• What's wrong with output parameters?

  Both in SQL and C#, I've never really liked output parameters. I never passed parameters ByRef in VB6, either. Something about counting on side effects to get something done just bothers me. I know they're a way around not being able to return multiple results from a function, but a rowset in SQL or a complex datatype in C# and VB work just as well, and seem more self-documenting to me. Is there something wrong with my thinking, or are there resources from authoritative sources that back me up? What's your personal take on this and why? What can I say to colleagues that want to design with output parameters that might convince them to use different structures? EDIT: interesting turn- the output parameter I was asking this question about was used in place of a return value. When the return value is "ERROR", the caller is supposed to handle it as an exception. I was doing that but not pleased with the idea. A coworker wasn't informed of the need to handle this condition and as a result, a great deal of money was lost as the procedure failed silently!

• Write-Only Reference in C++?

  Is there a way to code a write-only reference to an object? For example, suppose there was a mutex class: template <class T> class mutex { protected: T _data; public: mutex(); void lock(); //locks the mutex void unlock(); //unlocks the mutex T& data(); //returns a reference to the data, or throws an exception if lock is unowned }; Is there a way to guarantee that one couldn't do this: mutex<type> foo; T& ref; foo.lock(); ref = foo.data(); foo.unlock(); //I have a unguarded reference to foo now On the other hand, is it even worth it? I know that some people assume that programmers won't deliberately clobber the system, but then, why do we have private variables in the first place, eh? It'd be nice to just say it's "Undefined Behavior", but that just seems a little bit too insecure.

The program then fills the array with the first n numbers, where each number is two to the power of the previous. Finally, display array’s contents. • TextBox change is not saved to DataTable

  I'm having trouble with a simple table edit in a Winform application. I must have missed a step. I have a DataSet containing a DataTable connected to a database with a SqlDataAdapter. There is a SqlCommandBuilder on the SqlDataAdapter. On the form, there are TextBoxes which are bound to the DataTable. The binding was done in the Designer and it machine-produced statements like this: this.tbLast.DataBindings.Add(new System.Windows.Forms.Binding("Text", this.belkData, "belk_mem.last", true)); When I fill the row in the DataTable, the values from the database appear in the textboxes, but when I change contents of the TextBox, the changes are apparently not being going to the DataTable. When I try to save change both of the following return null: DataTable dtChanges = dtMem.GetChanges(); DataSet dsChanges = belkData.GetChanges(); What did I forget? • ZEND - Creating custom routes without overwriting the default ones

  I'm trying to create something that looks like facebook's profile URL (http://facebook.com/username). So, at first I tried something like that: $router->addRoute( 'eventName', new Zend_Controller_Router_Route( '/:eventName', array( 'module' => 'default', 'controller' => 'event', 'action' => 'detail' ) ) ); I kept getting the following error: Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Zend_Controller_Router_Exception' with message 'eventName is not specified' in /var/desenvolvimento/padroes/zf/ZendFramework-1.12.0/library/Zend/Controller/Plugin/Broker.php on line 336 Not only I was unable to make that piece of code work, all my default routes were (obviously) overwritten. So I have, for example, stuff like "mydomain.com/admin", that was now returning the same error (as it fell in the same pattern as /:eventName). What I need to do is to create this custom route, without overwriting the default ones and actually working (dûh). I have already checked the online docs and a lot (A LOT) of stuff on google, but I didn't find anything related to the error I'm getting or how to not overwrite the default routes. I'd appreciate anything that could point me the right direction. Thanks.

• Works on emulator but not on device

  Hello Community, I have an inner handler class that calls the method sendMessage. sendMessige is outside the handler class, but inside the conatining Android java class. On the emulator (AVD 2.2) it works fine, but on my Android 2.2 device the method sendMessage is not called at all.   Hi, I am beginner in JavaME. I'd like to make simple dicitionary. The source data is placed on "data.txt" file in "res" directory. The structure is like this: #apple=kind of fruit; #spinach=kind of vegetable; The flow is so simple. User enters word that he want to search in a text field, e.g "apple", system take the user input, read the "data.txt", search the matched word in it, take corresponding word, and display it to another textfield/textbox. • Rails RESTful routs without #new, rspec trouble

  I'm currently writing a Rails app, and hit a somewhat strange quirk. I have a controller PermissionsController, which is mainly for display purposes at the moment. So my routing is locked down: map.resources :permissions, :only => [:index, :show] Unfortunately, when writing the tests, one of the routing tests fails: it "does not recognize #new" do { :get => "/permissions/new" }.should_not be_routable end with the error: Expected 'GET /permissions/new' to fail, but it routed to {"action"=>"show", "id"=>"new", "controller"=>"permissions"} instead Obviously, the #show action's route is matching with /permissions/:id, which also gives the expected error Couldn't find Permission with ID=new if you actually browse to that URL. This is not a serious error, as it is correctly raising an exception with the bad :id parameter, but it's kind of ugly. Is there any way to actually make Rails reject that route? Some trick in the routing options that I'm missing? I suppose I should just leave that test out and ignore it, or maybe remove the whole RESTful idea altogether and go back to a simpler map.connect 'permissions/:id' style. I strongly suspect I'll be expanding this in the future, though, and kind of wanted to keep my controllers consistent with each other. Just having to add occasional :only or :except rules made routes.rb nice and clean...

• What's a good way to do testing a plug-in on multiple Windows and Outlook versions?

  Hello, We're building a plug-in for Outlook that should work on multiple Windows versions (XP, Vista, 7) and also with different Outlook versions (2003, 2007, 2010). The testing problem I am facing right now, is that I can't figure out a good/convenient/thorough way to test the application on multiple Windows and Outlook versions. At the moment, I have a VirtualBox which runs many virtual machines, with different Windows versions and Outlook versions. So I would have a virtual machine with Windows 7 testing Outlook 2010, and another one with Windows 7 testing Outlook 2007, Windows Vista with Outlook 2010 and so on, going through some of the possible combinations. It kind of gets the job done, although it is cumbersome and takes a long time to test. Some of the testing included in the application is unit testing, but this is also rather tied in with the machine I test it on (windows 7 with outlook 2010). For example, I was using ManagementObject recently, which worked fine on my system (and thus passed the unit test for that method), however, using that object threw an exception in another person's system, which crashed the application. I work on Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. The questions: Is there a more elegant way to make the testing process more streamline and more efficient? Any other testing methods you recommend? How would you deal with this problem? Thanks! Looking forward to your replies.

• Android: Scheduling application to start with repeating alarms not working

  I get my Broadcast receiver to set a recurring alarm, to fire up a service. Unfortunately this does not result in the service being called repeatedly (based on logcat). I've experimented with different values for the time interval too. Can someone help? • A better solution than element.Elements("Whatever").First()?

  I have an XML file like this: <SiteConfig> <Sites> <Site Identifier="a" /> <Site Identifier="b" /> <Site Identifier="c" /> </Sites> </SiteConfig> The file is user-editable, so I want to provide reasonable error message in case I can't properly parse it. I could probably write a .xsd for it, but that seems kind of overkill for a simple file. So anyway, when querying for the list of <Site> nodes, there's a couple of ways I could do it: var doc = XDocument.Load(...); var siteNodes = from siteNode in doc.Element("SiteConfig").Element("SiteUrls").Elements("Sites") select siteNode; But the problem with this is that if the user has not included the <SiteUrls> node (say) it'll just throw a NullReferenceException which doesn't really say much to the user about what actually went wrong. Another possibility is just to use Elements() everywhere instead of Element(), but that doesn't always work out when coupled with calls to Attribute(), for example, in the following situation: var siteNodes = from siteNode in doc.Elements("SiteConfig") .Elements("SiteUrls") .Elements("Sites") where siteNode.Attribute("Identifier").Value == "a" select siteNode; (That is, there's no equivalent to Attributes("xxx").Value) Is there something built-in to the framework to handle this situation a little better? What I would prefer is a version of Element() (and of Attribute() while we're at it) that throws a descriptive exception (e.g. "Looking for element <xyz> under <abc> but no such element was found") instead of returning null. I could write my own version of Element() and Attribute() but it just seems to me like this is such a common scenario that I must be missing something...

• Better way to download a binary file?

  I have a site where a user can download a file. Some files are extremely large (the largest being 323 MB). When I test it to try and download this file I get an out of memory exception. The only way I know to download the file is below. The reason I'm using the code below is because the URL is encoded and I can't let the user link directly to the file. Is there another way to download this file without having to read the whole thing into a byte array? • Invalid table view update with insertRowsAtIndexPaths:

  I'm having trouble with insertRowsAtIndexPaths:. I'm not quite sure how it works. I watched the WWDC 2010 video on it, but I'm still getting an error. I thought I was supposed to update the model, then wrap the insertRowsAtIndexPaths: in the tableView beginUpdates and endUpdates calls.   I read in Ext JS in Action ( by J. Garcia) that if we have an instance of Ext.data.Record, we can use the form's loadRecord method to set the form's values. However, he does not give a working example of this (in the example that he uses data is loaded into a form through a file called data.php). I am trying to check the arrayList of Appointments and see if the field (resolved) is set to true, however I am receiving an ConcurrentModification exception during the searchOwner method when trying to set resolved = to true. I've tried using an Iterator in checkRemoval instead of an enhanced for-loop however that didn't help either. I really only need to get the part where the appointment is set to true to work, the checkRemoval seemed to be working early before implementing the changing of the boolean resolved. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

• Fixing an SQL where statement that is ugly and confusing

  I am directly querying the back-end MS SQL Server for a software package. The key field (vehicle number) is defined as alpha though we are entering numeric value in the field. There is only one exception to this, we place an "R" before the number when the vehicle is being retired (which means we sold it or the vehicle is junked). Assuming the users do this right, we should not run into a problem using this method. (Right or wrong isn't the issue here) Fast forward to now. I am trying to query a subset of these vehicle numbers (800 - 899) for some special processing. By doing a range of '800' to '899' we also get 80, 81, etc. If I cast the vehicle number into an INT, I should be able to get the right range. Except that these "R" vehicles are kicking me in the butt now. I have tried where vehicleId not like 'R%' and cast(vehicleId as int) between 800 and 899 however, I get a casting error on one of these "R" vehicles. What does work is where vehicleId not between '800' and '899' and cast(vehicleId as int) between 800 and 899', but I feel there has to be a better way and less confusing way. I have also tried other variations with HAVING and a sub-query all producing a casting error.

Does my Code already support Gzip (maybe this is already done by android and not by my java program) or do I have to add/change smth.? How can I check that it's using Gzip? The variables seem not to write on the php file.
