• How reliable is DateTime.Utc in Silverlight applications?

  I have a silverlight application which users will be running in various time zones. The applications load their data from the server at one time, then cache it in IsolatedStorage. When I make changes to the data on the server, I want to be able to change the "last updated time" so that all applications download the newest data the next time they check this date. However, I'm a bit confused as to how to handle the time zone issue since a if the server is in New York and the update time is set to 2010-01-01 17:00:00 and a client in Seattle checks compares it to its local time of 2010-01-01 14:00:00 it won't update and will continue to provide old data for three more hours. My solution is to always post the update time in UTC time, not with the time on the server, then make the Silverlight app check with DateTime.UtcNow. Is this as easy as it sounds or are their issues with this, e.g. that timezones are not set correctly on computers and hence the SilverlightApp does not report the correct UTC time. Can anyone say from experience how likely it is that using DateTime.UtcNow like this for cache refreshing will work in all cases? If DateTime.UtcNow is not reliable, I will just use an incremented "DataVersion" integer but there are other scenarios in which getting time zone sychronization down would make it useful thoroughly understand how to solve this in silverlight apps.

• silverlight security with WCF service, Forms Authentication and Custom Form Ticket

  I have a silverlight application with login on the silverlight page. It uses Forms Authentication with WCF authentication service and customer Membership Provider. Something like : http://blogs.msdn.com/phaniraj/archive/2009/09/10/using-the-ado-net-data-services-silverlight-client-library-in-x-domain-and-out-of-browser-scenarios-ii-forms-authentication.aspx So, SL page login page calls the WCF service authentication service, it validates using DB - brings back username and password. Now, in each subsequent calls (in Global.asax in Authenticate_Request, I get HttpContext.User.IsAuthenticated and HttpContext.User.UserName). I have all this working properly. But, I just don't want the username, but more information surrounding the user, like UserId, UserAddress, UserAssociateCustomer etc. I tried couple of different approaches. 1) Use HttpContext.Cache as a dictionary to save the item and get it off based on httpcontext.user.name, problem is cache can be erased if there memory is being used heavily. 2) Tried CustomFormsAuth Ticket, when forms authentication writes a ticket, I intercept CreatingCookie method and write additional info in formauthentication ticket, so that I can read it in subsequent requests, I am having problems with this approach, I don't find the ticket in subsequent requests. I read about how we should use REsponse.Redirect, but where do I redirect user from WCF call. How do you guys implement the above scenario? Any best practices.? Any issues you see with going on HTTPS? All examples (or most of them) just explains simple forms authentication with "I am logged in message".. Any suggestions ?

• In browser trusted application Silverlight 5

  With the new Silverlight 5, we can now have a In-Browser elevated-trust application. However, I'm experiencing some problems to deploy the application. When I am testing the application from Visual Studio, everything works fine because it automatically gives every right if the website is hosted on the local machine (localhost, 127.0.0.1). I saw on MSDN that I have to follow 3 steps to make it work on any website: Signed the XAP - I did it following the Microsoft tutorial Install the Trusted publishers certificate store - I did it too following the Microsoft Tutorial Adding a Registry key with the value : AllowElevatedTrustAppsInBrowser. The third step is the one I am the most unsure about. Do we need to add this registry key on the local machine or on the server ? Is there any automatic function in silverlight to add this key or its better to make a batchfile? Even with those 3 steps, the application is still not working when called from another url than localhost. Does anybody has successfully implemented a In-browser elevated-trust application? Do you see what I'm doing wrong? Thank you very much!   Hi, I'm trying to get the html content of a page using silverlight. Webresponse and request classes don't work in silverlight. I did some googling and I found something. • How to synchronize Silverlight clients with WCF?

  Hi, this is probably only some conceptual problem, but I cannot seem to find the ideal solution. I'd like to create a Silverlight client application that uses WCF to control a third party application via some self written webservice. If there is more than one Silverlight client, all clients should be synchronized, i.e. parameter changes from one client should be propagated to all clients. I set up a very simple Silverlight GUI that manipulates parameters which are passed to the server (class inherits INotifyPropertyChanged): public double Height { get { return frameworkElement.Height; } set { if (frameworkElement.Height != value) { frameworkElement.Height = value; OnPropertyChanged("Height", value); } } } OnPropertyChanged is responsible for transferring data. The WCF service (duplex net.tcp) maintains a list of all clients and as soon as it receives a data packet (XElement with parameter change description) it forwards this very packet to all clients but the one the packet was received from. The client receives the package, but now I'm not sure, what's the best way to set the property internally. If I use "Height" (see above) a new change message would be generated and sent to all other clients a.s.o. Maybe I could use the data field (frameworkElement.Height) itself or a function - but I'm not sure whether there would arise problems with data binding later on. Also I don't want to simply copy parts of the code properties, to prevent bugs with redundant code. So what would you recommend? Thanks!

• Silverlight Not Rendering On Navigation

  I'm trying to create a site that requires login. Its entirely designed in silverlight. So my first page, home.xaml loads in mysite.aspx and it basically has a login page. AFter login, the user is redirected to another page user.aspx. in that page, i've embedded another silverlight control called nav.xaml. so now when user.aspx loads it is supposed to load a silverlight control. i've programmed app.xaml.vb such that it loads nav.xaml in the rootlayout when the page requesting is user.aspx. but for some reason its not working. my app.xaml.vb code: Private Sub Application_Startup(ByVal o As Object, ByVal e As StartupEventArgs) Handles Me.Startup If e.InitParams.ContainsKey("ReqPage") Then If e.InitParams("ReqPage") = "userpage" Then Me.RootVisual = New Nav() End If Else Me.RootVisual = New Home() End If End Sub in IE, half of the nav.xaml is rendered. but in firefox nothing is rendered. so wats going on exactly? pls help!

• WCF Data Service BeginSaveChanges not saving changes in Silverlight app

  I'm having a hell of a time getting WCF Data Services to work within Silverlight. I'm using the VS2010 RC. I've struggled with the cross domain issue requiring the use of clientaccesspolicy.xml & crossdomain.xml files in the web server root folder, but I just couldn't get this to work. I've resorted to putting both the Silverlight Web App & the WCF Data Service in the same project to get past this issue, but any advice here would be good. But now that I can actually see my data coming from the database and being displayed in a data grid within Silverlight I thought my troubles were over - but no. I can edit the data and the in-memory entity is changing, but when I call BeginSaveChanges (with the appropriate async EndSaveChangescall) I get no errors, but no data updates in the database.   Lets say I want to make a control to select any integer number by dragging on a "bar" with numbers: (156 is selected) Mousedown on "159" and dragging towards the left and then doing mouseup changes the control to this: (160 is selected) I've been experimenting for the past 3 hours but I'm inexperienced in Silverlight so I'm having problems getting started. My current guess is I should seperate this into 2 steps: Step 1: Build this control without swiping behavior. Just 2 buttons to go up a number or go down a number Step 2: Replace the buttons by handling mouse events. With my limited knowledge I think I would manage building a crappy control that does this, with very messy xaml and c# and lots of headaches when trying to apply styling and fancy state transitions, but I was hoping some xaml wizards could get me started with the basic approach?   We are currently trying to move large amounts of data to a Silverlight 3 client using WCF with PollingDuplex. I have read about the MultiplerMessagesPerPoll in Silverlight 4 and it appears to be quite a bit faster. Are there any examples out there for me to reference (using MultipleMessagesPerPoll)? Or maybe some good references on using Net.TCP? Maybe I should be taking a completely different approach? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  I'm kind of disappointed at Ria Services. I like to work in a domain driven design way, so for example if I'm working with an invoicing system I have an object invoice which will have all methods on it to for example calculate total price from its invoice rows. public decimal Amount { get {return Entries.Sum(x => x.Amount);} } I like to have methods to add a new row to validate in data. public void AddInvoiceRow(Article article, decimal quantity) This is functionality I need on both client and server side. Have I missed something big or is RIA Services not for me? (In the whole, I don't like Silverlight restrictions at all, I mean that we need get; set on every data field we want to transfer for example some fields are not public at all in domain driven design but the technique Silverlight offers forcing us to do bad coding.)

I guess i have to bind the click event of the button and the selecteditemchanged of the listbox to 2 methods in my viewmodel somehow? For the selecteditemchanged of the listbox i think there must also be a 'return call' possible when the viewmodel tries to set the selecteditem to another value? i come from a asp.net (mvc) background, but can't figure out how to do it in silverlight.

  Hi. I have 2 datagrids with data that binds at loadtime in xaml. Then I have a button that inserts a row in the database, but rows aren't added to the datagrids when I press the button. I would like a fix that doesn't just add a gridrow, but actually refreshes the data and fetches the new row from the db. I'm using riaservices, so if that opens up to any tools that can help me, please let me know? thx in advance :D

• How to store images without taking up huge amounts of RAM

  I'm working on a silverlight project where users get to create their own Collages. The problem When loading a bunch of images by using the BitmapImage class, Silverlight hogs up huge unreasonable amounts of RAM. 150 pictures where single ones fill up at most 4,5mb takes up about 1,6GB of RAM--thus ending up throwing memory exceptions. I'm loading them through streams, since the user selects their own photos. What I'm looking for A class, method or some process to eliminate the huge amount of RAM being sucked up. I've tried using a WriteableBitmap to render the images into, but I find this method forces me to reinvent the wheel when it comes to drag/drop and other things I want users to be able to do with the images.

But when I used same Converter to the DataGridTextColumn it throw execption why, can anyone know why is th is behaviour thanks in advance.

• How to get jQuery EasyUI datagrid and treegrid to load in background?

  I am trying build a jQuery EasyUI datagrid or treegrid out of a large query. Apparently the database takes long enough to respond that I get the "a script on this page may be busy" popup. Moreover, the entire browser (Firefox) locks up while it's waiting. I thought the whole point of AJAX was to load stuff unobtrusively. I've looked through the tutorials and documentation for EasyUI but it's not clear to me how to force a datagrid to load in the background. There are some similar unanswered questions asked on the EasyUI forums. Do I need to override the loader property of datagrid? If so, does anybody know where I can get a non-obfuscated version of the default loader function so I can be sure I understand what it's supposed to do before I write my own? Also, if I need asynchronous datagrids and datatrees with sorting and filtering features, is jQuery EasyUI the wrong library for doing this simply and cleanly? Is there some alternative jQuery library people would recommend? Thank you.

I can get this done visually, but when I submit the data, the list that is bound with the Datagrid does not carry the new combobox values. <dg:DataGridComboBoxColumn SelectedItemBinding="{Binding BIBStatus}" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource typeStatus}}" Width="0.20*"> <dg:DataGridComboBoxColumn.HeaderTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel> <TextBlock Text="Built-In Bridge"/> <ComboBox SelectedItem="{Binding BIBStatus}" SelectionChanged="ComboBox_SelectionChanged" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource typeStatus}}"/> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </dg:DataGridComboBoxColumn.HeaderTemplate> </dg:DataGridComboBoxColumn> In the ComboBox_SelectionChanged I have the following code: DataGridColumn comboCol = this.gridResults.Columns[0]; for (int i = 0; i < this.gridResults.Items.Count; i++) { ComboBox myCmBox = (comboCol.GetCellContent(this.gridResults.Items[i]) as ComboBox); myCmBox.SelectedValue = ((ComboBox)sender).SelectedValue; } When I submit the data, I submit the list that is DataContext to the Datagrid; if I change the value of the first column addressing a row at a time, i.e. clicking the cell with the combobox in each row, the values are propagated to the list in DataContext, however if I change the value of the first column by the header it does not. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? I'm guessing it's the way I affect each row, but I've tried SelectedValue, SelectedItem and SelectedIndex... all to no avail. Thanks in advance...

• WPF DataGrid inside Accordion height issue

  I am using the latest WPF Toolkit but am running into a height issue when I have a large record set bound into a datagrid inside an AccordionItem item. The height of the Accordion itself scales nicely but the datagrid inside the accordion control doesn't get get a scrollbar or get constrained in any way so the records are hidden.
