• Wessty: Live with HTML 5 (2011 Speaker Tour)

  That’s right: Wessty is on tour. Okay, the banner and the tour is a little over the top, but I am really excited about my upcoming speaking engagements to spread the word about HTML 5! I have already kicked off the tour with the Winnipeg Code Camp last weekend with the world premiere of HTML 5 for .NET Pro presentation, and the turn out fantastic. It was the last presentation of the day, but we still had some great questions about the new standard and got to see how HTML 5 can fit into .NET web applications today. In any case, above you can see the confirmed presentations that I will be doing so far in 2011, but there are a few more events that I have heard about that I hope to add to that list. Ultimately, expect that list to be updated over the course of the year as the year is young and there are plenty of conferences coming up! This works very fine and messages are received normally. What I want to ask about is, am I able to use this service to send SMS messages to an international number? What about the country code? • Which one is better offline method for large scale application

  We've a big data management website used by several property. Some of our customers have downtime (they can't access net for an hour or two). We want our site to support offline data viewing and inventory management (typical data search and add/remove) and when the user goes online we can sync the changes back to our central database. Customers use several platforms like Windows, iOS, etc. We've been looking into several different options, here are the major choices - Develop offline web app supported in HTML5. Develop a 'fallback' mechanism and interact with data from the app cache as explained in here (http://www.htmlgoodies.com/html5/tutorials/introduction-to-offline-web- applications-using-) Develop a desktop based cross platform solution. I remember the old MONO which has been popular. Here's a post (What do you suggest for cross platform apps, including web cross-platform-apps-including-web) and another one (Technology choice for cross platform development (desktop and phone)? platform-development-desktop-and-phone?rq=1) I realize the the desktop solution might be hard to maintain and result in some compatibility issues and demand test environments. • Internal Website links only working for some users

  We are having a very hard time trying to figure out this problem or the root cause. Our website www. countrymusicislove .com is only correctly displaying the homepage for some users. Anytime they click on a post, about me, etc, a 404 error page is displayed. Everything worked fine before we moved over to a new hosting company 2 weeks ago. I am looking for any ideas and even willing to pay someone to troubleshoot and fix this issue as no one seems to have an answer. The entire website is done in the latest version of wordpress. The old website address for the website is http://siteground243.com/~countr10/ And the domain name was registered through google for enom.com Everything is now going through Arvixe.com On my work computer, I am able to get the 404 error to appear on other pages by turning on friendly error messages. When I turn off friendly error messages, everything seems to work. I have tried this several times and it doesn't seem like a coincidence.

• MySQL on a laptop for remote workers - MyISAM keeps corrupting

  We have an application that is used by remote, mobile workers. It intalls WAMP (Server2Go) on a laptop and uses MySQL to store data locally. All tables are MyISAM. Once a day, the workers sync the database to our central server via HTTP scripts that query the data and post it to our site. The problem is that many of these laptop database tables are corrupting continually. It appears that MySQL acts like it saves the information (I don't get any query errors), but the table gets corrupt. I have to repair the table constantly (which removes several rows of data in the process). Does anyone have any ideas about how to work around this problem? Would it be wise to switch to InnoDB on the laptops? How about a different database system altogether. I have looked at MySQL Embedded, but it appears to be the same engine as the regular MySQL.

• Diablo 3 "freezes" periodically

  I'm running Diablo 3 (start edition, digital download) on the following: Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (stock Unity, Gnome, etc; kernel version 3.2.0-29-generic) Wine version 1.5.11 (base, from Wine's PPA, game started with setarch i386 -3) Intel i7 920 CPU nVidia GTX260 with driver version 295.49 ("post-release updates" entry within the proprietary drivers tool), dual monitors 6GB RAM Every so often (and what appears to be at random), the game video will freeze up. I can still move the mouse, and it reacts to ctrl+alt+f2 to drop into text mode, but I can't get back to the desktop (which means I can check terminal to see what's going on after launching from terminal, especially since even in windowed mode, the secondary screen gets shut off by the game), and I can't continue to play the game. In order to get it running again, I have to restart lightdm, then relaunch the game (or, in a couple of rare cases, I had to restart the computer entirely, because running sudo service lightdmn [stop/start] doesn't appear to react). Turning down the video settings seems to have helped in some cases, but not all of them. Times it's frozen on me: The beginning of The Fallen Start quest part 6 - kill the Wretched Mother, right as you walk out of New Tristram and engage in the monsters on the northern path (repeatedly froze here until I adjusted the graphics down) Within the cinematic/event upon finding Deckard Cain While fighting the skeletons to protect Deckard Cain When about to enter Leoric's passage after Cain sends you back to where you found him That's as far as I've gotten through the game so far. Additionally, this doesn't happen on other games I play and seems to only occur with Diablo 3. Has anyone else run into this issue and know a possible cause or fix, or at least know where I can look (and what to look for) to figure out why this is happening?

• Designing Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). I've been able to create [console] applications in C# that work pretty well, and they're usually structured something like this: static void Main() { // Load parameters from app.config. // Get documents from queue. var files = someInterface.GetFiles(someFilterOrRegexPattern); foreach (var file in files) { // Extract metadata from the file. // Validate some attributes of the file; add any validation errors to an in-memory // structure (e.g. List<ValidationErrors>). if (isValid) { // Upload using some wrapper for an ORM an someInterface.Upload(meta.Param1, meta.Param2, ...); } else { // Bounce the file } } // Report any validation errors (via message bus or SMTP or some such). } And that's pretty much it. Most of the time I wrap all these operations in a "Worker" class that takes the needed interfaces as constructor parameters. This approach has worked reasonably well, but I just get this feeling in my gut that there's something awful about it and would love some feedback. Is writing an ETL process as a C# Console app a bad idea? I'm also wondering if there are some design patterns that would be useful in this scenario that I'm clearly overlooking. Thanks in advance!

• Compiling to a binary from source

  I'm using WKHTMLTOPDF on a 64-bit Linux server and I'm running into problems with the version. Seen here: http://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/downloads/list There's slim pickins when it comes to pre-compiled binaries. I started with version 0.9.9 which has a few bugs. I upgraded to 0.11.0 RC 1 to find a slew of new problems, namely the following: http://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/issues/detail?id=730 I think 0.10 RC 2 would work, and the thread above suggests compiling from the source has a fix for the error I'm getting, but I don't know how to do that. Can anyone explain how I can create a static binary myself, or would anyone be willing to create and post one for the countless people waiting for this fix?

• Swapping 3Ware Raid Card - Best Procedure

  We have a server running an old firmware version and driver (just took this position) on the 3Ware 9650SE Raid Controller... We have been having issues with the server and seemed to have narrowed it down to the Raid Card... I will be replacing the Raid card with the same model of 3Ware 9650SE, however, the card ordered most likely will have newer firmware on it. I managed to backup all the data to a very large drive. My plan is to update the firmware/driver on the current setup (which is still booting) and verify that everything works.. Then throw in the new Raid Card, check the firmware version (not letting it post). And update to newest firmware if needed via Java management utility on the card? Is this the best route? Thanks!

• What can be done to decrease the number of live issues with applications?

  First off I have seen this post which is slightly similar to my question. : What can you do to decrease the number of deployment bugs of a live website? Let me layout the situation for you. The team of programmers that I belong to have metrics associated with our code. Over the last several months our errors in our live system have increased by a large amount. We require that our updates to applications be tested by at least one other programmer prior to going live. I personally am completely against this as I think that applications should be tested by end users as end users are much better testers than programmers, I am not against programmers testing, obviously programmers need to test code, but they are most of the times too close to the code. The reason I specify that I think end users should test in our scenario is due to the fact that we don't have business analysts, we just have programmers. I come from a background where BAs took care of all the testing once programmers checked off it was ready to go live. We do have a staging environment in place that is a clone of the live environment that we use to ensure that we don't have issues between development and live environments this does catch some bugs. We don't do end user testing really at all, I should say we don't really have anyone testing our code except programmers, which I think gets us into this mess (Ideally, we would have BAs or QA or professional testers test). We don't have a QA team or anything of that nature. We don't have test cases for our projects that are fully laid out. Ok, I am just a peon programmer at the bottom of the rung, but I am probably more tired of these issues than the managers complaining about them. So, I don't have the ability to tell them you are doing it all wrong.....I have tried gentle pushes in the correct direction. Any advice or suggestions on how to alleviate this issue ?

  2010/09/19 14:52:07 [error] 1419#0: *10220 recv() failed (104: Connection reset by peer) while reading response header from upstream, client: [...], server: [...], request: "POST /[...] HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/server/php-fpm.sock:", host: "[...]", referrer: "[...]" This is the error I'm receiving randomly. 95% of the time my setup works perfectly, but once in a while I'm getting 502 for 3-4 subsequent requests. I'm using Unix socket between the server and the PHP process as you can see, also have set up FastCGI params (SCRIPT_FILENAME), etc. correctly. What can I do about it to strengthen the connection between these services? Thank you very much in advance.

• Restful WebAPI VS Regular Controllers

  I'm doing some R&D on what seems like a very confusing topic, I've also read quite a few of the other SO questions, but I feel my question might be unique enough to warrant me asking. We've never developed an app using pure WebAPI. We're trying to write a SPA style app, where the back end is fully decoupled from the front end code Assuming our service does not know anything about who is accessing/consuming it: WebAPI seems like the logical route to serve data, as opposed to using the standard MVC controllers, and serving our data via an action result and converting it to JSON. This to me at least seems like an MC design... which seems odd, and not what MVC was meant for. (look mom... no view) What would be considered normal convention in terms of performing action(y) calls? My sense is that my understanding of WebAPI is incorrect. The way I perceive WebAPI, is that its meant to be used in a CRUD sense, but what if I want to do something like: "InitialiseMonthEndPayment".... Would I need to create a WebAPI controller, called InitialiseMonthEndPaymentController, and then perform a POST... Seems a bit weird, as opposed to a MVC controller where i can just add a new action on the MonthEnd controller called InitialisePayment. Or does this require a mindset shift in terms of design? Any further links on this topic will be really useful, as my fear is we implement something that might be weird an could turn into a coding/maintenance concern later on?

After finishing my undergrad life,I sat for an written test for post of python programmer and luckily I got the job and is working there(Its a small software firm do most of the task in python).Day by day I have gained some experience with core python. Meanwhile an USA based web service firm called me for the interview and after finishing three steps(oral+mini coding project+final oral)they selected me(i was wondered!).And I am going to join their with in few days.There I have to work in python(based on Django framework,I know only basic of this framework). Update this is what was written in the document IIS6 should be used to restrict HTTP methods to those required by the MOSS07 application(s). I also searched some books and saw something curious in O'Reilly's Sharepoint 2007 by James Pyles and others. There is no real suppported way to use HTTP POST and HTTP GET because of the web.config settings and the static definition of the WSDL. In the web.config <protocols> <remove name="HttpGet"> <remove name="HttpPost"> <remove name="HttpPostLocalHost"> <add name="Documentation"> </protocols> If we do this in the Web.Config file, would it solve the problem?

• Unable to record sound from web browser (firefox / chromium ) using recordmydesktop

  I have to do some screencast tutorials and i am using recordmydesktop with gtk frontend to do it. I need to record also the sound and here is where i have found the problem. It took me some time, but now I can record the sound from almost every application in my desktop ... almost. I need to capture some sound from a web application using java, but when i load the page nothing appears in the playback tab of pavucontrol. I think this is the problem, because if there is no sound stream i think the recordmydesktop program thinks there is no sound to record ... the funny thing is that I can ear the sound in my speakers! I have tried with Firefox and Chromium with no success. Although I have been able to record youtube videos without problem, so it seems that java is the key here. Any suggestion or idea? P.S.: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 with this configuration. ( if more information is needed please let me know) sight i cannot post images ... so I have an audigy2 sound card using Analog Stereo Output profile. I have been working on some enhancements since then and hence v1.0.1.0 is now available for download from Codeplex. What’s new in this release This release includes the following enhancements: [execution_id] now gets returned in a call to EXEC [dbo].[sp_ssiscatalog] @operation_type='exec'; Filter events by specifying packages to ignore EXEC [dbo].[sp_ssiscatalog] @operation_type='exec',@exec_events_packagesexcluded='SomePackage.dtsx,AnotherPackage.dtsx'; [event_message_id] is now returned in a list of events List of executions can now be filtered via a minimum and maximum execution_id EXEC [dbo].[sp_ssiscatalog] @operation_type='execs',@execs_minimum_execution_id=198,@execs_maximum_execution_id=201 Events resultsets now have a field, [event_message_context_xml] that contains an XML document containing all [event_message_context] info (if any exists) Installation instructions Download the zip file at DB v1.0.1.0. • SSMS hanging without error when connecting to SQL

  Scary day for me last Thursday. I had gone up to Brisbane, and was due to speak at the Queensland SQL User Group on Thursday night. Unfortunately, disaster struck about an hour beforehand. Nothing to do with the recent floods (although we were meeting in a different location because of them). It was actually down to the fact that I’d been fiddling with my machine to get Virtual Server running on Windows 7, and SQL had finally picked up a setting from then. I could run Management Studio, but it couldn’t connect at all. No error, it just seemed to hang. One of the things you have to do to get Virtual Server installed is to tweak the Group Policy settings. I’d used gpupdate /force to get Windows to pick up the new setting, which allowed me to get Virtual Server running properly, but at the time, SQL was still using the previous settings. Finally when in Brisbane, my machine picked up the new settings, and caused me pain. Dan Benediktson describes the situation. If the SQL client picks up the wrong value out of the GetOverlappedResult API (which is required for various changes in Windows 7 behaviour), then Virtual Server can be installed, but SQL Server won’t allow connections. Yay. Luckily, it’s easy enough to change back using the Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc). Then restarting the machine (again!, as gpupdate /force didn’t cut it either, because SQL had already picked up the value), and finally I could reconnect. On Thursday I simply borrowed another machine for my talk. Today, one of my guys had seen and remembered Dan’s post. Thanks, both of you.
