• FreeBSD high load loopback interface

  I have a problem with a FreeBSD server. There is a FreeBSD 9.0 amd64, two network cards em1 (internet), em0 (local network) configured firewall ipfw, natd, squid (not transparent), the server acts as a gateway for access to the Internet. Next problem: upload via squid is very low. • Slow download speeds on MacBook Pro

  Just as the title says, I am getting very low download speeds on my MacBook Pro. I did a speed test at speedtest.net, and am getting 7 MbPS down, .5 up. However, I can only seem to get 270 KB PS max (averaging 100 K), whether on my school's network or on my home network, wired or wireless. I am on Mac OS X 10.5.8, with Google Chrome. My ethernet settings (under System Preferences - Network - Ethernet Connection - Advanced - Ethernet) are set to "Configure Automatically", "Speed: 100TX", "Duplex: full-duplex, flow-control", and "MTU: Standard (1500)". As far as I can tell, there are no throttles or anything between here and the ISP, so... Any ideas on why I'm getting such low download speeds?

• Seeking some advice on pursuing MS in CS from Stanford or Carnegie Mellon or Caltech

  What kinds of projects are given preference in top notch colleges like Stanford, Caltech, etc to get admission into MS programme in Computer Science? I have an average academic portfolio. I'm pursuing Btech from a not so popular university in India with an aggregate of 67%. I'm good at designing algorithms and possess good knowledge of core subjects but helpless with my percentage. So, I think the only way I can impress them is with my project(s). Can anyone please suggest me the kinds of projects that are given preference by such top level institutes? Could you please also suggest some good projects? My area of interest would be Artificial Intelligence or any application/software/algorithm design which could be of some help to common people. Or if you have any other random idea for my project then please share it with me. Note: Web based projects and management projects like lib management wouldn't be my priority.

• Monitoring bandwidth/latency/jitter between 2 sites?

  I have 2 sites connected via an MPLS network and I'd like to do the following: setup a host on each end that can "talk" back and forth between each other and somehow report/log what kind of throughput, jitter, latency, etc. they are experiencing between each other in 5 minute intervals. Something similar to Qcheck but that can be automated. Bottom line is I'm trying to determine if the WAN network is "stable" throughout the day or if something is wrong. We have video conferences between these sites and even at 1024kbps calls we are experiencing delays and jitter. I'm hoping to exonerate the network with some testing.

• Cannot authenticate to SBS 2003

  I am trying to connect my machine to my work's entirely windows network and I am having a few issues: Whenever I try to access the server, the authentication dialog just keeps popping back up. I cannot connect to the printers (it says connecting to device failed) I have tried setting up samba, winbind, kerberos, likewise open all to no avail. I have a feeling I am just setting them up wrong.   I am trying to set up a server on my home network which will eventually host rails. I am not great in linux server and i try to follow the prompt. I did succesfully get to a black screen which then prompts me to a username then password to then do anything ( assuming). Then i want to install ubuntu server with gui here the command i try with sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop Which however give me the following error Err http... inRelease w Failed to fetch ht... So been ignored if i try the desktop one i get E: unable to locate package ubuntu E: unable to locate package desktop So i am assuming i am not connected to the internet, so i try the following command sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces here the output it gives me and i know my gateway on my laptop is 192.168.1.1 address: 192.168.1.148 netmask: 255.255.255.0 network: 192.168.1.0 broadcasts: 192.168.1.255 gateway: 192.168.1.1 Btw i do not know the command to get out of vi and saving it. • OpenWrt Backfire 10.03 Frequently Becoming Unresponsive (Bridged Client)

  I have a Linksys WRT54G version 2 that I've flashed with OpenWrt Backfire 10.03. It's acting as a bridged client using the wl.o driver to give me network access in my home office, which is in a far corner of my house in a position that would make it exceedingly difficult to fish network cabling in through the walls. I have three network-ready devices attached to the device that don't currently support WiFi, including a networked printer. Ever since I migrated from WhiteRussian, which was also set up as a bridged client, to Backfire, the device has been becoming unresponsive, as though the OS itself has crashed or frozen. The WLAN light becomes completely solid and the LAN lights stay mostly solid, blipping off and then back on again maybe once a second or so. They all blink more or less in unison. Is there some way I can diagnose why this is happening so I can fix it? Right now, the only way to fix it is to unplug the device and plug it back in.

  Currently going through a process of testing two AdWords ppc providers at the same time from two separate AdWords accounts. However they will require access to my GA account for linking and ecommerce tracking. Which means that they will be able to see each others results. I dont want this; Is it possible to set up GA so that; Company A only sees Adwords results associated to their AdWords management via GA Company B only sees Adwords results associated to their AdWords management via GA And each company never sees the other company's Adwords results? 100 positive karma points to anyone who can shed some light on this. • dhcpd pool exhaustion - What's the result?

  I have a DHCP server that serves leases to several houndred, maybe up to a thousand, different clients on an average day. The pool consists of 242 IPs, and due to the highly dynamic nature of the network, it's enough 99% of the time (most devices are gone from the network in a few minutes), despite having a lease time of 3600. Now, imagine if more clients than that connect to the network during an hour. The sollution is obvious: Decrease lease time, or increase the DHCP pool, however, what i would like to know: What happens when dhcpd has exhausted the pool? Are new DHCP requests simply ignored?

• How to get wireless (Alfa) operate in full power and speed up wireless Internet?

  I am using Wireless to connect to the internet (router). My laptop has Atheros wireless (AR 242x/542x) adapter but the router is a little bit far-away from my room so I have to use an external wireless adapter i.e. Alfa (Realtek 8187) for connectivity. However, since I have started using Ubuntu I noticed that Alfa is not working in full power, internet speed in Ubuntu is much slower than in Windows on my laptop. When I am using Windows 7 the LED (bulb) on Alfa blinks as it should, but when in Ubuntu, it doesn't blink rather it is on but very dim. Connection using Atheros adapter is also the same (slow)... I have tried 4 methods (I found on the Internet) to troubleshoot this matter but no success. It seems to me that Ubuntu/Linux is not letting these wireless adapters to operate in full strength. iwconfig shows that power management is off for both. So what's the problem? • How to achieve reliable Gigabit Ethernet Link with my Acer Aspire Revo R3610?

  I want to stream HD movies over my wired Gigabit LAN from my PC to my Acer Aspire Revo R3610. It's connected with a 3ft Cat5e patch cable to my Netgear GS605v2 Switch. The PC acting as File Server is connected at 1Gbps to the Switch. Network driver options are set to defaults, including automatic speed/duplex negotiation on both machines. The Revo will not connect to my Network Switch at 1Gbps - the OS reports that it reverts to 100Mbps either shortly after connection or immediately upon connection. Through a process of elimination (trying different drivers, patch cables, ports on the switch, and other 1Gbps-capable devices connected to the Network switch which successfully achieve 1Gbps links and performance) I have drawn the conclusion there is either a Hardware or Software (Driver) issue with the Revo itself. I have performed tests using Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. Can anyone offer insight on Gigabit Ethernet with the Revo?

If these components are not effectively shared by project leads and understood by stakeholders, project outcomes can be jeopardized and budgets may incur unnecessary risk. As reported by PMI’s 2013 Pulse of the Profession, an organization’s ability to meet project timelines, budgets and especially goals significantly impacts its ability to survive—and even thrive. The Pulse study revealed that the most crucial success factor in project management is effective communication to all stakeholders—a critical core competency for public agencies. PMI’s 2013 Pulse of the Profession report revealed that US$135 million is at risk for every US$1 billion spent on a project. Further research on the importance of effective project team communication uncovers that a startling 56 percent (US$75 million of that US$135 million) is at risk due to ineffective communication. • OpenVPN to connect remote networks, peer to peer instead of client/server possible?

  I would like to connect two remote networks using OpenVPN. I am very new to this we are very small and don't have a sys/network admin. What are the possible setups to have both networks both live on a common LAN via OpenVPN? I would prefer to use the UDP peer model rather than client/server. Is there a way to set that up instead? I can't see how because no computer on existing network A has a routable address to any computer on existing network B and vice versa.

• Too many processes?

  VMware Fusion v3.0.1 One vm for Windows XP, converted and recently expanded the disk size. Mac OS X 10.5.8, 2 x 3 GHz dual-core intel xeon machine. Immediately after booting, and before VMware Fusion is launched, the Activity Monitor shows eight processes associated with "vm". What caught my eye is the duplicates: netifup and dhcpd. I noticed this while trying to re-establish network connectivity after the upgrade to 3.0.1. I am not sure when the network connection was clobbered, so I cannot say it happend during the upgrade. Is eight processes typcial? I expect about six, as listed in other notes and documents on the web site. Could this be related to the failure to connect to the network?

I don't know if anyone on my network is using or even aware of such application but my questions are: 1- How to protect myself from this program? 2- How to know if someone using such application against me? 3- Is Tor Bundle capable of protecting me from Cain & Abel? 4- If I filled my e-mail password via SSL page, Can Cain & Abel collect it? 5- Is it safe to use SKYPE or Yahoo Messenger voice chat if some one using Cain & Abel on my network?

  I'm studying for my CCNA exam and I have to create a VLSM scheme using RIP-2 for the following requirements: (this is an exercise) Use the class C network 192.168.1.0 network for your point-to-point connections Using the Class A network 10.0.0.0, plan for the following number of hosts in each location: New York: 1000 Chicago: 500 Los Angeles: 1000 On the LAN and point-to-point connections, select subnet masks that use the smallest ranges of IP addresses possible given the above requirements. In all cases, use the lowest possible subnet numbers. Subnet zero is allowed. My guess is the following: New York: S0/0 192.168.1.1 /24 Fa0/0 10.1.0.1 netmask 255.255.248.0 - because we need 1000 hosts Chicago: S0/0 192.168.1.2 /24 Fa0/0 10.2.0.1 netmask 255.255.252.0 (for 500 hosts) Los Angeles: S0/0 192.168.2.3 /24 Fa0/0 10.3.0.1 netmask 255.255.248.0 (for 1000 hosts) Is this a good configuration? • PDAnet on Android IP on PC is not public IP. Where does the NAT take place, PDAnet or Verizon?

  When using PDAnet on a PC (Win7 ultimate) to USB tether a Motorola Droid on Verizon 3G the IP address of the PC appears to be public - 64.245.171.115 (64-245-171-115.pools.spcsdns.net) - but connections show as coming from another public IP - 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com). Someone is performing Network Address Translation - either PDAnet or within the Verizon 3G network. Can someone tell me who is doing the NAT? Is it PDAnet or is it at Verizon? Is there any possibility of setting up port forwarding, such that connections to the public IP 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com) are forward to the PC? We are testing a network protocol that requires either a true public IP or forwarding a range of ports from the public Internet to the system on which the software runs (actually Linux hosted by VMware Player or Workstation on a PC running Windows).

You will get the opportunity to exchange with Oracle experts and customers having successfully evolve their IT by leveraging Oracle technologies. You will also get the latest news on some of the Oracle systems announcements made during OOW 2012. During this event we will make an update about Oracle and Clouds, from private to public and hybrid models. So in preparing this session, I thought it was a good start to make a status of Cloud Computing in France, and CIO requirements in particular. Starting in 2009 with the first Cloud Camp in Paris, the market has evolved, but the basics are still the same : think hybrid. From Traditional IT to Clouds One size doesn't fit all, and for big companies having already an IT in place, there will be parts eligible to external (public) cloud, and parts that would be required to stay inside the firewalls, so ability to integrate both side is key.  None the less, one of the major impact of Cloud Computing trend on IT, reported by Forrester, is the pressure it makes on CIO to evolve towards the same model that end-users are now used to in their day to day life, where self-service and flexibility are paramount. This is what is driving IT to transform itself toward "a Global Service Provider", or for some as "IT "is" the Business" (see : Gartner Identifies Four Futures for IT and CIO), and for both models toward a Private Cloud Service Provider. In this journey, there is still a big difference between most of existing external Cloud and a firm IT : the number of applications that a CIO has to manage. Most cloud providers today are overly specialized, but at the end of the day, there are really few business processes that rely on only one application. So CIOs has to combine everything together external and internal. And for the internal parts that they will have to make them evolve to a Private Cloud, the scope can be very large. This will often require CIOs to evolve from their traditional approach to more disruptive ones, the time has come to introduce new standards and processes, if they want to succeed. So let's have a look at the different Cloud models, what type of users they are addressing, what value they bring and most importantly what needs to be done by the  Cloud Provider, and what is left over to the user. IaaS, PaaS, SaaS : what's provided and what needs to be done First of all the Cloud Provider will have to provide all the infrastructure needed to deliver the service. And the more value IT will want to provide, the more IT will have to deliver and integrate : from disks to applications. As we can see in the above picture, providing pure IaaS, left a lot to cover for the end-user, that’s why the end-user targeted by this Cloud Service is IT people. If you want to bring more value to developers, you need to provide to them a development platform ready to use, which is what PaaS is standing for, by providing not only the processors power, storage and OS, but also the Database and Middleware platform. SaaS being the last mile of the Cloud, providing an application ready to use by business users, the remaining part for the end-users being configuring and specifying the application for their specific usage. In addition to that, there are common challenges encompassing all type of Cloud Services : Security : covering all aspect, not only of users management but also data flows and data privacy Charge back : measuring what is used and by whom Application management : providing capabilities not only to deploy, but also to upgrade, from OS for IaaS, Database, and Middleware for PaaS, to a full Business Application for SaaS. Scalability : ability to evolve ALL the components of the Cloud Provider stack as needed Availability : ability to cover “always on” requirements Efficiency : providing a infrastructure that leverage shared resources in an efficient way and still comply to SLA (performances, availability, scalability, and ability to evolve) Automation : providing the orchestration of ALL the components in all service life-cycle (deployment, growth & shrink (elasticity), upgrades,...) Management : providing monitoring, configuring and self-service up to the end-users Oracle Strategy and Clouds For CIOs to succeed in their Private Cloud implementation, means that they encompass all those aspects for each component life-cycle that they selected to build their Cloud. That’s where a multi-vendors layered approach comes short in terms of efficiency. That’s the reason why Oracle focus on taking care of all those aspects directly at Engineering level, to truly provide efficient Cloud Services solutions for IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. We are going as far as embedding software functions in hardware (storage, processor level,...) to ensure the best SLA with the highest efficiency. The beauty of it, as we rely on standards, is that the Oracle components that you are running today in-house, are exactly the same that we are using to build Clouds, bringing you flexibility, reversibility and fast path to adoption.
