• BIDS Helper 1.6 Beta Release (now with SQL 2012 support!)

  The beta for BIDS Helper 1.6 was just released. We have not updated the version notification just yet as we would like to get some feedback on people's experiences with the SQL 2012 version. So if you are using SQL 2012, go grab it and let us know how you go (you can post a comment on this blog post or on the BIDS Helper site itself). This is the first release that supports SQL 2012 and consequently also the first release that runs in Visual Studio 2010. A big thanks to Greg Galloway for doing the bulk of the work on this release. Please note that if you are doing an xcopy deploy that you will need to unblock the files you download or you will get a cryptic error message. This appears to be caused by a security update to either Visual Studio or the .Net framework – the xcopy deploy instructions have been updated to show you how to do this. Below are the notes from the release page. ====== This beta release is the first to support SQL Server 2012 (in addition to SQL Server 2005, 2008, and 2008 R2). Since it is marked as a beta release, we are looking for bug reports in the next few months as you use BIDS Helper on real projects.   In Windows Server 2003/IIS6 land we typically create an app pool that runs as the identity of an AD account created with minimal privileges simply for that purpose. This same domain user would also be granted access to SQL Server so that any ASP.NET application in that app pool would be able to connect to SQL Server with Integrated Security=SSPI. We are making a brave move to the world of Windows Server 2008 R2/IIS7.5 and are looking to replicate this model, but I am struggling with how to make the application pool in IIS7.5 run as the identity of an AD account? I know this sounds simple and hopefully it is, but my attempts so far have been fruitless. Should the application pool identity be a 'Custom account' for a domain account? Does the domain account need to be added to any groups?

It works now too, without the 'Id' column, and using the NodeId and LocalId as a combined PK. So now the question is, why isn't it allowed to have a calculated column as PK for replication with conflict detection?

• MOSS 2007 SP2 - Error while provisioning SSP.

  This is a brand new installation I am trying to provision the first SSP for MOSS and I keep getting the following error: (Provisioning failed: A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.)) The error also keeps appearing in the Application Event Log as event ID 7888. Google searches tell me its a connection between the Sharepoint server and the SQL server however, this is a production SQL Server which has several databases on it that do not experience any problems. These databases also include the Central Admin and Web Application databases for Sharepoint which are all working fine. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  I don't have access to the Active Directory settings, nor do I have access to change anything on the linked server. From everything I've read, it seems like this means I cannot use Kerberos - which is a big problem, because I don't know how to use a linked server without it. Is there any way to connect to a linked server without Kerberos? Exact problem description When I connect to the linked server while sitting in front of my server, it works fine; but when I try to connect to the linked server from any other computer (delegating through my server), it gives the error: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456) It seems that this is the "double-hop problem," and the usual solution is to enable Kerberos, which requires access to AD and the linked server. I get the same error when I set security to "Be made using the login's current security context," and I can't use "Be made using this security context" because that appears to use SQL-authentication (which is not enabled on the linked server) instead of NTLM

It's been running fine -- but now I want to change the number of days the copied files are retained on the secondary server. Is it simply a matter of going back to the GUI and change it there.   I have one website with modx installed to www.website.com/modx/ --- Keep in mind there are other Websites In Progress on this storage server. My issue is that I'm moving all this: templates, template variables, chunks, snippets, etc to another server that already has modx installed in it. My first instinct is to go to phpMyAdmin and export the sql file and import them to the new website's server. However, an error occurred when I attempted to do this. It had found many duplicates in fields that were associated a PK (due to it being the same website just a redesign). I don't have to go and dump the table of the oldsite and then upload the new sql file do i? Please advise.

• How can I get Transaction Logs to auto-truncate after Backup

  Setup: Sql Server 2008 R2, databases set up with Full recovery mode. I have set up a maintenance plan that backs up the transaction logs for a number of databases on the server. It is set to create backup files in sub-directories for each database, verify backup integrity is turned on, and backup compression is used. The job is set to run once every 2 hours during business hours (8am-6pm). I have tested the job and it runs fine, creates the log backup files as it should. However, from what I have read, once the transaction log is backed up, it should be ok to truncate the transaction log. I do not see any option for doing this in the Sql Server Maintenance Plan designer. How can I set this up?

  I've been trying out TFS 2010 Beta 2 on my local machine, or at least, had installed ready to do so. I had some issues with my MSSQL2008 server so I completely uninstalled and re-installed it and that sorted it. However, I'm now in limbo with TFS. I have the software installed, but it has none of the SQL databases installed that go with it. I had no data and am not precious about how to go about it. I figure completely uninstalling and re-installing might be an idea and will most likely fix it (repair didn't work). Is there a quicker way? • Crossover cable in addition to normal network connection on servers?

  I have 2 servers, both with Windows 2003 R2 Each have 2 NIC ports that are 10/100/1000 They are both connected to our LAN + joined to the domain (1 NIC port free on each server) The problem is that our main router is only 10/100 on the ports that these servers are connected to. Since one server is going to host SQL 2005 and the other will be running Altiris NS7, I was hoping that I could use a crossover cable to connect the two directly, thus taking advantage of their 1gbps NIC cards. Is this possible? If so what steps do I need to take to accomplish this? What needs to be done to make sure that when the app server is communicating with the SQL server that it is using the direct link vs traversing the LAN? Thanks a lot!

  I'm trying to set up a MS SQL 2000 server to use an already existing SSL certificate installed on the server. I verified that the certificate shows up in the Personal/Certificate folder of the account that is running the MSSQLSERVER service using the Certificate MMC snap-in. I also verified that the certificate for the CA is installed under the Trusted Root Certificate Authorities. Additionally, to make sure that it is using this specific certificate I created a Certificate registry value of type REG_BINARY in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib and I set it to the certificates thumbprint like it mentions in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/276553 Finally, I opened up the Server Network Utility, checked Force protocol encryption, clicked OK, and restarted the MSSQLSERVER service. Unfortunately, it fails to start and looking at the event log it's failing with: 19015: Encryption requested but no valid certificate was found. SQL Server terminating. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Where did I go wrong?

They are not admins of any kind. It looks like it is asking for permission to allow SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 to run. When I put my credentials in, it just brings up the Print dialog box (this is fine, just stop asking for credentials). I know this might sound silly but I downloaded and installed "SQL Server Reporting Services 2008" hopping my credentials would give permission right from the beginning. Giving the users local admin, I was told is not an option. Note: I did post this on community (dot) dynamics (dot) com but, they are not a very active website. Thanks for any help even if it just points me in the right direction!
