    Hello, I have a PHP web application which basically maintains a set of user profiles and their records. My users are using the app via browser. I am planning to build a standalone desktop client/app for WINDOWS OS, in which a user can login, retrieve and modify the records. Which language + framework will be simple, fast and lightweight to use? I can think of the following options: Microsoft Visual Basic - simplest? Microsoft Visual C++ Python PHP + bambalam compiler Are there any other options? And which of these is better?

  • Is it OK to set state within Event Raising methods?

    I ran across this pattern in the code of a library I'm using. It sets state within the event raising method, but only if the event is not null. protected virtual void OnMyEvent(EventArgs e) { if(MyEvent != null) { State = "Executing"; // Only sets state if MyEvent != null. MyEvent(this,e); } } Which means that the state is not set when overriding the method: protected override void OnMyEvent(EventArgs e) { base.OnMyEvent(e); Debug.Assert( State == "Executing" ); // This fails } but is only set when handling the event: foo.MyEvent += (o, args) => Debug.Assert(State == "Executing"); // This passes Setting state within the if(MyEvent != null) seems like bad form, but I've checked the Event Design Guidelines and it doesn't mention this. Do you think this code is incorrect? If so, why? (Reference to design guidelines would be helpful). Edit for Context: It's a Control, I'm trying to create subclass of it, and the state that it's setting is calling EnsureChildControls() conditionally based upon there being an event handler. I can call EnsureChildControls() myself, but I consider that something of a hack.

    Hey There, I just came to realize, by reading some questions and answers on StackOverflow, that adding event handlers using += in C# (or i guess, other .net languages) can cause common memory leaks... I have used event handlers like this in the past many times, and never realized that they can cause, or have caused, memory leaks in my applications. How does this work (meaning, why does this actually cause a memory leak) ? How can I fix this problem ? Is using -= to the same event handler enough ? Are there common design patterns or best practices for handling situations like this ? Example : How am I supposed to handle an application that has many different threads, using many different event handlers to raise several events on the UI ? Are there any good and simple ways to monitor this efficiently in an already built big application ? Thanks in advance!

    I posted a question similar to this earlier, although it seemed like it was much easier. I know the underlying principle of Big-O notation says that to prove that 2^sqrt(log(n)) is O(n^a), there must exist a positive value c for which c(n^a) = 2^sqrt(log(n)) for all values n = N. c*n^a >= 2^sqrt(log(n)) c >= 2^sqrt(log(n)) / n^a This number will always be positive so long as n 0. I suppose I could make N = 1 just to be safe. c = 2^sqrt(log(n)) / n^a N = 1 c*n^a = 2^sqrt(log(n) <= 2^log(n) for all values of n >= 1 Now, I know this is incorrect, because I could just as easily claim that the function 2^sqrt(log(n)) is O(n)...

  • Vanilla WPF application hangs on one customer's machine

    At a customer, one of our WPF applications started to hang. When trying to reproduce the problem with a minimal working example, I discovered that even the most basic (non-trivial) WPF application will hang on that machine. Example A: Create a new C# WPF project in Visual Studio 2008. Change nothing, compile it and run it on the customer's machine. It will run. Example B: Take Example A, and add a TextBlock to the main form Window1: <Window ...> <Grid> <TextBlock>Test</TextBlock> </Grid> </Window> Compile the application and run it on the customer's machine. It will hang: The title bar and the window border is visible, the inside is transparent and the window does not react to anything (cannot be moved or closed). The application must be shut down using the task manager. Obviously, this customer's WPF is broken. Is this a known issue, i.e., has anyone encountered it before and already knows how to solve it (e.g. reinstall .net 3.5 SP1, etc.)? The development machine is W7SP1, the customer's machine is XP (probably SP3, didn't check).

    Hello, I need improve the traceability in a Web Application that usually run on fixed db user. The DBA should have a fast access for the information about the heavy users that are degrading the database. 5 years ago, I implemented a .NET ORM engine which makes a log of user and the server using the DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO package. Using a wrapper above the connection manager with the following code: DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO.SET_MODULE('" + User + " - " + appServerMachine + "',''); Each time that a connection get a connection from the pool, the package is executed to log the information in the V$SESSION. Has anyone discover or implemented a solution for this problem using the Toplink or Hibernate? Is there a default implementation for this problem?   • Detect Application Shutdown in C# NET?

    I am writing a small console application (will be ran as a service) that basically starts a Java app when it is running, shuts itself down if the Java app closes, and shuts down the Java app if it closes. I think I have the first two working properly, but I don't know how to detect when the .NET application is shutting down so that I can shutdown the Java app prior to that happening. Google search just returns a bunch of stuff about detecting Windows shutting down. As far as I understand does pmvarrun tells the system how many active session (e.g. logins) a user has on the system.   • Duplicate DNS Zones (Error 4515 in Event Log )

    I am getting these two error in the DNS Event log (errors at end of question). I have confirmed I do have duplicate zones. I am wondering which ones to delete. The DomainDNSZone contains all of our DNS records but it does not have the _msdcs zone.... that is in the ForestDNSZone with the duplicates that are not in use. here is a picture of that 3 Questions. I understand the advantages of having DNS in the ForestDNSZone. so... Why is DNS using the DomainDNSZone and is that acceptable considering _msdcs... is in the ForestDNSZone? If so, should I just delete the DC=1.168.192.in-addr.arpa and DC=supernova.local from the ForestDNSZone? Or should I try to get those to be the ones in use? What are those steps? I understand how to delete. That is simple but if i must move zones some info would be appreaciated there. Just to confirm. from my understanding. I can delete the two duplicates in the ForestDNSZone and leave the _msdcs.supernova.local as thats required there. This will resolve the erros I see. Just fyi when I look in those folders from the ForestDNSZone they have just 2 and 1 entries respectively. So obviously not in use compared to the others. I am pretty sure I understand the steps to complete this. But if you would like to provide that info, bonus points!   • Why is JavaScript not used for classical application development (compiled software)?

    During my years of web development with JavaScript, I come to the conclusion that it's an incredible powerful language, and you can do amazing things with it. It offers a rich set of features, like: Dynamic typing First-class functions Nested functions Closures Functions as methods Functions as Object constructors Prototype-based Objects-based (almost everything is an object) Regex Array and Object literals It seems to me that almost everything can be achieved with this kind of language, you can also emulate OO programming, since it provides great freedom and many different coding styles. With more software-oriented custom functionalities (I/O, FileSystem, Input devices, etc.) I think it will be great to develop applications with. Though, as far as I know, it's only used in web development or in existing softwares as a scripting language only. Only recently, maybe thanks to the V8 Engine, it's been used more for other kind of tasks (see node.js for example). Why until now it's only be relegated only to web development? What is keeping it away from software development?

  • SQLite for personal use

    What are the applications for your personal use that needs a small database like SQLite? I am thinking of trying a few popular databases and SQLite is surely the first one I am planning to try since I know barely nothing about database except some simple programming years ago. I learned that SQLite is good for personal use. But embarrassingly I do not see any application except maybe managing my list of phone numbers/contact info, which has probably a few hundred items. What's your experience? FYI, I use EndNote for my reference and softcopy of books, and I feel iTunes' music/media management is ok since I am not a frequent user anyway. And others? I do lots of coding, but I just use some simple etags tools for that. And I pretty much use .txt file (sometimes in the asciidoc style) for my notes. I have quite a bunch of notes, but not that many either. So, really, what are your personal applications that need a small database instead of existing tools and plain text files?

I used SQL profiler to monitor sp_replcmds and found sp_replcmds execution time was 11 sec to 15 sec Is it there any way to optimize to make Log Reader read faster from transaction log??? Other information: SQL Server 2008 (SP2) Standard 64 bit

    Our Windows 7 computers/laptops are very slow at logoff, around 7 minutes (no problem at log on). We don't have this issue on XP clients. Problem occurs after adding the Win7 clients on domain. I tried to reset user profile. After resetting logoff takes around 2 minuted and after everyday it takes longer and longer We are using roaming profiles. Event Viewer: Event ID: 6005 The winlogon notification subscriber is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logoff). And then a minute later Event ID: 6006 - The winlogon notification subscriber took 300 second(s) to handle the notification event (Logoff).

    I'm running Apache 2.2, PHP 5.2, and Postgres 8.2 on Windows, and I'm seeing something funky in Apache's error.log file. Occasionally, I'll see the message "row number -1 is out of range 0..-1" pop up over and over. Unlike all the other lines in that log file, there's no timestamp or log level. Just that exact string. Googling around, it appears that message is, character for character, a common Postgres error message, but is not an Apache error. I've seen it happen multiple times, and on several different servers. I can't seem to reproduce it, though. I've tried throwing all sorts of error ridden database queries and result set inquiries at Postgres via PHP, and none of them seem to trigger that line being written to the log file. Is it possible for Postgres errors to be ending up in my Apache log file, and if so, how? What would trigger an error message like that? Thanks!

    Hello. I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed with sshd and i can successfully connect to it using login and password. I have configured an RSA key login and now have "Server refused our key" as expected. Ok, now i want to check sshd log in order to fingure out a problem. I have examined /etc/ssh/sshd_config and it have SyslogFacility AUTH LogLevel INFO Ok. I'm looking at /var/log/auth.log and... it's empty O_O. Changing Loglevel to VERBOSE helps nothing - auth.log is still empty. Any hints how i can check sshd log?

  • Enabling the log app on the WDTV

    Just flashed the last WDXLTV firmware on my WDTV and it's working fine. I tried to config a Wifi USB adapter but couldn't get it to work. Dropped the log-saver.app.bin on the root of the stick but didn't find any log files after booting. What I'm doing is turning on the WDTV with the stick inserted (the stick is formatted with FAT32). Tried with the wireless-mod.app.bin required files and without any other file than the log saver. I can't get a log file anyway. All I want right now is to get the log file so I can debug the WI FI adapter.

  • Application Event Log keeps getting corrupted

    I recently asked about repairing a corrupt event log, because it seemed to be a one-off event. The event log has since exhibited the same behavior 3 times. We have been trying to find patterns, but so far we have found nothing. The server runs several ASP.NET applications and three scheduled tasks written in .NET. The last modified date of the event log once happened to be the same time as one of the scheduled tasks, but the others have not been. Any suggestions of where to look next or a way we can get any information out of a corrupt evtx file? The server is running critical e-commerce applications, so we want to keep the number of restarts required to a minimum.   • Empty /var/log after running cron bash script

    I wrote a little bash script and all of a sudden my /var/log folder is completely empty except for the log I created for the bash script. This is the script I'm running every hour with cron: #!/bin/bash STL_DIR=/path/to/some/folder/i/hid LOGFILE=/var/log/stl_upload.log now=`date` echo "----------Start of Transmission----------" 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE echo "Starting transfer at $now" 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE rsync -av -e ssh $STL_DIR [email protected]:/users/path/folder 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE echo "----------End of transmission----------" 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE printf "\n" 2>&1 | tee -a $LOGFILE I want to be clear that I'm not 100% certain this is related to the empty logs folder. So if anyone could give me a pointer as to what could be going on about the reason why my log folder is empty, that'd be great.
