  • ASP.net User Controls and business entities

    Hi all, I am currently developing some user controls so that I can use them at several places within a project. One control is a about editing a list of addresses for a customer. Since this needs to be done at several places within the project I want to make it a simple user control. The user control contains a repeater control. By default the repeater displays one address item to be edited. If more addresses need to be added, the user can click on a button to append an additional address to be entered. The user control should work for creating new addresses as well as editing existing ones. The address business entity looks something like this: public class Address { public string Street { get; set; } public City City { get; set; } public Address(string street, City city) { Check.NotNullOrEmpty(street); Check.NotNull(city); Street = street; City = city; } } As you can see an address can only be instantiated if there is a street and a city. Now my idea was that the user control exposes a collection property called Addresses. The getter of this property collects the addresses from the repeater and return it in a collection. The setter would databind the addresses to be edited to the repeater. Like this: public partial class AddressEditControl : System.Web.UI.UserControl { public IEnumerable<Address> Addresses { get { IList<Address> addresses = new List<Address>(); // collect items from repeater and create addresses foreach (RepeaterItem item in addressRepeater.Items) { // collect values from repeater item addresses.Add(new Address(street, city)); } return addresses; } set { addressRepeater.DataSource = value; addressRepeater.DataBind(); } } } First I liked this approach since it is object oriented makes it very easy to reuse the control. But at some place in my project I wanted to use this control so a user could enter some addresses. And I wanted to pre-fill the street input field of each repeater item since I had that data so the user doesn't need to enter it all by his self. Now the problem is that this user control only accepts addresses in a valid state (since the address object has only one constructor). So I cannot do: IList<Addresses> addresses = new List<Address>(); addresses.Add(new Address("someStreet", null)); // i dont know the city yet (user has to find it out) addressControl.Addresses = addresses; So the above is not possible since I would get an error from address because the city is null. Now my question: How would I create such a control? ;) I was thinking about using an Address DTO instead of a real address, so it can later be mapped to an address. That way I can pass in and out an address collection which addresses don't need to be valid. Or did I misunderstood the way user controls work? Are there any best practices?

    Hi everybody I need to add multiple user controls to a panel for further editing of the contained data. When i trigger an update event, the user control event is fired correctly, but all fields and controls of the user control are NULL. After a bit of research, i had to come to the conclusion that the event is fired before the controls are initialized... Is there any way to prevent such behavior / to override the page lifecycle somehow? I cannot initialize the user controls in the page's Init-event, because i have to access the Session-Store (not initialized in Page_Init). Any advice is welcome... EDIT: Since we hold all criteria informations in the storage backend (including the count of criteria) and that store uses the userid from the session, we cannot use Page_Init... just for clarification EDIT #2: I managed to get past some of the problems. Since i'm now using simple types, im able to bind all the data declaratively (using a repeater with a simple ItemTemplate). It is bound to the control, they are rendered in correct fashion. On Postback, all the data is rebound to the user control, data is available in the OnDataBinding and OnLoad events, everything looks fine. But as soon it enters the real event (bound to the button control of the user control), all field values are lost somehow... Does anybody know, how the page lifecycle continues to process the request after Databinding/Loading ? I'm going crazy about this issue...

  • 2-Bay External HDD Enclosure in JBOD mode fails to detect both drives (Linux & Windows)

    I recently purchased a couple of USB 3.0 External HDD Enclosures to use for storage and backup; the idea was to have one act as backup to the other, with 4 x 3TB drives in total. However, the second drive in each is not accessible in either Linux nor Windows, and I could not determine the reason. 1. Situation The two enclosures are slightly different (couldn't find them in stock at the same time) yet from many little details appear to be the same Chinese base design with a tweaked outer shell. The models are: Sharkoon 2-Bay RAID Box Fantec MR-35DU3 The drives are Seagate 3TB Barracuda ST33000651AS, firmware CC44, all identical. From reading manuals and online sources, I determined that JBOD would be the optimal setup for my needs -- addressing the two drives separately in each enclosure would be important, making it easy to swap drives and mix&match them if needed; all the other modes implied the controller doing a combination of the drives. The software used was Debian GNU/Linux - testing/wheezy - kernel 2.6.39-2 and Windows 7 Ultimate. 2. Description of the problem Now, here comes the problem: every time I connect either of the enclosures to a PC using the supplied cable (tried a different one as well), only the HDD in the top bay is readable, the one below is detected yet errors out in various ways. According to the manuals, it should not happen: in JBOD, the system should be able to "see" two separate drives upon connection. This happens with both enclosures and any combination of HDDs (i.e. if I swap them, the same thing happens), so the HDDs are good and I think so are the enclosures (two different companies making similar products that failed in an identical fashion would be very unlikely). The top HDD can be used fine every time, I actually tried a speed test from Linux and got about 150MiB/s reads, so all is working as it should; the one below refuses to work every time. So the failure is consistent. To make sure this was not some obscure Linux bug, I tried the same under Windows 7, and the system also only created one drive letter for a drive of 3TB size (so it was only seeing one instead of both). Placing an older, known good, 2TB drive in the top bay made that the one recognised, so we have the same issue under Windows as well. Log entries under Linux (tested here with a 3TB and a 2TB drive so I could differentiate them; either one works in the top enclosure, in the test setup the 3TB one is on top).   • Root certificate authority works windows/linux but not mac osx - (malformed)

    I have created a self-signed root certificate authority which if I install onto windows, linux, or even using the certificate store in firefox (windows/linux/macosx) will work perfectly with my terminating proxy. I have installed it into the system keychain and I have set the certificate to always trust. Within the chrome browser details it says "The certificate that Chrome received during this connection attempt is not formatted correctly, so Chrome cannot use it to protect your information. Error type: Malformed certificate" I used this code to create the certificate: openssl genrsa -des3 -passout pass:***** -out private/server.key 4096 openssl req -batch -passin pass:***** -new -x509 -nodes -sha1 -days 3600 -key private/server.key -out server.crt -config ../openssl.cnf If the issue is NOT that it is malformed (because it works everywhere else) then what else could it be? Am I installing it incorrectly? To be clear: Within the windows/linux OS, all browsers work perfectly. Within mac only firefox works if it uses its internal certificate store and not the keychain. It's the keychain method of importing a certificate that causes the issue. Thus, all browsers using the keychain will not work.     I am testing a client application that authenticates using RSA SecurID hardware tokens. The authentication is failing and I am not finding any useful information in the log files. I am using Authentication Manager 8.0 and the Java SDK. I have a traffic capture which I would like to analyze with Wireshark to and from port 5500 on the authentication agent. But I can't find the packet format searching the internet or on the the RSA SecurCare knowledge base. Can anybody direct me to the packet format?     When a user is not logged in and tries to access an page that requires login, what is the correct HTTP status code for a redirect to the login page? I don't feel that any of the 3xx fit that description. 10.3.1 300 Multiple Choices The requested resource corresponds to any one of a set of representations, each with its own specific location, and agent- driven negotiation information (section 12) is being provided so that the user (or user agent) can select a preferred representation and redirect its request to that location. Unless it was a HEAD request, the response SHOULD include an entity containing a list of resource characteristics and location(s) from which the user or user agent can choose the one most appropriate. The entity format is specified by the media type given in the Content- Type header field. Depending upon the format and the capabilities of the user agent, selection of the most appropriate choice MAY be performed automatically. However, this specification does not define any standard for such automatic selection. If the server has a preferred choice of representation, it SHOULD include the specific URI for that representation in the Location field; user agents MAY use the Location field value for automatic redirection. What kind of bindings can I create on the TextBox in my UserControl so that it can look up and see that object?! (I have tested the exact same with an actual rendered Viewport3D, so I know the issue is not with my converter method.) Any idea how I can get WPF to assign the ActualWidth and ActualHeight based on my Width and Height settings? I tried setting the HorizontalAlignment and VerticalAlignment to Left and Top, respectively, and I also messed with the MinWidth and MinHeight, but none of these properties had any effect on the ActualWidth or ActualHeight.

    I'm diving into iPhone OS development on the iPad and one of the things I'm playing with is the SplitView template. The template provides a window with a UISplitView view, containing the Root View (on the left of the window) and the Detail View (on the right of the window). The Root View is a subclass of a TableView. Rather than having the entire Root View consist of a TableView, I'd like it to contain a DatePicker view along with the TableView under it. When I go into IB and try and drop a DatePicker into the Root View, it won't let me. It will only let me add a DatePicker view to the Detail View. Why wont IB let me drop a DatePicker view into the Root View? How can I add a DatePicker to the RootView in addition to the TableView?     (Infragistics 2008 Vol. 3, CLR 2.0) Infragistics's UltraGrid comes with a column chooser user control, which is simply a vertical arrangement of columns with checkboxes that toggle a column's hidden state. In addition, it allows you to pick a column and drag it directly to the grid so you don't have to manually position it afterwards. (This is particularly handy when you already have a lot of visible columns and have no clue where the new one ended up.) I'm building my own column chooser based on an UltraTree. Getting the checkboxes to behave the same wasn't an issue, but I haven't found a way to drag a column from the tree to the grid and have it accept it.   • WPF - Binding an ObservableCollection Dependency Property within a UserControl

    I have a control class DragGrid : Grid { ... } which inherits from the original grid and enables dragging and resizing its child elements. I need to bind a custom DP named WorkItemsProperty to an observable collection of type WorkItem (implements INotifyPropertyChanged). Each element in the grid is bound to a collection item. Whenever the user adds a new item dynamically at runtime (the items cannot be declared in XAML!), or deletes an item from that collection, the WorkItems DP on the DragGrid should be updated, and the children in the grid (where each child represents a WorkItem collection item). My question is how does the DP notify the control about which child element in the grid must be removed, changed ('change' means user dragged an element, or resized it with the mouse) or added, and how would I identify which one of the existing children is the one that needs to be deleted or changed. I understand that this is where the DependencyPropertyChangedCallback comes in. But that only gets called when the DP property is set anew, not when something inside the collection changes (like add, remove item). So in the end, does the DragGrid control somehow need to subscribe to the CollectionChanged event? At what point would I hook up the event handler for that?

    I have a simple datagrid example with silverlight 3, and am populating it with the .NET ria services using a DomainDataSource along with a DataPager declaratively (nothing in the code-behind), and am experiencing this problem: The LoadSize is 30, and the Page size is 15, and when the page is loaded, the 1st and 2nd page appear correctly, but when I go beyond the 2nd page, nothing shows up in the grid. This used to work in the silverlight 3 beta with the Mix 2009 preview of .NET Ria services, and I've got a really simple example and have verified that the Service on the web project gets called to load a new batch, but the grid doesn't show any data. Can anyone shed any light as to why grid displays data only for the initial load of data and not subsequent batches from the pager?     I'm trying to learn about grails with Google App Engine and JPA by following a few tutorials: http://www.morkeleb.com/2009/08/12/grails-and-google-appengine-beginners-guide/ http://inhouse32.appspot.com/index.html http://grails.org/plugin/app-engine I've got grails 1.3.0 RC 2, and App Engine SDK 1.3.3, and I'm using Windows 7. The steps that I try are: grails create-app appname cd appname grails install-plugin app-engine. I answer jpa when asked about jdo/jpa.
