    The Switcher in Windows 8 is really convenient for managing running applications, but unfortunately all desktop apps are grouped into one position in the switcher... I like to kill background apps with the middle mouse button, but it's not possible to do with the regular "alt-tab" switcher... Is there any way to have the best of these two worlds - that is the ability to easily kill apps with the middle mouse button but without desktop apps being grouped into one item?

  • How can I access my external hard drive wirelessly from my laptop?

    My desktop crashed so I am migrated over to a laptop. I have wireless in my home so i am trying to be able to use to laptop in any room without any other connections (wireless printer, wireless mouse, etc) The one issue i have is that my desktop had 2 external hard drives (USB) connected to them and i am trying to figure out the best way to treat these as external drives without having to plug them into the laptop directly. My external hard drive is the Western Digital WDH1U5000N 500GB and my laptop is a Dell D620.

  • Can I combine two LANs into one to get double speed?

    Hey guys, I have 2 LANs in my own PC & 2 Routers (TP-Link WR941N each) with 2 internet accounts (512Kbps each) connected to the same ISP signal & company using NanoStation 5 from ubnt. As you know the connections work separately by default! (I use Windows 7 64bit) Can I merge them to get double speed (download/upload simultaneously) using regedit or special software or any other method?   • OpenTK C# Loading Model (3DS?) for display and animation

    For the last few days i have been searching for a model importer that support skeletal movement using OpenTK (C#, OpenGL). I am avoiding writing it myself because firstly i am only just learning OpenGL, but also because i don't see why there's a necessity in recreating the wheel. What do you guys use to import your models? I find it interesting that 90% of OpenTK users will import models for various projects, yet i havn't found a single working importer. Could any of you share your code or point me in the direction of a good loader? 3DS files would be best, but anything that can be exported from an autodesk program would be fine, as long as it uses skeleton animation. Thanks for any help :)

  • How to know whether to create a general system or to hack a solution

    I'm new to coding , learning it since last year actually. One of my worst habits is the following: Often I'm trying to create a solution that is too big , too complex and doesn't achieve what needs to be achieved, when a hacky kludge can make the fit. One last example was the following (see paste bin link below) http://pastebin.com/WzR3zsLn After explaining my issue, one nice person at stackoverflow came with this solution instead http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25304170/update-a-field-by-removing-quarter-or-removing-month When should I keep my code simple and when should I create a 'big', general solution?   • Developer Dashboard in SharePoint 2010

    Introducing the Developer Dashboard As a SharePoint developer (or IT Professional), how many times have you had the pleasure of figuring out why a particular page on your site is taking too long to render? I'm sure one of the techniques you have employed in troubleshooting is the process of elimination - removing individual web parts from the page hoping to identify which web part is misbehaving. One of the new features of SharePoint 2010 is the Developer Dashboard. This dashboard provides tracing and performance information that can be useful when you are trying to troubleshoot pages that are loading too slow. The Developer Dashboard is turned off by default and I'll go over 3 different ways to display it. Here is a screenshot of what the Developer Dashboard looks like when displayed at the bottom of the page:   You can see on the left side the different events that fired during the page processing pipeline and how long these events took. This is where you will see individual web parts being processed and how long it took to complete (obviously the kind of processing depends on what the web part does). On the right side you would see the different database calls issued through the SharePoint Object Model to process the page. You will notice that each of these database queries are actually a hyperlink and clicking on it displays a pop-up window that shows the actual SQL Query Text, the Call Stack that triggered the database call, and the IO statistics of that query. Enabling the Developer Dashboard Option 1: Managed Code   The Developer Dashboard is a farm-wide setting and the code above won't work if it is used within a web part hosted on any non-Central Admin site. The SPDeveloperDashboardLevel enum has three possible values: On, Off, and OnDemand. Setting it to On will always display the Developer Dashboard at the bottom of the page. Setting it Off will hide the Developer Dashboard. Setting it to OnDemand will add an icon at the top right corner of the page (see screenshot below) where a Site Collection Admin can toggle the display of the Developer Dashboard for a particular site collection. In my opinion, OnDemand is the best setting when troubleshooting a page or during development since a Site Collection Admin can turn it on or off and for a particular site only. The first cool thing about this is that the Site Collection Admin that turned it on will be the only one to see the Developer Dashboard output. Everyday users won't see the Developer Dashboard output even if it was turned on by a Site Collection Admin. If you need more flexibility on who gets to see the Developer Dashboard output, you can set the SPDeveloperDashboardSettings.RequiredPermissions to control which group of users will have the permission to see the output. Option 2: Using stsadm Using stsadm, you can run the following command to configure the Developer Dashboard: STSADM –o setproperty –pn developer-dashboard –pv OnDemand To successfully execute this command, be sure you that are running as a Farm Admin. Option 3: Using PowerShell For all scripts in SharePoint 2010, I prefer writing them as PowerShell scripts. Though the stsadm command is less verbose, the PowerShell equivalent is pretty straightforward and uses the SharePoint Object Model: You can of course parameterized the value that gets assigned to the DisplayLevel property so you can turn it On, Off or OnDemand depending on the parameter. Events and the Developer Dashboard  Now, don't assume that all the code inside your web part or page will show up in the Developer Dashboard complete with all the great troubleshooting information. Only a finite set of events are monitored by default (for a web part it will events in the base web part class). Let's say you have a click event that could take some time, for example a web service call. And you want to include troubleshooting information for this event in the Developer Dashboard. Enter SPMonitoredScope which is also a new feature in SharePoint 2010. In SharePoint 2010, everything is executed within a "Monitored Scope". And each scope has a set of "Monitors" that measures and counts calls and timings which appears in the Developer Dashboard. Below is an example on how to get your custom code to get included in the Developer Dashboard by wrapping it inside a new monitored scope: The code above would include your new scope "My long web service call" into the Developer Dashboard and would log the time it took to complete processing. In my opinion, wrapping your custom code in a SPMonitoredScope is a SharePoint development best practice since it provides you visibility and a better understanding on the performance of your components.

Boot via USB with an Old BIOS Dear How-To Geek, I’m trying to repurpose some old computers by updating them with lightweight Linux distros but the BIOS on most of the machines is ancient and creaky. How ancient? It doesn’t even support booting from a USB device! I have a large flash drive that I’ve turned into a master installation tool for jobs like this but I can’t use it. The computers in question have USB ports; they just aren’t recognized during the boot process. What can I do? USB Bootin’ in Boise Dear USB Bootin’, It’s great you’re working to breathe life into old hardware! You’ve run into one of the limitations of older BIOSes, USB was around but nobody was thinking about booting off of it. Fortunately if you have a computer old enough to have that kind of BIOS it’s likely to also has a floppy drive or a CDROM drive. While you could make a bootable CDROM for your application we understand that you want to keep using the master USB installer you’ve made. In light of that we recommend PLoP Boot Manager. Think of it like a boot manager for your boot manager. Using it you can create a bootable floppy or CDROM that will enable USB booting of your master USB drive. Make a CD and a floppy version and you’ll have everything in your toolkit you need for future computer refurbishing projects. Read up on creating bootable media with PLoP Boot Manager here. Snapping Windows to Preset Coordinates Dear How-To Geek, Once upon a time I had a company laptop that came with a little utility that snapped windows to preset areas of the screen. This was long before the snap-to-side features in Windows 7. You could essentially configure your screen into a grid pattern of your choosing and then windows would neatly snap into those grids. I have no idea what it was called or if was anymore than a gimmick from the computer manufacturer, but I’d really like to have it on my new computer! Fortunately for you the application was extremely popular and Acer released it independently of their hardware.     Possible Duplicate: Best approach to learning web programming I have resisted doing web programming for a while, but I have come to the realization that I need to learn it and may have resisted do to fear of the unknown. I am a regular applications and systems programmer with no real idea of how to even get started. I have tried to start a few times, rails, django, tornado, web.py, cherrypy, but always get discouraged and quit. The most web programming I have done was in HTML during 1995 for my geocities site. I have pretty decent experience with regular programming in C, Python, Assembly and Java. Just looking for a way to get started and get a good overview of the different technologies and frameworks. I am not doing this for a job or employment, just to learn.

  • Game Networking Help Jmonkey SpiderMonkey

    I have decided I think Jmonkey Engine will be best for my project, (an online RTS), but I have one question. If my game were to be successful (Yes I understand how slim the chances are, and how difficult this can be) I don't quite understand an aspect of networking. Do games like this require multiple servers, or only a single server? If multiple servers, I was unable to find anything regarding if Jmonkey's SpirderMonkey Networking supports this. (Something to allow equal distribution of traffic to multiple servers). UPDATE: I plan on using Jmonkey for my project. My Project is an online RTS, but with somewhat of an FPS twist. I am currently trying to figure out if the game has heavy traffic if having multiple servers to host the game is recommended. In addition to this, if using multiple hosting servers is supported in Jmonkey as I can't seem to find any documentation regarding it.

I hope to have more tips, best practices - but here is a quick thing that people seem to trip up on..."How to Run OWSM related WLST commands" The most common issue people seem to run into is trying to run the OWSM WLST commands from the wrong location. You need to run the WLST commands from "oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh" (ex: /home/Oracle/Middleware/oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh) This is documented in the OWSM doc (Security And Administrator's Guide) under the section "Accessing the Web Services Custom WLST Commands". Note: This location is different from the location from where you run the SOA WLST commands. If you try to run the OWSM WLST command from the wrong location - you will see errors like the following: "The MBean ,@ oracle.wsm:*,name=WSMDocumentManager,type=Repository was not found"

  • Export a .FBX file in Unity3D at runtime

    What I'm looking to do is be able to export an object as a .FBX at runtime in Unity3D. I've made a C# script which can export a mesh filter or skinned mesh renderer to a .OBJ file at runtime, but .OBJ doesn't support the same kind of animations and skins that .FBX does. I've been researching this for a while, as of right now it looks like somehow using the Autodesk FBX SDK or some other external .dll would be my best option. Does anyone know of external .dlls I could use for this? Or how to make calls to Autodesk's FBX SDK at runtime? Another option could possibly be to write the mesh information as a text file then convert to .FBX on exporting. Just looking for fellow programmer's thoughts, or tips, or to see if this has been accomplished already. As far as I can tell there isn't any pre-existing scripts to export FBX at runtime in Unity.
