  I'm interested in dabbling in Nintendo DS, 3DS, or GBA development. I would like to know what my (legal) options for development tools and IDEs are. In particular, I would not consider moving in this direction unless I can find: A programming language that has managed memory (garbage collection) A unit testing tool akin to JUnit, NUnit, etc. for unit tests I would also prefer if other tools exist, like code-coverage, etc. for that platform. But the main thing is managed memory and unit testing. What options are out there?

  We're happy to announce the availability of Oracle Linux 6.3, the third update release for Oracle Linux 6. ISO images can now be obtained from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud, the individual RPM packages have already been published from our public yum repository. This distribution now includes the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 2 (2.6.39-200), Oracle's recommended kernel version for Oracle Linux. • MiniMax function throws null pointer exception

  I'm working on a school project, I have to build a tic tac toe game with the AI based on the MiniMax algorithm. The two player mode works like it should. I followed the code example on http://ethangunderson.com/blog/minimax-algorithm-in-c/. The only thing is that I get a NullPointer Exception when I run the code. And I can't wrap my finger around it. I placed a comment in the code where the exception is thrown. The recursive call is returning a null pointer, what is very strange because it can't.. When I place a breakpoint on the null return with the help of a if statement, then I see that there ARE still 2 to 3 empty places.. I probably overlooking something. Hope someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. • Should I demand unit-testing from programmers?

  I work at a place, where we buy a lot of IT-projects. We are currently producing a standard for systems-requirements for the requisition of future projects. In that process, We are discussing whether or not we can demand automated unit testing from our suppliers. I firmly believe, that proper automated unit-testing is the only way to document the quality and stability of the code. Everyone else seems to think that unit-testing is an optional method that concerns the supplier alone. Thus, we will make no demands of automated unit-testing, continous testing, coverage-reports, inspections of unit-tests or any of the kind. I find this policy extremely frustrating. Am I totally out of line here? Please provide me with arguments for any of the oppinions.

• Use CSS Selectors with HtmlUnit

  HtmlUnit is a great library for performing web integration tests in Java.  But sometimes node traversal can be somewhat cumbersome. Fear not fellow automated tester (good for you!).  I found a great little project on Github that will allow you to query your document for elements via css selectors similar to jQuery. The project is located at https://github.com/chrsan/css-selectors.  You can use Maven to build it, or download 1.0.2 here.  Beware.  I will not be updating this link so I suggest you download the latest code. • Are there any formalized/mathematical theories of software testing?

  Googling "software testing theory" only seems to give theories in the soft sense of the word; I have not been able to find anything that would classify as a theory in the mathematical, information theoretical or some other scientific field's sense. What I'm looking for is something that formalizes what testing is, the notions used, what a test case is, the feasibility of testing something, the practicality of testing something, the extent to which something should be tested, formal definition/explanation of code coverage, etc. UPDATE: Also, I'm not sure, intuitively, about the connection between formal verification and what I asked, but there's clearly some sort of connection.

• New TPerlRegEx Compatible with Delphi XE

  The new RegularExpressionsCore unit in Delphi XE is based on the PerlRegEx unit that I wrote many years ago. Since I donated full rights to a copy rather than full rights to the original, I can continue to make my version of TPerlRegEx available to people using older versions of Delphi. I did make a few changes to the code to modernize it a bit prior to donating a copy to Embarcadero. The latest TPerlRegEx includes those changes. This allows you to use the same regex-based code using the RegularExpressionsCore unit in Delphi XE, and the PerlRegEx unit in Delphi 2010 and earlier. If you’re writing new code using regular expressions in Delphi 2010 or earlier, I strongly recomment you use the new version of my PerlRegEx unit. If you later migrate your code to Delphi XE, all you have to do is replace PerlRegEx with RegularExrpessionsCore in the uses clause of your units. If you have code written using an older version of TPerlRegEx that you want to migrate to the latest TPerlRegEx, you’ll need to take a few changes into account. The original TPerlRegEx was developed when Borland’s goal was to have a component for everything on the component palette. So the old TPerlRegEx derives from TComponent, allowing you to put it on the component palette and drop it on a form. The new TPerlRegEx derives from TObject. It can only be instantiated at runtime. If you want to migrate from an older version of TPerlRegEx to the latest TPerlRegEx, start with removing any TPerlRegEx components you may have placed on forms or data modules and instantiate the objects at runtime instead. When instantiating at runtime, you no longer need to pass an owner component to the Create() constructor. Simply remove the parameter. Some of the property and method names in the original TPerlRegEx were a bit unwieldy. These have been renamed in the latest TPerlRegEx. Essentially, in all identifiers SubExpression was replaced with Group and MatchedExpression was replaced with Matched. • Release build vs nightly build

  Hi! A typical solution is to have a CI (Continuous Integration) build running on a build server: It will analyze the source code, make build (in debug) and run tests, measure test coverage, etc. Now, another build type usually known is "Nightly build": do slow stuff like create code documents, make a setup package, deploy to test environment, and run automatic (smoke or acceptance) tests against the test environment, etc. Now, the question: Is it better to have a third separate "Release build" as release build? Or do "Nightly build" in release mode and use it as a release? What are you using in your company? (The release build should also add some kind of tag to source control of potential product version.)

• My Client wants to convert me from a Contractor to an Employee. I'd like part of the Headhunter's fee. Is this fair?

  I am happily working on a contract for a good, solid company. This client is very happy with my work and has asked me to consider converting to full-time employment. My problem is the headhunter. This firm has not been entirely upfront with me throughout this contract. A mistake was made by the firm that benched me for several days, costing me those days' pay. Inadequate healthcare coverage left me with a bill of several thousand dollars after my wife's brief hospital stay. My feeling is that I did the work that earned me the invitation to work full-time for this company. Asking for 1/3 of the commission I figure they're going to receive would nicely counterbalance the inequities that I perceive were dealt to me. Is this an (un)reasonable or (in)appropriate request?

It could be my battery since it's nearly dead, as in loadable to 11 % of the initial capacity, but I have no evidence for that. What is this / how can I find out where this comes from? How can I get rid of it? Is there a 'dud' keycode? When I assign a keycode with sudo setkeycode e00d $(random keycode) the key does actually get pressed. That makes it impossible to enter sudo password for example. So any 'real' keycode is not an option. It hasn't been like that half a year ago. Even better than the dud keycode would be a real fix. It happens from 10.04 to 12.04 (before that I don't know). I did read zcat /usr/share/doc/udev/README.keymap.txt.gz |less as suggested in the Ubuntu Wiki. /lib/udev/findkeyboards && sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event5 produces what appears to be newlines in rapid succession. sudo udevadm monitor doesn't show the event.
