• Making an Ajax request to a page method in ASP.NET MVC 2

  I'm trying to call a page method belonging to a MVC Controller from another site, by means of: $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: "http://localhost:54953/Home/ola", data: "", contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function(data) { console.log(data.Name); } }); the method code is as follows, really simple, just to test: public ActionResult ola() { return Json(new ActionInfo() { Name = "ola" },JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); } I've seen this aproach being suggested here, and I actually like it a lot, should it work... When I run this, firebug gets a 200 OK, but the data received is null. I've tried a lot of different approaches, like having the data in text (wish grants me "(an empty string)" instead of just "null") or returning string in the server method... • Calling a method from within a django model save() override

  I'm overriding a django model save() method. Within the override I'm calling another method of the same class and instance which calculates one of the instance's fields based on other fields of the same instance. class MyClass(models.Model): field1 = models.FloatField() field2 = models.FloatField() field3 = models.FloatField() def calculateField1(self) self.field1 = self.field2 + self.field3 def save(self, *args, **kwargs): self.calculateField1() super(MyClass, self).save(*args, **kwargs) The override method is called when I change the model in admin. Alas I've discovered that within calculateField1() field2 and field3 have the values of the instance from before I edited them in admin. If I enter the instance again in admin and save again, only then field1 receives the correct value as field2 and field3 are already updated. Is this the correct behavior on django's side? If yes, then how can I use the new values within calculateField1? I cannot implement the calculation within the save() as calculateField1() actually quite long and I need it to be called from elsewhere.

• The method split(String) is undefined for the type String

  I am using Pulse - the Plugin Manager for Eclipse and installed. I have the Eclipse 3.5 for mobile development(Pulsar) profile with a couple other profiles. I realized that the split() method called on a string from code such as below: String data = "one, two, three, four"; data.split(","); generates the error: "The method split(String) is undefined for the type String". I am aware that the split() method did not exist before Java's JRE 1.4 and perhaps could be the cause of the problem. The problem is I don't think I have jre/sdk versions installed. Perhaps there's one in-built with the Pulsar profile and needs editing - but I couldn't tell what settings (and where) needs tweaking. I have checked WindowsPreferencesJavaInstalled JREs and it's set to = jre1.4. Please help thanks.

• Which method of creating javascript objects is better?

  I've seen objects defined in two different ways, which function similarly, but are, of course, fundamentally different. You can do it either like this: var myobject = {property: 'hello', act: function() { this.property += ' world'; }}; and like this: function myobject() { this.property = 'hello'; this.act = function() { this.property += 'world'; } } The second method could create objects like so var newobj = new myobject(); but you could do something similar using the first notation by making the object the return value of a function. The new keyword has the advantage of being able to pass parameters that can be used to initialize the properties of the object, but you could just as easily add an init function to the first kind of object. Just wondering if besides these two differences, if there was a fundamental difference that made one method definitely better than the other method.

  Hi, i'm loading, using the JQuery ajax() method, an external page with both html and javascript code: <script type="text/javascript" src="myfile.js"></script> <p>This is some HTML</p> <script type="text/javascript"> alert("This is inline JS"); </script> and setting the results into a div element, using the html() method. While the html() method properly evaluates the inline JS code, it doesn't download and evaluate the external JS file "myfile.js". Any tip for this issue?

  Is there some method in ICollection in C# that would add all elements of another collection? Right now I have to always write foreach cycle for this: ICollection<Letter> allLetters = ... //some initalization ICollection<Letter> justWrittenLetters = ... //some initalization ... //some code, adding to elements to those ICollections foreach(Letter newLetter in justWrittenLetters){ allLetters.add(newLetter); } My question is, is there method that can replace that cycle? Like for example the method addAll(Collection c) in Java ? So I would write only something like: allLetters.addAll(justWrittenLetters);

• Why is it preferable to call a static method statically from within an instance of the method's clas

  If I create an instance of a class in Java, why is it preferable to call a static method of that same class statically, rather than using this.method()? I get a warning from Eclipse when I try to call static method staticMethod() from within the custom class's constructor via this.staticMethod(). public MyClass() { this.staticMethod(); } vs public MyClass() { MyClass.staticMethod(); } Can anyone explain why this is a bad thing to do? It seems to me like the compiler should already have allocated an instance of the object, so statically allocating memory would be unneeded overhead.

  I have create a class from a string, check it is valid and then check if it responds to a particular method. If it does then I call the method. It all works fine, except I get an annoying compiler warning: "warning: no '-setCurrentID:' method found". Am I doing something wrong here? Is there anyway to tell the compiler all is ok and stop it reporting a warning?   I have a tricky problem. I am in a situation where I need to use a method defined in a .cs file from a javascript function. The problem is we are using .NET 1.1 and AJAX cannot be used for the application. Also, I will need to pass a string from the javascript to the server side method. The page where I am implementing the javascript is a .as Any ideas? I have tried doing a post back and creating a RaisePostBack event handler method (both in the .aspx page and the .ascx user control) but no luck. It will be greatly appreciated if someone could help me out with the problem.

• Proper NSArray initialization for ivar data in a method

  I'm new to Objective-C and iPhone development and have been using Apress' Beginning iPhone 3 Programming book as my main guide for a few weeks now. In a few cases as part of a viewDidLoad: method, ivars like a breadTypes NSArray are initialized like below, with an intermediate array defined and then ultimately set to the actual array like this: NSArray *breadArray = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"White", @"Whole Weat", @"Rye", @"Sourdough", @"Seven Grain", nil]; self.breadTypes = breadArray; [breadArray release]; Why is it done this way, instead of simply like this: self.breadTypes = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"White", @"Whole Weat", @"Rye", @"Sourdough", @"Seven Grain", nil]; Both seem to work when I compile and run it. Is the 2nd method above not doing proper memory management? I assume initWithObjects: returns an array with a retain count of 1 and I eventually release breadTypes again in the dealloc: method, so that wraps things up nicely. I'm guessing 'self.breadTypes = ...' copies the data to the new array, which is why the original array can be safely released, correct?

A first naive approach was to add a parameter to the decorator which holds the object, like @saveconfig(self), but this doesn't work. How can I access object variables of the method host inside the decorator? Do i have to define the decorator inside the same class to get access?

  Hi, I'm binding a GridView to a domain model object, this domain model object has a method for working out a formatted value to display on the grid. I'd like to use this method for my display value, which is fine, but I'd also like to be able to sort on the value returned by that method. My sort expression can only take in a property/field at the moment. Help please! What do I need to do to get this to work? I'm using an SPGridView actually, but that doesn't make a lot of difference to my problem. Thanks.

On my webpage I've a sidebar containing a list of markers with onclick event executing showDetails method, that looks like: GMarker.prototype.showDetails=function() { map.panTo(this.getLatLng()); this.openInfoWindowHtml(this.details); }; The problem is that i cannot both panTo and openInfoWindowHtml in one method, it pans but won't open tooltip and when i change method to: GMarker.prototype.showDetails=function() { this.openInfoWindowHtml(this.details); map.panTo(this.getLatLng()); }; it opens tooltip but won't center map to the marker's anchor coordinates. Even using wait function doesn't solve my problem. What am I doing wrong?

• How can I break from a method prematurely that's being called by NSTimer

  Basically I'm writing a metronome app, but I'm using a sound file that, depending on the BPM, might not be finished playing when the "play" method is called again. For example, if the sound file is 0.5 seconds long, but the BPM is 200, the "play" method needs to be called every 0.3 seconds. I'm not overly familiar with NSTimer, but it appears that if it is supposed to fire before the previous invocation has completed, it doesn't, and just waits for the next time around. I could be completely wrong about that though. What I need to do is have the previous invocation end prematurely, and have the "play" method called again when the time is supposed to fire. Any help would be appreciated!

  Hi, The following method does not apply the wpf changes (background = red) until the 2nd method (DoWork) exits: private void change() { Background = Brushes.Red; Dispatcher.BeginInvoke((Action) DoWork); } DoWork() takes several seconds to run and I don't really want to put it into a thread, as this code will be used in several places and will probably interact will the Dispatcher thread at various intervals. I've tried calling the Invalidate...() methods, but to no avail. The BeginInvoke() was added to see if the delay would allow the background change to be applied before the logic was called. Typically, the logic would be part of this method. Btw, most of the logic is performed on a different thread and shouldn't block the Dispatcher thread?! Can someone please help? Thanks

  Hi All I am learning Java through BlueJ I would like to add a removeLot method to the Auction Class in BlueJ Chpt 4. This involves also returning the lot with the given number or null if there is no such lot. If you enter , say 5 lots and then use the remove method, this codes removes whichever lot you specify. However if you enter a new lot after using the removeLot method - an internal error message comes up regarding lotnumbering . Any ideas?   The code below has an overridden method with a looser exception specification as compared to the method being overridden. //AnotherMain.java public class AnotherMain { public void dummyMethod( String args[] ) throws IOException{ throw new IOException(); } } //SubAnotherMain.java public class SubAnotherMain extends AnotherMain{ @Override public void dummyMethod( String[] args ) throws Exception { // To get this to compile, change the above - throws IOException, Exception super.dummyMethod(args); throw new Exception("This will not compile unless the exception specification has IOException too"); } } Afaik, the overriding method should not compile at all as the looser specification might break substitutability. Why does it compile after the original exception specification is included in the override? What have I misunderstood?
