<ClassB> objectsB; and in my ClassB I have the reversed relation @ManyToMany List<ClassA> objectsA; I just want to make a primary key of both id's but I need to change the name of the columns as I do. Why is the PK missing? How can I define it? I use JPA 2.0 Hibernate implementation, if this helps. Thanks.

Single left outer join works with what I have done above. How do I include PlatformIdentities (the 3rd table) ? • Pros and cons of programmatically enforcing foreign key than in database

  It is causing so much trouble in terms of development just by letting database enforcing foreign key. Especially during unit test I can’t drop table due to foreign key constrains, I need to create table in such an order that foreign key constrain warning won’t get triggered. In reality I don’t see too much point of letting database enforcing the foreign key constrains. If the application has been properly designed there should not be any manual database manipulation other than select queries. I just want to make sure that I am not digging myself into a hole by not having foreign key constrains in database and leaving it solely to the application’s responsibility. Am I missing anything? P.S. my real unit tests (not those that use mocking) will drop existing tables if the structure of underlying domain object has been modified.

• Linq to SQL Repository ~theory~ - Generic but now uses Linq to Objects?

  The project I am currently working on used Linq to SQL as an ORM data access technology. Its an MVC3 Web app. The problem I faced was primarily due to the inability to mock (for testing) the DataContext which gets autogenerated by the DBML designer. So to solve this issue (after much reading) I refactored the repository system which was in place - single repository with seperate and duplicated access methods for each table which ended up with something like 300 methods only 10 of which were unique - into a single repository with generic methods taking the table and returning more generic types to the upper reaches of the application. My question revolves more around the design I've used to get thus far and the differences I'm noticing in the structure of the app. 1) Having refactored the code from the dark ages which used classic Linq to SQL queries: public Billing GetBilling(int id) { var result = ( from bil in _bicDc.Billings where bil.BillingId == id select bil).SingleOrDefault(); return (result); } it now looks like: public T GetRecordWhere<T>(Expression<Func<T, bool>> predicate) where T : class { T result; try { result = _dataContext.GetTable<T>().Where(predicate).SingleOrDefault(); } catch (Exception ex) { throw ex; } return result; } and is used by the controller with a query along the lines of: _repository.GetRecordWhere<Billing>(x => x.BillingId == 1); which is fine, and precisely what I wanted to achieve. ...however.... I'm also having to do the following to get precisely the result set i require in the controller class (the highest point of the app in essence)... viewModel.RecentRequests = _model.GetAllRecordsWhere<Billing>(x => x.BillingId == 1) .Where(x => x.BillingId == Convert.ToInt32(BillingType.Submitted)) .OrderByDescending(x => x.DateCreated). Take(5).ToList(); This - as far as my understanding is correct - is now using Linq to Objects rather than the Linq to SQL queries I was previously? Is this okay practise? It feels wrong to me but I dont know why. Probably because the logic of the queries is in the very highest tier of the app, rather than the lowest, but... I defer to you good people for advice. One of the issues I considered was bringing the entire table into memory but I understand that using the Iqeryable return type the where clause is taken to the database and evaluated there. Thus returning only the resultset i require... i may be wrong. And if you've made it this far, well done. Thank you, and if you have any advice it is very much appreciated!!

I added a dataset object to my project and added a table to the dataset. Everything works fine in the IDE, however, I get an error in the generated designer code on the table adapter constructor. • ASP.NET MVC2 - using LINQ-generated class

  There are few things not clear to me about ASP.NET MV2. In database I have table Contacts with several fields, and there is an additional field XmlFields of which type is xml. In that field are stored additional description fields. There are 4 classes: Contact class which corresponds to Contact table and is defined by default when creating LINQ classes ContactListView class which inherits Contact class and has some additional properties ContactXmlView class that contains fields from XmlFields field ContactDetailsView class which merges ContactListView and ContactXmlView into one class and this one is used to display data in view pages ContactListView class has re-defined some properties from Contact class (so that I can add [Required] filter used for validation) - but I get warning message: 'ObjectTest.Models.Contacts.ContactListView.FirstName' hides inherited member 'SA.Model.Contact.FirstName'. Use the new keyword if hiding was intended. ContactDetailsView class is also used in a form when creating new contact and adding it to database. I am not sure if this is correct way, and the warning message confuses me a bit. Any advise about this? Thanks, Ile

• How to make a DropDownList control display some items in bold ASP.Net

  I'm working with a custom DropDownList control in ASP.Net and there's been a request to display certain items in the list with a bold typeface (NOTE - the control inherits from CompositeDataBoundControl so it can be data bound... not DropDownListBox). The control is bound to a table and there's a column in the table named IsUsed - if this is set to true, the corresponding item in the list should be rendered bold. (It should be noted here that this will only ever be viewed in FireFox.) My experience is all in the middle \ backend tiers so the presentation layer is very new to me - can someone point me in the right direction? My initial thought was that somewhere in the custom control I would have access to all the rows that are returned from the data source which I could cycle through etc but I'm not sure if that's possible... There's also RenderContents which I can override... looks interesting! Any help appreciated - cheers. James

• Putting update logic in your migrations

  A couple of times I've been in the situation where I've wanted to refactor the design of some model and have ended up putting update logic in migrations. However, as far as I've understood, this is not good practice (especially since you are encouraged to use your schema file for deployment, and not your migrations). How do you deal with these kind of problems? To clearify what I mean, say I have a User model. Since I thought there would only be two kinds of users, namely a "normal" user and an administrator, I chose to use a simple boolean field telling whether the user was an adminstrator or not. However, after I while I figured I needed some third kind of user, perhaps a moderator or something similar. In this case I add a UserType model (and the corresponding migration), and a second migration for removing the "admin" flag from the user table. And here comes the problem. In the "add_user_type_to_users" migration I have to map the admin flag value to a user type. Additionally, in order to do this, the user types have to exist, meaning I can not use the seeds file, but rather create the user types in the migration (also considered bad practice). A such quantity of tables makes it difficult to use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. For example, I must scroll up in object explorer to access database related functions, or scroll down each time I need to access Views or Security features. Is it possible to group several tables to be able to expand or collapse them in Object Explorer? Maybe a folder may be displayed for each schema, letting collapse the folders I don't need to use?

Here i have enabled the export option, so it is showing me the exporting options like CSV, EXCEL, XML. But whenver i am clicking on that CSV link, my web browser hanged, means nothing is displayed on it For that exporting solution i have also added filter in my web.xml.
