• Can you reference an entire column in OpenOffice Calc (like A:A in Excel)?

  I'd like to refer to an entire column, like you can in Excel by using A:A. I found a discussion on the openoffice.org forums which is a few years old, and suggests there is/was no neat way to do it. The options presented are Use A1:A65536. Use OFFSET($A$1;0;0;65536;1) as the previous range may get altered if you insert or remove rows. Use Data - Define Range... to name the column range (but which for me still just equates to $A$1:$A$1048576). These approaches seem over-complicated and still don't achieve my goal perfectly. Does anyone know of a way? Thanks, Andy

• Boost::Asio : io_service.run() vs poll() or how do I integrate boost::asio in mainloop

  Hi, I am currently trying to use boost::asio for some simple tcp networking for the first time, and I allready came across something I am not really sure how to deal with. As far as I understand io_service.run() method is basically a loop which runs until there is nothing more left to do, which means it will run until I release my little server object. Since I allready got some sort of mainloop set up, I would rather like tp update the networking loop manually from there just for the sake of simplicity, and I think io_service.poll() would do what I want, sort of like this: void myApplication::update() { myIoService.poll(); //do other stuff } This seems to work, but I am still wondering if there is a drawback from this method since that does not seem to be the common way to deal with boost::asios io services. Is this a valid approach or should I rather use io_service.run() in a non blocking extra thread?

• RSpec mocking a nested model in Rails - ActionController problem

  Hi All I am having a problem in RSpec when my mock object is asked for a URL by the ActionController. The URL is a Mock one and not a correct resource URL. I am running RSpec 1.3.0 and Rails 2.3.5 Basically I have two models. Where a subject has many notes. class Subject < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :title has_many :notes end class Note < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :title belongs_to :subject end My routes.rb file nests these two resources as such: ActionController::Routing::Routes.draw do |map| map.resources :subjects, :has_many => :notes end The NotesController.rb file looks like this: class NotesController < ApplicationController # POST /notes # POST /notes.xml def create @subject = Subject.find(params[:subject_id]) @note = @subject.notes.create!(params[:note]) respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to(@subject) } end end end Finally this is my RSpec spec which should simply post my mocked objects to the NotesController and be executed... which it does: it "should create note and redirect to subject without javascript" do # usual rails controller test setup here subject = mock(Subject) Subject.stub(:find).and_return(subject) notes_proxy = mock('association proxy', { "create!" => Note.new }) subject.stub(:notes).and_return(notes_proxy) post :create, :subject_id => subject, :note => { :title => 'note title', :body => 'note body' } end The problem is that when the RSpec post method is called. The NotesController correctly handles the Mock Subject object, and create! the new Note object. However when the NoteController#Create method tries to redirect_to I get the following error: NoMethodError in 'NotesController should create note and redirect to subject without javascript' undefined method `spec_mocks_mock_url' for #<NotesController:0x1034495b8> Now this is caused by a bit of Rails trickery that passes an ActiveRecord object (@subject, in our case, which isn't ActiveRecord but a Mock object), eventually to url_for who passes all the options to the Rails' Routing, which then determines the URL. My question is how can I mock Subject so that the correct options are passed so that I my test passes. I've tried passing in :controller = 'subjects' options but no joy. Is there some other way of doing this? Thanks...

  Hello, I am looking for a method to implement lock-free queue data structure that supports single producer, and multiple consumers. I have looked at the classic method by Maged Michael and Michael Scott (1996) but their version uses linked lists. I would like an implementation that makes use of bounded circular buffer. Something that uses atomic variables? On a side note, I am not sure why these classic methods are designed for linked lists that require a lot of dynamic memory management. In a multi-threaded program, all memory management routines are serialized. Aren't we defeating the benefits of lock-free methods by using them in conjunction with dynamic data structures? I am trying to code this in C/C++ using pthread library on a Intel 64-bit architecture. Thank you, Shirish

  Hi, Can anyone advise if its possible to pass data via JQUERY to an ASP.NET MVC controller action and have a view rendered in new browser tab based on the model data passed to the action method. My scenario is that I have a Jqgrid populated with product info on a page. The user would tick the items in the grid that they would like a label produced for. After they've made their slection they would click a button and I would like (if possible) to render a view of that contains a label for each selected item and have the view render in a new browser tab. All the code to allow the selections and post the relevant data back to the action method is all working fine and I know its easy to use the Jquery $(selector).load() command to populate an element on the current page with the HTML returned from the action. But is it possible to populate an element on a page in a new browser tab. If it is how would I go about it? Hope this make sense.

  Hello guys. I'm using ASP.MVC and trying to learn... I have the following controller // get all authors public ActionResult Index() { var autores = autorRepository.FindAllAutores(); return View("Index", autores); } // get authors by type public ActionResult Index(int id) { var autores = autorRepository.FindAllAutoresPorTipo(id); return View("Index", autores); } If i try http://server/Autor/1 I get a 404 error. Why is that? I even tried to create a specific method ListByType(int id) and the correspondent view, but that does not work too (URL: http://server/Autor/ListByType/1) Any ideas? Thanks in advanced EDIT Oh, the http://server/Autor works just fine. The method without parameters is spitting out my view correctly.

• ASP.NET MVC TDD with LINQ and SQL database

  I am trying to start a new MVC project with tests and I thought the best way to go would have 2 databases. 1 for testing against and 1 for when I run the app and use it (also test really as it's not production yet). For the test database I was thinking of putting create table scripts and fill data scripts within the test setup method and then deleting all this in the tear down method. I am going to be using Linq to SQL though and I don't think that will allow me to do this? Will I have to just go the ADO route if I want to do it this way? Or should I just use a mock object and store data as an array or something?. Any tips on best practices? How did Jeff go about doing this for StackOveflow?

• What is the point of JComboBox's getSelectedItem()?

  I just read the JavaDoc for JComboBox (I promise I have a life... I wasn't reading through for fun. =P), and I think the problems I'm having with my program can be attributed to the getSelectedItem() method. The documentation says: Returns the current selected item. If the combo box is editable, then this value may not have been added to the combo box with addItem, insertItemAt or the data constructors. If you can't get values that were added with those methods or with the constructor, of what use is the method? And how can I get the value from an "editable" JComboBox?   I have a Fragment that uses the following XML layout: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:background="@drawable/card" android:clickable="true" android:onClick="editActions" android:orientation="vertical" > <TextView android:id="@+id/title" style="@style/CardTitle" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:duplicateParentState="true" android:text="@string/title_workstation" /> <Button android:id="@+id/factory_button_edit" style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:duplicateParentState="true" android:text="@string/label_edit" /> </LinearLayout> As you can see, I have an onClick parameter set on LinearLayout. Now on the TextView this one is triggered correctly, and on all empty area. Just on the Button it doesn't invoke the onClick method that I set. Is this normal? What do I have to do so that the onClick method is invoked everywhere on the LinearLayout?

  Hi, I'm trying to call a thread on a button click (btn_more) but i cant get it right. The thread is to get some data and update the images. The problem i have is if i only update 4 or 5 images then it works fine. But if i load more than 5 images i will get a force close. At times when the internet is slow I will face the same problem too. Can please help me to solve this problem or provide me some guidance? • Out of memory error in java

  I am getting OutOfMemoryError: java heap snippets of the method: { // step 1: I am creating a 2 dim array int totalCombination = (int) Math.pow(2.0, (double) vowelCount); here vowelCount > 10 // step2: initializing my array // step3: and using that array } My Question: each time this method is called, that array is getting created. Is it possible that the array is not getting released . In windows taskmanager i can see memory used by java is purely incremental. So it is not that at a point heap size is less, but memory is repetitively used and not released somehow. Please let me know if you need more detal. Please help to debug the error. Anuj

Previously, when I use the static publishing approach, I could easily get the flash object by calling these methods: swfobject.registerObject("flash_object", "9", "expressInstall.swf"); var flash_object = swfobject.getObjectById("flash_object"); For some technical reasons, now I have to use the dynamic publishing approach (using swfobject.embedSWF). But, as mentioned in the documentation, the method getObjectById can only be used if you use static publishing approach. Now, how can I access the flash object? Cheers, Andree

  Hi. I got a wsdl file in email. At first I didn't know how to use it. I've simply saved the file to my disk. Opened visual studio...added a service reference...provided path to file, and service was discovered. I opened the object browser to see the types and methods that got imported. I figure anything that ends with the name 'Client' is a good place to start using the web service. I've tried using a simple method to get data but it has run into and expception. Need help in resolving it. System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled Message="The XML element 'ListsRequest' from namespace 'http://www.asd.org/MGMMIRAGE.MDM.WS/Customer' references a method and a type. Change the method's message name using WebMethodAttribute or change the type's root element using the XmlRootAttribute." • f# naming conventions.. WTF??!!

  let w t f = have I missed something? do all value names in F# have to be a single char? preferably x? and do all method names have to abbreviated to a cryptic four chars?? we've had it rammed down our throats for years about descriptive variable/method names in other languages but now this doesnt apply to F#? or it is some coding 'style' bollox? Learning from code examples is hard enough with type inference. why make it harder?

Remaining all file type encryption/decryption is happening properly. (If i decrypt the same file in java the output is coming fine.) • JAVA Classes in Game programming.

  I'm doing a little strategy game to help me learn Java in a fun way. The thing is I visioned the units as objects that would self draw on the game map (using images and buffering) and would react to the mouse actions with listeners attached to them. Now, based on some tutorials I've been reading regarding basic game programming, all seems to be drawn in the Graphics method of my Map class. If a new unit emerges, i just update the Map.Graphics method, it's not as easy as making a new Unit object which would self draw... In this case, I'd be stuck with a whole bunch of Map methods instead of using classes for rendering new things. So my question is, is it possible to use classes for rendering units, interface objects, etc, or i'll have to create methods and just do some kind of structural programming instead of object oriented? I'm a little bit confused and I'd like to have a mental blueprint of how things would be organized. Thanks!

  The only method in a StreamGeometryContext that seems related to ellipses is the ArcTo method. Unfortunately it is heavily geared to joining lines rather than drawing ellipses. In particular, the position of the arc is determined by a starting and ending point. For a full ellipse the two coincide obviously, and the exact orientation becomes undefined.   Hello, I started to learn using Instrument, but I cannot figure it out. • Objective-C : Trouble with file download

  I ran in a bit of trouble downloading files with Objective-C. I use the download decideDestinationWithSuggestedFilename from Apples documentation page. http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/cocoa/conceptual/URLLoadingSystem/Tasks/UsingNSURLDownload.html As long as I want to download just one file it works fine but I want to download an array for files one by one. The problem starts with the second file. Right now my code will trigger the next download itself from the downloadDidFinish Method. Then I will get an unrecognized selector sent to instance error. For me it looks like the NSURLDownload that just finished the download is still in use somehow. Release is called but the must be a problem. If I just put an NSBeep in the downloadDidFinished Method and trigger the next file download manually it works fine. Looks like I have to wait a while till I can start the next download. I know this question is a bit vague but maybe someone got an idea.

• Implementing dry-run in bash scripts

  How would one implement a dry-run option in a bash script? I can think of either wrapping every single command in an if and echoing out the command instead of running it if the script is running with dry-run. Another way would be to define a function and then passing each command call through that function.   I'm trying to teach myself Ruby's Treetop grammar generator. I am finding that not only is the documentation woefully sparse for the "best" one out there, but that it doesn't seem to work as intuitively as I'd hoped. On a high level, I'd really love a better tutorial than the on-site docs or the video, if there is one. I think this may be related to limited lookahead, but I cannot find any information in any of the docs to even cover the idea of evaluating in the "or" context A bit more info that may help. Integer1 is apparently the class holding the eval() method. I have no idea why this is the case. I'm still looking for more info about treetop.
