• How to add global exception handling to a add-in dll?

  Here's my context: I am writing a WPF add-in for an application. This Application's main thread is unmanaged. I want to add a global exception handling system for this add-in to handle any unhandled exceptions. Here's what I've tried but not working: I cannot add a try-catch block to my Application.Run() code line. Because I am an add-in, that code fragment is in the application. System.Windows.Forms.Application.ThreadException is not working too. There might not be an WinForm Application exists. (WPF hosting in unmanaged code.) AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException is not working too. Because maybe it's handled by the Application itself. It just doesn't enter my code. So, any ideas for this situation?

  I would like to print the cause of the HTTP Error 500 on my Velocity template but am having difficulty figuring out how this can be done.   I'm trying to define my own (very simple) exception class in Python 2.6, but no matter how I do it I get some warning. First, the simplest way: class MyException(Exception): pass This works, but prints out a warning at runtime: DeprecationWarning: BaseException.message has been deprecated as of Python 2.6 OK, so that's not the way. I then tried: class MyException(Exception): def __init__(self, message): self.message = message This also works, but PyLint reports a warning: W0231: MyException.__init__: __init__ method from base class 'Exception' is not called. So I tried calling it: class MyException(Exception): def __init__(self, message): super(Exception, self).__init__(message) self.message = message This works, too! But now PyLint reports an error: E1003: MyException.__init__: Bad first argument 'Exception' given to super class How the hell do I do such a simple thing without any warnings?

• Should I make sure arguments aren't null before using them in a function.

  The title may not really explain what I'm really trying to get at, couldn't really think of a way to describe what I mean. I was wondering if it is good practice to check the arguments that a function accepts for nulls or empty before using them. I have this function which just wraps some hash creation like so. Public Shared Function GenerateHash(ByVal FilePath As IO.FileInfo) As String If (FilePath Is Nothing) Then Throw New ArgumentNullException("FilePath") End If Dim _sha As New Security.Cryptography.MD5CryptoServiceProvider Dim _Hash = Convert.ToBase64String(_sha.ComputeHash(New IO.FileStream(FilePath.FullName, IO.FileMode.Open, IO.FileAccess.Read))) Return _Hash End Function As you can see I just takes a IO.Fileinfo as an argument, at the start of the function I am checking to make sure that it is not nothing. I'm wondering is this good practice or should I just let it get to the actual hasher and then throw the exception because it is null.? Thanks.

  I am writing some data access code and I want to check for potentially "invalid" data states in the database. For instance, I am returning a widget out of the database and I only expect one. If I get two, I want to throw an exception. Even though referential integrity should prevent this from occurring, I do not want to depend on the DBAs never changing the schema. I would like to use the System.IO.InvalidDataException, except that I am not dealing with a file stream so it would be misleading. I ended up going with a generic applicationexception. Anyone have a better idea?

• How do I propagate an exception thrown by croak in forked child to parent/foreground process?

  Throwing an exception via croak in a forked child process seems to print the error as a background process would. That is, it clobbers the shell prompt. If I die instead of croak, the the error message pops up as a foreground process. I've trying to find out why that is in the Carp documentation without any luck. Here's what I mean. The croak version: $ perl Wrapper.pm $ error: ... does not exist at Wrapper.pm line 624 The die version: $ perl Wrapper.pm error: ... does not exist at Wrapper.pm line 515. I tried trapping the fork and printing $@ to STDERR and exiting, but that didn't have an effect. Any ideas? I'd like to be able to use croak in this particular case.

  I have used Java, C++, .Net. (in that order). When asked about by-value vs. by-ref on interviews, I have always done well on that question ... perhaps because nobody went in-depth on it. Now I know that I do not see the whole picture. I was looking at this section of code written by someone else: XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument(); AppendX(doc); // Real name of the function is different AppendY(doc); // ditto When I saw this code, I thought: wait a minute, should not I use a ref in front of doc variable (and modify AppendX/Y accordingly? it works as written, but made me question whether I actually understand the ref keyword in C#. As I thought about this more, I recalled early Java days (college intro language). A friend of mine looked at some code I have written and he had a mental block - he kept asking me which things are passed in by reference and when by value. My ignorant response was something like: Dude, there is only one kind of arg passing in Java and I forgot which one it is :). Chill, do not over-think and just code. Java still does not have a ref does it? Yet, Java hackers seem to be productive. Anyhow, coding in C++ exposed me to this whole by reference business, and now I am confused. Should ref be used in the example above? I am guessing that when ref is applied to value types: primitives, enums, structures (is there anything else in this list?) it makes a big difference. And ... when applied to objects it does not because it is all by reference. If things were so simple, then why would not the compiler restrict the usage of ref keyword to a subset of types. When it comes to objects, does ref serve as a comment sort of? Well, I do remember that there can be problems with null and ref is also useful for initializing multiple elements within a method (since you cannot return multiple things with the same easy as you would do in Python). • SQLite - executeUpdate exception not caught when database does not exist? (Java)

  So I was purposely trying to break my program, and I've succeeded. I deleted the sqlite database the program uses, while the program was running, after I already created the connection. Then I attempted to update the database as seen below. Statement stmt; try { stmt = Foo.con.createStatement(); stmt.executeUpdate("INSERT INTO "+table+" VALUES (\'" + itemToAdd + "\')"); } catch(SQLException e) { System.out.println("Error: " + e.toString()); } The problem is, it didn't catch the exception, and continued to run as if the database was updated successfully. Meanwhile the database didn't even exist at that point since this was after I deleted it. Doesn't it check if the database still exists when updating? Do I have to check the database connection manually, every time I update to ensure that the database wasn't corrupted/deleted? Is this the way it is normally done, or is there a simpler/more robust approach? Thank you.

• Can I get a faster output pipe than /dev/null ?

  Hi I am running a huge task [automated translation scripted with perl + database etc.] to run for about 2 weeks non-stop. While thinking how to speed it up I saw that the translator outputs everything (all translated sentences, all info on the way) to STDOUT all the time. This makes it work visibly slower when I get the output on the console. I obviously piped the output to /dev/null, but then I thought "could there be something even faster?" It's so much output that it'd really make a difference. And that's the question I'm asking You, because as far as I know there is nothing faster... (But I'm far from being a guru having used linux on a daily basis only last 3 years)

  I was experimenting with enum, and I found that the following compiles and runs fine on Eclipse (Build id: 20090920-1017, not sure exact compiler version): public class SwitchingOnAnull { enum X { ,; } public static void main(String[] args) { X x = null; switch(x) { default: System.out.println("Hello world!"); } } } When compiled and run with Eclipse, this prints "Hello world!" and exits normally. With the javac compiler, this throws a NullPointerException as expected. So is there a bug in Eclipse Java compiler?

• Netbeans / persistence API error

  I am following this tutorial, I'm using netbeans 6.5.1 http://www.netbeans.org/kb/docs/java/gui-db-custom.html When I get to the part where I create the "new entity class from database", which is in the "Customizing the Master/Detail View" section of the tutoiral. I can't ever compile because I get this error in the task list (and I get a runtime error when I run)... Atleast I think these two are related. Error Named queries can be defined only on an Entity or MappedSuperclass class. • Why is my code stopping and not returning an exception?

  I have some code that starts a couple of threads to let them execute, then uses a while loop to check for the current time passing a set timeout period, or for the correct number of results to have been processed (by checking an int on the class object) (with a Thread.Sleep() to wait between loops) Once the while loop is set to exit, it calls Abort() on the threads and should return data to the function that calls the method. When debugging and stepping through the code, I find there can be exceptions in the code running on the separate threads, and in some cases I handle these appropriately, and at other times I don't want to do anything specific. What I have been seeing is that my code goes into the while loop and the thread sleeps, then nothing is returned from my function, either data or an exception. Code execution just stops completely. Any ideas what could be happening?
